So Q1 What are your 3 priorities to take forward after your visit to #ASEconf
Q2 What resources shared at #Aseconf will support you to do these #asechat
Good evening #ASEchat. As I was unable to get to what seems to have been a truly inspirational few days at #ASEconf I will be lurking tonight and looking forward to the summary.
Welcome to tonight’s #asechat For those of you that didn't attend #aseconf here is an opportunity to mine some of the ideas and resources gathered by participants
Wednesday - International Day - talk by Icelandic I SEE project on reforesting to absorb CO2 as an inquiry project for students. Contacted Kew, FSC and Woodland Trust to access tree data for UK #ASEChat
1) Keep in touch with new contacts and support their involvement in future ASE activity
2) Take ideas back to international committee on how to engage international members more e.g resources/support
3) Think more, in my work, about science and the sustainability goals
#asechat
Yesterday I was more tired and listless than I ever remember in my life - and I've had 2 children!!! #aseconf this year was just the very best #asechat
My to'do list from #aseconf; 1 - share BEST resources and approaches with dept. 2 - discuss Ofsted talk with my Head (wider than Sci). 3 - follow up connections made with colleagues inc. trying to write something up with @Grevster73's help! #ASEChat
So Q1 What are your 3 priorities to take forward after your visit to #ASEconf
Q2 What resources shared at #Aseconf will support you to do these #asechat
What are your sustainability goals Marc? Are they linked to the amount of paper and plastic waste generated at such events. @theASE really needs to be firmer on these problems #ASEChat
I had a great time at the #ASEConf my advice don't plan too much. Let people invite you into their sessions and ask others where they are going. The best bits were the unexpected discoveries. #asechat
Hi @ScienceDouglas will you be responding to the Ofsted consultation on their new Framework? with a science head on? What might be the unintended consequences be for science teachers? #asechat

1. Work on understanding more about the intangible benefits of ASE membership and engage more “non-active” members
2. Develop assessment practice
3. Gather together evidence-based science resources
#asechat

I certainly aim to. I have a whole school curriculum role as well so very interested in that coming out! My worry is the challenge in responding to a written document... how can we know effectiveness before it is used? #ASEChat
Q1 - 1)learn more about how others view 'curriculum' particularly in other countries 2)make more effort to keep in touch with people 3)increase my stamina!! #asechat
I think more about curriculum development and how the sustainability goals could affect curriculum content, and the balance between ‘pure science’ and human impact on the world. Part of this is considering how the sustainability goals translate into education aims #ASEchat
1. Incorporate the formative assessment probes from my new book into planning
2. Share what I learnt with colleagues - in my school & in schools across our Science for Life partnership
3. Write an article about Child Science Leadership Teams (CSLTs!) for Primary Science!
#ASEchat

#asechat Seeing @alomshaha and @theAliceRoberts use story as a brilliant teaching method for a one hour lesson made me think hard about learning theories
#asechat I still need to read through my notes and digest the day before I write about my main takeaways but I will definitely be using lots from @HelpfulScience and ideas from @ErChilvers too 😊

A sustainability curriculum is a massive design task - almost need to tear up what went before and start again for a high level curriculum? But as with all science aspects, a thorough understanding of science is needed to make sense of problems and their solution #ASEChat
1. Incorporate the formative assessment probes from my new book into planning
2. Share what I learnt with colleagues - in my school & in schools across our Science for Life partnership
3. Write an article about Child Science Leadership Teams (CSLTs!) for Primary Science!
#ASEchat
1. Continue to engage families to develop #ScienceCapital
2. Find out more about tinkering and set up a tinkerlab in school
3. Look for more ways to brink engineering into the Primary curriculum
#asechat
I think Marccis referring to the sustainable development goals (SDGs) also known as global goals. A lot of our materials link to this UN initiative https://t.co/2ADqntcLiM and more schools are linking their work to them #ASEChat

I’m going to work on attracting more trainees to next year’s conference at Reading. Work with ITE colleagues to make sure trainees are “allowed” to attend. #asechat
Don’ t wait too long before setting your goals, they’ll get overwhelmed by day to day jobs. Make sure you can collect some evidence for your CSciTeach #asechat

