What kind of lifelong scars do we inflict on youth when the adults who are there to protect them don’t force change in the wake of preventable tragedy? What kind of foundation do we lay when their world breaks and no one fixes it? 11/
Good morning, #nt2t! Dave, teacher educator and long-time tweeter checking in from NW Iowa. I love watching the insanity of the sledding events—bobsled, luge, skeleton…those people are crazy!
I’m great! Long time, no #nt2t! :-) I have some grad students I’m going to try to get to join in the fun in a couple weeks, so I figured I better get back in here myself. :-D

Chris from Bloomington, IN. Teach world history for private online HS. Will likely be more out than in this morning as we have family visiting. #nt2t#BookCampPD
Always a pleasure to be here! Wish I could get here more! 10pm Sat evening in Singapore is always tough, luckily I have a 4 day old baby at home haha #nt2t
A1: “Glisten but not gold” has a negative connotation to it. I feel like if I’m learning from them, or if I have some benefit from them, it’s worth following. #nt2t
Hi, Julie. You were close to 80, near 70 for us. Now we're forecast for a rain-snow-ice mix starting later this afternoon. It's amazing that we're not all sick. #NT2t
A1 I am always very wary of following anyone who had 1K+ followers unless they are talking about something very useful to me. They can be time sapping #nt2t
A1 When just starting out, it might be difficult to discern glitter from gold. It takes a while to find content that is worthy of your attention, or at a level that will help you grow. #nt2t
A1: no. Just because an account isn't gold doesn't mean that aren't connected to those that aren't. Besides, maybe they are still in the learning process. Everyone had to start somewhere #nt2t
A1: There are lots of ways different individuals (& organizations) use Twitter. If it adds value to your PLN in some way, I think it’s worth following. #nt2t

A1) I follow back all educators. I don’t know yet how amazing they are on Twitter. It’s an opportunity to grow. We can’t all start as good-medalists. #nt2t
A1: People often feel that because I have a lot of followers that I am@not available to chat and learn! That couldn’t be further from the truth - Twitter is my place to learn and grow #nodifferent#dontjudgeabookbyitscover#nt2t

A1 You might get new followers that glisten with a million of their own followers, but check them out. If they just broadcast and retweet and don't engage with people, their gold is really lead. Don't waste your time following back. #NT2t
The key, I think, is to see if what they have to say is useful. If you are learning, being equipped, being affirmed, being challenged…probably worth following! #nt2t
A1 I am always very wary of following anyone who had 1K+ followers unless they are talking about something very useful to me. They can be time sapping #nt2t
I sometimes feel a little wary of people with large followers althoughI know how hard it is to build a following. Nice to hear you have time for us little people lol #nt2t
It's a web client that you can use to create columns for different hashtags, lists, etc. that you follow on Twitter. Makes it super easy to participate in chats. #nt2t
The best part about edutwitter is that so many of the folks here are looking to share, to learn, to grow. Twitter is the medium that facilitates the connection, so we can have the conversation! #nt2t
Tweetdeck is an online application that lets you use Twitter in a more organized fashion. Here is what it looks like on my screen right now as I am using it. #NT2t
A1 When just starting out, it might be difficult to discern glitter from gold. It takes a while to find content that is worthy of your attention, or at a level that will help you grow. #nt2t
I find that some people don't tweet much but have plenty of active conversations. It might help to check out their replies section to see if they're worth a follow. #nt2t

A1: Who you follow is truly a personal choice. There are some more "popular" educators that I follow because what they post is of interest. There are others I do not or have unfollowed because they are more interested in number of followers. #NT2t
A2) Use it as an opportunity to teach and model digital citizenship. Demonstrate how you use it to learn—and build relationships. Use it as a showcase and conversation for families and the community. And let everyone have a little fun with it, too. #nt2t
Wisdom! Don’t be afraid to follow someone for a while…and if you find they aren’t adding value to your twitter-learning, unfollow with abandon! :-) #nt2t

