Hey there #XPLAP and @mrmatera. I'm Adam from SC. On my wish list is Pandemic, The Resistance, 2 Rooms and a Boom, Madden 19, NBA Live, ummm.... So many games!
Hello #xplap community! Jordan Billings 7th grade social studies in Olathe KS. I am asking for the expansion to the Harry Potter Battle for Hogwarts Deck Building Game
Hey #xplap Finally got a moment to check in on this chat again. John 3rd Grade T from STL MO Not sure I have anything on my Christmas list this year... but a nice craft beer is always welcome

Scott from Chicago Suburbs. I'm interested in games as well, like @MrPowley. There were so many mentioned on #wellplayed this morning. Also, anything about #pickleball. I started playing in January and I'm hooked. #xplap
jay from NE, MS science teacher. Right now I'm wishing for a day to sleep for the holiday wish list. Hopefully Santa can get that in his sleigh for me. #xplap
#XPLAP came at a great time. I am struggling putting the final touches on a big post regarding the Sacred and the Profane - Narrative, Context, and Ritual.
Hi #xplap Patrick Amel grade 4 teacher from Oshkosh, WI. The only think I can think of for my holiday wish list right now are those great @bucks warm up hoodies.
Will Dunn; Lawrence, KS; Tonganoxie HS (Math).
I hoping for an Apple Watch. Or my mortgage to be paid off. Take your pick; I’m not greedy.
Ball’s in your court, Santa.

A1: Oh I figured some of this out this year! I have a mod Flip. (this is really too much for a Tweet). I have choice of recordings, choice of product, choice of due dates... Completion rates and effort way up! #XPLAP
A1: A few years ago, I created flipped lectures for all my units (8 per unit). With a shift to SBG, I do deep-dives into content, so instead of notes over the whole video, Ss watch at their own pace & I provide a focus topic to reduce needless copying of unneeded info #xplap
A1: I have students use their notes for more than studying - create a foldable or game; doodle and diagram. Tests and Boss battles are open note. This reinforces that having good notes is valuable #XPLAP
A1 3rd grade doesn't have a ton of note taking. But try to get Ss sharing/discussing what they do write down so that A) they do it and B) they can collaborate as they learn the process of what is important vs interesting #xplap
I have made the same offer as part of my "Super Powers' avatars. Weird thing is that most dont use their notes even with the option. The effort caused by the incentive actually negates the need for the incentive! #XPLAP
A1- I try and do a blended approach with a short engaging video (5 min) and use EdPuzzle to create questions mixed in so students can answer and watch at their own pace. I typically watch their answers and encourage students to reword anything they miss in the video #xplap
My Ss can use their notes on assessments, so making sure they understand that whatever they write down can be of value is a good first step. We develop definitions and examples together with student-friendly language. I use diff. colors for diff. steps
with math examples.#XPLAP
A1 so not sure if this is copyrighted but my Ss understand and use “Stoplight 🚥 highlighting” green is good to go need to review less than 2 min., yellow slow down and review for at least 5-10 min., and red STOP study for a good 20-30 min. #xplap
A1) They’re called “meaningful notes” (or, “notes to our future, dumber self”). I’m not an expert (yet), but they are part of @pgliljedahl’s broader instructional framework “Building #ThinkingClassrooms”.
Check out the research and practitioners.
@thinkingclssrms#xplap
A1 Over the course of career my approach to note taking has changed a lot—from “do it MY way” to just giving them the notes to “free notes” to—after the AWESOME session with @HeckAwesome HiveSummit—sketchnoting! It’s been amazing to see different approaches/relevance #XPLAP
A1. I use #QRBreakIN to turn traditional note taking into one in a series of self-guided work stations alongside bite-sized deliverables like @Flipgrid, @edpuzzle, and @quizizz. Scan the QR code to take notes, spot check & move on to the next station of your choice! #xplap
A1 I have always taught littles but this year as travel around to all of the classes at my school, I am introducving Ts and Ss to #Sketchnotes and @HeckAwesome as a way to take notes. #XPLAP
Your podcast today put some new ones on my list. I added a star to Clever (already there from your episode with your daughter) Now I also want the sky-tile one...as soon as I get into your notes & figure out exactly what it is. (Listening in a jeep is challenge). #XPLAP
Josh Stock, 6th grade ELA teacher from Olathe, KS joining in late because I’m so good at putting my son to bed that I managed to fall asleep too. #xplap
For me it is my second perk, right after choose your own seat. Usually obtained by week 2. I find the same thing. Most end up forgetting about it since it is the norm. #XPLAP
I was contemplating what makes the service so sacred - raises it above the profane. Thinking about the signals and mechanics and how it can be classroom applied. Hope I'm not taking someone elses' ideas is all... #XPLAP
No I don't think so...the book was about sacred spaces and how we view places around the world ( Battlefields, Holy Places, etc). I might have to search my selves and see if i still have it...been a few years 😄 #xplap
Foldables in my class give students a chance to use some different materials than our normal note-taking process. It can help students who struggle with free notes, but can lead to a 'recipe' effect for others and they may not make personal connections to the material. #XPLAP
A2: I think it does since they have to use several skills to put things together. Downside is the time it takes for them to create them. Often it's like, "you need to be done with that!" and "Yes, I do expect you to use a ruler" #XPLAP
A2: ISNs are great as a resource for Ss to refer to on assessments! The time involved in cutting & gluing in foldables/organizers does get frustrating. I’ve been trying to figure out how to merge them w/ my gamified class #xplap
A2: #XPLAP - there’s not really a lot of opportunities where students are “required” to take notes in my class, delivered 100% online. OneNote is offered in my district.
A2 INs are great for adding another layer to notetaking. Difficulty I ran into was 1) extra work outside of school for Ss 2) checking all of the notebooks. #XPLAP
Thank you! I think the beauty of the pedagogy has been how modular the centers can be - so things like a graphic organizer, #sketchnote, or simple timeline or plot map are super easy to swap in alongside any of usual set of activities. #xplap

