Amanda James, #OklaWE elementary principal. Blessed to work with amazing ladies, MOSTLY blessed to be married to @James409Jason, sometimes blessed to see awesome sunrises at 6:00am… not a morning person…#OklaEd
A1 It means that someone has gone through a rigorous process of professional self-reflection and growth to become a National Board Certified Teacher. #oklaed
A1: I know what it means. And I think they worked really hard for those letters after their name. But I don’t think it makes them any better than anyone else. #Oklaed
A1 To me, #NBCT after someone's name means that they have put in the hard work of analyzing & reflecting on their teaching. It's not just theory. They are effective in their classrooms & their students benefit from their experience. #oklaed
A1) National Board Certified Teacher, I know about the process and that teachers who have gone through it have put in a lot of time and effort to be an excellent teacher #OklaEd
A1: It means they spent time becoming an awesome teacher! I'm not sure non-educators know what it means, but as someone going through the process, I'm impressed by them! #oklaed
Who cares? It didn’t pass! Democrats, republicans, it does not matter. We are Oklahomans and all legislators regardless of political affiliation should be ashamed. #oklaed#okleg
In reply to
@Bill_Shapard, @stevemcqueen777, @StepUpOklahoma
A1. It means that person is a bad ass to have completed the rigorous National Board Certified Program. Ask my friends @Biobellrocks and @mcappsparks#oklaed
A1 I think it’s cool that they’ve put in extra work. It seems like a rigorous process & not just letters (like some programs given out for 💰) so I’m willing to give respect. That said, I don’t give them more respect than any other educator I meet on here. #OklaEd
Are you driven to offer the best possible services for students? Can you help us lead the way on the road to success? (See what we did there?) Join our team as the Director of Transportation! #oklaed
There are teachers that simply can’t afford, or don’t have the time to become NBCT.. it doesn’t mean they can’t. #oklaed but good for those that are. It’s no easy task.
A1: I know what it means. And I think they worked really hard for those letters after their name. But I don’t think it makes them any better than anyone else. #Oklaed
Q1. Seeing someone with the NBCT after their name means that the individual has a commitment to excellence! As a teacher candidate, I have not heard a lot about NBCT. Perhaps the we can get the word out more. #oklaed
A1 When I see NBCT it indicates that a professional educator has planned, prepared, reflected, and invested considerable amounts of time to grow his or her professional toolkit and has received the NBCT designation because of their efforts #oklaed
I agree Kim, not necessarily better than anyone else, but it does give me insight instead of hiring blindly. References aren’t always truthful. #oklaed
A1: I know what it means. And I think they worked really hard for those letters after their name. But I don’t think it makes them any better than anyone else. #Oklaed
A1 I think it means this teacher has been willing to invest time and work to increase his/her expertise in a subject area and is willing to demonstrate that to others. Others may not see it as such; however, that is shortsighted on their part. #oklaed
A1 - It is the most prestigious acronym that can follow your name. NBCT means that person is a master teacher! It means the students in that classroom will learn no matter what! #oklaed
A1: They worked hard to understand their craft and I applaud them for their hard work and dedication. It does not however mean they are a better instructor/teacher then someone who doesn't. #OklaEd#respectfully
A1. I include those letters bc I’m a proud, professional, reflective, practitioner. In some ways they represent the journey I take w my Ss to learn from each other. I have been wondering if I can include Ph.D-NBCT bc it means just as much as all other accomplishments. #OKLAED
This week the Oklahoma House will once again vote to cut funding for Oklahoma Schools. They will also continue to hear tax credit scholarships for individuals and corporations that redirects tax revenue from the state to private schools. #GetTheFacts#OklaEd
A2) Honestly I am ignorant of the NBCT process. Maybe this is something that should be mentioned in the universities and/or mentor teacher program (which doesn’t exist most places). #Oklaed
A2: It is way more personal and reflective than any other process I know of. It's intense and requires you to consider the WHY and HOW of teaching - and then prove it. #oklaed
A2: I was hoping for that question. I have Ed.D, does that make be a better leader or educator. No, not necessarily. It says I have a commitment to my own learning and professional growth. A growth mindset and spirit of excellence.#OklaEd
A2: I do not know anything about the process of becoming NBCT, but from what I have seen, everyone that has gone through it and have the designation next to their name are LIT! #oklaed
A2. The intensity of the process sets NBCT apart from other professional designations as well as the in depth reflective aspect about how my instruction impacts my students and their learning. #oklaed
Sorry to be late. Debbie from CachePS, DoDEA Grants Project Director; fmr ELA tchr & prin; lifelong educator regardless of title; do what’s best for kids @dodeagrants#oklaed
A2 unlike other processes that require increased knowledge in a particular area, NBCT fosters an increase in self-analyses and reflection. Can you recognize where you need to improve and what steps you can take #oklaed
