  • KaganOnline - Moderator Feb 27 @ 8:05 PM EST
    #kaganchat Hi, Dana!
  • MyrissaDix Feb 27 @ 8:06 PM EST
Hi! I’m Myrissa, a Deputy Principal and part time trainer for @kaganaustralia #Kaganchat
  • jessica_reddout Feb 27 @ 8:07 PM EST
A1: rally coach has structured student practice, but it’s also helped students learn how they can help their peers in a constructive way #KaganChat
  • rickatkagan - Moderator Feb 27 @ 8:07 PM EST
A1 #Kaganchat I remember when my students' editing skills improved drastically w/ RallyCoach! Their internalization of standard conventions
  • fostermiracle Feb 27 @ 8:08 PM EST
A1: I tried RallyCoach first w/ printing instruction. I modeled and modeled coaching tips. And we practiced and practiced. One day, Ss were editing each other’s writing and I heard, “Remeber, start with c and turn it into d.” I knew the coaching had made a difference. #KaganChat
  • rickatkagan - Moderator Feb 27 @ 8:09 PM EST
#Kaganchat Hey, Myrissa! What time is it in Australia, or should I ask, "What day is it in Australia?"
  • jenAtKagan Feb 27 @ 8:10 PM EST
A1 Jen - Kagan trainer, currently working in KY this week #kaganchat
  • DayRene15 Feb 27 @ 8:10 PM EST
A1: I would definitely say that Rally Coach has helped my students become better helpers to others. They have learned to guide and not just tell the answer. #kaganchat
  • KaganOnline - Moderator Feb 27 @ 8:11 PM EST
#kaganchat Delighted to have your incredibly insightful comments here tonight, Myrissa! Can’t wait to hear your ideas!
  • kchambers21 Feb 27 @ 8:11 PM EST
    1st grade from Kentucky!!! #kaganchat
  • CanalesSciGal Feb 27 @ 8:11 PM EST
A1 Rally Coach helped me students to solidify their understanding of how to interpret a rock outcrop. #Kaganchat
  • KaganOnline - Moderator Feb 27 @ 8:12 PM EST
    #kaganchat Welcome, Kristen!
  • MyrissaDix Feb 27 @ 8:12 PM EST
Q1. I used RallyCoach with a Yr 7 class for ICT skills. At the end of the lesson one of the less confident boys said to me “I learnt so much today! Even better, I didn’t know how much I knew that I could teach to someone else!” His confidence & abilities cont to grow. #Kaganchat
  • kchambers21 Feb 27 @ 8:12 PM EST
A1: They learn to be leaders by helping guide others! They love the feeling of helping a classmate. #kaganchat

Hello Kristen! So good to see a fellow GC teacher on here! :) #kaganchat
    In reply to @kchambers21
  • CanalesSciGal Feb 27 @ 8:14 PM EST
A2 I factor in different skill abilities. For an odd number of students, I have A1 & A2 who function as a unit. #Kaganchat
  • rickatkagan - Moderator Feb 27 @ 8:14 PM EST
Love the hats in your profile pic, Coach Chambers! 😄 #Kaganchat
  • fostermiracle Feb 27 @ 8:15 PM EST
A2: RallyCoach partnerships usually are made based on academic skill, behavior, and personality. I try to have boy/girl partnerships. With triads, Ss rotate through the 3 with the 3rd partner’s job being to “agree because” or “disagree because” so everyone is engaged. #KaganChat
  • GCchambers95 Feb 27 @ 8:16 PM EST
A2: I try to pair students based on ability! If I have an uneven number, I have jumped in and used myself to even things up #kaganchat
  • DayRene15 Feb 27 @ 8:16 PM EST
Q2: I for sure look at personalities when pairing Ss. If there is an odd number, I like to jump in and make it even. It gives me a chance to guide students and then allows them to practice coaching, too. I try to pair up with Ss that might need extra support. #kaganchat
  • kelliekonrad Feb 27 @ 8:16 PM EST
Hi #Kaganchat. Kellie, 4th grade teacher in Park Hill near KC, MO