A2 I have incorporated an “Interactive Notebook” for the about the last 7yrs. It provides a structure—activator strategy, input (basically some kind of notes), and then some kind of processing. Only downside is keeping up with it/accountability & maintaining organization. #XPLAP
Nice reflection… Still on the fence with this in my classroom. I think they could help my 6th graders, but there is an overhead cost of time cutting and gluing. #XPLAP
My kid discovered my Wii about two weeks ago, he doesn't quite have the button pushing figured out yet (so not sure about my NES) but he's getting pretty good at sword fighting. I don't even have to let him win all the time anymore. #xplap

A2: ISN's are good to add variety, but can be somewhat limiting if you keep them on paper. Not quite note-taking, but we are moving into digital portfolios. Love how @bulbapp has so many ways for the kids to show what they know. #XPLAP
A1: I usually spend a couple of days having the students do cloze notes, traditional notes, and sketch notes and then have them reflect on which one they like best. It's not flashy but it works. #xplap
A2: Yes, I think interactive notebooks help students obtain info/learn on a deeper level. Downside: could take away students' creativity of making their notes if these notebooks are used all of the time. #XPLAP
Check this one out too… It is a great party game for the fam. https://t.co/gId3K4BI6h
If you like code names I think you would love this one too! #XPLAP
Yes, and be sure to have extras, even when you explain it step by step and have an example. The overzealous student always cuts something they shouldn't. #XPLAP
A3 I like to have students stop and draw what they are thinking, or when modeling I will add pictures or mental images that come to my mind, like for Bacons rebellion I drew a bacon with a gun #xplap
A2 Interactive notebooks and foldables @dinahzike (my friend & my Ss enemy 😡) Teaching the skills of folding, cutting, gluing, and organization not a fun time for most Ss (downside) but the benefits outweigh that with retrieval, reflection, and kinesthetic learners #xplap
A3: I model #sketchnotes infrequently. I dont' feel confident/good with these personally yet so sort of feels like a square peg/round hole situation. But do offer it and encourage it with my Ss #xplap
A3: I start by modeling, then I use student examples to showcase proper execution. Sometimes I'll just add a graphic to what we're talking about, even if the two are loosely related. Ex: THG mockingjay w essay setup.
#xplap
A2- Yes I think that this is an engaging way to get students to do notes but it can be a time intensive activity...but once you get students into the process and do these sessions consistently students get used to it and the time investment pays off #xplap
Unfortunately, I have yet to try sketchnotes with my students. Not sure exactly how to implement them with my math class. I would love any suggestions! #XPLAP
A3: I’ve always allowed Ss to take notes in any style they preferred. This year, after seeing @HeckAwesome’s session @USMSpark I gave some instruction in sketch noting, & some Ss liked it, but I think I need a better structure to help them practice it. #xplap
A3: Yes. We have been dabbling in sketchnoting, and in science diagramming is a must (all about the models). I did have to first convince them that a drawing IS a model ;) #XPLAP
A3 Most of my Ss don't have a lot of exp taking notes before my class. #Sketchnotes are more fun and to challenge them to come up with images to represent concepts. We usually do a lot of our notes together so those that need a model have it. #XPLAP
A2.b I found that comp books are the best for interactive notebooks easy to store, do not get caught, like spirals, and won’t get damaged as easily (three ring binders) #xplap
A3 Sketchnoting was the first method I taught this year. I gave them sketch/note spiral notebooks with half blank half lines. Elevated and validated sketching as an option. #XPLAP
