A1: People don’t know what they don’t know. We have to inform them about our needs and how their policy ideas will impact our classrooms. Without that two-way communication, they guess and we suffer. #UTEdchat

A1: So they have credibility. If your legislator only knew you for complaining, they probably won’t want to engage with you. We have to build relationships so we can understand each other #utedchat

#UTEdchat I'm Whitney and I used to teach math at AFHS in ASD but am now getting points for relicensure
  • downrightdave - Moderator Jan 23 @ 11:07 PM EST
Too often I hear teachers share both amazing ideas and frustrations to those around them but never bringing them to those in charge. Without that information getting to the policymakers, positive change will never happen on a broad scale. #utedchat

A1: I have adopted a new phrase: “We can wring our hands or roll up our sleeves but we can’t do both.” It is important to roll up our sleeves and engage in essential conversations with policy makers so that we play a role in the decision making process. #utedchat

  • DeborahGatrell1 Jan 23 @ 11:08 PM EST
So true! We have to communicate with the right people if we want anything to change - otherwise we're just venting (whining?) and while that might take the edge off for a moment, it doesn't fix problems. Great point! #UTEdchat

  • KPete801 Jan 23 @ 11:10 PM EST
A1: I have seen Utah educators use their voices many times and change the course of legislation. As those who will administer programs and funding, your experience is vital to informing decision makers. #UTEdchat

Q1: Why is it important for educators to engage with policymakers? #UTEdchat [Remember to respond with A#]
  • DeborahGatrell1 Jan 23 @ 11:11 PM EST
A2: I’ve known my Representative, @RepEWeight, for a couple of years & she's a retired teacher. Last year I had to make a concerted effort to track down my state Senator in person at a town hall meeting. Then this summer I found them at West Fest and we chatted. #UTEdchat
  • DeborahGatrell1 Jan 23 @ 11:11 PM EST
A2 part 2: Because they know me now, I’ve been able to work with both of them on a couple of bills that will be considered this session. Relationships matter! #UTEdchat

  • mrsras4 Jan 23 @ 11:11 PM EST
A1: It is important for educators to engage with lawmakers because lawmakers make a lot of decisions that affect our jobs and we need to speak up to help those decisions be thoughtful! #utedchat
  • DeborahGatrell1 Jan 23 @ 11:12 PM EST
Thank you for sharing that insight! Often times I think we try to communicate our needs but the loop is rarely closed and we rarely hear back the impact we might actually be having. Kind of like It's a Wonderful Life. We don't know the impact we can have. #UTEdchat

I emailed every single one of the Alpine Board Members this evening and every single one has already responded back. I was very impressed, I had never tried contacting any of them before. It's not as hard or scary as it seemed for some reason. #utedchat

  • vb_kristin Jan 23 @ 11:12 PM EST
A1 We need to see things from others' perspectives, and legislators need to see things from ours. It's always good to see different sides of an issue. #utedchat
  • DeborahGatrell1 Jan 23 @ 11:13 PM EST
Hooray for interacting with School Boards! I was joined by two teacher friends for a Board Study session yesterday - it was great to be there in a group! Most public servants are doing it for the right reasons and will gladly interact. #UTEdchat

  • marcihouseman Jan 23 @ 11:13 PM EST
A2: I had some experience with policy makers when I lived in NC. Those experiences made me hungry for more. Now that I have my feet under me in Utah, I have gotten active in interacting with legislators—specifically advocating for education. Loving the conversations! #utedchat

Q2: What experience do you have interacting with Legislators or other policymakers? If none, what interactions are you hoping for? #UTEdchat
  • ajmerritt Jan 23 @ 11:14 PM EST
A1: I have worked with a few legislators to get support for #NBCTs here in Utah. I work with Senator @annmillner and Representative @RepCarolMoss to organize a Hill Day for @UNBC2 I probably need to try to share my story more with my locals of what I think is important #utedchat

A2 I had the opportunity to meet my legislator last year and have stayed connected on social media and even run into her at the grocery store. Makes it so much easier to have conversations about important things when casual relationships are in place. #utedchat