Not putting people off but the more followers I get the more difficult it gets to answer everyone or check who is following you and follow them back. Sometimes I don't alway know who is following these days. #nt2t
Keeping it tight, have an outcome for the use of Twitter education. It's user-centered so exploration and generative learning should be built in to that outcome. Surveys and polls can assess! #nt2t
Good problem to have. The more you engage, the more people will want to engage with you. You’re not expected to follow everything from those you follow. #nt2t
A2: Twitter is a place to learn, share and grow. Everyone I work with to help develop a PLN, I encourage them to share the positive, and to change mindsets. Digital citizenship in real life #nt2t
A2) I share additional resources w/ Ss via a Twitter feed embedded in my course homepages in Canvas. Have a specific hashtag for each course & the feed pulls those tweets. #nt2t
A2: I think it's all about balance. At this time I'm not sure how I would use it in the classroom, but I think you definitely have to make sure the people you are connected with will be beneficial to your students and their learning. But it should still be fun #nt2t
The best part of Twitter is that we can always unfollow people who seem to overcrowd our feed. So I guess it's quite alright to follow someone and give them a chance. There are plenty of "popular" people I used to follow, but got tired of soon. #nt2t
A2: I’m currently teaching an online course for M.Ed. students, and we are experimenting with using Twitter for class discussions. The upside: our class conversations are semi-public, so others can follow along, and share their insights as well. #nt2t
A3 Understanding what twitter has to offer is the key to this gold mine. Sometimes it is just being brave enough to give it a go. Once you understand what it is all about you are digging out that gold :) #nt2t
One of the best things you can do Lauren, as an Instructional Coach, is to find out what makes your teachers tick...what is it that they need and want to improve upon. Focus on their needs to keep it personal. #NT2t
A2.2: The downside…well, not sure this is a downside, but for some, this is their first time using Twitter, and it can be a little off-putting for them. #nt2t
A2: I’m currently teaching an online course for M.Ed. students, and we are experimenting with using Twitter for class discussions. The upside: our class conversations are semi-public, so others can follow along, and share their insights as well. #nt2t
Yes I agree. I don’t worry about who is following me, I worry about who I am following and how learning can happen. 99% of my connections mean well and want to learn #nt2t
A2 Encourage students to use Twitter, but maintain oversight in the classroom. They can run into unsafe areas there just as easily when on their own at home. #NT2t
Yes I agree. It is too easy to be distracted by followers numbers and not interacting with them. Need to give time to engagement and not just sharing stuff. #nt2t
Nailed it! I always tell people my PLN is about connections, not about numbers - it is about the value we each get from each other and how we use it to make a difference and grow #NT2T
A3: I agree and disagree! It is a gold mine of knowledge and resources, but....if you aren't ready for it that's okay too. We all have a pattern of when Twitter really "clicked" for us, you will join in when you are ready. #NT2t
Yep! Helps keep us together and track the conversation—especially since the course is asynchronous. I’ve been very pleased with how it’s going so far! #nt2t
I worry that I have missed someone who follows me that I have not followed back. If someone was to say hello I might notice them more. There is not always time for this though #nt2t
A3) Admittedly I don’t get when people say they’re on here but they don’t share their handle and I can’t find them. There are benefits of lurking and just taking it in. I guess I prefer the interaction. #nt2t
A3: I think I’ve been on Twitter for 9 years now. It took me about 3 of those years to figure out how I could learn via Twitter. Looking back…I think that’s “sitting on the goldmine.” #nt2t
A3.2 Twitter offers resources. If I dont know the answer- some in the network does, something has been posted, perfect informal learning platform. #nt2t
I would hate anyone to think that this is all I do. It is getting a balance and sometimes it has to be original and not just shared don't you think? At the begining it is ok but it needs to change for you to grow and learn. #nt2t
A3: it’s whatever you want it to be. Be prepared to dig and you will get gold. Digging doesn’t mean sharing or being vocal. A lot of people ‘dig’ by being an observer at first #nt2t
I think it is like anything else....there is a path to really using Twitter and finding its' value. I let my account sit for a year before I really used it and then I was focused on #gardenchat. That is what got me hooked! #NT2t
You can check the convo at #DC508, if you’re interested. The course is ambitiously titled, “Teaching and Learning with Technology.” Right now we’re working out our personal philosophies of tech integration. Lots to read and think about—and they are sharing their ideas! #nt2t
I take time and focus mostly on my notifications - my aim is to never miss a beat and stay connected with everyone #NT2T like real life though, sometimes it’s hard
It can take a long time to understand how Twitter works. And being a silent observer is a great way to go about it. When we're finally ready to engage, we'll have so much to share. #nt2t
A4: I saw a stat once that said something like…
1% of Twitter users share original content...
9% retweet...
90% just read along with what others are tweeting (and tweet intermittently.)
Not sure there is a bad way to do it. Depends on what you’re goal is! #nt2t
A4: I think it's silver. Retweeting is pretty great, but I'm sure others also want to hear your own thoughts and options too. But at the same time retweeting and help connect you to more information #nt2t
A4: Some RTs are gold for me when the initial post resonates. Silver are ones that I can add additional thoughts/comments, and bronze may be just a resource that is shared. #NT2t
Yes! You’ll sometimes think they haven’t tweeted for months till you check that “Replies and tweets” column. For those who have Tweetbot, be sure you click on “Tweets” to see them all. #nt2t
I think a real mix is important. I share a lot here but it is how I learn, reflect and grow and would argue that I would hate people to think I share too much .... #NT2T
Mindsets. We're all busy. We all have students in trauma. So, I say, "What are you going to do differently?" Many of my teachers are exhausted and don't what to expend the mental energy necessary to put in more physical time... #nt2t
Engagement presents a way to learn by doing. We are socially learning about a topic that the people I am communicating with have mutual interest buy-in for. #nt2t
Agree! It took me a couple of years to really 'get' what it was all about. Some of that was time but being frightened to say something that others would think was foolish. Learning by your mistakes is a great way to learn. #nt2t
A4: I retweet a lot. If it’s something I found valuable, someone who follows me might find it valuable too. If not, they can scroll past…or unfollow if they get tired of it. (I’m not mad…) :-) #nt2t
When I look to see if I am going to follow someone, I look at the person't feed. If it is just RT then I don't follow. I am looking for more original content/thoughts than just RTs of people I already follow. #NT2t
True! Don’t get me wrong - I think my “educators” only statement was incorrect. I also love connecting with people who push my boundaries - in real life, @mrthomastran is that guy #nt2t
True. Anonymity always generates the sincerest conversations. It might generate some spam, but it'll surely get the genuine ones to speak up. That's crucial. #nt2t
Agreed. If there isn’t anything new being added the conversation, it might not be the most value for your learning. But RTing isn’t automatically a negative! #my2¢ #nt2t
A3 Yes, join in when you're ready. My post, Professional Wonder, shares my journey starting with line: Before July 2013, I was clueless about the wide world of connectivity afforded by Twitter and other social media platforms. See https://t.co/u6Tr82nA6n#nt2t
Definitely something to consider! But I think it comes back to what the individual user is hoping to get out of her/his Twitter experience. Not all are here for real conversation…some are here for consuming ideas of others. Neither is bad. Just different aims. #nt2t
Well, that is the goal. Luckily I have funds for monthly grade level PLCs. A book study started conversations that led to intrigue and now action! It takes time and teachers need to be convinced that it is worth their time. #nt2t
I think it's a rookie mistake everyone makes: expecting a courtesy follow-back. But we'll soon realise that we're here to learn and not everyone is looking to learn the same thing. We all have different needs and learning capacities. #nt2t

