HSSocialMedia : RT txhsfbchat: Welcome to #TXHSFBCHAT for the best time on twitter with your fellow high school football coaches! sponsored by Sky_Coach https://t.co/mY2bqJlizw
Tonight our topic is Field Position. Watching the National Championship game, I was impressed with the way BAMA stayed in the game with their defense and field position wins #TXHSFBCHAT
I'm also excited because #TXHSFBCHAT has been going strong for 3 full years this week! To celebrate, 1 lucky coach who checks in and answers all the Qs will be randomly selected to win an @xoclinics membership!
Hi all! Just wanted to say hi and check out our clinic schedule! Come see us! https://t.co/YKmCkqfdo2#TXHSFBCHAT Wish we could be at Glazier and Nike COY but Hudl pays to keep us out!
Our format is Q1:A1. Make sure you answer as many Qs and engage with other coaches to continue your learning process. Tag every tweet with the hashtag #TXHSFBCHAT

A1: it impacted it greatly. We usually averaged a 15 to 20 yard advantage on opponents this year. Our offense averaged 45 points, one reason is the field position #txhsfbchat#badgerbarbarians
A1: Field position is key! We started a freshman QB the latter part of the season so it was all the more imperative that we put him in a position to succeed. #txhsfbchat
A1: This helped huge in defense too. Make offenses drive the field, they are going to make a mistake at some point, when they do, capitalize on it. #txhsfbchat
A1 - we weren’t a team that typically sustained long drives - obviously the more explosives we had to string together the tougher to score. #TXHSFBCHAT
A1: Quite a bit. We didn't have guys upfront who could put together a long sustained drive very often. Good field position was very important to us. If pinned deep, it was tough to score #TXHSFBCHAT
A1: Special teams played pretty well so we usually had decent field position. We were in trouble when we got pinned though, hard to drive 80+ yards #txhsfbchat
A1: Didn't affect us much. 2 minute drive or 8 minute drive...went for it on 4th down about 95% of the time. Now penalties and such, diff story... #txhsfbchat
A1: Luckily for us THIS YEAR it really didn't (Our O averaged 550+ yds/game. We got the ball, we drove.) That said - having a punt returner not catch a ball giving up 15-25 yards of roll made me CRAZY. Yrs past, I wanted to start on 35 worse-case #TXHSFBCHAT
A1: the further the offense must go, and the more plays they run the greater the chance a 16 or 17 year old kid makes a mistake. You can have a really good defense in HS if you just keep the ball in front of you. #txhsfbchat
A1: Spec Ops helped flip field position on several occasions. Was the reason we won our qtr final game, keeping a team that averaged 51 pts a game to 14, only letting them pass the 50 twice, keeping them buried. Punting can be winning. #txhsfbchat
A1. It went both ways. As a DC last year, strong kick off/punt coverage gave us the ability to play tough defense, make the O drive the length of the field. Offensively, it wasn’t rocket science. Getting the ball in opponent territory helped put points on the board #TXHSFBCHAT
A1)Our D isn't as affected by field position. We have to get them off schedule, usually that happens early in drives. Plus as there is less field, our aggression and speed can make more of an impact. Sometimes the compressed field is a win for us. #txhsfbchat
A1: I wouldn’t say it affected our scoring. It did change my mentality as a play caller in not wanting to go three and out giving the other team a short field. Once we got past the -30 or so things could open up more. -40 was 4 down territory with 2 or less to go. #txhsfbchat
A1 Depended on how good the defense was we were playing that week. It was usually shooting ourselves in the foot more than field position that was a problem. #TXHSFBCHAT
A1 Huge impact. The deeper in the negative we were, the tougher it was for us to score.. Momentum was important, when you’re getting the ball deep on your side of field, you’re probably on the wrong end of the momentum #TXHSFBCHAT
A1 #TXHSFBCHAT not sure on starting field pos. But off quick look- 9 TD's were from 40+ yds out,&we had multiple long drives this season I can think of.
Can't panic & gotta do what you do on long drives & I think field position isn't as big of a deal.