    In reply to @marcihouseman
  • vb_kristin Jan 23 @ 11:15 PM EST
A2 I've emailed my legislators and visited them during an educator day on the hill. I'm hoping to get brave enough to invite some to my classroom #utedchat
  • downrightdave - Moderator Jan 23 @ 11:15 PM EST
It's also really cool when you start to build those relationships and instead of having to go to your legislators they start approaching you. My experience has been overwhelmingly positive that they will listen and want to hear what you have to say. #utedchat

Thanks Deborah! I served on the NC Teacher of the Year team and on the NC Teaching Fellows Commission. Great experiences that broadened my perspective on education. #utedchat
    In reply to @DeborahGatrell1
  • Michell59555262 Jan 23 @ 11:16 PM EST
#UTEdchat I've always hoped for a group of legislators to spend a week or two in a random classroom to observe and assist the teacher in every way. Now that would be "insight."
  • DeborahGatrell1 Jan 23 @ 11:17 PM EST
Agreed. Communication should be a two-way street, and a continual process, not a "one and done" interaction. We've got to close the loop and follow up. #UTEdchat
    In reply to @covili, @rogers_machelle

Q3: How do you think Legislators can best support our work in classrooms? What are successful strategies you can use to engage with policymakers to advocate for your students? #UTEdchat
  • coachbpreece Jan 23 @ 11:18 PM EST
#utedchat A1: They are making the decisions. They need to know we are out here and the decisions they make will have consequences, good or bad.
    In reply to @DeborahGatrell1
  • DeborahGatrell1 Jan 23 @ 11:19 PM EST
A3: Legislators best support our work by funding high priority needs, but otherwise should defer to the @UTBoardofEd. It’s bad when the Legislature acts like a “Super Board” because then things can’t be adjusted unless they go back through the Legislative process. #UTEdchat
  • DeborahGatrell1 Jan 23 @ 11:19 PM EST
A3 part 2: Still, funding and some Legislative policies are critical and we need to share our classroom experiences to illustrate these needs. #UTEdchat
  • coachbpreece Jan 23 @ 11:19 PM EST
#utedchat A3: Ultimately funding has to increase to pay teachers more, reduce class sizes, restore benefits. If they could cut down on the policy garbage, that would be great too.
    In reply to @DeborahGatrell1
  • speechlady2018 Jan 23 @ 11:19 PM EST
ASHA (American Speech-Language and Hearing Association) does a fantastic job getting Therapists on board with contacting legislators for policy making and changes. They draft emails that we can edit and send. #utedchat

One is a bit controversial, dealing with firearm storage. I didn't reach that position easily, but found from all my reading and research that most weapons used in school shootings come from home. #UTEdchat

Go for it!! No doubt...they would love to see the magic that is happening in your classroom!! #utedchat

  • melissa06222193 Jan 23 @ 11:20 PM EST
I think if they give us the tools we need to teach it is helpful. I would really appreciate if they would reinstate mandatory attendance and enforce it with court. We have the hardest time getting some students to even go to school. #utedchat
    In reply to @DeborahGatrell1
  • ajmerritt Jan 23 @ 11:20 PM EST
A3: Come out and see what is happening in the schools. I think schools need to invite them to attend functions and to see what this or that legislation looks like in action in their school. I also think adding to the WPU is a huge help to our kids! #utedchat
    • DeborahGatrell1 Jan 23 @ 11:18 PM EST

The second isn't published yet, but will restructure financial support for teachers pursing @NBPTS #NBCTStrong certification to make it easier for teachers to afford work towards Board Certification-the best PD there is for building reflective & more effective teachers. #UTEdchat

  • vb_kristin Jan 23 @ 11:21 PM EST
A3 Just like in teaching, relationships are crucial. If I can build a connection with my legislator, he/she is more likely to listen when I have something I'd like to discuss.#utedchat
  • coachbpreece Jan 23 @ 11:22 PM EST
#utedchat A2: My experience has come from two places: as a teacher bringing my students to the capitol over the years and through Hope Street Group. I haven't changed policy per se but interactions have been positive.
    In reply to @DeborahGatrell1
  • DeborahGatrell1 Jan 23 @ 11:22 PM EST
I agree most policy should be handled at the State and local board levels. It's never good when the Legislature is a super board because then changes have to go back through the Legislative process, which takes a LONG time. #UTEdchat
    In reply to @coachbpreece
  • marcihouseman Jan 23 @ 11:22 PM EST
I am so grateful to you and others who carefully come to informed decisions by putting in the time and energy to fully understand an issue. I look forward to following that bill as well as your advocacy for it! #utedchat

