A large number of our kids never leave the city to visit the mountains until 6th grade for the week of outdoor lab. We have to support in any way to help them learn about their world. #MasteryChat

A3: Part of my A2, but I've heard so much about Mystery Skype/Google Hangout, the new Flipgrid pals, but I'm trying to talk others into it as a coach. #masterychat
A3. No. But it will happen REAL soon! It needs to happen. Every classroom goes through the same struggles and successes. Lets do it together. #masterychat
A3 I am primarily an enrichment T so I only get to see Ss for 1 hour a week- makes it tough to set up a Skype call or other digital collaboration. The school I am in, however, has regular Skype calls w/ our sister school in the Canary Islands! #masterychat
A3. Anyone who shares that they have connected with a classroom in some other corner of the world absolutely ROCKS! They certainly "dwell in possibilities!" #masterychat
#masterychat Q3 Honestly, not yet. Virtual field trips and web quests are as far as I have gone. I can definitely see the value though. Plus if we have the technology to connect us globally, we may as well use it for good!
A1 global citizens see themselves as a part of the big picture. They are aware, respectful and sensitive to the cultural differences of others. They strive for a better world for everyone #MasteryChat
A3: I connect virtually on Twitter all the time with other amazing teachers, but my peer and I were just talking about wanting to connect our classrooms using skype in the future and potentially using @thegridmethod. I want to lead by example. #masterychat

A3: what a wonderful opportunity to partner up with schools around the world and have Ss learn from each other. I can only imagine the questions and discussions that could occur #masterychat#LoveLiteracyLearning
Google Earth is such an awesome tool for things like this. Really cool. Let them see how big this world really is. Do you then explore the areas you look at online? #masterychat
A2) We are a Newcomer class so we are all about honoring culture & multiple perspectives.
We use @noasbobs approach to projects. So students build them outside the blocks of time that we are together. There is high interest & high engagement. #masterychat#studentvoice
A3. @Flipgrid videos, some Ss have posted YouTube videos as projects, my astronomy Ss have to publish a blog that is seen worldwide (stops them from plagiarizing). #edtech#MasteryChat
I just did Flipgrid for the first time and it was the coolest thing ever! I love that we don't have to figure out time zones- opens up more possibilities!!! #masterychat
A3 yes, last summer used @edmodo to connect with other Ts in Spanish speaking countries, we had Ss discuss thru Edmodo, then @padlet and @Flipgrid going for Skype before end of year #masterychat
In reply to
@kidworldcitizen, @edmodo, @padlet, @Flipgrid
#MasteryChat A3 Our students have visited Russia, Canada, Israel, Sweden, Denmark, France, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina and Spain this year. Used geography skills and questions to find countries, then engage in cultural talk. Gave our Ss a first hand perspective.
A3 we haven’t used that but we have Skyped in authors at the end of our school wide book read and it was awesome. We brought in #willweaver#MasteryChat
A3 Not yet, but I hope to do that very soon. It would be awesome to connect with students and teachers from other schools around the world #masterychat
A3 - I personally have not, but my colleague has done this. We are thinking of creating a vision for heathy lifestyles that can be shared with other students and teachers. #masterychat
A1: We work from a core of empathy to build global citizens,. Good global citizens can see the world from the perspective of others, can consider why and how a person or culture might do something differently, and be able to respect those differences. #masterychat

A3: @MsSalvac class in TX and our class in NC connected tremendously using @GetKahoot games!!! Students created amazing connections even though we're miles away
#masterychat
A3 - I am headed in this direction, but I just have not found time in my curriculum yet. I want to add #Gridpals over the next year and maybe a mystery Skype, but mostly I want to work with my teacher friends over the world, so that I can talk to them more. #MasteryChat
Oh, my goodness, have I! I've connected with a brilliant group of #aplangchat and #aplitchat teachers who taught me how to get students blogging and connect them with other blogging students to provide an authentic audience #powerful#masterychat
A3: We have done @SkypeClassroom with classes in Canada and Mexico. It was AWESOME! The kids from Canada showed us snow and how they dress for recess (and many of our kids hadn't seen snow before!) #MasteryChathttps://t.co/phs5dCe4E2
Hello @kidworldcitizen#masterychat#globaledchat! @EmpaticoOrg platform contains lovely project prompts for connecting elementary classrooms worldwide. During my recent school visits, PD, Ts get really excited - it's easy, meaningful, and you can start right away!
