I’m Cindy Woody, Senior Innovation & Learning Consultant at True North Consulting Group. Our first computer was some huge clunker we bought on a payment plan at Sears! #EDpiper
Autumn Riley, English 1 & GT Specialist at Mansfield Lake Ridge HS... the first tech I had was my Clueless phone! It had a voice changed, headset, and phrases on it #asif#EDpiper
Q1: How can teachers use technology to create opportunities for their students to apply their learning in meaningful ways? Be sure to add #EDpiper to all comments & responses.
Barbara Page, third grade teacher @ @CastlemanCreek ! The first "tech tool" I ever had was a Gateway PC that was heavier than any TV i own today! #TXed#EDpiper#edleadership
Hey there! @dawsonshari5 Shari Dawson- Instructional Coordinator from @desotoengage here! So glad to be collaborating with you all! I remember having a walkman once upon a time! #EDpiper
A1: Ts can use technology to give Ss experiences that would otherwise be unavailable to them. Virtual field trips, contacting with other students from around the world, infinite information. The world at their fingertips! #TXed#edleadership#EDpiper
Elizabeth Humphrey from Maus MS in Frisco and the first tech I had was a PC Jr. All my elementary school teachers made me explain it to them. #MausMS#friscochats#edpiper
#EDpiper I view technology as a TOOL in which students can pry understanding of nature and its phenomenon. It provides opportunities to view complex phenomena through simulations, thus, providing enduring understanding. @HISD_NHECHS
A1: Using Tech in class can help Ts provide students with more “real world” opportunities ... in CTE they really use CAD not just drawing blueprints by hand #EDpiper
Q2: Do you think computer programs that place students on individualized pathways result in deep, personal learning? Be sure to inlcude #EDpiper on your comments.
Back in the Philippines; where I grew up and started my teaching career, technology was scarce and teachers have to be super creative to get the content across. Technology is an innovation that is here to stay and will just the course of education every second. #EDpiper
A2: I think it all depends on the program. If the entire program showing them the way, or is there interaction with others along the way. If no interaction, then no...just surface level learning. #edpiper
A2: Honestly, I’ve never seen deep thinking...I’ve seen compliance and time-fillers, and generally for a while engagement...Ss know that the tech isn’t giving feedback based on a relationship though so after a while the interest wears off #EDpiper
A2: Trick ques.- for the most part, I think it can result in some closing of ACADEMIC gaps, however, learning is not personal b/c of the lack of connection. TRUE learning takes place when there are relationships built and connections made to Ss lives. #TXed#edpiper#edleadership
#EDpiper I would like to think so however the program must meet non negotiable requirements such as checking for understanding and formative assessment that can loop back and justify students understanding. It should also promote high rigor in literacy @HISD_NHECHS
Jamie Shelby, Kinder teacher at Katherine Johnson Technology Magnet Academy in DeSoto TX.....I remember the dial tone sound followed by an awful 2 minutes of waiting to be connected to the web. Now we wait all of .2 seconds 😂😂 #EDpiper#yr1kjtma
A2: This is a hard one. When I taught, we used software that individualized instruction. I had to make sure I set goals with my kids and used the data to determine mastery. I don’t think any program should be used as a substitute for deep instruction. #EDpiper
A2: I don't think computer programs always are the best route for helping Ss. In order to really reach Ss you must have a relationship! #edpiper@desotoisdengage#yr1kjtma
A2: I think it depends on the program and the kid, but on a big scale... no. Whomp whomp. Technology doesn’t eliminate the need for the human element in education #EDpiper
A1: I try to use technology to start a conversation where my students must state and defend their thoughts while hearing others point of view. Sometimes it’s through a shared doc, flipgrid, etc. #edpiper
#EDpiper I view technology as a TOOL in which students can pry understanding of nature and its phenomenon. It provides opportunities to view complex phenomena through simulations, thus, providing enduring understanding. @HISD_NHECHS
Some programs build basic understanding like gizmo. I always believe that technology is a TOOL so the teacher must make sure that the use of it is purposeful and not just busy work. #EDpiper@HISD_NHECHS
#EDpiper I would like to think so however the program must meet non negotiable requirements such as checking for understanding and formative assessment that can loop back and justify students understanding. It should also promote high rigor in literacy @HISD_NHECHS
@dawsonshari5 technology is constantly & quickly evolving! We must always stretch our technological minds to produce successful tech saavy students. #yr1kjtma#EDpiper
A2: fundamental skill building to provide opportunity to explore deep learning but computer programs won’t ever provide deep personal learning. Making connections is the only way to accomplish that #edpiper
#EDpiper I would like to think so however the program must meet non negotiable requirements such as checking for understanding and formative assessment that can loop back and justify students understanding. It should also promote high rigor in literacy @HISD_NHECHS
There are some programs that can totally help our Ss. Anything that is of value takes an investment on the learner's part. So, it is highly dependent on the students level of engagement and interest in the program. I don't believe there is one program suited for all. #EDpiper
Q2: Do you think computer programs that place students on individualized pathways result in deep, personal learning? Be sure to inlcude #EDpiper on your comments.
#EDpiper Alignment is very important. In a physics classroom students can align their learning objectives to the task inside the classroom and if there is no congruency between technology, instruction and assessment then it will be frustrating for kids. @HISD_NHECHS
A3: Ts need to build those positive relationships with Ss before introducing something that might feel like a "glorified worksheet." It's a supplement to instruction, making sure there is a connection to it. Allowing Ss to take control of the learning #TXed#edpiper#edleadership
Who doesn’t love Oregon Trail?! When I first started teaching, my kids would beg to play a game called Spellevator. It was really fun. Probably looks pretty dreadful compared to today’s stuff. #EDpiper
A3: with the amount of resources available online, tech can be used to provide student with choices about how they want to interact and explore topics #edpiper
A3: 1. What is my learning outcome...does technology add to this learning outcome or detract from it. 2. Is the tool pushing my Ss toward the 4cs? 3. Is the tool appropriate/safe for Ss to use? #EDpiper
Q3: Don’t start with the tech... but also don’t treat the tech like sprinkles to add on at the end. Be intentional in your lesson design. #purpose#intention#standards#EDpiper
A3: For tech to have a positive impact on learning, Ss need to see how it will help them NOW and how it will help them LATER! Ss want to know the true value of what they are being taught! #edpiper#yr1kjtma@desotoisdengage