A2) I’m interested to hear from those who have been through it. From what I know, it is very thorough and requires deep and honest reflection along with hard work to improve and to quailify. #oklaed
It would be good for those who are alt cert as well. I didn’t know what it was for a long time and usually only heard of it in the context of the stipend. #oklaed
A2 It seems like #NBCT is much more geared toward action research and improvement of personal teaching craft than educational theory, research article reading and seat time in college classes. Masters & Doctoral EDU degrees have value too, but generally a different focus #OklaEd
A2 - It's different than other designations because it's about deep reflection and deep analysis of what is happening in your classroom with your students each day. #oklaed
A2 - I do not know as much about the NBCT process as I would like so I do not feel qualified to answer. I am not to the 3 year mark and possibly starting grad school this year, but I would love to go through the process someday. #oklaed
a1 When I think of NBCT, I think of someone who is reaching out to be the best they can be. We might not be "the best," but we're working at being better. #oklaed
A2: For me NBCT was much more challenging and reflective than my masters program. It made me really look at my teaching and how it impacted my Ss learning #oklaed
You have to teach for 3yrs first & unfortunately, many new teachers don’t make it that long... so I would only attempt it when one feels really dedicated to profession & is seeking a way to grow/ challenge themselves. I did my MEd first and that provided great background. #OKLAED
This is my 3rd year of pursuing #NBCT and I am starting a grad program with 9 hours in. So far, grad so is WAY easier. Important, but so much easier. #oklaed
It certainly can be. I was able to complete my initial certification in one year as well as my recertification. The first meant sacrificing every weekend from August through March (about 400 hours). The recert was about 100 hours. #oklaed
A2: I know NBCT’s and I know non NBCT’s and I can’t distinguish between the two mostly. There is greatness in both. Just two different paths. That’s all. #oklaed
A3 It's important to keep growing/moving. Out of the classroom (admin) can feel like a loss of contact with students. NBCT is a way up in leadership level, but not out. #oklaed
A3 anytime you reflect on and attempt to hone your craft it benefits you and your Ss. We should always be doing this, but the NBCT process takes it further than most of us ever could go on our own #oklaed
A3) One who is wanting to lead and successful would want that opportunity to continue to get better in anyway they can. “When you stop getting better, you stop being good.” #oklaed
A3 - For me going through the NBCT process has been about being the best I can be...I want to get better and better and this felt like the next step. It has made me question my choices more than anything else I have done. #oklaed
A3) Teachers need to keep learning with change. Change keeps veteran teachers unique instead of accepting to be stale. Students, teaching techniques, communities, curriculum change; why not prepare for the best swan song possible? #oklaed
A3: You don't have to be ineffective to want to be better. The whole process forces you to focus on your teaching and to find areas to improve - and put it in writing. It's tough and frustrating - and insightful and helpful #oklaed
Agreed. The letters reflect individual process and journeys of learning— and that is different for everyone. Would NBCT be the teacher equivalent of having varsity letters? Especially since one component is demonstrating leadership in the profession? 🤔 #OKLAED
A2: The NBCT process keeps changing, but when I got mine it meant I had a beginning date and an end date. It was hard as I am a procrastinator. #oklaed
A 3. The wonderful teachers I have known who have gone through NBCT did so to reflect on their practices and to showcase their abilities. They wanted to become one of the best in their craft. #oklaed
A3. If you promote life-long learning, this process allows you to "walk the walk." I continually hone my practice, learn from my students, and incorporate new ways to reach my kids in meaningful ways. NBCT taught me to be more reflective (thoughtful) of this. #oklaed
A3 - Because a teacher truly deserving of being identified as accomplished is a teacher that is always seeking to grow and improve. From what I know about the NBCT process, the self-reflection and growth is tremendous aspect of it. #oklaed
A3: as teachers it is always the goal to improve at what we do, to impact student learning and to support why we teach what we do, NBCT is a focused way of doing that #oklaed
Q4. LEARNED: What did you learn from the NBCT process—or what have you seen others learn from the NBCT process? Is this what you were expecting? #oklaed
A3: As long as its not a "#oneNdone this should be used as a spring board to revisit every lesson every year. NBCT can teach or show you how to be more self-reflective. #oklaed
A3: I expect my students to pass tests and certifications to prove what they know. I want to be an example and prove to them, the parents, and myself that I am an accomplished teacher and have the credentials to prove it! #oklaed
SORRY to be late!! I went through the process to hold myself up against the highest NATIONAL teaching standards in the nation. It was a challenge! #oklaed#NBCTStrong