A3 A challenge is that some students get impatient and don’t want to follow through the steps. I stop, model and ask them to clean it up, reinforcing expectations. #KaganChat
  • kchambers21 Feb 27 @ 8:17 PM EST
Q2: Having an odd number was a hard concept to grasp at first, but gets easier every day! The S’s know now what to do in that case, so they have also learned and adjusted. #kaganchat
  • KaganOnline - Moderator Feb 27 @ 8:18 PM EST
#kaganchat Welcome, Kellie! We’re so glad you’re here!
  • jenAtKagan Feb 27 @ 8:18 PM EST
A2: I build in academic support by looking at abilities, etc. When here is an odd #, 1 solves, 1 coaches, & 1 praises... then switch. Students do 1 of every 3 problems. #kaganchat
    In reply to @KaganOnline
  • KaganOnline - Moderator Feb 27 @ 8:18 PM EST
Hi again, Kellie. Look forward to hearing your ideas! #KaganChat
    In reply to @kelliekonrad
  • jessica_reddout Feb 27 @ 8:18 PM EST
A2: I partner students through my academic data. If I have an odd number I will add in an additional praise role for that group #KaganChat
  • kaganaustralia Feb 27 @ 8:18 PM EST
Q1 RallyCoach is one of our favourite structures and it’s one that teachers always share stories about. They see such a huge impact on student achievement in their classes. This photo shows a perfect example of coaching taking place in a Yr 1 maths lesson. #Kaganchat
  • KaganOnline - Moderator Feb 27 @ 8:19 PM EST
Yes!!!! Model, model, model, and reinforce. #KaganChat

    Question 3 #KaganChat
  • CanalesSciGal Feb 27 @ 8:20 PM EST
A4 Social skills are important because they build a culture of mutual support and vulnerability (positive interdependence). “You rock!” and “”On point!” are some example praises. #KaganChat
  • KaganOnline - Moderator Feb 27 @ 8:20 PM EST

Oh yes, personality is key! I learned that the hard way... #1styearteacher #kaganchat
    • DayRene15 Feb 27 @ 8:16 PM EST

  • KaganOnline - Moderator Feb 27 @ 8:22 PM EST
Agreed. Can't focus solely on academics! #KaganChat
    In reply to @kchambers21
  • fostermiracle Feb 27 @ 8:22 PM EST
A3: The tips are always the trickiest. I try to anticipate miscues and generate a list of tips before coaching. As I listen to partnerships work, I notice new miscues that come up, pause the group to share, and add it to the list of coaching tips. #KaganChat
  • CanalesSciGal Feb 27 @ 8:22 PM EST
A5 You got this! Brilliant! #KaganChat
  • jenAtKagan Feb 27 @ 8:22 PM EST
A3: talking out loud BEFORE writing anything down can be a struggle. To help with this, I have the coach hold the pencil until they agree (coach if needed) and then pass the pencil for the OK, so then the solutions gets recorded #kaganchat
    In reply to @KaganOnline
  • jessica_reddout Feb 27 @ 8:22 PM EST
A3: the biggest challenge I have encountered has been ensuring students are following the steps to the structure instead of just answering their set of questions #KaganChat
  • kelliekonrad Feb 27 @ 8:23 PM EST
A2) CB & Tb pay off, as Ss willing 2 work w/ anyone & r flexible.Partner might need 2 change but can rely on structure 2 b same #Kaganchat
  • jessica_reddout Feb 27 @ 8:23 PM EST
A3: I remedy this by having a visual set of directions. I also verbally break down he steps while I model the structure #KaganChat
  • rickatkagan - Moderator Feb 27 @ 8:23 PM EST
A3 #Kaganchat Learning how to coach (Tip, tip, teach, try again) instead of just telling answers can sometimes take a while. Brainstorming specific coaching tips and posting those on anchor charts can help a lot!
  • CanalesSciGal Feb 27 @ 8:23 PM EST
A6 Students love Rally Coach because it is student centered practice and a chance to clear misconceptions and identify errors. It also forces them to pay more attention. #KaganChat
  • DayRene15 Feb 27 @ 8:24 PM EST
A3: My biggest challenge is with those students who lose focus on their job as coaches. They will get distracted. To remedy this, I make sure and stop them, model, and then have them continue while I watch and give feedback. #kaganchat
  • bgriffinteach Feb 27 @ 8:24 PM EST
I am 20 shades of late. Brittany from SC. 8th ELA. I will catch up. #KaganChat

A 3) Ss giving high quality tips. Modeling and projecting gambits helps, along with video/pausing to share/celebrate good tips #Kaganchat
  • bgriffinteach Feb 27 @ 8:26 PM EST
A3: Sometimes the students will not communicate with each other or check each others' work. I review the steps with Ss, model, and verbally encourage individuals to talk to each other. #KaganChat
  • KaganOnline - Moderator Feb 27 @ 8:26 PM EST
Making sure students can see the steps (key words) is a GREAT idea!!! #KaganChat
    • jessica_reddout Feb 27 @ 8:23 PM EST
A3: I remedy this by having a visual set of directions. I also verbally break down he steps while I model the structure #KaganChat