#EDpiper Use technology in a collaborative way. Although I havent tried yet; goose chase scavenger hunt will definitely engage students to be more social and have fun. @MsPersaudSci@HISD_NHECHS
A4: It gives Ss the opportunity to express themselves & learn in a way that they feel comfortable & work best with. Gives them a voice & connects them to others! #TXed#edleadership#edpiper
A4: I personally don’t think it’s tech that changes Ss from passive to engaged...I believe it’s relationships and relevance to learning...Ss need to understand why the learning matters to care #EDpiper
Yes! I love when Ss who are quiet and never make a peep produce an incredible audio/video piece that they are comfortable sharing with the class!! #edpiper#yr1kjtma@desotoisdengage
A4: Ss should be creators not consumers of knowledge... and share share share. It’s the collective that raises the stakes and inspires new heights - share and adjust. #EDpiper
I always say that the quietest people in the room are the loudest thinkers. With great integration of the digital tools in a well-designed lesson, we can hear them, too. #EDpiper

There’s so many ways to connect with kids and ALL of them deserve opportunity and choice to do that. Technology makes it easier for a teacher to open the gates of opportunity for student choice #edpiper

A5: I go back to an earlier response. Make it intentional, relatable, and real world. The more they can see how the curriculum presented relates to everyday life, the more successful they'll be. #edpiper
#edpiper Mrs. Muhammad CS/Coding Teacher KJTMA....A3: tailor technology with the Student’s strength as an output and/or making output relevant to their interest. #yr1kjtma#EDpiper
With a computer program I don’t think we can...honestly, I wouldn’t want to...there’s a place for the programs but I don’t want to see Ts dependent on them for deep learning. #EDpiper
A6: I am huge about showing digital citizenship & how your presence online is there forever, so we work on showing our PRIDE online! Also, how to build your own opinions while still seeing the other side of an issue/debate. #TXed#edleadership#edpiper
#EDpiper Rigor and Relevance must both be present in our lesson plans. If students will see the value of what they’re doing in the classroom, we will have buy in from them.
Certainly not going to be through a program. It has to be through teaching an making connections for the students. Then APPLYING what they know through tech. #edpiper
I agree. It’s so important for the students to have outlets for their thoughts to become actions or products, and digital tools can do just that. When they can pursue their interests, you can really tap into their potential. #EDpiper
A5: Model the resiliency that is 100% necessary in the 21st century when it comes to technology - show students your struggles as you learn new tech! And VALUE the time to TINKER with new technologies #EDpiper
Oh agreed. Or at least half of the tech available today. Or what sort of production todays students would have with old tech (that's always fun to try and think about). #edpiper

