I wish I had my son and DIL to help with the Shakespeare! It's his birthday today too!
Q How many breakout boxes recommended for a class of 20? Could the whole class use the one breakout box? I am a newbie.
Sometimes “breaking out” requires a little help from a friend. Have you been collaborating? 12 minutes remain!
what grade levels are they intended for?
Wikipedia is your friend too!
Good morning from Indianapolis.
shares awesome middle school experiences! https://t.co/TqM1brlhHN
=AMAZING & ENGAGING way to look at things in new ways, think critically, & be creative while problem solving.
. I loved Sydney when I was there for Google Certified Innovators Academy in 2013 So much fun
You think, "It's a box of locks... how could that be fun?" Then you will see what happens when students try to get in..MAGIC
You would be fine with one. There are activities geared toward lg grps OR you can break a lg grp into teams
shares amazing elementary adventures with https://t.co/fidhZ89jc6
Excited to share about today at Been fun to use with teachers and kiddos!
I've had 20 Ss use 1 box. Depending on Ss you may want to form teams, or just watch what happens.
Good morning from rainy Pennsylvania.
Christy from OC, CA. I have done one Breakout EDu-Harder than I anticipated.
Use whatever resources you can to
BreakoutEdu is the PERFECT tool to energize kids and get them collaborating - a fun thing for ANY age group - PreK to adult!
Great to meet you here Nick.
Is it cheating if you’re using resources to help you “breakout?” We hope you aren’t avoiding Google! https://t.co/NorLegWR1a
Early elementary all the way through adult.
My daughter’s birthday, too!
Devices are encouraged during !
Does everyone have the link to the virtual breakout? How much time left?!
My first Breakout didn't go at all how I planned... lol... just like every lesson I've ever taught. :)
You'll be hooked! Everywhere you look you will be seeing possibilities!
PreK - Kinder kids can practice numbers and letters with codes on locks - they can break out too!
All ages! They can be customized and created for all subjects and topics!
Just means an opportunity for learning for you too...right?
Hi from STL, tech coordinator
So glad you could join today
has also designed for faculty meetings! https://t.co/kpjHvhF1qi
You think, "It's a box of locks... how could that be fun?" Then you will see what happens when students try to get in..MAGIC
Only 5 mins remaining in our virtual experience! If you haven’t looked for help yet - now might be a good time!
I disappeared but I BROKE OUT!
Get old book and cut out a hole in the center... put something inside... hide it on the bookshelf... you're now like a spy.
awk! Stuck! what am I don't wrong with puzzle 3?
Can’t wait to read later! Thanks!
People have started to Congrats!!!
Was that who falls in love with who?
Good morning from sunny northern Saskatchewan. Sorry to be late, I was wide awake between 1& 4 this morning & then slept in
all lowercase and follow formating request need the colon no psaces
is now trending in USA, ranking 28
I love that helps kids and adults tap into their imagination, creativity, and NEED to collaborate = AUTHENTIC!
Using Data Validation in Google sheets with for vitrual breakout
be sure using all lowercase and the punctuation it says
So AWESOME!! Which box did you use and was it the first time using it with them?
Time’s Up! Our virtual has come to close. Thank you again, for creating the experience for us!
Ha! Was just thinking would be a fun year-end for our 1st year faculty/staff Ignatian Formation group :-)
I managed to break out! Must have been cuz I was in that play as a kid!
ANY topic will work: Historical event? Math problem solving? A book your class has read? Art history?
Q1a: How did you do? Were you able to “break out?”
Got the idea from the WWI game in the sandbox
Yes! They will love it! You can create questions around things that will be good for them to "find out"
A1a: I didn't breakout. ;-(
All these words make me happy! https://t.co/6XeUuCqW7D
I love that helps kids and adults tap into their imagination, creativity, and NEED to collaborate = AUTHENTIC!
Could you link to the trailer again? I couldn’t use the link.
Thanks Debbie ... I hate to not get out :)
Q1b What did you think of that experience? If you enjoyed it, what made it enjoyable? If you did not, please share why.
I used the basic kit that comes - and it was the very first time they'd seen it. :)
I will still leave it open but our we will move on to the questions
Wish I hadn't arrived late to today!
Did you know is a Master Googler! https://t.co/xxhkt3c9Ca
Using Data Validation in Google sheets with for vitrual breakout
A1a: Yes - Just due to good Google search and image search skills.
Today is William Shakespeare's birth and death.
a big topic of convo among colleagues about breakout is teamwork vs. learning during a game
A1a - Yes! Once I was careful with my case and punctuation. Directions are always key
The Edcamp Foundation Organizer Summit is having us do a Breakout next Sunday
THIS hasp. It makes your1 box to break into have SIX locks to break in- great for a class team! https://t.co/p8iZZqoUr6
You have to be very specific so the data valadtation features works.