  • KaganOnline - Moderator Feb 27 @ 8:28 PM EST
    Question 4 #KaganChat
  • bgriffinteach Feb 27 @ 8:28 PM EST
A2: I try to have a high/mid low and low/mid high together to help with coaching and learning. If there is a group of 3, I label their activity with who does what steps to help get them in a routine. #KaganChat
  • KaganOnline - Moderator Feb 27 @ 8:29 PM EST
We'll bet your students really benefit when you pause them in the moment to share those ideas! #KaganChat

Hey guys! Joining late. I’m in Wyoming today! #Kaganchat
  • GCchambers95 Feb 27 @ 8:29 PM EST
A4: I can tell students how great they are doing all day, but it just means more when it comes from a peer!! #kaganchat
  • kchambers21 Feb 27 @ 8:29 PM EST
Caught hubby on the Kagan Train tonight too #kaganchat @GCchambers95
  • fostermiracle Feb 27 @ 8:30 PM EST
A4: RallyCoach is such a great place to practice praises because of the back and forth practice. Ss learn to appreciate other’s hard work and empathize with struggles. My favorite praise I hear is, “You kept trying!” #KaganChat
  • bgriffinteach Feb 27 @ 8:30 PM EST
A4: It is important for Ss to praise as well as coach in Rally Coach so that they can improve social skills and encourage each other when they get something right. We all need a little praise now and then to let us know we are on the right track. #KaganChat
  • KaganOnline - Moderator Feb 27 @ 8:30 PM EST

  • rickatkagan - Moderator Feb 27 @ 8:31 PM EST
A4 #Kaganchat I find that specific praise tends to be best! "You did a good job at ______ because . . ."
  • MrCoachEli Feb 27 @ 8:31 PM EST
Ahhh! Crazy day, joining late. I’m Eli from Albuquerque #kaganchat
  • MyrissaDix Feb 27 @ 8:32 PM EST
A4 Using social skills such as praising is so important to boost confidence and build trust between partners. When they get all the feel goods it boosts the power of the structure. #KaganChat
  • PaulDScaletta Feb 27 @ 8:32 PM EST
A4 Praise reinforces better than grades or tests ever will. It’s the ultimate feedback. #KaganChat
  • kelliekonrad Feb 27 @ 8:32 PM EST
A4) Ss learn patience, perspective, how to provide feedback in a positive light, comfort that others need help too, on and on... #Kaganchat
  • KaganOnline - Moderator Feb 27 @ 8:32 PM EST
    Welcome back Eli! #KaganChat
    In reply to @MrCoachEli
  • JackieAtKagan Feb 27 @ 8:32 PM EST
A4: praises that link back to the content are the best! Teaching students to do specific praise can help them focus more on the task. #kaganchat
  • MrCoachEli Feb 27 @ 8:33 PM EST
A4 There’s so much back and forth in Rally Coach so having the authentic relationships and having real social skills is vital to maximize opportunity. It’s a time of grit and something I’ve seen a lot when using the structure. #KaganChat
  • jessica_reddout Feb 27 @ 8:33 PM EST
A4: implanting praise and coaching during structures can help praise and coaching become authentic in other situations #KaganChat
  • KaganOnline - Moderator Feb 27 @ 8:33 PM EST
    Love this #GrowthMindset #KaganChat

#Kaganchat I'm SO glad you're all here, Eli, Jackie, & Kris! You'll add some more brilliant ideas, I'm sure! 😄
  • kchambers21 Feb 27 @ 8:33 PM EST
A4: It will help students learn to be friendly and help to stop bullying when they see others being so kind to their peers (whether it’s the right or wrong answer) #kaganchat
  • bgriffinteach Feb 27 @ 8:34 PM EST
I agree. It helps Ss know that it is totally acceptable to praise others and teaches them when it is appropriate. #KaganChat
    In reply to @jessica_reddout

