Hi everyone! Bill from PA. Elem principal & excited to be back to chatting for the first time in about a month. As for World Cup, just rooting for some close games. Not a big soccer fan but appreciate good games. #makeitreal
A1: For me, it's the rarity of it. Soccer is obviously played all the time, but this event is huge worldwide, and isn't one you get to have every year. There's natural interest in that. #MakeItReal
So @TaraMartinEDU never paid any attention to American Football, until we did #SuperbowlSnaps! Now each year we snapchat the game and great questions. Maybe we should have #WorldCupSnaps or something to engage you in it! #MakeItReal
Hi Tracy. Middle School Principal of @Simmonsknights1 near Chicago. Not really a big soccer fan but I worked a souvenir booth 22 years ago when World Cup was in Chicago! Great fans #makeitreal
Q2: OH NO!!! #WorldCup 2018 is during the summer! What creative ways can you come up with to connect with past and future students using the World Cup as the common theme? #MakeItReal
A1) Chasity Gregory from KY. 7th grade math.
My favorite part of the World Cup? Patriotism to the different countries via social media. I don't "get" soccer.... #makeitreal
It's interesting to look at that, too. What is it that puts up a world cup wall in your town? And if the wall is there, would bringing this into your classes be pseudocontext, where it would be relevance somewhere else? #MakeItReal
Interesting, too. What similarities draw you into the NCAA that exist in World Cup? And how can those components be brought into our classrooms? #MakeItReal
A2: Keep Google Classroom or another LMS open over the summer. Learning doesn't have to stop on the last day. Learning can become more relevant during summer when all are out and about. #makeitreal
A2: I played soccer in grades 5-8 but haven’t ever watched a world cup? We can talk about the physics behind playing soccer and then collect data? HELP! #MakeItReal
Q2: OH NO!!! #WorldCup 2018 is during the summer! What creative ways can you come up with to connect with past and future students using the World Cup as the common theme? #MakeItReal
A1: I love how everyone is excited about the event. It is a showcase of teams around the world as well as the host country. Everyone becomes a soccer fan every 4 years.
#MakeItReal
Ooh! I bet you have a lot of people say "I don't 'get' math" too! I heard that tons of times. Now you're in their shoes...what would make it interesting for you! #MakeItReal
A2) Any sort of statistics questions, especially comparing soccer to my personal fave, football. My Ss seem to be increasingly involved with soccer and would love the conversation. #MakeItReal
Right! We had a foreign exchange S from Spain who LOVED soccer (futbol) and played it back home, but no one else shared that passion that I could tell. #MakeItReal
Ha! I tell them I need to come to their games and have them commentate and define the positions for me. They'd get a kick (HAHA) out of that. #makeitreal
A2: World Cup is a great opportunity to learn about the different countries participating and their cultures. It is also good to talk to the kids about dedication of the athletes and fans. #KeepItReal
even better. Go in blind and do the commentary with no knowledge at all...then see if they can translate what you said to what really happened #MakeItReal
A2: I like comparing Futbol to Football, and what is appealing about both for the different countries. There are lots of things you can bring in here. #MakeItReal
A2: I am hoping to incorporate the stats from games into my stats class next year, especially if Argentina, Germany or Brazil don’t advance
#MakeItReal

I taught AP stats for years. It's the hidden stats that make the best questions. Like asking to find any indicators that a favorite wouldn't advance. #MakeItReal
A3: We have many students with family in different countries. Great opportunity to skype or GHO with someone across an ocean or a border on a common sports theme #MakeItReal
A3: Have students do a jigsaw where they select a team and research their country and team and share it out with the class. They can also have a friendly competition to see whose team ultimately wins the cup. #MakeitReal
A3: Can do a @Flipgrid (YAY IT'S FREE NOW) to have Ss exchange what big sporting event or big cultural event is currently happening. Mine would be all into baseball, NASCAR, or NBA with a handful maybe into the World Cup. #MakeItReal
WE do a parallel bracket. Don't pick the teams...but compare the countries playing (exports, economy, population...) and choose winners based on that. Then see if it works! #MakeItReal
Then have them explain NASCAR or NBA to someone in a foreign country! Or use their world language class as a way to share their sport passion, using the fact that World cup is a passion for others as the catalyst #MakeItReal
A3: Our school is rather diverse so thinking maybe collecting data as an icebreaker to see which students were represented by which countries
#MakeitReal
#MakeItReal A3 We visited 10 countries this year with our Ss. Ts could use Google Tour Builder to create a research story about the nations in the #WorldCup2018.

It's from a presentation I went to at #KCM2018 in March.... If I remember, I'll scan in the docs and send over. It's basically a ton of graphs that are used to mislead readers/viewers. It's great. #MakeItReal#fakenews is a hot topic right now!