I did a fun one on Pi Day for my MS Ss. Solving circumference/area of circle for combos, etc.
Would love to do this w Ts first to spark interest. Don't understand what I actually have to prepare.
I need to buy more locks! LOL
That is one of those things I know but in the urgency to get out in time it is often overlooked
Ok, I have a lot to learn on but I'm going to enjoy learning.
a1b I am on the fence with breakout cuz it feels like I should be learning something about the random things I look up
Ok first time trying this completely lost! Lol! Typed lowercase in complete sentences or not, nut nothing worked!
Just wait til you go to purchase locks and supplies... strange looks from cashier. :)
The kids are the same way! Perfect time to discuss teamwork, etc. https://t.co/1YYAbPHj9p
Thanks Debbie ... I hate to not get out :)
the BreakoutEDU site has all you need, plus the Facebook group is super helpful!
Q1b: I like how you used pages in the experience to make it all online. Didn’t like the linear format. I understand why
Q2: What ideas do you have now for using in your classes (virtual or physical)?
Each game has different clues to print and set in place before it can be played.
Could you have broken out if you were collaborating with others? https://t.co/81nQ8IrtIr
A1a: I didn't breakout. ;-(
When I intro first time I share how I did not get out first time I played and it frustrated me. Share feelings
Not good at this need more practice but fun.
A2 I used a Faithbased one with my 3rd graders last Friday. Very fun! wrote it for Catholic Schools Week
Diane - when you have the kit or open source supplies, you can pick pre done game which walks through set up
Yes, Very fun! Even tho I didn't breakout!
I did it over the last two weeks. I will be writing a blog post later today about the “hows”
Normally 45 minutes is the normal game time shorted time and questions because chat format. It is still open to get certif.
becomes new thing to check out in stores. Sent hubby to Home Depot Thur. night for one
A2) I want to create a BreakoutEdu with Clues hidden around a Google Map - Oregon Trail? Geography? USA?
You have to tie it to content. The beta games have 150 from K-adult
It is great to use before or after a unit.
very important to debrief with students after the game to make sure no connections are lost
Add a little duct tape just for laughs!
Perfect! Can you please post the link to your blog?
This is completely new to me, but very interesting
Would you Tweet the link here when it's ready?
The debrief is often the best part of the whole activity. Good convos happen in all grades!
For the# - at least one box per 10 Ss if you have $. Otherwise 1 Kit will work, I use 1 kit with up to 25
I will have a blogpost for on my experience with game published in May.
Me, too! Maybe will share with us?
A2) I want to help teachers combine physical game with Google Form and data verification to help manage flow around box
A2: I can see this in use in class reviews and in PD sessions. Definitely need to get to the website and learn it all!
so true! Debriefing was very valuable.
Will look at the "hows" really need them.
What time factor you use it adds the excitement!
I highly recommend the Facebook group, too. They are an amazing grp of collaborators!
Also love that kids will want to do other games even when they "FAIL". happened with my class yesterday
the timer even has sound!
I tell Ss, "You WILL fail! The fun is trying until you succeed!"
Yes - the how helps. As a result several teachers are already borrowing my box and locks
After Ss didn't make it out, we debriefed, and they worked through the final problems, unlocking the locks.
I want to build one based on suggested PD we ask the Ts to work on through summer break or based on our summer book study
is about the critical thinking, problem solving and teamwork. Ss have to go beyond obvious.
Important for them to see what the mistakes were, and if you have time, for them to complete it.
Writing one for all around Disney clues. Want to help?
They are solving real problems, moving and not just giving the requried answer to get it done
That's what many of our Ss said they enjoyed about it. One said it wasn't "simple" thinking".
That sounds fun! What a great idea to even use at home to surprise fam with vacation plans!
Yes. So important to make it about the content and not just the experience.
I am always learning and love it
https://t.co/hmOUAQwwj9 allows create pages in a Website are password protected - Google Forms works too. Virtual clues!
which the kids love at first but don't as the time gets close and it gets dramatic!
YES! So important to show them what they needed to succeed.
The teacher steps back and observes - Ss are helping each other, thinking differently. Kids engaged
Q3: If you’ve done before, what advice would you give a first-timer? How/Should the facilitator prep students?
Yes It’s nice music and as a teacher you get used to knowing Bolero signals last 11 minutes.
Get creative with hiding clues... under tables, inside balloons, behind clock, in a video on a device, inside a book
A3 Be ready to step back! Hard not to step in. I warned my kiddos of this!
Enjoying lurking and learning
It is the Thinking our kids need to do. It takes practice. It also highlights strengths of different Ss.
A3 Use the video setup to help you! It is amazing, especially in the beginning. Use a colleague, too, when setting up.