Oh yea, I am a BIG fan of the #flipgrid / @Flipgrid hoping to connect my classes with other university classes in the future to help foster a global learning community for my students. #masterychat
In reply to
@kidworldcitizen, @CoachJonCraig, @Flipgrid
#MasteryChat A3 Believe strongly in taking our students beyond the classroom walls. I know many of our Ss will never get the opportunity to travel. This is their opportunity!
A3 I had my students Skype with a classroom from England (after hours) to compare the way in which the American Revolution is taught in each country. #Masterychat
A3) I haven’t yet done Skype or Flipgrid but I want to. I have had my classroom Twitter ask another class about culture during the olympics when our class was representing team Canada #masterychat
I used to take my Western Civ classes on a tour of the Palace of Versailles..On Google Maps you can drop the peg man right into the palace itself. Kids loved it! #masterychat
I totally understand. As lead learners we can help others understand why it isn't appropriate by heightening their awareness. Sometimes we have to be the voice that shakes but speaks up. #masterychat
I've found that @flipgrid allows my special ed students to share among themselves, and show their own voice! I was finally able to hear their thoughts on math and hear their thinking. It was amazing! #masterychat
A3: I have not but like
https://t.co/P3uMYPagMg
Love connecting with other cultures to see the differences but similarities young people share.
#masterychat
Skype with another class is really easy and fun! You can prepare a topic beforehand- we did "recess" and had the kids make up questions to ask their partner class in Canada (how long, what they play, what equipment they can check out) #MasteryChat
I need to investigate more into @Flipgrid to connect our students. I know it is pretty easy, just needing some more time. Another thing to add to my summer list! #MasteryChat
In reply to
@kidworldcitizen, @CoachJonCraig, @Flipgrid
A3: I like to use #edtech to connect with our teachers for sure. Twitter chats are my favorite :) These are some great ones for world language teachers: #Masterychat
A2, pt 2: We've also build an entire debate / discussion class into our curriculum to explore global citizenship. We used #oxfam's Global Citizenship curriculum at the core of these classes, for teachers to extend from. #masterychathttps://t.co/jk0hOXdyPH
Today I met a wonderful group of students who are experiencing what I experienced as a language learner.
We CAN inspire each other miles and miles away!! #masterychathttps://t.co/xqPPbSkMEL
@emilyfranESL thank you for taking the time to speak to our ELL community @FiskeSchool. “...culture, language...everything you are doing, embrace it all”

#A3 I am setting up a video walking tour right now between ESL students in Mexico and Spanish students in New Jersey. We are excited to practice language, but also show each other our schools/towns. #Masterychat
A1-3: Totally forgot about https://t.co/QZFUF4fbV8 ...Access to loads of cultural pieces and "virtually" walk around the greatest museums in the world. #masterychat
#MasteryChat A3 We have also welcomed many historical figures into our classes to engage our students in the study of history. Here are a few who have spoke with our students.
A3) After Hurricane Harvey we missed weeks of school. We returned to our classrooms more than a bit shaken. @DoDeBoer1 & @rolat's classes both sent us letters of hope via a padlet. One class was in another city. The other class was in a different country. Amazing. #Masterychat
A3. Reads to me like many would like to add this to their "to-do list" for next year. Might be a great chat topic for late August/September to help guide with the "to do" steps? #masterychat
#masterychat Q2 I always love inviting parents in as guests to celebrate and teach their culture. For example, for Diwali and Chinese New Year when I taught first grade, parents came in and did wonderful interactive lessons. So much better than watching a video!!