Hmm. Good to know. My expertise on the #nbct process is limited so I am interested in observations like those from people who have completed it. Thanks. #oklaed
A3 -- If I wanted my students to take risks in their learning, I'd better be taking risks in front of them!! That was so important for me. #oklaed#NBCTStrong
A4: Currently in the process, I've learned to put limits between professional and personal lines, to reflect on what I teach and its effectiveness, and to change my teaching for the Ss I have right now - to stay on my toes! #oklaed
Q4. LEARNED: What did you learn from the NBCT process—or what have you seen others learn from the NBCT process? Is this what you were expecting? #oklaed
I've seen the frustration of the process, the self-doubt and insecurities that eventually turn into excitement and confidence in the classroom. #OklaEd
Q4. LEARNED: What did you learn from the NBCT process—or what have you seen others learn from the NBCT process? Is this what you were expecting? #oklaed
And you share all of that knowledge and reflection with teachers! You were an integral part of my #NBCT journey and I so admired you and your professionalism— so I wanted to be like you (and others) who had the NBCT distinction. #OKLAED
A2. Process was overwhelming at first-it's different now. I loved the connections I made with other teachers going through the process, especially with teachers at my own school. We became a cadre of fellows supporting and pushing each other to the next level. #oklaed
Q4. LEARNED: What did you learn from the NBCT process—or what have you seen others learn from the NBCT process? Is this what you were expecting? #oklaed
A4 I learned that I was better at some things than I thought, and that I had a lot of knowledge to share with other teachers…which was NOT what I expected. #oklaed
Q4. LEARNED: What did you learn from the NBCT process—or what have you seen others learn from the NBCT process? Is this what you were expecting? #oklaed
A3: I think we all travel a different path. Some want to have the letters, some want to learn more, some want the little bit of more pay, some want to but can’t make the investment right now. That’s why we can’t put some above others. Or you’re missing out on someone. #oklaed
A4. I tried it once like 10 years ago but way to early in my career. When I was reflecting on what I was submitting, I learned at that time I was not a confident teacher and needed more practice. I have come a long way since then. But I am grateful for the process. #oklaed
Q4. LEARNED: What did you learn from the NBCT process—or what have you seen others learn from the NBCT process? Is this what you were expecting? #oklaed
A4 -- I learned how to reflect about my teaching in the moment...to make adjustments in lessons in real time. I also expected MUCH more reflection from Ss. They became partners in assessment in my classroom. I see that over and over with candidates. #oklaed#NBCTStrong
A4) I have only heard from one NBCT teacher who told me that she went through the process for the money. She said simply, 'In this state you have to do all you can to make your teaching income more’ #Oklaed
Q4. LEARNED: What did you learn from the NBCT process—or what have you seen others learn from the NBCT process? Is this what you were expecting? #oklaed
A4 I thought I was a good teacher. I was wrong. I learned how to look closely at the what and why I was teaching what I was teaching. I learned that my students are more important than the content. I learned that my colleagues know more than I do! I learned to listen. #oklaed
Q4. LEARNED: What did you learn from the NBCT process—or what have you seen others learn from the NBCT process? Is this what you were expecting? #oklaed
Absolutey, I don’t care about the letters but need to evaluate whether it’s worth the commitment of time. Saying yes to pursuit of NBCT means I need to say no to other opportunities. #oklaed
A4) NBCT taught me to constantly reflect and look for ways to improve. My mentor taught me what to focus on when watching my videos. Taught me to reflect from a variety of perspectives. I grew tremendously. Very much worth the experience #oklaed
A4. I learned the most about my students. I always jokingly told them I was taking them home w me each weekend (in my teacher bag, of course). But NBCT provided me an opportunity to be more transparent w them about their learning/my teaching which shaped new approaches. #OKLAED
Q4. LEARNED: What did you learn from the NBCT process—or what have you seen others learn from the NBCT process? Is this what you were expecting? #oklaed
A4: I learned that no lesson is perfect, but by reflection we can improve each day! I learned that I can change the course of a student's life. #oklaed
Same here! Anyone who realizes Ss are more important than scores should try to become an NBCT! Although scores are likely to go up as the T becomes more effective! #oklaed
Absolutely! We can all make improvements. Anyone who forgets that we need to change and improve should probably leave the classroom (although not in Oklahoma right now, please...) #oklaed
A3: because accomplished teachers know that they are NEVER done growing! Boards puts a magnifying glass on your practices... it’s tough to look so closely at your flaws, but you come out a much better teacher on the other side! #oklaed#nbctstrong
#OklaEd Gotta get back on the road and say goodbye from the KFC in Blackwell 😀🍗🍗🍗
If you have not already, please get registered for @EdCampOKC on March 3rd & share this #edcamp learning opportunity with colleagues! I hope everyone has a great week!