Agree with you, Jim. If someone I follow shares a link, I want to know what made them think it's worth my time. Saying it with a comment adds value to me as a reader. #nt2t
A5: Depends on what you are looking to learn about! :-) There are chats for practically anything you want to learn about. Some of my faves are
#mschat (middle school)
#sblchat (standards-based learning)
#iaedchat (Iowa educators)
#weirded (You won’t regret it)
#nt2t

A6 striking gold is being asked to present at a conference or write for a journal because of your twitter and blogging activities. Learning that you have something worth sharing was not possible before twitter. #nt2t
A4 Got to know when to RT. There are so many stellar comments out in Twitter chats. Sometimes just responding and having a sidebar is worth the stop. #nt2t
A6 striking gold is being asked to present at a conference or write for a journal because of your twitter and blogging activities. Learning that you have something worth sharing was not possible before twitter. #nt2t
A6: Striking gold is building connections, growing a PLN, learning what is important to me, my students and my colleagues and sharing my thoughts, feelings and posts to help others grow #nt2t
A6 Joining Twitter chats have struck the most gold for me. Follow those who engage with you on chats. Many will follow back, and you'll naturally grow engaging followers. Then add select ones on lists to help stay in touch with them. #NT2t
A6: striking gold for me is connecting to people who have fun, innovative ways to teach or gather info so I can use it in the classroom when I start teaching #nt2t
Newbies need the support of those who are not within their school district to toss around ideas. Great to start a #tribe indistrict too. #nt2t is for all who are ready to learn.
A6: What strikes gold for me is reading what is happening in ed around the world. It confirms for me that we are #BetterTogether when we listen, learn, and share with others globally. There is so much we can accomplish together! #NT2t
A6: I tweeted this a year or so ago in this very chat (and a friend turned it into a nice graphic for me…) :-) You can’t read everything you followers share. No one has the time! So commit to 5 minutes. Learn. Share. Grow! #nt2t
Checking in on weekly New Teachers to Twitter #nt2t chat. Ideas usable for others too. If you don't follow live, can use hashtag later to see what was shared..and engage with what interests you.
A5. #ATchat is a gold mine for #AssistiveTech information, resources, and insights from really smart people. Even if you don’t think you have students who need AT services, you need to learn from these people. #nt2t
Sorry #nt2t but daddy duty calls! Thanks for having me and thanks to @shyj and @stephwurking for leading what is always a powerful learning experience! Thank you to everyone at #nt2t tonight - you rock!
It's at 7:30 EST Fridays. It focuses on the classroom atmosphere. Not being a teacher, I don't get into it much because I don't have expertise to chime in, but for teachers it looks good. #NT2t
A5) If you're a social studies teacher, highly recommend #sschat (full disclosure, I'm one of the co-leaders) and #sstlap (social studies Teach Like a Pirate). #nt2t
I have learnt that many journals will accept submissions and some of it is just being brave enough to submit something. Try starting with #ukedchat or @edutopia and go from there. #nt2t

Basically how I feel when I participate in edutwitterchats. There’s always something new to learn, and always someone new to connect with and learn from. #nt2t
Great read! My hope is that as educators, we don't stay in an ed silo but that we reach out and learn from those in other fields as well. We have much more in common than meets the eye initially. #NT2t