My summer list keeps on getting longer and longer. Plus I am teaching summer school, but the hope is I can try some of what I need to learn with my littles this summer too. #MasteryChat

A4 - The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind was one of the best books I ever brought to my school and has a great global perspective that students can clear understand and overlay onto their lives. #MasteryChat
A4 Books don't often find their way into my sci curriculum, but using articles, especially from @Newsela that feature other cultures is a goal #masterychat
A4 One of my activities for elementary school reading is to look at fairy tales from a variety of cultures. Mufaro's Beautiful Daughter is a great companion for Cinderella and I love Lon Po Po to pair with Little Red Riding Hood! #masterychat
A4. Please .... please take note of the comment below by @mexusmx Reach out to those from those countries before purchasing. I made a mistake once of purchasing books before asking - you can learn from my mistake :-) #masterychat
Very important point! Reach out to colleagues in your #pln from those countries to make sure the books are respectful depictions of the culture and people! #MasteryChat

A4 Books don't often find their way into my sci curriculum, but using articles, especially from @Newsela that feature other cultures is a goal #masterychat
A4: A former teacher gave me "Educating Esme", and I read "Of Borders and Dreams" for an independent study. Amazing book by the way. I am interested in reading the responses for this question. #masterychat
I have used it some, enough to get my feet wet and hook my littles. We already do love it. I just need to be more intentional and work to get our classroom teachers into it as well. #MasteryChat
A4 we totally loved A Long Walk to Water @LindaSuePark - it was perfect -PERFECT for my class and kids! Also, Lion about a boy ... is a great! I have a bunch of picture books - #masterychat
I love comparing lit across cultures!!! Google gingerbread man around the world, CInderella around the world, Multicultural Red Riding Hood, Trickster tales around the world #masterychat
It has been a lot of coaching and encouraging. Asking them what do they care about and being flexible enough to engage them with a topic that meets that need. It takes one-on-one work that can happen during 20% time. #masterychat
A4 Long Walk To Water is my current favorite. Ironically, we discussed it today. A lot of my students thought the passage I read was historical because "everyone" has water. They were shocked as I told them about this book that they now want to read. #MasteryChat
#masterychat
A4
Omg Patricia Pollaco books all of the way. Pink and Say is the best story ever for mankind differences and for themed literature based on humanity. She is an amazing author. She intentionally uses literature to teach cultural differences.

My son is actually working at @iterorg with scientists from around the world! I don’t know how much they do with schools but I can find out if anyone is interested. #MasteryChat
It really is a one of a kind experience when the kids can say they spoke to a practicing scientist about what they research. They learn so much. Very valuable.
Gosh dont even know where to begin. Its a Framework that I put my curriculum into to make Personalized, Self-Paced Learning manageable and consistent. The transformation in Student Ownership & TIME to actually connect to students is mindblowing. Need I say more? #masterychat

A5 Even though the Ss I work with are young (upper elementary), I find that they are craving an understanding of the world. They WANT to talk about what they hear their Ps talking about. I give them the time to speak up & discuss openly in a safe environment. #masterychat
A4 Watson’s go to Birmingham, Farewell to Manzanaar, Code Talkers, there are so many books that expose kids to other cultures as well as historical accounts of how they have been mistreated #masterychat
A2: We encourage students to read culturally diverse books by having them in our school library and classrooms library. We have an International Festival every year to introduce our students and community to different cultures. #masterychat
Exactly. This is one of the keys. Is the culture represented in a way that honors the indigenous traditions in a respectful, intelligent way. That’s probably a keeper! #masterychat
A5: When we discuss events in history, I point to their modern connections. North Korea actually announced the end of their nuclear missile program and plans for peace the day after I taught the Korean War. Pretty cool connection! #masterychat
A5: I've started showing a 90 second news of the day clip at the beginning of #aplang class and talking with students about what is noteworthy (for them) in the news. #masterychat
A5: Discussing current events is really important- from reputable sources and age-appropriate. I love @newsela- they have Spanish AND English stories! https://t.co/lTXY040Dsb#MasteryChat
A5. I teach teenagers. Global issues arise all the time because they have questions. It tough to stay neutral sometimes but I like to play devil’s advocate with them no matter what side they take. I usually read about the same issue from many (often slanted) sources. #MasteryChat
A5: I try to include news stories for listening practice too for my language students. Have you ever seen how @TED-ed has lesson plans and discussion questions with their videos? AWESOME for #ELL#langchathttps://t.co/QtJ4wzWQC5#masterychat
A5 - I try to give the facts and let students make their own decisions. Of course I dispel myths or misinformation when I hear it, but I want my students to feel like their voice is important when we discuss global issues. #MasteryChat
A5 I discuss global and local current events in our class to build background knowledge and to make connections. I try to incorporate my students' culture and interests throughout my lessons. #masterychat
#Masterychat
A4) You need to know your students before you can share a book like this. But it's nice to know that more books are being written to honor the struggle many of my students have faced. @emilyfranESL, mirrors, right?