Interesting to hear how the Dutch team were developing their curriculum - the contrast between Netherlands and UK in terms of what has gone before and what each aims to do #ASEChat
As soon as I have finished the 'thing' I am currently doing(!!) determined to spend as much time as possible visiting sec school sci depts and introducing ASE to them - I would not be where I am now without ASE - I would have lost the plot years ago! #asechat
Unfortunately did not get to attend. I tweeted on Saturday to have live streaming would engage non-members and show the potential benefits of joining ASE. #ASEchat
Anyone wanting to make changes to their practice especially at departmental level or higher would do well to read this guidance report from the @EducEndowFoundn lots of excellent advice on implementation https://t.co/5rKZafCxev#ASEchat
Q1. For those of you that came for free to just visit the exhibition What did you take away? What was new? What did you order? What would you like to buy if your organisation has the funds? #ASEconf#asechat
We did it with P4 and P5 last year, got over 700 pupils taking part this year...That's a lot of engineers needed!
I'd love to see your resources though of that's ok
#asechat
Agree with others that #ASEConf was fab this year. So many great primary events for sharing too, i'm thinking Primary pop up and primary Teachmeet. We got lots of great feedback, including some on video which i am now sharing on twitter, FB, Instagram and plan to do a blog!
We do follow up with journal articles about the conference but if there are enormous cost implications to live streaming - we don't have any staffing to do this (and we don't want people to watch a blocky stream and having a poor experience!) #ASEChat
I quite liked the exhibition this year. Less large stands and (seemingly) more smaller stands so it felt busier/more to it than previous years. I also found a few who had stands for the first time which was nice to see. #asechat
Mine are: set up RAG feedback for Y11 mocks following @Grevster73 talk (encouraged me to actually get on and do it!) and try to build resilience amongst younger years to help independence #asechat
I was absolutely fascinated by this session-1 thing that struck me like a hammer was their statements began students should LEARN... ours are students should be TAUGHT to or TAUGHT about #asechat
Personally I’d like to thank everybody at @theASE for being so supportive of the work we’re doing at @UYSEG in the @BestEvSciTeach project. It was overwhelming to have the work so warmly received at #ASEconf. Thank you from the bottom of my heart! 💙 #ASEchat
Late to #ASEChat tonight but my priorities are to look at how we can improve (& standardise) feedback following assessments to help students think more about how they can do better rather than just correcting what they did wrong.
New data logging software for wireless devices. Several IT systems used for revision. Some examples of AR and VR. Good use of coding and microbits by at least two events I attended. And increased use of Sched used in organising the programme #ASEChat
but you need someone to organise it - the ASE has around the equivalent of 11 full time staff. We ran 500 timetabled sessions. I'd love to do a little streaming (not enough to affect ticket sales) but I barely had time to tweet let alone stream! :( #ASEchat
Means a lot to me - to see some of the York Science materials and Ideas which I was involved in briefly getting to see the light of day finally #asechat

You may want to contact @cornwallscied who will be attending @NSTA conferences again in March, and talk to @caroyce who is NSTA president this year, and a friend to us all on #ASEChat

Dammit//why is it just sooooo hard to remember such a simple thing as including a hashtag in a post? ? Maybe because i'm still exhausted from 4 days #ASEConf!!!#ASEChat

Here's a draft of a blog post I'm writing to help out some schools I'm working with who haven't run primary engineer before - there's a lot of info on the official website so I tried to distil the key points! https://t.co/ehzhRxyn6o#ASEchat
Two of my highlights. @ResearchInSch teachers talking about the innovative projects their students were doing in school. And the celebration of AfL #insidetheblackbox with @ASEChairChris, Paul Black and teachers. Both sessions full of genuine impact #asechat
For @NeedhamL56 and tonight's #asechat
My department were delighted with the revision question cards & A Level Biology exam workbooks today. And I gave our technician the @CLEAPSS mug. #browniepoints
Really pleased I decided to go to #ASEConf in the end. Great sessions from @ASEChairChris (et al), @Grevster73 & @theAliceRoberts, lovely to catch up with #ASEChat gang. And shout out to the steward who saved all the excess CGP resources from the recycling.

