Q1 For most, it is TRANSITION time of year. How do you prepare your pupils for their next steps?
https://t.co/IM9hebyo7J
Target vulnerable pupils and build in visits to their new school that help them grow in confidence by understanding systems.
Transition means more than just the journey from primary to secondary How do you prepare your pupils for their next year group?
In my opinion thoughts fall towards transition far too late and feels rushed after the exam season.
Try and help them get the best possible GCSE grades as this will open doors in the future
anyone else sick of getting emails from exam boards trying to persuade you to chose them for current yr10 new GCSEs?
How about those who are not as academically gifted?
Lots of teacher and TA talk across year groups and we have a transition unit to end and start year for every class.
Q1 For most, it is TRANSITION time of year. How do you prepare your pupils for their next steps?
Does this usually start in June, or a lot earlier in the school year?
https://t.co/7FyYN07owZ
Ensure that your curriculum is set up in a way that will still enable them to get the qualifications they need to move on
Surely pushing them out into the big world with a piece of paper, without knowing how to leverage it is a mistake.
So, a whole school approach? Do you get your feeder primaries involved with this?
Last two weeks of year and first two weeks of new year. We then have a school wide oracy unit (see blog)
The 'throughout' part is the key. Too often this is left to KS4.
I think most things come too late and rushed like we forgot there was anyone other than Yr 11/13.
A2 Football/sport/games tournament with mixed teams to encourage bonds to be made before September
a1 lots of talk about next stages, extra transition time for some who find change hard.
Chance for pupils to mix with other pupils from other classes or schools?
All feeder primary schools go away on a residential trip together in Y5 and again in Y6.
What can one do if one's transition 'partner' (either feeder or feedee) isn't pulling their weight with preparing for transition?
I was thinking classes, mixed teams. could do maker/STEM projects as well (I am not sporty)
Wow, that’s a great idea. Who funds it? #
Q2 Share some of your best/favourite transition activities for pupils?
Sporty not necessary, but love the STEM idea. Secondaries well placed to deliver quality activities for this
CEIAG a crucial element of transition. Supporting aspirations through real world experiences to sit alongside examinations key
Definitely. Make them do more and don't baby them. Primary schools make them do stuff - so should we! #
Funding could be an issue. In my experience parents mainly fund but perhaps PTA could raise money to support.

Enterprise is a key driver of transition. Check out teacher's, student's and business working together.
Midlands teacher-writers! Apply for our FREE Teachers 204 programme worth £1k before 26 May: https://t.co/6p6XiEQ2dU
go to them and find out the issues. Communication and reaching out key
Not easy during a session ;0) Can you sum up in 130 character?
Ration them: 'You're getting two more questions - is this a good one?' If they waste it, their problem
... and if the issue is attitude and 'we'll sort it in September' thinking? 😱
Yay, well done :-) In all seriousness, that sounds great
Hey folks, please remember the -> <- hashtag :-) Thank you
a2 project such as making a book with photos etc of next classrooms/staff.
Question 3 is really focusing on in-school transition. How is this managed at your school?
start with what's best for the pupils and work from there usually works. EQ of building relationships.
but also high quality challenging teaching. What they produce at primary is phenomenal
Q3 How do you work with colleagues preparing pupils for transition to a new class/school?
A really important resource at this time of year. Drug & alcohol education for Yr6 transition. https://t.co/ShRyV5dlkH
A2 to aid transition perhaps secondary teachers could visit primary to lead some lessons and vice versa? 🙂
We, as a profession, have been saying this for years, but why does it not happen?
That must take some planning?
Trying to find a magazine kind of layout that can used for GAfE and Chromebooks.
I suppose once the Year 11’s go?
It must all feel very quiet at that time of the year
I ran transition projects for an EAZ. Best practice was always great collaboration between secondary and feeder schools.
OK, let’s get back on topic with Question 4….
Q4 As an educator, what was your last transition professionally, and how did you deal with it?
https://t.co/IM9hebyo7J
running a shared primary and secondary CPD Teachmeet on transition so we can all get together and talk (https://t.co/FsmRGzlepn )
This is much mote important than sending books/work. https://t.co/B6tdJflYLk

