The #michED chat is a grassroots effort dedicated to giving teachers, students, and parents across Michigan a bigger voice in the conversation about education in our state. We welcome all voices through a variety of projects, media, and social networking. We’re trying to address educational issues through apolitical conversation, spreading ideas and stories of success from Michigan classrooms across the state, and helping teachers and students regain the courage to connect and demonstrate that schools in Michigan are creating amazing opportunities for learning. We want the face and voice of education in Michigan to be a mural of shared experiences and positive examples of connected learning.
Good evening #MichED! Welcome to the Pursuit of Happiness chat. As this is our last chat before Thanksgiving, let's introduce ourselves and include something/someone we are thankful for.
Rachelle reporting in from St. Clair. Asst. Supt @mylsps. Love spending my days (and some evenings!) hanging in the Shores. Thankful for the great team I have to work with, from admin to teachers. It's always about the students. #MichED
For those of you who can't join the conversation during chat time, feel free to respond whenever you catch up with the stream! Power of social media, the conversation does't have to be synchronous. #MichED
Q1: Research shows that "letting go", not sweating the small stuff, is an important behavior in choosing happiness. What do you need to "let go" of in order to focus on what is important to you? #MichED
A1: I need to let go of the need to make people "happy" in my role. I've made tremendous strides in the last few years. Now leading a department of others and I recognize the importance of letting that go. #michED
I need to let go of "caring about everything". I tend to spread myself too thin and sign up for too many things (or get signed up for them). After reading this book, it helped a lot to let go. https://t.co/Yq8rbps2jw (title sounds bad, but it's so so good!) #miched

Hi everyone! I’m Elisha. 😀 Mom of 2 boys, wife to my college sweetheart. Former elementary school administrator, now ed tech consultant. Happy to join in this chat! #michED
A1: I constantly have to remind myself to “let go” of the idea being a perfectionist. Letting go of situations I can’t control, giving everything my all, & working hard. My daily motto is - do your best & forget the rest. Have to remind myself daily! #michED

My connection to #miched friends, my PLN from all over the world, @MACUL people, and I'm starting to make deeper connections within my new school too. Being a traveling teacher between buildings has proven to be hard!
A2: A couple of years ago I started to break down the barrier I put in place between myself and colleagues; really got to know them on a much more personal level. It helped a TON being in an isolating position at work. #michED
Q2: I feel so blessed by the relationships I have with my son, mom and dad, sister. I also have a "besties crew" from high school. They have been friends since elementary! Keep me honest and support me at the same time. #MichEd
Hi #miched. Craig from Holland / Kent ISD. A2: I keep close personal relationships w/ the woods, nearby streams, family, and trusted friends. This keeps me grounded (mostly) and connected.
Q3: Volunteering gives you a sense of purpose and can improve your mood. What volunteer work do you do? If you are not yet volunteering, what would interest you? #MichED
A2: Running & exercise keep me grounded, calm, & patient with everything else that life throws at me. Also, I am lucky to have strong relationships with my family and a core group of friends that I lovingly lean on as a my tribe! So important as a mom and an educator! #michED
Q3: I haven't volunteered as much in the past couple of years. I feel like much of what could be "volunteer" is also job related. But, I do volunteer on #MichED chat, planning behind the scenes. #MichEd
A3 love volunteering at my kids school. I am blessed with flexibility in my job so I love being able to help as some parents cannot and we all know schools can use us! #michED
For those of you following and participating in the chat, this is the article the questions are coming from. Great research from Harvard . https://t.co/nCsLBIuFOC#MichED
I volunteer for projects all the time. Whether they be projects at work that will push students to do more or getting out in the community to #GOTV. I'm super pumped to push for positive change. #miched

Alright #miched friends, I need to get the little one in bed. It was so great to chat with you tonight! I wish you all the happiness in the world as you end this week. :)
Q4: While I was an active child, I have also always been a reader. I have never stopped that "activity". I do sometimes think I should take a tap class again. #glorydays#MichED
A3: I love volunteering in my sons classroom to help support the teacher and interact with the students, as well as my sons sports events. For the month of December, I focus on service and volunteering with my kiddos for our advent calendar activities. #MichED

A4: Sledding, skiing, and being filled with pure joy when it snows. One parent goal is to teach my children to PLAY when winter comes; embrace the season just as they would the rest of them. #miched
A4) Board games. This has been a lifelong hobby for me and an activity our family has always enjoyed. A few times a year I game with former students who are now friends. #miched
I sing! Choir, around the office, between meetings, in reference to life, I am always singing. No wizard that there is or was is ever gonna bring me down!
Part 2: do you want to build a snowman?

Q5: Travel and backpacking are my experiences. In the past four years I've travelled with my son to France and Spain as his senior year spring break trip, Belize, and Iceland. We have Italy planned for the spring. #MichED
A5: Paying off all debt, creating and sticking to a monthly budget and saving up for things has been our investment. And then using the $ to create family memories instead of on things. #Miched
Q6: Happiness and exercise feed each other in a continuous cycle. How do you incorporate exercise regularly in your routine? If you don't, how could you begin? #MichEd
A4: As a child, I always loved being outside in nature & enjoying the outdoors doing things such as bike riding, hiking, swimming, etc...and I’ve continued that with my family. #michED

A6: I walk the dog to my daughter's bus stop every morning, then take an extended tour around the neighborhood with him. Another walk at night helps calm me. #michED
I've been really bad about consistently showing uplately. #gilttrippingmyself But I really value yoga in my life. It's a great way to let go and start your day fresh. #miched