If you panic then kids panic
A1) field position was a huge key in our success, but we often got the ball around our own 25-40. Our offense was designed to sustain drives and grind the ball! Had success for the most part #txhsfbchat
19 yards of roll. That's two first downs the O has to get back. Our goal is total return yards minus penalities in the black. The goal is zero penalties and 1 one yard return....seriously. #TXHSFBCHAT
A1)We had decent field position throughout the year, so that wasn't a big problem. But we made sure to practice certain plays on the field throughout the week just in case. #txhsfbchat
HSSocialMedia : RT txhsfbchat: Q2: What are your goals when you are, or have your opponent pinned inside the 10 yard line on your side of the field? #TXHSFBCHAT
A2: we are looking to create a score. Depending on gameplan will stay in base or go to a certain pressure call. At worst keep them pinned to give our offense excellent field position #txhsfbchat
A1: Huge effect if we're backed up it's tough but I think it holds true for most teams field position is huge for scoring unless you are just overmatched #txhsfbchat
A1: Not as much as most years. We were very aggressive this year due to having great WR on the outside. We could stretch defenses pretty quickly. We want to score quickly though so Field position is something we heavily emphasize to our defense and special teams. #TXHSFBCHAT
A2: opponent pinned inside the 10.. take chance on early downs when offenses tend to be conservative. 3rd and long inside 10.. Play coverage and close windows. #TXHSFBCHAT
A2: we are looking to create a score. Depending on gameplan will stay in base or go to a certain pressure call. At worst keep them pinned to give our offense excellent field position #txhsfbchat
A2 #txhsfbchat
Offensively-want to end the possession with a kick that gives them the ball on opposite side of 50. Don't care if it's a punt or a PAT->KO
Defensively-we want the ball back on our side of the 50. Don't give up a big play. And try to force them to panic
A2: make them feel uncomfortable to the maximum, bringing pressure to stop the run or giving them not a lot of time to get the ball off. #TXHSFBCHAThttps://t.co/dndDtktfJ2
A2: get the ball back for offense ASAP. Eliminate big play, a lot of offenses look for a chunk play when backed up. Always looking for a take-a-way but the payoff is even greater if you can steal one with the O backed up #txhsfbchat
A2 - when we are pinned - it’s important to control what you can control - run what you are great at and have confidence. Defensively - do you, execute. #txhsfbchat
A2 #txhsfbchat
Offensively-want to end the possession with a kick that gives them the ball on opposite side of 50. Don't care if it's a punt or a PAT->KO
Defensively-we want the ball back on our side of the 50. Don't give up a big play. And try to force them to panic #txhsfbchat
A2: I'm an OLine coach and we platoon, so when D's on the field, I'm over doing film study in front of our monitors with our O. (Thank you @Sky_Coach!) We rarely punted inside the 50 so not a lot of pinned in Os. HOWEVER if they were, NO 1st Downs and NO PENALTIES!!!!#TXHSFBCHAT
A2: My goal is to get the hell out of there. I wish I had the nerve to be like Bobby Bowden and sling it when backed up with the defense not expecting it. “Buckle up, one of us is fixing to score!” I think our DC may try to throw me off the press box though.
#TXHSFBCHAT
A2: we are looking to create a score. Depending on gameplan will stay in base or go to a certain pressure call. At worst keep them pinned to give our offense excellent field position #txhsfbchat
A2)We want to take the advantage of their conservative play calling. But on the same level its the most field we have to defend. I think its the hardest part of the game to call. It is also can be the least "studied", how many clips do you get via exchange? #txhsfbchat
Q2:A2 we want the ball moving forward in that situation w our dive, midline, lead less than trying to get outside. It could also force us to tighten our punt form based on where the block is coming from or if we are inside the 5 #TXHSFBCHAT
A2: Inside the 10 we have to come away with 6. We practice goal line offense every day. We expect to have the right play for scoring inside the 10 every time. We we pin.. we are aggressive on 1st and 2nd down. We want to force a turnover or secure a 3 and out. #TXHSFBCHAT
A.2 D, make them work to get out. Play strong base, big fan of A gap blitz when having a team pinned. O, ball security and leaning on those big boss up front. Win the Man v Man battle up front, violent running behind it. At the same time, creativity is 🔑. #TXHSFBCHAT
A2: Goal is always to score, but we want to get first downs, and at least flip the field if we can’t get points. Never wanna give the other guys the ball in our territory #TXHSFBCHAT
Offensively wanting to take a deep shot, but often play it safe look for a run play that could work. Like verticals but it’s a bit risky -defensively want to bring a different look or blitz than they have seen. #txhsfbchat
A3: Depends on Distance, Punt team, what is the punt team???? on defense make sure we get them off the field #txhsfbchat 4th and less than 2, we probably going fast
A3: All depends on the situation in the game. Never afraid to go for it or fake a punt, but always play good defense that I’m okay with punting too. Goes for + & - side! #TXHSFBCHAT
A2: Offensively don't turn it over, no penalties, get at least 1. On defense be smart don't give up a cheap big play off a simple mistake or penalty make them punt and we should get the ball at the 50 or better. #txhsfbchat
A2: 3 and out!! Know what they like to do in that situation and put some pressure on them, and we're getting ball back if we have to rip their arm off in the process #txhsfbchat
A3: Again, it depends on who we are playing, game flow, situation. Sometimes you’ve got to take a chance, sometimes you’ve got to pin them deep. #txhsfbchat
A3: Our team and HC philosophy is to go for it in short yardage situation as much as possible, no matter where. My personal is a little more conservative. On the - side of the 50, I'm going to punt most of the time and flip the field #TXHSFBCHAT
A3: We talk about this everyday in staff meetings. When In that grey area from -40 to +40 it’s a feel of game, we might fake or go with O. When In big + territory usually going for it unless long yardage, in big - territory, we are punting and playing field position #txhsfbchat
A3) We tend to keep the D out on the field, in those situations. I want the ball back, turnover on downs or punt doesn't matter. The scouting report will dictate the call, #txhsfbchat
#txhsfbchat a3) truly depends on game situation and distance. Would like to go for it if we are on our side of the 50 with in reason. On the other side of the 50 depends on how well our offense is flowing.