A3: Part 2: I think by sharing our students stories as well. They need to know their communities they are representing and I think sharing these could be powerful. #utedchat
  • rogers_machelle Jan 23 @ 11:22 PM EST
A3 I think it is easier to advocate when there is experience and/or understanding. So, that support and advocacy comes when they visit classrooms, with teachers, and listen #utedchat

Honestly, I'd love to see a lot fewer education bills. I know a huge percentage of the budget goes to education, but if they can focus on funding and then leave as much as possible up to the USBE and most importantly the LEA, that would be spectacular. #utedchat

    In reply to @DeborahGatrell1

#utedchat Attendance is a big issue but unfortunately the state is all about parent choice on that issue rather than looking at educational outcomes and what could make teaching easier.

#UTEdchat I desire to know the best and most effective way to reach our state legislators. Is it email, phone call, twitter, snail mail? If you never get a chance to speak face-to-face with anyone, it seems tricky to have any beneficial dialogue.

Best way to communicate really depends on the Legislator. If you can figure out how to follow their availability, in person is best. I think they all have Legislative interns assisting them during session who will handle Social media (most have Twitter DURING session). #UTEdchat

We're all experts in different things. So while they may be 'smart,' they don't know what happens in YOUR classroom with YOUR students. That's where you're the expert and that matters! #UTEdchat

I came in late with some responses. Excited to read the questions and replies. I'm retired from teaching, so I know current classroom views are those most needed by policy-makers. #utedchat

Absolutely agree with this. It was really hard for me (and still is sometimes) to recognize that my experience had as much validity as their experience - I had to think of it as something where we could learn from each other. #utedchat

Thanks for joining us tonight @RepEWeight! How was the Town Hall meeting? Any tips for teachers who want to reach out to Legislators and aren't sure where to start? #UTEdchat

Exactly! I tell teachers this all the time. But I also tell them to not just complain, but have solutions or ideas to help in place #utedchat

Our paras need more training and better wages. They do so much to support us and our students. Their hard work gets overlooked. #utedchat

A7 Wow. This is loaded. Students need more. I have written and rewritten this answer several times, so I will just say they need more- I have stories of all sorts to illustrate this- and so do you. #utedchat

Q7: As we come to a close, what are some final thoughts about your students’ needs you’d like to share with legislators? #UTEdchat
  • ajmerritt Jan 23 @ 11:57 PM EST
A7: Part 2 teachers need more support for this as well. They have so much they are tracking in a day. Extra support and guidance staff would be so beneficial to our kids and teachers #utedchat

A7: Ask each and every lawmaker to describe the ideal classroom/school for their very own children with regard to access to technology, how many students in a class, how much personalized attention they would like for their own kids, etc..... Make it personal for them! #UTEdchat

It shouldn’t be a gamble. Every student in every classroom in every school deserves a highly effective teacher. It will take an ecosystem in education to make this happen! #utedchat
    • DeborahGatrell1 Jan 23 @ 11:51 PM EST
A7: Students are more diverse and come with more needs now than 20-30 years ago. I want to meet all their needs, but in large classes it becomes impossible. We need smaller classes or more para support and high quality, trained teachers in EVERY classroom. #UTEdchat

Take Action: Craft a message to your Legislator tonight. Send an email or Tweet at them. Their time is limited during the Legislative session, which starts Monday. #UTEdchat

Well said. Its helps a lot when you say "I live in _____ and you are my representative/senator". Many of them have websites and email listservs you can join to see how and why the are vote how they are Look for those and sign up so you can be informed when you reach out #utedchat

All teachers have stories to share! I hope more of us will find our voice (and our sharpened pens) and TELL the stories that need to be heard, especially for the voiceless. Which so many of our students feel they are. #UTEdchat

Happy #DaveWeek to my #utedchat family. These chats are the perfect thing I need to recharge each week. People ask where I get my ideas and it's always from you! When we run into each other all over the state it's like a reunion, but one that you want to go to. Love you all!

Thanks for joining us for #UTEdchat! I hope you have some great ideas you can use to communicate student and school needs to policy makers. Don’t forget, although the Legislature handles funding, most policy is decided at the board level.