#oklaed Since it took me two years, I learned a humbling lesson of failure. After starting again, I learned to focus on specific areas rather than generalities.
A4: Fortunately, I have been blessed to have @MrsSearcy112 as my English methods professor. From what I have observed, she is highly reflective and effective in her teaching. If this is one of the results of NBCT, then count me in! #oklaed
A5) As a future administrator, I hope to encourage my staff to pursue any and all professional goals, and if this is one of them I will do my part to help in any way I can. #OklaEd
A4. I learned to move my focus onto student learning and what we could learn together. Asking Ss to help me learn from them engages them in the learning process. #oklaed
A2) the process is very rigorous and requires a great deal of reflection. The teachers who are truly committed take this challenge. I think you have to pick the best program for you. #OklaEd
Ease dropping on your #OklaEd Twitter PD, and I believe this is a solid answer. All my degrees that put fancy letters on the end of my name collect dust in a box in my basement. Heck my K-12 Ss call me PK, and my college students call me Keith.
"Whoever oppresses the poor to increase his own wealth, or gives to the rich, will only come to poverty." -Proverbs 22:1
Do "Scholarship" Tax Credit Vouchers primarily benefit the wealthy or the poor? In #OklaEd you can make profit$ from your "donation". https://t.co/V2EIMiTNzL
Confession here. Most of what I learned I learned by reading ASCD, EdWeekly, associated research & through Twitter connections. Then comparing w/what I see in my Ss #oklaed
A4: Having first gone through NB in 1999 (as a teacher) & renewal (as an admin) in 2008, I can attest that my practices were forever influenced as a result of the intense self-reflection & redirection the process demanded. I often say it was the best PD I've ever had. = #oklaEd
Q4. LEARNED: What did you learn from the NBCT process—or what have you seen others learn from the NBCT process? Is this what you were expecting? #oklaed
A5: On year 2 of the new process, I've learned to deal with failure (re-doing the video component), to listen to what Ss aren't saying, to push myself in collaborating with others, and to reflect on everything. #oklaed
As expected, not participating in this effort, let alone know much about it, I’m out of my element tonight. Great topic and, for sure, I’ll be Considering the summary!!! Good night, Gracie. #oklaed
A5: Being an NBCT gave me the confidence to try things I otherwise would not have tried. I think it also gave me a level of respect that I might not otherwise have gotten. I have tried to use that to promote personal prof. development. #oklaed
A5 I started doing workshops and took a 2nd job with a non-profit doing educational outreach—which I wouldn’t have had the confidence to do otherwise. #oklaed
A5 -- first, the process gave me confidence in my own learning. And, frankly, for others in the building and in #oklaed, those initials gave me a credibility my 20+ years in the classroom sadly didn't. #oklaed#NBCTStrong
A5) When you are pushing yourself to get better, especially from what I’ve seen from the NBCT process, you become a leader. Leaders are learners and when you are learning and improving yourself, you are showing leadership. #oklaed
A4b. I have also learned that it is great preparation for other professional endeavors— Masters & PhD. I am constantly referring to my #NBCT work to provide reflection and evidence of learning. It would be more difficult without that understanding. #OKLAED
Q4. LEARNED: What did you learn from the NBCT process—or what have you seen others learn from the NBCT process? Is this what you were expecting? #oklaed
A5: From what I have observed, the NBCTs I know set the bar really high. Thanks to @MrsSearcy112 , I feel more than prepared during my full internship this semester. She leads from the front and leads by example, and she always advocates for us! ELA:OK! #oklaed
Absolutely true. Anyone can pass Boards. It’s whether or not you choose to grow during the process that makes the difference between a mediocre teacher and a great teacher imho #OklaEd
A5 -- After a year of taking risks in front of my kids, my colleagues, my administrators, I wasn't as hesitant about stepping up and volunteering for more leadership. BUT I was always clear...I was staying in the classroom. #oklaed#NBCTStrong
A5 I was already a leader at the local level. I challenged myself through the NBCT process to take a more active role at the state and national level. Really cool to look back during recertification to see how far this took me. #oklaed