A.3. On the + side, more aggressive on 4th down. Where were from, same kids play O and D so they know the consequences. 4 and 3 or less, good chance I’m getting gutsy. - side of the 50, punt, live to fight another day. All obviously depends on clock and situation #TXHSFBCHAT
A3: 4th down on the opp side, we take into account the distance, opponent, time in the game, momentum. Opposite of that if we haven’t reached the 50 yd we are trying to get off the best punt we can to flip the field. #txhsfbchat
A3 #Txhsfbchat
As position coach I respect my bosses decisions first of all.
I think game situation makes a huge impact on this.
On + side I want a strong play to get the sticks
On - side I think you have to be more conservative. Trick punt maybe, but as a Def guy I prep for that
A3: Go For It! We platoon and face our D daily in practice. We've got Gandalf 🧙🏽♂️for our DC and he/they are great yr-in-and-yr-out. i.e. utmost confidence our D will holdem. If evenly matched - Punt upon pain of death. #TXHSFBCHAT
A3: how good is my punt team?is it shootout or a defensive grind?how much greater is our chance of stopping them backed up?all these things have to be thought about before going for it or punting. #txhsfbchat
A3) I am very aggressive on 4th Down. Not quite like @coachkelley1 But my philosophy is much more aligned with going for it instead of wasting downs. Now, if you have a below average offense, or are playing in one of those grinder games, be smart about it. #txhsfbchat
A3: This can all be quantified. We follow this study when making 4th down decisions... Generally it calls for "going for it." You're giving away points if you don't.
https://t.co/LVLgWiK0kU#TXHSFBCHAT
When I was at Lakeside we had some kids do some great work stating when we should go for it and not. (I am talking crazy advance metrics). We would almost always go for it. I was probably the limiter. Took that to Greenhill. #TXHSFBCHAT
My problem with these 4th Down studies (I have read them and love them) is that they are looking at NFL statistics. In the NFL, teams and players are incredibly equal in ability and talent. In HS things are so wildly different from team to team that stats can lie.
#txhsfbchat
A3: If were on the + side with manageable yardage there's a good chance we go for it. If we're in the -40 to 50 and need 5 or less there's a good chance we go for it or fake punt. Confidence in defense and knowing time & score plays a huge factor though #txhsfbchat
A3) If it’s less than 2 yards I want to go for it. Try to take pride with my group in being able to pick up 2 yards. But it’s also much easier to say that when you’re not making the calls! #txhsfbchat
A4: Again, for us it’s flow of game, can we get something on them with our offense or not. If we are feeling good, going for it, if not, punt, pin them deep and let the defense eat. #txhsfbchat
A3: Unless we are way backed up (-25) we are only punting on 4th and long or chew situations. We are high tempo. So we are going to line up and make a call. If we like it we go. If not we will freeze. Most of the time we like it. #TXHSFBCHAT
A4: As a defensive guy the easy answer is I want to play good enough defense where I’m cool with punting. However, I also want to be able to go for it when the time is right because I trust my defense. #TXHSFBCHAT
A4)We are playing "NO FAKES" usually cover 1, may not have the returner very deep. Again we just want the ball, so we try to not talk the other team into fakes. #txhsfbchat
Don’t be afraid to be aggressive when you have rhythm/or gaining momentum, but don’t force it out of desperation. Gotta play to win, and not to “not lose.” #TXHSFBCHAT
A3: On average, you will score slightly more points than your opponent if you get a 1st down on your own 27. Odds increase from there.
https://t.co/LVLgWiK0kU#TXHSFBCHAT
A3: Don’t be afraid to be aggressive when you have rhythm/or gaining momentum, but don’t force it out of desperation. Gotta play to win, and not to “not lose.” #TXHSFBCHAT
A4: in this situation it will probably depend more how much time is left in the game and what the score is. More than likely depending where the wide side of the field is, looking for possible roll out pass or our quick kick punt from gun. #txhsfbchat
A4 #txhsfbchat
Depends on the game- the situation, who we're playing, is it 4th down because of their execution or our lack of it? What's the score.
