Welcome to the February 2018 edition of #KaganChat! Today we will be talking about the structure Rally Coach.
Please be sure to use #KaganChat with each tweet and include A1, A2, etc. in your responses.
Let's start out by finding out where everyone is chatting from today!
A1: I tried RallyCoach first w/ printing instruction. I modeled and modeled coaching tips. And we practiced and practiced. One day, Ss were editing each other’s writing and I heard, “Remeber, start with c and turn it into d.” I knew the coaching had made a difference. #KaganChat
A1: I would definitely say that Rally Coach has helped my students become better helpers to others. They have learned to guide and not just tell the answer. #kaganchat
Q1. I used RallyCoach with a Yr 7 class for ICT skills. At the end of the lesson one of the less confident boys said to me “I learnt so much today! Even better, I didn’t know how much I knew that I could teach to someone else!” His confidence & abilities cont to grow. #Kaganchat
A2: RallyCoach partnerships usually are made based on academic skill, behavior, and personality. I try to have boy/girl partnerships. With triads, Ss rotate through the 3 with the 3rd partner’s job being to “agree because” or “disagree because” so everyone is engaged. #KaganChat
Q2: I for sure look at personalities when pairing Ss. If there is an odd number, I like to jump in and make it even. It gives me a chance to guide students and then allows them to practice coaching, too. I try to pair up with Ss that might need extra support. #kaganchat

A3 A challenge is that some students get impatient and don’t want to follow through the steps. I stop, model and ask them to clean it up, reinforcing expectations. #KaganChat
Q2: Having an odd number was a hard concept to grasp at first, but gets easier every day! The S’s know now what to do in that case, so they have also learned and adjusted. #kaganchat
A2: I build in academic support by looking at abilities, etc. When here is an odd #, 1 solves, 1 coaches, & 1 praises... then switch. Students do 1 of every 3 problems. #kaganchat
Q1 RallyCoach is one of our favourite structures and it’s one that teachers always share stories about. They see such a huge impact on student achievement in their classes. This photo shows a perfect example of coaching taking place in a Yr 1 maths lesson. #Kaganchat

A4 Social skills are important because they build a culture of mutual support and vulnerability (positive interdependence). “You rock!” and “”On point!” are some example praises. #KaganChat

A3: The tips are always the trickiest. I try to anticipate miscues and generate a list of tips before coaching. As I listen to partnerships work, I notice new miscues that come up, pause the group to share, and add it to the list of coaching tips. #KaganChat
A3: talking out loud BEFORE writing anything down can be a struggle. To help with this, I have the coach hold the pencil until they agree (coach if needed) and then pass the pencil for the OK, so then the solutions gets recorded #kaganchat
A3: the biggest challenge I have encountered has been ensuring students are following the steps to the structure instead of just answering their set of questions #KaganChat
A3 #Kaganchat Learning how to coach (Tip, tip, teach, try again) instead of just telling answers can sometimes take a while. Brainstorming specific coaching tips and posting those on anchor charts can help a lot!
A6 Students love Rally Coach because it is student centered practice and a chance to clear misconceptions and identify errors. It also forces them to pay more attention. #KaganChat
A3: My biggest challenge is with those students who lose focus on their job as coaches. They will get distracted. To remedy this, I make sure and stop them, model, and then have them continue while I watch and give feedback. #kaganchat
A3: Sometimes the students will not communicate with each other or check each others' work. I review the steps with Ss, model, and verbally encourage individuals to talk to each other. #KaganChat

A2: I try to have a high/mid low and low/mid high together to help with coaching and learning. If there is a group of 3, I label their activity with who does what steps to help get them in a routine. #KaganChat
A4: RallyCoach is such a great place to practice praises because of the back and forth practice. Ss learn to appreciate other’s hard work and empathize with struggles. My favorite praise I hear is, “You kept trying!” #KaganChat
A4: It is important for Ss to praise as well as coach in Rally Coach so that they can improve social skills and encourage each other when they get something right. We all need a little praise now and then to let us know we are on the right track. #KaganChat
A4 Using social skills such as praising is so important to boost confidence and build trust between partners. When they get all the feel goods it boosts the power of the structure. #KaganChat
A4 There’s so much back and forth in Rally Coach so having the authentic relationships and having real social skills is vital to maximize opportunity. It’s a time of grit and something I’ve seen a lot when using the structure. #KaganChat

A4: It will help students learn to be friendly and help to stop bullying when they see others being so kind to their peers (whether it’s the right or wrong answer) #kaganchat
A4: Praises keep you going and they build you up! We love fun praises that are original. I also like to hear them say BECAUSE! I love specific feedback! #kaganchat
A5: Telling the answer doesn't teach someone how to solve the problem. It just teaches them that if they get it wrong, someone will tell them the answer. Gambits help Ss to share their ways to problem solve. #KaganChat
A3. Some younger Ss forget the coach holds the pencil. I put a strip of patterned Duck tape at the top of their desk as the pencil place. The novelty of having a gummi bears spot for their pencil helps them remember. #kaganchat
A5: "I really like how you worked that problem out, I wouldn't have done it that way!" This happened in my class this week during math! #ridersallin#kaganchat
A5 Part of why I love Rally Coach so much is because of the coaching piece of it that allows s’s to have real conversations about what’s going on. “You’re onto something because...” “I like how you...” “have you thought about...” are some coaching gambits #KaganChat
A5: coaching is always specific to the task. That is why it is important to generate a few coaching gambits before every structure were coaching is required. #kaganchat
A5 WE REMEMBER
10% of what we read
20% of what we hear
30% of what we see
50% of what we see & hear 70% of what we discuss with others 80% of what we personally experience 95% or what we teach others
- Edgar Dale #Kaganchat
#InstantRelevance talks about that idea. Give students a problem with the answer and then have Ss come up with 3 different ways to solve it. #kaganchat#makeitreal
A5: I find that students tell their partner the answer when they don’t know what to say 4 coaching tips. Most likely, coaching tips you want Ss to give is what you would be saying anyway to coach a student. Just make them visible for students. #KaganChat
A4: specific praise is always best. This is another reason why it’s so important for the solver to talk out loud. I recently heard a praise that was like, “I appreciate you showing me a strategy that I don’t know well.” I was also thinking in my mind...yet. 😁👊🏼
A6 S’s love having choice/voice. Rally coach allows them to own their learning and share it. What’s not for them to love? As a principal, when T’s share their success w/ it for that reason makes a world of difference. #KaganChat
A6: Ss started off loving being the smarter of the pair, but now as conversations evolve they are viewing problems from new angles and seeing the importance of being able to solve in more than one way #kaganchat
A6: my students 💜 Rally Coach because it gives them an opportunity to interact and learn from each other without feeling inferior to their peers, and without feeling like they are going to be stuck with all the work #KaganChat
A6: just asked some students today.
One said, “My partner _______ helps me if I need it.”
Another response, “Look how hard these are! Would you want to do them on your own?” 🤣😂#KaganChat
Bonus #kaganchat My favorite moment of the Olympics was seeing Chloe Kim win the gold in the women’s snowboard halfpipe. And anytime @Lesdoggg Leslie Jones was providing commentary! Hysterical!!!
BQ: I enjoy learning about the athletes the most. #KaganChat
I’m sure I watched more NCAA basketball than Olympics though. I think I get more into the Summer Olympics.