A3: #XPLAP - I’m well known for my exceptionally bad art skillz, so sharing #sketchnotes is often a hilarious way to engage. We listen to something together and then share our sketches, why’d I do that, draw this explained after I hear, “What the heck is THAT?”
When you are right there with them the first time it is a bit of a pain. Finding/creating for the first time, etc. Like everything, once you have some practice it is easier. #XPLAP
I don’t do a lot of drawing...partly because I don’t feel confident in drawing, and sometimes I can’t think of anything to draw to help with the math. Maybe I need to open it up to my Ss. #xplap
A3. I was definitely inspired by @jedikermit’s Funko POP action figure templates - and my students love #Sketchnoting! This year we used @Wizards_DnD to inspire a character creation sketchnoting activity for The Scarlet Letter to deepen our understanding of the Puritans. #xplap
A3) In math, so much good “mathing” is in the picture and diagramming. I mean, some of the best thinking looks like a complete s!?t show on their boards, but notes are often the act of distilling and articulating that mess into cleaner, more organized sketches and tables. #xplap
Jordan Loughlin from Peace River Alberta Canada teach jr high social 7-9. Connect 4 shots was on my Xmas list, but couldn’t wait and picked it up #XPLAP
I used ISN's all the time in my science class. At first, I would grade them regularly, but then they became more of a resource for my kids. Letting them use them for CFU's and other class assignments encouraged them to keep up with them. #XPLAP

A3- I have always struggled with the demonstrating of this type of note taking because I am exceptionally bad at drawing 😐. However, I am hoping to try a sketch note for one of my Kansas history units next semester #xplap
A3 certain pages of their interactive science notebooks (ISNs) are for #sketchnotes, some are free note pages, some are for Cornell notes, so it is encouraged to take notes in various ways to learn the different strategies and their own modalities #xplap
I have dabbled... loved the #hivesummit vid by @HeckAwesome and different things I've listened too. But the style is not how I learned or really how I "see" things. So it is a comfort zone stretch for sure #xplap

A3 Ive been advocating for sketchnotes & have kids at all phases—I have some where it’s all pictures with just a few words & others who I can get to draw a small picture or icon with notes but that’s it—& that is 100% ok because I advocate “do what works for you” #XPLAP
As many have already mentioned, a lot of what I know about sketchnoting comes from @heckawesome. One thing she said in one of her presentations was about having students create their own glyphs or symbols to represent things. #xplap
It works well in science as well. Drawing is benefitial for all learners as they have to find something that represents the content - critical thining - and it allows others to share their knowledge in new ways. A win for ELL's! #XPLAP
Well, I missed most of the #XPLAP chat tonight, but I'm already intrigued by the interactive notebooks and foldables that I saw discussed. Time to do a deep dive into those.
Thanks @mrmatera and all the #xplap group for a good chat.... nice to get back in now and then. Enjoy the rest of the week.... off to listen to some Bing Crosby (Christmas music 24/7 around here) :)
I don't think there is anything wrong with sticking with your strengths, especially since you allow them to use it if they want to. We don't all have to teach the same way. Don't worry about it. #xplap

Thanks @mrmatera for another good week! Also loved the well played episode today! Love the idea of a board game club and always love hearing about new games. #xplap
hey #xplap, I'm wondering if anyone has ever used the game Keep talking and nobody explodes in a class setting (or for fun). I'd think it would be fun as a giving instructions type of activity, but wasn't sure as I'd never played it.