A5: We talk about their current environmental events. Like volcanoes, earthquakes, natural disasters, and how humans impact the habitats of animals. #masterychat
A5: We watch CNN news and discuss the events. I am always trying to get better in regards to this area because it is crucial for our Ss to know what is going on around them. #masterychat
A5: Depending on the GL and/or maturity level, I try and find a literary connection so we can address the local/global event and also discuss how the author addressed the concept in the text #MasteryChat#LoveLiteracyLearning
A5 here is a great blog 50 ways to teach current events https://t.co/QyZGKPhj6N our school has the local paper delivered to ElA classrooms once a week, @Scholastic Scope magazine has great resources as well #MasteryChat
A5: For the past 9 years, I have worked with Ss on the @Future_City competition. It is an engineering competition that asks Ss to solve specific urban problems. Ss research areas of the word that are affected, then design a futuristic city around their solution. #Masterychat
#masterychat
A5
In third grade I discuss world events if Ss bring it to light. If Ss ask me about a sensitive subject I am okay with it if they bring it up. I teach facts only and do not let my opinions slip into conversation . I present facts and let them lead discussions
That is awesome timing! I taught about nuclear issues this year and I tell the students about this past summer when I was in Hiroshima for the Peace Ceremony and N. Korea shot missiles into the Sea of Japan. Such a surreal experience. #masterychat
A5 - We have used @SkypeBusiness to connect with classrooms where these events are local and discussed with those living it! Authentic global connections/learning. #Masterychat
A5 - We do weekly What You Want to Learn Wednesdays. The topics covered are all over the place, but I stress the importance of expanding the horizons outside of our community. This has been really helpful with topics like diseases, nutrition and drug use. #MasteryChat
A5 We discuss daily events in class. I have found out it helps to break the ice. After discussing world events for a little while, the class just flows on from then. #masterychat
A5: Honestly this has been hard lately...which makes it even more important to create space for students to talk to each other in a respectful way and process what’s happening across our interconnected globe. #masterychat
Thanks for the great convo #masterychat. Bowing out early to get ready to lead my first chat. Would love for you to join #waledchat in 15 minutes to talk growth mindset.
#masterychat Q5 I always love having subscriptions to TIME readers. They allow kids a different type of reading while they are exposed to more current news and/or culturally diverse topics. Easy to fit into the busy day also.
A5 as an admin I don’t have a class but my SS department starts their class with current events and this day in history. It’s a bell ringer activity. It’s amazing how many historical events are tied to current news #masterychat
#MasteryChat A5 We were fortunate to have both our Indiana US Senators, Todd Young and Joe Donnelly, speak with our students. Students ask questions of their Senators and they answered. Important to teach our students the importance of civic engagement.
