Our mission for our 21st century chat is to create a positive 21st century learning environment for our students by sharing resources and ideas that has worked in our classrooms. Join us every Sunday from 8:00-9:00 PM (EST) on Twitter using the hashtag #21stedchat. All are welcome!
Dave from MI. HS Science teacher. Working on my exams tonight and just finished watching Flash Gordon #oldschool#80s#movie#21stEdChat Here's hoping that @TweetDeck works tonight.
A1. Technology is ubiquitous and students are creating verse consuming knowledge. I model a lot of how to integrate technology in the Professional Learnings I conduct. #21stedchat
A1: I am currently learn to use and incorporate technology in the classroom. We have learned to use hyper docs, flip grid, and google trends. #21stedchat
A1: As a college student, I am currently learning how to incorporate technology into the classroom. We’ve learned how to use HyperDocs, Google Trends, FlipGrid, etc! #21stedchat
A1. Most of my class is online, hosted on Google Classroom. Communication, feedback, online, creation just about all online. I use a ton of @Flipgrid and @Seesaw as well. #21stedchat
A1: We are a 1:1 campus, and Ss do many of their assignments using Chromebooks. Our Ts have used everything from @Sphero to greenscreens for lessons #21stedchat
A1: Gathering lab data and lab report writing, using @Photoshop to analyze fingerprints, shoe prints, hair samples, recording demonstrations using @sway and more. We are 1:1 MacBook Air school #21stEdChat
A1: Technology can be used to create meaningful and relevant learning experiences. But important to remember that can be done without technology as well. #21stedchat
That's definitely an optimal way to use it. I think @alicekeeler said a worksheet done on a Chromebook is still a worksheet. We should endeavor to expand Ss horizons with tech, not limit their potential. #21stedchat
So true! Need to be more innovative than replacement level on technology. That being said, it's still okay sometimes! Sometimes the use of a "digital worksheet" here and there can make teacher more efficient in terms of eval formative assessment. #21stedchat

A2: Finding technology for your classroom based on your Ss needs. Knowing what will help each Ss individually based on prior knowledge, and making sure it benefits everyone, and makes the lesson fun. #21stedchat
A2: Spend a lot of time researching and playing around with different websites to see what will work best with what's already going on. Goal is to use tech to enhance. #21stedchat
A2. I like using the TIMS Matrix https://t.co/AlRt2lgQ6a as it has not only what the teacher should do but also students and examples of what this looks like in the classroom! #21stedchat
A2: My advice (to myself, actually) is, "What are we trying to do here? What is our purpose? What do we want to achieve?" instead of, "This is how we upload pdf in Google Drive." #21stedchat
The only reason I don't put my assessments in Google Classroom/Forms is that they can't import from test generators. Kids don't get confused. #21stedchat Would rather be 100% Google Classroom.

Valid point. I haven't thought of a formative assessment as a worksheet (generally the ones I use are short), but tech makes our classes versatile and open to a wide range of possibilities. #21stedchat

There are times when Google Forms is "replacement level" for worksheets, but can definitely help with teacher workflow when assessing. I like storing data digitally, so that there is a record. #21stedchat

A2 Chose my LMS based on what I felt was best way to organize content for ss. Everything else I use has been thru trial + error w/ my ss. Some tools work well some don't. #21stedchat
The content of the lesson usually dictates what tech I use in class. However, there is usually some aspect of each lesson that is posted on Canvas LMS for students to use - videos, slides, or exit ticket. #21stedchat
If I can't teach the "app" to students or teachers in less than an 1/2 hour it probably won't get used. Except are @Adobe products because they are so powerful. #21stedchat
A3. Incorporating Digital Learning Strategies in the Classroom https://t.co/dpJ6NlXug4 and if I need students or teachers attention for a minute to explain something I say 45 degrees and they put them at 45 so they don't shut off but they are not distracted either. #21stedchat
“Teachers need to integrate technology seamlessly into the curriculum instead of viewing it as an add-on, an afterthought, or an event.” via @HeidiHayesJacob#21stedchat
So true. I refuse to fight w/tech and I refuse to pay an arm and a leg! After @GoogleForEdu, I'm such an @Adobe geek. Glad to know there are others! #21stedchat