Cop out answer lol, but I feel like it all goes in to the decision and is truthful in my eyes
HSSocialMedia : RT txhsfbchat: Q4: You're in the grey area where it's too far for a FG, and 4th and medium...how do you decide whether to go for it or punt? #TXHSFBCHAT
A4) more then likely get the defense to jump freeze call or something of that nature then if that doesn’t work call a bread and butter play. Like a quick kick as well! #txhsfbchat
A4: Well probably go for it majority of the time better chance of getting a first and pinning them deeper or scoring not going to get many opportunities in plus field position against good teams have to take all the chances you can get #txhsfbchat
A4: We got a hold of Coach Kelly from Pulaski Academy via email 3 years ago. Everything is quantified. Kids love the mentality, 4th becomes "just another down."
https://t.co/M4Nzv4fTbF#TXHSFBCHAT
A4: If we're CLOSE to FG range, going for it much more predictable outcome (lot of bad things can happen when punting in this area. Likely as not to punt it into endzone so take the chance with O.⚒️ ⚒️ #TXHSFBCHAT
A.4. It’s once again a situational thing but O and D coordinators can get in groves. Best 11 play where we are from, so if it’s 4th and medium, obviously O is not in a groove. Punt, pin em back, make them work. If we’re field goal distance...going for first down. #txhsfbchat
A4: depends on game situation, but outside of that gonna depend on the ability of the punt team. Only way I’m going to punt it is if I’m confident my Punt team can pin it inside the 10, otherwise I’m going for points #TXHSFBCHAT
A4: We have designated plays for this situation based on what our opponent likes defensively on medium situations. We are probably running a concept on one side and shot on the other. We will take the best pre snap read. We had a ton of success with it this season. #TXHSFBCHAT
A5: Flippingthe field is merely added pressure to the opponent. It allows you to be more aggressive in play calling and taking advantage of them in a series of events. #TXHSFBCHAT
A5: On offense, creating more opportunities to score. On defense, a chance to create a big play to score or lead to score while at worst creating great field position for offense when they get the ball back. #txhsfbchat
a5: a chance to pin team that plays good defense but offense is not great or clicking that night is huge. To me punt team or kickoff team should be the most practiced spt #txhsfbchat
A5 #txhsfbchat
It's a mentality booster.
We just pinned them, now we have the opportunity to be more aggressive and force them to panic.
Have to go with peaks and valleys & this gives us a chance to put them in a valley. Create opportunities for defensive or easy offensive scores
A4 cont: we have also had success lining up like we're going to go for it and then quick kicking catch most teams off guard and have nobody back #txhsfbchat
A5: in this situation such as a big turnover, this is where we are more likely to take one of our shots we plan a game. Or we get it flipped on us, use our run style offense to regain momentum and establish 1st downs. #TXHSFBCHAT
A5: We try to play solid defense and get the ball back to our offense ask quick as possible to take advantage of the field position they created. #txhsfbchat
A5: We don’t emphasize “flipping” the field as much as we emphasize pinning deep on kick-off. We want the football and we want to run as many plays as we can. So our emphasis is on running our offense as fast as possible. We don’t focus on punting. It works for us. #TXHSFBCHAT
A5: I believe momentum is a big deal in HS football and pinning a team deep is a big momentum swing if nothing else. I think that leads to better focus and execution #TXHSFBCHAT
A5)Playing D is like being the away team in baseball, you have to do it twice. We get them pinned deep, flipped the field then we have to hold and execute on specials to make it count. #6outs#txhsfbchat
A5. It is simply a tactical advantage. Allows you to be way more aggressive off the rip, which is difficult for anybody to deal with when they are backed up. Can’t think about who ya got when two or three are coming at you #txhsfbchat
A5: It's a big momentum booster you can get more aggressive with play calling on both sides of the ball. A lot more likely to take some shots and keep the opponent on their heels #txhsfbchat