A5 here is a great blog 50 ways to teach current events https://t.co/QyZGKPhj6N our school has the local paper delivered to ElA classrooms once a week, @Scholastic Scope magazine has great resources as well #MasteryChat
A5 Newswla is a great resource they actually write issues articles that allow kids to consider multiple perspectives on a topic! I use Paul’s reasoning model to help kids learn to reason and look at situations from all points of view! #champforkids#masterychat
A5: I LOVE using @Newsela with 3-5 students! We are always finding compelling articles about what's happening in the world right now!
AND
The articles are in levels!!!!
#masterychat
A5: As often as possible...connect to content, debate, media literacy, cross-curricular. I think reading a newspaper, on a regular basis, is an invaluable activity for both kids & adults. #MasteryChat
A5 I try to discuss stories and how they relate to them, I try to use our lack of knowledge as adults to help them understand why they need to learn certain things. (Hope that makes sense) I also use Newsela. #MasteryChat
We must tread lightly and get to know our students before we share books like these. But @EmilyFranESL will agree, it is important for students to have books that are mirrors. I'm glad my books like this are getting Published. Thx Mary & Jeffery. #MasteryChat
A5 I try to present both sides and stick to facts. It is hard to make sure that I don’t add my own bias. My experiences and my Ss are different and I need to show them how to be respectful of other views. #masterychat
A6: Our school has organized food drives. I remember making blankets in early act club @CenturyWildcats. It taught me to appreciate what I have. #masterychat
A5: When I taught H.S. reading I used NY Times and Wall St Journal articles. We also use @Newsela and @Achieve3000 for informational text and current events. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻#masterychat
A5- If you open up class time to discuss global and local issues (you should), you need to be prepared to admit to your students that you haven't heard of some things, people and places. 1/ #MasteryChat
I've always found my students bring in topics/events that could be considered really obscure. Obscurity doesn't matter to me provided that it has piqued student interest! So, even as a news junkie, I'm constantly learning what's in the news from my students. 2/2 #MasteryChat
A6: I love projects like @kidknits- they buy yarn from partners in Rwanda and Chile and “uses knitting to teach that you're never to young to affect a life on the other side of the world” #masterychat
A6: My 8th graders did a year long kindness campaign. I never had so many parents comment on how much happier and positive their kids were. #masterychat
#masterychat
A6
Yes, I have done several projects. We have collected pennies to save rainforests and studied the effects humans have on them and why they are so important for Earth. Most of the Rainforest is undiscovered and is a natural resource for many medical needs etc.
Just started, there are different activities to start with, Ss share their passions, and we follow a lesson booklet, so far just getting to know everyone :)#masterychat
Yup! We’re in the adaptations unit right now and are talking about how some animals have to use their adaptations to survive a catastrophic event like this and others are at a loss. #masterychat
A6: An area I need to grow! I read about this in Teach Like a Pirate by @burgessdave. He calls these lessons "Life Changing Lessons"!!! #Tlap#MasteryChat
A5) Usually convos of current events flow thru lessons. We bring up issues that connect to the past. Act as #anthropologists to become change makers. #masterychat
It is hard not to voice my opinion sometimes- I have to concentrate so hard to just present the facts on each side and let the students come to their own decisions! #MasteryChat
A6 This is our second year raising oysters. After measuring and studying to see how they work, they then get to transplant them into the waterway near our school. Gives them a new respect for keeping our beaches and water clean. #MasteryChat
A6: I have taught @EiE_org units on sound and light in a previous state. Loved that there were student books that represented a cultural aspect. I’d like to get back to these Engineering/STEM and ELA lessons. #masterychat
A6: I've had Ss create math games to share with/play/give to younger Ss in neighboring districts. They learned so much about empathy and patience towards others who do not share their level of understanding. #Masterychat
A6 I haven’t done a service project with my Ss, but my Church has adopted our school and provides homework bags for all 800 Ss, handmade hats, and food baskets at the holidays. I would like to get my Ss involved in one of the local community cleanups. #masterychat
A6 - Huge fan of Pay it Forward. We do a weekly Google doc on Paying it Forward. Had thousand of entries and many that went above the typical ideas we think of. #MasteryChat
A6: My students also raised money for @water – they make it really easy to keep track of the donations, and help to promote it. It’s a great connection to World Water Day https://t.co/yJJxiEFUBZ#masterychat
A6: We are a Title 1 school and our student government just completed a food drive. Our student body of 263 students brought in over 700 pounds of food for the local food bank. Talk about helping out a community in need from one that is also in need. #MasteryChat
A6: Sandyhook Promise: start with hello. It's a program to help students develop relationships with their peers and be inclusive. Our students were selected as ambassadors to share the message w/ younger students & shared the program at a county summit.