I really love the idea of making them based around Catholic connections too
I broke out! I need to share this with our theater teacher-we are doing this play this year!
A3 explain what it will look like, the rules, that they should keep trying, may want to talk about communication
I have to share your Catholic Schools Week one with the teachers now
It's also good just to have the exp. Kids still need to have fun w/o being assessed.
A3 Show Ss the tricks of the locks. Directional lock must be pumped twice between tries, lockbox slides to one side to open,
Also thinking about it as ice-breaker for Province workshop. Thanks for ideas!!
Yes! I tell them hints will NOT be answers
thanks for the The directional lock scares me!
Easy for iLab time! Develop strategy skills. Gets them prepared for more elaborate games.
I stuck one inside a Mr Potato Head once!
find my honors classes have a harder time bc used to easy not thinking and rethinking
I wonder if it is bc they are used to things coming easy to them? Gifted Ss had some of the same struggles
May I share this form with our TA teacher? We are doing this play this year.
Instead of hints calls them 'lives' Do you want to lose one of your lives?
Tying it even more to game play! I like it!
Q4: How would you use at the elementary level? At the secondary level? With staff?
Yes! reg class got way further yesterday than my H group more willing to keep at it. Don't whine when hard
YES! If you forget that, they will get frustrated! (And won't be happy w/you when you tell them!) https://t.co/OUf8oq0k2K
A3 Show Ss the tricks of the locks. Directional lock must be pumped twice between tries, lockbox slides to one side to open,
Q3 Tell students look around, under, every piece of paper is a clue. Don’t be afraid to search online to fill in the blanks
Ask he developed the game. https://t.co/nyIxkbZM0I
May I share this form with our TA teacher? We are doing this play this year.
Yes please share my contact info with her.
A4 I just emailed my principal to see if I can use the Teamwork breakout in August with my teachers.
Many of our struggling Ss did really well. They think differently. It was so exciting to see them celebrated.
I am doing that one this week! It looks great, and I have heard positive things about it.
Good news is Home Depot carries directional lock had to buy night before first student game
A4 I also played Candy Crush at and Time warp at both fun!
Yes! The directional lock needs to be squeezed shut before trying the combination is really important!
That's what I want to do, but I still don't get it exactly.
We put green stickers on all clues, so they wouldn't get thrown off by other paper in the room.
a3 - get to the chat on time so you can find the link! ;) treat first time as a practice run, be ok with failing
A4 I love Dr. Johnson and the Zombie Game
A3 So important for Ss to know they can use any & all tools to find answers same for Ts.
So true were so excited to have gotten further than other class School often tells them they aren't as "good"
This is another great idea. Or maybe put the logo on it
A3 wondering if I should us a no-tech game for my teachers or a 'can use devices' game with my teachers.
I have also had other kids give the hint. They do not want to give it away, give great hints.
Edcamp what did you say ; ) (shameless plug) June 4, 2016, join us! https://t.co/Fb1amHRsjJ
Writing one for all around Disney clues. Want to help?
Sometimes my hints just ask them to tell me what is in front of them. What do you see? What do you think it means?
YouTube awesome timers in various amounts that work GREAT to add to drama of "Countdown" in game. https://t.co/k5QopIDRtL
Diane - we can help you to figure it out! You know how to find us
If you do a no-tech, lock up their phones in the last box and making them work together to get them out!
Ss are so used to following directions, w I Don't give the directions, make them figure out what to do.
That is first one I played. We didn't get out! :( Learned so much from that
A3 An icebreaker for PD, for HS, a way to use those days when they are squirrely, rally days!
Q4 Could use with staff to review Charlotte Danielson evaluation model - lots of numbers there!
that's ok, great questions and answers are coming in now!
Q4: With ss review, introduce concepts, book discussions. Ts to introduce and demonstrate strategies.
I did it as a way to get into classrooms. Told Ts I would plan 45 min of their time for them during testing week!
I have not either but trying to keep up with chat need to try when nothing else is going on.
I think no-tech involves more tmwrk. If all have tech, they can search alone and not collab.
Have even told a group they should have listened to one of their members 10 minutes ago :0
All games submitted on https://t.co/2vnZUl14oI There are Published and Beta games which go through a review process
I saw it at Target too - but Amazon could be cheaper especially if free shipping
That is often part of the experience!
and Sandbox games which have not been reviewed. You may browse all games, use bits and pieces or the whole game
We have our fair this weekend so yesterday was great to do with 7th grade last 2 periods of day
I’m still really new to this Thanks
All games are free, everyone has freely shared. Join Facebook group for more interaction w those using
Thinking maybe every gradelevel will have to "Breakout" on their first visit to makerspace in the fall... teambuilding.
There is a game that has to do with growth mindset, from what I have been hearing!
depends on the game too some games tech is not much help since games are password protected
Yep ... but night before emergencies happen. No Target close by
Had 1 where the girls had the answer, but boys wouldn't listen. Pointed it out after, it was eye opeing.