A6) Not a lot of difference. I have seen NBCT teachers inspire students greatly, but have also seen non NBCT teachers inspire students in the same way. #OklaEd
Me either. I'm able to contribute to research, publish, present at conferences & establish credibility w/Ss so that when I tell them they can do it, they believe me. That's hugely imp to me. #oklaed
A6: my whole school is fully equipped with amazing teachers, not all NBCT’s, so I can’t tell a difference.. nothing against the NBCT’s, just praising those that are not.. we all have our strengths and weaknesses. #oklaed
A6 -- I hope I encouraged other Ts to take the same journey. It's about learning who you are as a teacher, and how to best help the Ss in front of you learn...and be their best selves. #oklaed#NBCTStrong
A6: I’m surrounded by amazing non NBCT teachers, and I’ve also had the honor of dealing with mentor NBCTs when a professional focuses on their craft the Ss win #oklaed
A5. I think #NBCT helps to establish credibility which has high effect size on student achievement. So that credibility does open doors for leadership opportunities. I was able to adjunct & do consulting bc of it—& feel confident in my knowledge bc I had that background. #OKLAED
Thanks! I've got to say, it is intense and I nearly quit when I found out I have to re-do Component 3. But I always tell my Ss not to give up, so I sure can't! My Ss are a part of the process, so they give feedback, too. #oklaed
Meeting with other candidates, sharing our thinking, analyzing student work, bouncing ideas for lessons off one another. Also, my Ss joined in the process. #oklaed
I told my Ss the year AFTER I submitted that if I guessed wrong, I got a do-over. And so would they on any project. Life is about revising and doing over and learning. #oklaed#NBCTStrong
A6 There can be advantages, but it goes back to what @MPSTechnology said earlier about what motivated getting the letters. Ss centered to T centered makes a big difference #oklaed
A6) One of my components was students dealing with different perspectives. After NBCT, the next year my class connected with over 100 classrooms. Although my school wasn't diverse, it taught me how to problem solve & ensure Ss could be exposed to cultural differences #OklaEd
A5: In 1999, I began a NBCT mentoring cohort in north Alabama. Having gone through the process practically blind, I vowed to help others. Continued to lead this group and others since then. As an admin, NBCT gives me a bit of street cred with teachers and other admins. #OklaEd
A6. In today’s #OKLAED climate, I think #NBCT teachers bring a constant dedication that Ss need. There is so much turn over, but most NBCTs I know are Career teachers who have been and will be teaching for years. Ss need that consistency & investment. #OKLAED
A5 The most important part of the #NBCT process has been learning how to explain why I do what I do. I have met veteran Ts who can't and that doesn't help anyone. You must be able to analyze, reflect and explain why so that other Ts can learn from you. #oklaed
a4 I noticed a lot of similarities in goals for NBCT, PAEMST, NCTM in terms of getting away from Ppt lessons, increasing engagement & thinking about what it really means to be fair. #oklaed
A6: The title does not make the teacher. The teacher makes the title. There are some teachers that even if you took their NBCT designation away from them, they can still lead and inspire. The only I know who is NBCT is highly effective and inspiring! #oklaed
A7 Time! Time was my enemy. Seemed I always needed more time to think, more time to write, more time to adapt, more time to try new things. I dropped almost all of my other responsibilities (committees - church, school, civic) to make time. #oklaed
A7: $$$, time, and willingness to change. The state has a scholarship that pays for most of it, but it still takes a LOT of time (hundreds of hours) and it is pointless if you're not willing to improve #oklaed
A7 Honestly, it is the unknown about the process. Yes, it is self-ignorance as I have not chosen to look into it, but still...also, is the process worth it if the money is not there? #Oklaleg#OklaEd Self-reflection can still be attained w/o the NBCT process
A7 Time and self-doubt when you don't get the score you wanted the first time around. But then I have to remind myself of what I tell my students: If you don't do well the first time, do it again! #oklaed
A7 -- I've been working with candidates since we had full support from the state. This is a rigorous process. Costly in $$ & time. The loss of the rewards has been a gut-check. Makes me value every candidate more. #oklaed#NBCTStrong