The best thing that I have observed/read etc are Best Evidence in Science Teaching resources. Other positves @dave2004b session and Nikki @chemDrK session. #ASEChat
Yes - from @Grevster73 and the session that @ASEChairChris hosted with Paul Black and their colleagues. Lots of positive reinforcement that what we are doing with feedback is OK, but great ideas about how it could be better. #asechat

This is so very very true - over the many (!) yrs I have been coming it is the friends I have made, the support I have had, the ideas that have been shared that have probably kept me on track in my sci ed pursuits most #asechat
And even the benefits of discussions at social events and walking across the campus should not be overlooked. Great to see you, and especially at @HelpfulScience session last thing on Saturday #ASEChat
I think you make a very valid point, sometimes we need confirmation that what we are doing is right, and that everyone else is in the same boat as you. Not all about finding new stuff #asechat

I would add to that the need for clarity over which of those curriculum ‘areas’ the class teacher does (and does not) have the greatest autonomy. Maybe that’s my talk for next year! #asechat
It's one of the great things about coming to conferences - during the sessions, you can talk to others who aren't in your bubble and hear from different perspectives. Almost always gives ideas of things that are easily applied. #asechat
#asechat#aseconf was so inspiring. Highlight for me was networking with so many people I've met briefly before, and developing further links. In addition, lots of lovely ideas to take into class and try and lots of great resources to share with my staff!
I think that some of the most valuable sessions allow people time to talk to other participants with a focused question - rather like #asechat, in fact!
If anyone wants a whistle stop summary of some of the primary science stuff see @HelpfulScience blog https://t.co/BAMsFzrEho I felt tired just reading it, no idea where you get your energy from #asechat
One thing I have learnt from attending ASE conferences is not to commit to attending every session you can. You need to to chat to people, mull over ideas and challenge your ideas. Did more of that this year and it was great #asechat
I think treating big and small providers more equally would be interesting. It’s not how big your stand is but what you do with it! Although that may mean big exhibitors putting less resource in or not attending? I quite like the tent (fond memories of battling wind!) #asechat
Aww - guys - this is making me suddenly really sad - such a fab conf and it might be a year before I see some of you again 😢 - thank you everyone for everything in case I forget to say it later #asechat
For us the joy of #ASEConf us reaching new teachers and seeing their delight when they discover what we have to offer, plus hearing back from teachers/trainers who already use and love them. It inspires us and reinforces our belief that we are doing something right! #ASEchat
The thing is not to be disappointed at what you potentially missed, (glass half empty) think about all the great stuff you packed in anyway (glass half full) #asechat
There are income, and cost implications as you can imagine, but a dream is to have the exhibition in the centre of the conference and to use the surrounding rooms for sessions. We would like a 'conference heart'. Watch out for 2022 #ASEChat
I did glimpse you at the station as we both fought to get on an overcrowded train. I thought about a Crocodile Dundee style conversation but it didn't seem very dignified #asechat
Have to say as well, @LittlestoryCo was great. Good books, a deserved winner of the ASE book award 2018 but also a fantastic person to chat to who is clearly dedicated to science education. (I hope she’s an ASE member!) #asechat
I've been on the programme the last three years! It was lovely to have a year off actually - just enjoy the conference for the networking and learning myself, rather than flitting around and sorting out sessions. #asechat
‘Busy’ I can do... ‘busier’ might just finish me off! ;) But seriously, thank you so much Richard. That means a lot! And it’s always a pleasure to do my bit to support #ASEconf.
#ASEchat
And for those who are keen to share it's important not to overdo it. I fronted/organised 5 sessions (not as a presenter) but that was time I couldn't go to sessions I wanted to etc #ASEchat
I have found that I have enjoyed and got lots more benefit from the conference as I have been more involved with @the ASE. On Education group, committees and now with the Chair Trio. It pays to participate #asechat
The Brenda Keogh lecture was another highlight of the Primary Conference. Prof Louise Archer from @ASPIRES2science was inspirational and 3 great teachers (inc @MrChurchTweets ) talked about the brilliant #sciencecapital work they were doing in their schools #ASEchat