That is such a powerful moment for them!
Creating games: Where do you find ideas for games? From where do you draw inspiration?
Fun to listen to a group IGNORE the one with the right answer.
I played for second time at - we did get out that time :)
I get inspiration from other games. Also, amazing how your brain starts thinking after you do one.
Thank u! Would love to do w/ Ts so they would want to do w/ Ss. Just need to see it in action.
Not at the point where I would want to create my own game, so many great games already created on the site.
Yes - it is everything we want our kids doing in a fun little box!
Their faces were priceless when I told them should have listened to team member 10 mins ago valuable lesson there
And more fun to video it and watch them as you play it back.
have experienced chaos when multiple clues have been found and are being explored independently
Last day of school would be super fun time for a BreakoutEdu. Engage the kids up to the last bell!
When Ss see me walking down hall w. box, they start whispering excitedly and asking if I am coming to their room!
anyone experienced tears, frustration from Ss
makes for great discussion and learning. I am about embracing the mess
No tears, yes frustration. Many will distance themselves and watch what is going on at that point
I am doing that one this week! It looks great, and I have heard positive things about it. | More: https://t.co/uZWjyPjOtp
Good news is Home Depot carries directional lock had to buy night before first student game | More: https://t.co/uZWjyPjOtp
I talked with one student ahead of time, privately, to discuss this.
Love when this happens. We see Ss differently and they see themselves differently! https://t.co/HsVd2dK2t5
Many of our struggling Ss did really well. They think differently. It was so exciting to see them celebrated.
Does anybody have a video of a Breakout in action?
Have a feeling this week's Storify will be on the greatest hits list.
Keep eye out for that - slip students who withdrawing an "extra" clue to take to team.
someone in the FB group shared a few weeks ago. She used periscope to share
Yep 7th graders made me promise would play with them before end of year when came back to computer
Pick the thing you enjoy teaching the least. I think it renergizes you!
Yes! Some give up We talk about that during debrief. I let them struggle during game time
It’s important to think about keeping the learning and engagement going to the https://t.co/PZrrNin2mW
Last day of school would be super fun time for a BreakoutEdu. Engage the kids up to the last bell!
Ss who stare at wrkshts, are engaged &working. One who is Never Engaged is engaged more than 50% w
Q6: Where can Ts go to find games that would suit their level & content area? What are your favorite resources?
Think about self I back out watch, pop in with thought or ques then step back and watch and think
A6 I need to make a Pinterest board.
I took some 7 or 8 second videos. I have to put them together and ask teachers for permission to post
SUPER cool to do an ALL SCHOOL Breakout. Every class gets one letter to spell out a message on a board in front hall.
Be sure to join the group! You will not be disappointed! Lots of sharing.
Check my feed - My periscope from yesterday may still be there for a bit longer
That's why I think Ts need to do it, so they can see it is alright to have different levels of participation
didn't you write a game for PE?
We had 5th grade Ss create one for K-1 Ss. They did awesome!
That’s a great end of year idea!
Speaking of TIPS - Put locks back in the box LOCKED. 1 of mine reset because I left it open and squeezed it w/ unknown combo
I think it is great to play before trying to run one. Gives personal tie to the experience
Eek! Good plan! I also keep a spreadsheet of the combos I have used for each. Makes it easier for me!
Congrats is amazing group. Life chaning!
You can use the Facebook group, too. Many ideas are shared there.
Yes, I wrote one for PE, & for Spanish. Just did a Little Red Riding Hood, and a math. All onBreakout EDU
It was awesome. We even had baby breakout boxes sent ahead and had to play online before arriving
If you want a great game has created some GREAT ones!
Have to run now. This was fun!
Make sure the combo is set where you think before you close the box! Ss changed it on accident while messing w/it.
Many thanks to for sharing their expertise with
Need to head out! Thank you This is a great topic! Did your box arrive?
Had WHOLE school Breakout b4 Spg Break. Rescue Principal frm alternate Universe, or no Break. Ss loved it. Multi age groups
Also remember what codes you used last in case there is a break between using
What if your class had to Breakout to get to field day, special all school movie, or other fun event?
That was fun! Thanks for asking me
When I started, I wrote a clue for each lock, and kids worked in stations (2nd grade) we called it Escape to Recess.
Thank YOU, for inviting me to moderate today! Enjoy the rest of your weekend!
Thank you to regulars who shared their experience
Thanks for letting me join in today! I couldn't pass up a chat on BreakoutEDU!
Thanks for having us! Fun to share about something makes FUN real in school.
At last I made it out thank you for the challenge
I agree - teachers should try 1st Saw a great 1 with Kinder sheets that open one directional lock
thank you for sharing your