#MasteryChat
A6 our HS does Senior Day of Caring under the direction of an amazing teacher Our MS student forum has an annual food drive, and our NJHS collects items like socks and scarves during the holidays for veterans and seniors #MasteryChat
A6 This is our second year raising oysters. After measuring and studying to see how they work, they then get to transplant them into the waterway near our school. Gives them a new respect for keeping our beaches and water clean. #MasteryChat
Right! My ideas tend to come from listening to @TEDRadioHour on Sat afternoon and then I search for other TED talks about similar topics in time for something to talk about on Monday AM! #MasteryChat

A6 my 5th gr Ss last yr read a @Newsela article about a man who went to jail and became literate and ended up defending himself and getting out and starting a book exchange in his neighborhood to keep kids out of jail They became obsessed and we researched #masterychat
A6: Working with a group of 4th graders to hold a recycling contest & an AR (@hpreveal) eco-friendly scavenger hunt through their school. Kids are fearless! Here's the logo they created on @canva#masterychat
A5: I address current events through literature. I just finished reading The Hate U Give with my Ss. We were able to have rich conversations because my students could relate to the characters and the events in the novel. #masterychat
I had so much fun chatting with everyone tonight! If this is your first time hearing about #globaled, I hope that you’ve gotten some great ideas to start incorporating global and multicultural learning in your classes! #masterychat
A6: In 2011, when Japan was hit by a Tsunami, our SCA Ss wanted to make and sell origami cranes and sell them for a fundraiser. Our school even made it on the news- all money was donated for Tsunami relief aid. #masterychat#LoveLiteracyLearning
A6 Our Student Council also has a weekly service project call "Fresh Friday." The student council officers and representatives pick up trash on the field and sweep out each pod area right after school on Friday. They love giving back to our school. #masterychat
A5: To discuss current events but steer away from politics, use #TEACHSDGs#SDGs as a fantastic framework for engaging in the world's biggest challenges. #masterychat#globaledchat
#masterychat Q6 A service project is a great idea for a new initiative my District is trying out for next year for 4th and 5th graders called Student College. Sounds like a great idea to have a service project be a theme! Great ideas PLN!
The impacts of access to literacy can have on a community, we the. Read articles about ideas people have done to increase books in neighborhoods and they built from the ground up a @LtlFreeLibrary in our community
Thanks @kidwoldcitizen for doing AMAZING job tonight! I always love #masterychat and look forward to it every week. Can’t wait to see some of you during @connecting4cs conference in June!!
A6 at my last two schools we filled sandbags during the floods. Here we require community service but junior high volunteers for clean up of Annie’s House which is an adaptive ski program for handicapped and veterans. They love it #MasteryChat
I really like the idea of connecting with Ss from around the world to help learn about a culture while you are studying it! #masterychat#LoveLiteracyLearning
A6 We visited a nursing home this fall. We didn't do much besides have pie and talk w/ these wonderful ladies and gentlemen, but it meant so much to everyone involved #MasteryChat
Thank you so much for joining us!!! I look forward to collaborating soon!!!! #masterychat Make sure to follow your fellow teachers here to add to your PLN!
My big takeaway is: Each time I participate in a chat #masterychat which includes friends from many different countries and cultures I learn more about the world and myself! #BetterTogether Thank you!!