new school, new job, new students. Lots of panic and lots of support but wouldn't change a thing now.
Indeed, scary, but sometimes it really can be for the better
Q2 Best transition project was cross phase/ cross curricular residential. We mixed up ages and got them building/making things
After GCSEs & students are no longer at school, those teacher could go to primary full time until end of term.
we used to have HS teachers visit to deliver literacy, geography & maths as part of transition
Some of our most exciting projects have engaged yr7 in planning what transition for yr6 should look like. They know best!
we have transition meetings with HS teachers and pass on transition notes, we've also done transition projects before
Excellent. Glad it worked out well for you :-)
Q4 As an educator, what was your last transition professionally, and how did you deal with it?
A1 Transition in schools is about Ss having skills & maturity for next year. Teamwork & ground rules activities help
It is a good idea but I have often find the GCSE/A-level teachers are not the teachers that teach Year 7. https://t.co/pWtSqpaI1h
After GCSEs & students are no longer at school, those teacher could go to primary full time until end of term.
transition projects started in P7 and finished off at the start of S1, pupils also had a wee research project to do over the hols
Can seem an after thought instead of a vital part of the education process
Q2. Hard for some secondary schools to set up transition projects if they have lots of feeder primary schools
Should transition be left only to Y6 and Y7 teachers? (Honest question - Pros/Cons?)
Whilst grades do open doors, often it's soft skills that matter more. &
Opportunities for teachers to work together are so valuable. You learn a great deal from collaboration.
YES! Some college students in September have a real 'spoon feed me' culture after GCSE.
Q5 An idea for SEN pupils is to have base in school where teachers come to them, recreating primary feel with safety & structure.
in 2014 we did a Commonwealth Games project - pupils had to follow progress of an athlete throught the summer 1/2
That's a great idea https://t.co/7OCIFEJm9K
Some of our most exciting projects have engaged yr7 in planning what transition for yr6 should look like. They know best!
2/2 it involved science, maths, language and geography - it was planned by primary & secondary teachers together
No, definitely not. But to aid transition the Ts teaching Chn should be meeting the Chn. Chn need to feel at ease.
Collaboration of any sort always good Helps with understanding challenges/opportunities.
another cluster does a materials transition project and another grow sunflowers over the holidays and then study them
Isn't bringing in 'agencies' diluting the transition from the two schools by adding an additional layer?
Great CPD yesterday the with team. Using Speed Dating to share a resource, approach, idea in 30 secs. https://t.co/eZZ0PekXd6
love hearing stories like this. Sounds great.
when we say fantastic we mean ' inspiring' and 'collaboration in practice . Impact coaches in action
Have your feeder schools work with the SENCO and bring them up for a number a taster days in smaller groups
Q5 How do you best prepare pupils with SEN for transition to a new class/school? Tips?
I really enjoy collaborative work with secondary teachers - always great to share ideas and create!
That can take up a lot of time?
Post SAT planning and team involvement is key. Trips/team teaching/confidence building.
Q6 Is it right that we should concentrate on transition so much? Should we just allow pupils to deal with it themselves?
Visiting a class wouldn't necessarily mean teaching. Value in observation & conversing with pupils too.
If you want to maintain student progress some form of support is vital
Not necessarily, but would be beneficial to understand where the children are coming from/going?
But what about the summer dip?
Q6 It is always important to focus on transition to bridge gap and ensure that progress continues.
Conversation more important than teaching. Building of rapport, building of confidence.
support is so vital for children who are nervous, vulnerable or at risk. They have questions that need to be answered.

I really enjoy collaborative work with secondary teachers - always great to share ideas... https://t.co/uDMTrPGmA0
But, isn’t life all about making transitions, and coping with them?
Your question requires refinement - it depends on each student's particular needs. Reads as if SEN homogenous
Conversation between professionals perhaps, but kids what to see they future teachers in action!
Would, hopefully, while teaching create an ease/engagement with future pupils.
But where do the families fit into this argument?
Conversation between professionals perhaps, but kids what to see their future teachers in action!
Thanks for hosting tonight, interesting as ever!
different fr every pupil, we do extended transitions for some, extra HS visits, meeting teachers and PSA's in advance