A7: $$$ was a big one. It took me two tries it was humbling and difficult without feedback on areas that needed to be corrected. Luckily I figured it out 😜#oklaed
A7) Time and $$$. I’ve had some new responsibilities put on me this school year that have me pretty overwhelmed. If the situation changes, I may look to consider it more strongly. #oklaed
Can’t a T invest in self-reflection, personal growth, be committed to excellence, & push themselves w/out jumping through expensive hoops? Someone’s making some serious $$$ off Ts. #oklaed
Kudos to those who do NBCT. No shame to those who can’t afford it or grad school.
A7: There are so many things in the education world that I just do not know about. It's my lack of insight into these things that are obstacles to me pursuing them. I am thankful for this #oklaed chat. I have gained so much insight into a world that I did not know exists. Thanks!
A7) NBCT is rigorous. Be open minded & expect to get lots of constructive criticism. Don't get down. Accept failure, reflect, grow from it and keep working towards improving your teaching practices #OklaEd
#oklaed new teachers please remember there is enough room at the table for all of us.. don’t feel like you don’t have a seat if you don’t get your masters or NBCT, I saved you a seat. #oklaed
A7 - I won't be finished with year 3 until December. Plus if I get the fellowship for which I am applying I will be starting grad school this summer. So time is the biggest obstacle #oklaed
Great chat, #OklaEd Always enjoy the reflection and the input of others. Don't have much to offer on the topic of NBCT. Have a great week!
Sign up for #EdCampOKC today and buy a 2018 shirt! See you March 3rd!
Yes. Adapting to the Ss we have in front of us, not some imaginary class of Ss who are super-performers, super-compliant and can't wait to hear what I have to say. #oklaed
A6 It seems that Ss of #NBCT teachers can spend more time leading their own learning, they feel like their voices are heard, and, at least in an #ela classroom, they are encouraged to develop their voices. #oklaed
All of us who push ourselves to be the best for our students deserve kudos!! And we deserve a return on our investment of time and $$ and hard work. #oklaed
A6) great teachers inspire, challenge, and engage students with quality instruction im sure those teachers have a variety of training, styles, and “letters” after their names #OklaEd
A7) Money and time. I think these can be overcome by financial support obviously, and easing of duties/other responsibilities during the process. #OklaEd
A7. I was SO fortunate that @okea@TahlequahSchool had a cohort so I went through the process w a group. 5 teachers in my dept who were #NBCT & I had a designated mentor. I was highly supported & that collective teacher efficacy allowed me to feel prepared & successful! #OKLAED
A6: Research shows that students in an NBCT's classroom may receive anywhere between 3-8 weeks more learning. MS had a great study last year. https://t.co/UYfeszbsa3 From my experience, students are actively engaged, and the T-S relationships are very strong. #OklaEd
The process should humble us as we see the importance of looking for ways to improve. I see that played out beautifully in what you are saying here. #oklaed
A7 It can consume you if you let it, but the same can be said of a quality master’s or doctoral program. Bottom line should be never stop learning. #oklaed
A5. I haven’t gained a new title, but I’ve engaged in a lot of great conversations and collaborations. Not a leader as much as an encouraging colleague. #oklaed
A8 -- I see connections all the time...And I assess all PD thru the lens of self-reflection and making choices that impact student learning. #oklaed#NBCTStrong
A8: Candidates develop PLNs wherever they can find them. I think it is more intense than my Master's program was, but that's why you have to teach for 3 yrs before you start - so you CAN talk about your teaching. None of the others require having a classroom! #oklaed
A7 Having the right start makes a difference for NBCT. State used to provide a few days in Durant. NEA now provides a JumpStart program developed to get you not just toe-in-the-water but knee deep to start strong. #oklaed
A8 #NBCT seems to be one piece to the puzzle. It's about analysis and reflection of my actual practice. I see advanced degrees as a way to gain more research-based and theoretical background for what I do. PD, like #edcampokc can help with specific lessons, tech, skills. #oklaed