  • DayRene15 Feb 27 @ 8:36 PM EST
A4: Praises keep you going and they build you up! We love fun praises that are original. I also like to hear them say BECAUSE! I love specific feedback! #kaganchat
  • KaganOnline - Moderator Feb 27 @ 8:36 PM EST
    Question 5 #KaganChat
  • KaganOnline - Moderator Feb 27 @ 8:37 PM EST
What a great way to promote a positive classroom environment where all students can feel safe! #KaganChat
    In reply to @kchambers21
  • fostermiracle Feb 27 @ 8:37 PM EST
A5: I see RallyCoach as a way to coach thinking rather than coach answers. I love when I hear students say, “Try a different way like...” #KaganChat
  • KaganOnline - Moderator Feb 27 @ 8:38 PM EST
Look forward to hearing all your ideas! #KaganChat
    In reply to @rickatkagan
  • bgriffinteach Feb 27 @ 8:38 PM EST
A5: Telling the answer doesn't teach someone how to solve the problem. It just teaches them that if they get it wrong, someone will tell them the answer. Gambits help Ss to share their ways to problem solve. #KaganChat
  • MyrissaDix Feb 27 @ 8:38 PM EST
A3. Some younger Ss forget the coach holds the pencil. I put a strip of patterned Duck tape at the top of their desk as the pencil place. The novelty of having a gummi bears spot for their pencil helps them remember. #kaganchat
  • JackieAtKagan Feb 27 @ 8:38 PM EST
A5 coaching gambits should be specific. I encourage teachers to use anchor charts. The coaching tips need to be linked back to instruction. #kaganchat
  • jessica_reddout Feb 27 @ 8:39 PM EST
A5: I start the year by telling students to start with a positive then coach to the answer. #KaganChat
  • nicki246 Feb 27 @ 8:39 PM EST
A5: "I really like how you worked that problem out, I wouldn't have done it that way!" This happened in my class this week during math! #ridersallin #kaganchat
  • MrCoachEli Feb 27 @ 8:40 PM EST
A5 Part of why I love Rally Coach so much is because of the coaching piece of it that allows s’s to have real conversations about what’s going on. “You’re onto something because...” “I like how you...” “have you thought about...” are some coaching gambits #KaganChat
  • bgriffinteach Feb 27 @ 8:40 PM EST
This is a good habit for students to get into when reflecting on their own work as well. #KaganChat
    In reply to @jessica_reddout
  • jenAtKagan Feb 27 @ 8:40 PM EST
    💜 this idea!!! #kaganchat
    In reply to @MyrissaDix
  • JackieAtKagan Feb 27 @ 8:41 PM EST
A5: coaching is always specific to the task. That is why it is important to generate a few coaching gambits before every structure were coaching is required. #kaganchat

  • efrerichs Feb 27 @ 8:41 PM EST
A5: "I do it like this, which is different from you because..." #KaganChat
  • bgriffinteach Feb 27 @ 8:42 PM EST
I like how you have them explain how their thinking is different. #KaganChat
    In reply to @efrerichs
  • charlie_hiemer Feb 27 @ 8:42 PM EST
I love to hear Ss in my math classes ask why after each step. It forces students to think about their processes and justify their reasoning #kaganchat
  • KaganOnline - Moderator Feb 27 @ 8:42 PM EST

A5 #kaganchat RallyCoach is some of the best, most authentic formative assessment possible (along with so many other Kagan structures!).

A5: I find that students tell their partner the answer when they don’t know what to say 4 coaching tips. Most likely, coaching tips you want Ss to give is what you would be saying anyway to coach a student. Just make them visible for students. #KaganChat
  • KaganOnline - Moderator Feb 27 @ 8:47 PM EST
Were loving all the wonderful ideas being shared today!!!!!!#KaganChat

    I forgot to use #KaganChat 😜
    • KristineAtKagan - Moderator Feb 27 @ 8:40 PM EST
A4: specific praise is always best. This is another reason why it’s so important for the solver to talk out loud. I recently heard a praise that was like, “I appreciate you showing me a strategy that I don’t know well.” I was also thinking in my mind...yet. 😁👊🏼
  • bgriffinteach Feb 27 @ 8:47 PM EST
A6: Ss like that they have the safety of only one person who will know if they get something wrong. #KaganChat
  • MrCoachEli Feb 27 @ 8:47 PM EST
A6 S’s love having choice/voice. Rally coach allows them to own their learning and share it. What’s not for them to love? As a principal, when T’s share their success w/ it for that reason makes a world of difference. #KaganChat
  • JackieAtKagan Feb 27 @ 8:47 PM EST
A6: I heard a student say they like Rallycoach because it helped to talk outloud and if they made a mistake they knew right away. #kaganchat
  • kelliekonrad Feb 27 @ 8:47 PM EST
A6) Hmmmmm...I know they enjoy it by watching, but going to lose that question to them tomorrow! I have MY guesses, but...#Kaganchat
  • charlie_hiemer Feb 27 @ 8:48 PM EST
A6: Ss started off loving being the smarter of the pair, but now as conversations evolve they are viewing problems from new angles and seeing the importance of being able to solve in more than one way #kaganchat