Purely by fluke, I found that lots of my sessions were linked by ‘sustainability’ and the message from @theAliceRoberts was the same! Science teachers can play such an important role here #asechat
Can people stop saying how wonderful @theAliceRoberts was... I was presenting at the same time as her and plenty of people voted with their feet on who was more interesting... (jealousy, pure jealousy I know!) #asechat

The response to #sciteachersos has been phenomenal. Lots of personal stories shared about teacher #wellbeing It’s been transformative for some #asechat
For things to improve for next time I still feel sometimes there is still too much on and/or no time to get from A to B. I know we want as many sessions as possible but the logistics to a delegate can be tricky! #asechat
Correct pacing for the conference only comes with experience - need to think, eat and drink as well as attend sessions, but each one in moderation #ASEChat
Yeah, I completely agree - it's easy to get overwhelmed, either with running your own sessions or trying to go to to many things. I think this year by only going to a few sessions, I came away with things that I will actually use, rather than just an overflowing brain. #asechat
I won't drop names but so many people mentioned @BestEvSciTeach to me - names that I respect who know far more about teaching and assessment than me. Praise indeed :) #ASEchat

Absolutely brilliant few days at first #ASEconf highlights definitely coming across @bestevsciteach and the curriculum series by the royal soc's #asechat

Worth checking this one out. The session was great, really made me think about the way we treat our planet. Some lovely short films to stimulate discussion #ASEchat
Some of the resources produced by @anturus that can be used with young people to stimulate discussion about habitat destruction and diversity https://t.co/gqWyTrQZaQ#ASEConf
Those two sessions were great. Please involve me in that group of physics/researchers looking at strategies. And your contribution to “What makes a great science department fab too”. #asechat
Longer term I’d like to revamp KS3 with @BestEvSciTeach but will need decision makers to be persuaded, so it’s great that even though I couldn’t make it to the session I can get the resources via @sched . Having that platform is a great strength of this year’s #ASEconf#ASEchat
Take a look at the @theASE good practice guidance on Environment & Sustainability https://t.co/SF3XmAXXoz Some references and ideas about what you can do #ASEconf
I already knew about your resources! For the third year running we will have all of Year 7 off timetable for a day to complete a @CRESTAwards Discovery with the Squashed Tomato Challenge! #ASEchat
WE have. Without @theASE 11-19 committee taking it forward, making it workable for ALL science teachers, it would have just been a passing idea. #wearethease#ASEchat
I did like how the buildings/room selections seemed to be themed though e.g all/most of Primary was in Arts (I think) #asechat Just tricky for me jumping between themes!
It does make the primary programme nice and compact, easy to get from place to place and you bump into primary people in between sessions too. #ASEchat
You can see your own sessions as a presenter in Sched with https://t.co/Fwa73jRLXS and then click manage - add presentation gets you to the upload page. Over a hundred had been uploaded as of yesterday evening! #ASEconf#ASEchat
And most importantly did @shaunreason manage to keep or get his own polar bear? He looked quite attached at one point during the Thursday reception! #asechat
We’ve used @AugmentifyIt cards to make an interactive display in the corridor. Students get their phones out and with the app look at the items in 3D and attempt the quiz! It would be great if the quizzes changed to keep students engaged....
Definitely built into the next few years KS3 reorganisation to press back against the '5 year GCSE' prep drift and fits snuggly into the big questions work by the RSC etc #Asechat
I'm like you Rose, need to process notes & set goals too. One thing I did take to school today though was a feeling that I do actually have an idea of what I'm doing with science (had been on a big downer) thanks to getting to catch up with so many awesome primary science ppl.
I totally agree - in my last school, for years I was a department of 1. Meeting people from @theASE was a great way to share ideas and reassure me I was heading in the right direction #ASEchat
So wish I had been able to meet you Rose and Liz - apologies - was on my to-do list but I seemed to need to be in a million places at once all the time! - Next year WE NEED A TIME TURNER @thease please take note!!! #asechat

My only frustration is how to capture impact from sessions. I hear occasional feedback and get feedback forms, but never know the sustainability of the inputs. #ASEChat
It was great to chat with you at #ASEConf this year Paul. Hope you have fun learning with our @AugmentifyIt AR cards! We look forward to your feedback! #ASEchat A : )