A3: @LanSchool to monitor screens I can't see, moving around and proximity to students in the classroom, and if it doesn't work you wing it or have a back up plan. I always test before using. #21stedchat
There are several teachers in my building that uses the 45 degree rule too. It definitely works and students are quickly able to get back to what ever they were doing on their Chromebooks. #21stedchat
A3: I think simply having them put the technology to the side or shutting it down so that we can discuss and make sure the conceptual understanding is taking place, and then bringing the technology back in. #21stedchat
Q3: If I need my Ss attention I will have signals in the classrooms have them either set their tech aside or put it on sleep so I can have their attention but their device is ready to go once I have said what I have needed. #21stedchat
A3. I've been trying to do this more in meetings myself. Helps me to focus on the speaker and be a better listener but still have access if I need to reference notes etc. #21stedchat
A3. Need to have a few back up plans in my back pocket. Need to be more prepared for when this does happen. I've been fortunate that we have only lost wifi once this year. That meant it was time for a little review trashketball! #21stedchat
A3: We should have have alternative assignments available when the "tech trips." And, just like w/ reg classroom management, the guidelines should be simple, posted, and applied equitably. #21stedchat
A3: When I first started integrating technology a few years ago, I had my small group table in the middle of the room and Ss desks around the exterior. Ss had to sit with screens facing me until we gained the level of trust needed for them to work elsewhere. #21stedchat
A3. best practices in today's world for tech is to not treat it like Ss will automatically use it for no good-- respect that it is the world they live in #21stedchat

Always sunny! 28C, though it's pretty breezy bec of the winter weather up north.
I've stopped teaching locally since 2008. I will be moving overseas again this/next month to teach in an IS with the family. #21stedchat
I think a good balance is always key to integrating technology in the classroom! Having on and off days is perfect so they’re not constantly on it but also not rarely seeing technology either! #21stedchat
A3: I like the 45 degree rule too and use it all the time. I also work in small groups in the beginning of the year to explain procedures and expectations for technology. #21stedchat
A3. if you expect bad, you will get it... Ss have to know that both you and they are using tech to learn, together... this will curb most issues #21stedchat
A4: I've found that tech is most transformative when its meaning is expanded. Different forms of tech are needed to solve/iterate/innovate, and Ss should be exposed to as many forms as possible. #21stedchat
A4: Technology should give Ss that extra step they need to gain a more conceptual understanding rather than just memorization. It should go hand in hand with curriculum and give Ss the hand on experience. #21stedchat
A4 using technology in school should prepare them for real world application. Students need to be makers and problem solvers. We need more of that. #21stedchat
A4: Tech enables us to hear from everyone -- not just from Ss who always shares. It also enables us to provide Ss with the necessary tools when the need arises. #21stedchat
A4 tech should be used for sharing and low students to decide what is the right tech for the task. We need students to be better evaluators of tools. That is true authentic learning #21stedchat
A4: Teaching with technology should create a classroom activity that would otherwise be impossible without the technology. If you can do the same thing without the device it’s not tech integrated. #21stedchat
A4 tech should be use to teach material but also teach students how they should learn in real life. In today world there is so much available Ss need to learn to be self starters. #21stedchat
A5: Most don't. They like that through Google Classroom, Schoology or PowerSchool they can monitor their student. Cuts down on PTC attendance. #21stedchat
A5: I would explain to them that it is helping to broaden their children’s learning abilities. That using technology is innovative helps connect kids to the real world in the classroom. #21stedchat
A5: I think the best example of showing use of technology to parents is with @Flipgrid. Having parent conferences and being able to show them their child’s video during a lesson is a game changer. #21stedchat
A5: If we, as Ts, able to document how our Ss use tech w/ purpose in the classroom (not just using tech for tech's sake), Ps are able to see the benefits. Sharing actively help open our classroom to them, & that there is nothing to hide. #21stedchat
A5. use the tech with the parents-- my Ss email their parents a link to their digital portfolio (Google Site)- I upload uses of tech to our school facebook (Green Screen, screen recordings) #21stedchat
A5: I think most parents like that they have access to resources at home that students are using at school. Also provides ways that parents can help at home. #21stedchat
A6. I love these books....Disruptive Classroom Technologies: A Framework for Innovation in Education https://t.co/ceVsRjNeIR and Courageous Edventures: Navigating Obstacles to Discover Classroom Innovation https://t.co/Sc89vuC8J2#21stedchat
A5: Involve them in the process. I have students share their ePortfolios and certain assignments with them. I also share syllabus pages from Canvas with them and provide explanations and videos. #21stedchat
A6. we also have #studentedcamps once a month, and this has been a great time to incorporate various types of tech. Ss also lead these from time to time #21stedchat
Don't forget to follow people you have met tonight during #21stedchat . Thanks for a great chat tonight @Edu_Thompson and I can't do it without you. Join us again next Sunday at 8 PM ET US.
A7: My takeaway is that I am already ready to take my teaching to the next level by using tech, as so many of you have validated what I was already thinking. Time for me to take risks & find out where tech is going to take me! #21stedchat