A8 One case in point is with Northeastern State University. Your NBCT grants you 9 graduate hours toward your master's degree. Others are more subtle, like leading out in PD events to help other educators. #oklaed
A7) compensation is a big deterrent to teachers, the process is expensive and takes a lot of time. If we don’t make enough money to make it worth our time why do it? Does it get us more respect from anyone beside our peers? #OklaEd
A8 -- Once wrote an editorial for DOK. Said my NBC was more meaningful to me than my masters. Dean at OU told me she told others that I did not get my masters' at OU! LOL! #oklaed#NBCTStrong
That's probably my biggest lesson so far - tweak schedules, change readings, do what is necessary for the current students, not who you've had in the past or might have in the future. #oklaed
A7: Time. You need a lot. Perseverance. You need even more of it. Collaboration. You need a great partner, or a few great partners. Humility. If you don't have it before, fail a section you think will be easy, and develop the humility and grit to try again! #oklaed
I do not know much about the process, but I have realized that a lot of the professionals I have had the privilege to listen to at professional developments are NBCTs and they are LIT! They spread the word about other PDs and I try to be there. #oklaed
Agreed! Take the time to develop your own teacher identity first. When you feel confident/ready for a new or different challenge— there are many options. But just keep learning, through whatever outlet. But always be a learner! #OKLAED#TeacherAsStudent
A8 NBCT process made it much easier to decide what I wanted to pursue for my masters and I was much more focused on my degree than I would have been prior to NBCT #oklaed
In some ways, "getting the letters" can cause alienation between haves & have nots. There's no glory or fun in that. Focus on Ss needs which translates into our need to grow. #oklaed

A9 Support from other NBCTs and actually knowing where to start—it’s a big task and it helps to have someone to answer questions and point you in the right direction. #oklaed
A8: This chat doesn’t pertain to me.. so I am just going to keep reminding the new 1st hear Ts that may be here and not NBCT like me, I work with many veteran Ts that haven’t ever gotten their NBC... so don’t lose hope. We don’t all follow that path. #oklaed
A9 -- Consistent support from #okleg. The process is costly. It takes personal dedication. It forever changes the way you look at yourself and your students. Lawmakers get returns: accomplished Ts who STAY in the classroom. Bring back the stipend. #oklaed#NBCTStrong
A9) I think $$$ to do so would help and I think if I had a mentor that I could go to that has been through it, that would get me more motivated to do this. #oklaed
NBCT does infuse a bit of confidence that someone else recognizes we're on track. If one is in a competitive department (as opposed to nurturing), reassurance can be empowering. #oklaed
A7 Obstacles: time...family, school commitments, other PD commitments. It would need to be made a priority and something else put on the back burner for a time. #OklaEd
A great way to do the NBCT process is together. SDE has regional support throughout the year and OEA/NEA has a JumpStart Training that lets you lift off to a strong beginning.

I say the same thing bc #NBCT was all classroom-teacher oriented whereas MEd had some theoretical, autonomous parts that didn’t have direct transference. I appreciate both learning experiences, but NBCT was more challenging and the most relevant to teaching. #OKLAED
A7: I sometimes find that teachers simply don't know much about NB, and if they do, there isn't a support system (or even NBCTs in their school/district) to provide guidance. Aside from that, finances, fear of failure, & procrastination are certainly obstacles as well. #OklaEd
That's the negative in our profession, "something else put on the back burner". Career Ts really are the best at giving themselves to their communities. #OklaEd
You don't have to be a great T to become and #NBCT, but becoming one will help you become better if you let it. It does take a lot of time and some $$, so be prepared! #oklaed
Great job everybody. If you know of a great teacher ready to take a next step, encourage them to consider NBCT. Shoulder taps from highly regarded colleagues and admin are the #1 reason people start. #oklaed
The way you’re considered an A+ principal and touch the lives of your teachers, students, parents, and friends is your most major accomplishment. #oklaed