A5: Tech can assist in numerous ways to help Ss develop the 4Cs + 1R (Collaboration, Critical Thinking, Creativity, Communication and Reflection)...when integrated to reflect real world opportunities the tech is even more impactful. #EDpiper
A6: I am huge about showing digital citizenship & how your presence online is there forever, so we work on showing our PRIDE online! Also, how to build your own opinions while still seeing the other side of an issue/debate. #TXed#edleadership#edpiper
Q6: Tell about a time when you used a tech tool in class that you weren't a "pro" at & how it worked out. Did students rise to the occasion? Do you always have to be the expert when comes to tech? #EDpiper
A5: When Ss can actually see what they're learning may effect them in "real life" they are much more engaged. It all goes back to relationships. Know your Ss so you can integrate tech in a way that's meaningful to them. #edpiper#yr1kjtma@desotoisdengage
For sure @GooseChase is fantastic for PD and in service too. We suggested it as a strategy for the “campus tour” part of freshmen orientation for next year #edpiper

A6: I tried @seesaw for the first time last year as it related to my dissertation. Was very interesting to use. Students certainly taught me a thing or two about it along the way. #edpiper
Yes, yes! Super group of #EDpiper peeps tonight! @dawsonshari5 came up with great questions & @katiemartinedu launched us with a fantastic leadup article, too!
I think we could ask, "How do we use technology today to make our own lives better?" We need to teach and model for our Ss how to be productive citizens. Of course, we need to consider age and development first. #EDpiper
I LOVE digital citizenship and wish that we had more standards or a core class for the essentials! Bc there is often the “they already know” expectation ... Ss don’t always know!! #21century#edpiper
A6: I love it when the Ss become the teacher. I think it gives Ss pride in showing their knowledge and understanding. I love when my own kids teach me things. #EDpiper
A6: I’ve never been a pro with any of the tech tools I’ve used, and I’m ok with that...learning from others along the way is powerful and necessary in today’s ever changing world! #EDpiper
A6: I am working on Schoology for the 1st time this year- I'm NO EXPERT & my Ss have the hang of it & remind me to enable submissions, allow them to view results, align to the TEKS- the whole deal! Certainly makes for a good laugh all around #edpiper#TXed

A6: Ha! What about yesterday... I’m new to Ss on iPads, so trying to figure the best tactic to digitally annotate a pdf from @CanvasLMS was a new adventure. Ss had great workarounds... use the Notes app 🤷🏼♀️ #EDpiper

Best way to learn it is to go set up a game. It will show you how you can set the tasks and point values. The app tracks all entries for you! Such a fantastic fun tool. @GooseChase#edpiper

#EDpiper Im sure we can all relate that SS can teach us sometimes about technology. It became an inquiry lab when i told my kids figure out how to use PASCO and determine the different ways to describe motion graphically. Discovery learning works for both teacher and Ss.
I love your growth mindset. When teachers let go & use tools that they are still learning, it sets a great example for the students to do the same. #EDpiper
A6: I’ve never been a pro with any of the tech tools I’ve used, and I’m ok with that...learning from others along the way is powerful and necessary in today’s ever changing world! #EDpiper
My business management students just utilized tech to create a product from scratch that doesn't exist today and had to draw it/write about it. Next they'll make an actual prototype. #edpiper
Ohhhh I love doing electromagnetic spectrum using #phet colorado. Ohhhs and ahhhs were echoing in class when students see what happens to the color of an object upon shining another color of light #edpiper@HISD_NHECHS Success = fun learning!
Final thoughts...all things #HyperDocs are my #jam the @TsGiveTs community believes in sharing!!! It’s more than a pretty lesson; it’s a system based on the lesson cycle that integrates technology and allows for pretty packaging! I highly recommend the HyperDoc Handbook #EDpiper

Super true!!! ✅💯 #edpiper Technology is a great TOOL that will only be effective at a proper disposal of a reflective teacher! Have a great evening y’all! @HISD_NHECHS I had fun @woody_cindy Stay awesome!
It was fun! I looked forward to it all day! How did you know what I looked like on my way home from work??? #edpiper#yr1kjtma@desotoisdengage Honored to be involved! Have a great week peeps!
