#ONedchat Archive
The idea for @onedchat stemmed from a conversation between Allison Fuisz and Amy Bowker in the Spring of 2014. They noticed a gap on Twitter where an Ontario-based education chat was concerned. After several conversations and a vision in mind, @onedchat was created.

Hi Mistene - love that name!
A1: Gamification = prizes according to my 7s. GBL = higher level thinking/possible analysis
A1) GBL is using games to teach. Gamification is using techniques/mechanics from games to teach, motivate, etc.
Thanks for coming out tonight Mary! Glad you can join us tonight!
A1: I use both - for me is powerful when student choice is at the center - quest based learning!

Glad you can come out Keegan! Will be a great chat tonight!
A1: Game Based Learning is powerful in that the learning is experiential - great medium for learning
I'm excited for this chat cause i'm looking for how tk move past "playing minecraft" to "learning w/from minecraft"
A1) I feel like gamification is an overall gamey classroom, GBL is aimed toward learning specific topics. does that make sense?
Hi Theresa, glad you can join us tonight
Hello friends! Lise from Ottawa popping by for some
yes - enhances the learning experience
Sometimes gets a bad rap but anything done right it can be very powerful, executed poorly, becomes 'pointification'
Hi Rola glad you can come tonight! Definitely a great chat if you love Minecraft!
A1: GBL uses gaming techniques to overall enhance the learning experience
A1- Game based learning 2enhance learning process/skills- gamification is +ing elements in the classroom https://t.co/AwLcW2cKyN
I have used minecraft for structures, it was student led, I am excited for EDU in the fall!
A1) GBL is the use of games in classroom, gamification is adding game elements, like reward Ss for certain behaviors
A1 use comparison GBL is when I used wii to help reinforce decimals with game. Gamification is when My Ss use MC to show learning
A1 could involve badges and school house systems
I love this definition! https://t.co/dKwkWoG2KX
A1: Gamification = prizes according to my 7s. GBL = higher level thinking/possible analysis
I like the word "gamy" I agree
hi from Shelley in Ottawa
. Hearing mire about is why i'm here...
wow coming from a far! Glad you could join our chat tonight!
. I agree, introducing choice to classroom is hugely beneficial. Give Ss control over what they are learning to motivate
A1. GBL eliminates the fear of failure. Learning isn't focused solely on win-lose... As losing is often more beneficial for the Ss
you will definitely learn lots tonight! We have some great experts! Thanks for coming out!
My Ss love "War", great for no. id, quick decisions. Brains working fast!@mr_isaacs
is now trending in Canada, ranking 49

with a personal invite... couldn't resist!
A2: I run my class in a quest (choice) based manner - students choose learning path, earn XP for completed quests - level up
thanks for coming out tonight Mistene!
A2 I am using it right now in a variety of ways, in the future I would love to have more collaborative projects with other schools
A2 not currently using or, at least, not in any explicit/planned way. Here for ideas, help, inspiration
Important point, cannot be cobbled together. As with any motivation design must be planned and audience focussed
A2: I teach game design & development so game based learning is at the core of my class. everything relates to games!
Does my Lego wall count as I post engineering challenges? :)
A2 program like class dojo perfect example of game based but may be construed as gamified because of points, leaderboards, avatars
Q2- Tried a digital breakout game this week with 7s. Now they want to make their own.
I am late but am so glad to be here!!!
A2 Learning with Ss during enrichment and afterschool, New and exploring now. Designing school. Working as teams

A2: my Ss are making games via and sharing their iteration process - part of our experience & iteration learning!
Well understanding distinction btwn GBL and Gamification is imptnt to good use of all modes of MC.
awesome - what are you doing currently? and perhaps we can collaborate!
Hello PLN just popping in Rizza from Philippines
A2 Where do u start with this in early primary? At $10/app per device, how do you make it happen safely? https://t.co/8sZnJkMLIw
A2: I want to make sure that HOW we are using games like is more than Ss logging more screen time
A2) Currently not using, hoping to gain better understanding & lots of play time this summer to incorporate next year

, we just finished a unit where s's rebuilt forts from W1812 now creating countries matching land development for Geo
you mean like or ? I'd like to get my kids creating those.
A2 I'm trying my best to get back to the times when Games were designed specifically for learning. Capturing Data, Assessable ect.
I always used free apps, there are so many apps tied to curriculum out there...even starting with math.
Been using Minecraft last year or so for my Ss to showcase their learning.Started trying out scratch this year with my coding club
Hi. Helen just getting here and enjoying the convo!
after school is a great approach for sure! low risk / low barrier of entry.
thanks Marius! It is definitely a great chat tonight!
A2: I have no idea where to start. Here to learn! Think my kinder boys could benefit!
Steven, how often do you engage the art of Narrative and Story to those quests? to what results?
Wow! Concise! Might I suggest changing the word learning to "curriculum" as games are full of learning :) https://t.co/YWjJXlqW05
A1: Game-based is integrating a game into the learning process whereas gamification is transforming learning into a game...
It's all about the conversations - we need to discuss these topics with students!
Hey , going to try and join on for a bit! I used to teach in ON, does that count?
A2-Using for developing skills hru learning process from collaboration, Creativity, critical thinking & perseverance
YAY! The Iterative Design Process is incredibly valuable right ?
. Very diverse group of Ss as well
My thoughts too! https://t.co/MC9gM1q3uO
A2) Currently not using, hoping to gain better understanding & lots of play time this summer to incorporate next year
. I want to teach professors some game design. May tackle that next semester using as a platform.
Minecraft specifically? I use many other apps but my class is very curious about Minecraft https://t.co/MSMPUCdONZ
I always used free apps, there are so many apps tied to curriculum out there...even starting with math.
this is the biggest challenge, when people here we are playing Minecraft in class they are skeptical of learning
we are doing that! is a master of making his own and sharing w/ Ss. :) It is awesome.
that's inspiring Spiri, always learning to support best practices,
There's so much learning in game design! We learn far more when we take on role of teacher. Adds accountability!
I always loved using them to reinforce concepts. Now I teach coding to for that... It's all amazing.
A2a: I use to gamify. Ss earn XP and their health points are affevted by their behaviour choices.
- agreed. We need to remind all Ts about the WHY behind gamification before fully embracing it :) Just my thoughts.
. I grew up in Winnipeg but now live in Minnesota so I follow lots in Canada
I want a Lego wall those are awesome!
Building concepts &skills - co-constructed criteria & reflecting on learning
I've used it in math, language arts and science so far this year
Wow that will definitely resignation with Ss. They'll always remember the activity.
A2- I came up with headbands game for Ss to learn sight wrds, math, science terms, etc.
Q3 is up in a minute folks.
Sorry not minecraft. We are waiting for EDU in the fall. Our board is just starting. :)
Kinder girls too! They need this too! https://t.co/WkMHoTaiLA
A2: I have no idea where to start. Here to learn! Think my kinder boys could benefit!
wow that's great! Welcome to our chat!
- scaffolding for certain - idea of concepts certainly integral. Thank you!
A2b: I use GBL constantly! Games in math to practice skills, quiz style games like jeopardylabs, , , etc.
I teach all coding apps, codea, Alice, Scratch...... anything I can get my hands on.... block 2.....
you will, incorporate games during math, Ss will love it!
Absolutely! So many Ss discuss their worlds and what they're building, the joy on their faces...got to tap into that
there are some great iPad apps as well
A2- Explaining learning through and preparing games for colleagues.
that's okay we still have lots of time in the chat! Glad you can come out!
not always the answer! T confided in me that Ss asked to simply let them learn - not deal with a game
My SK daughter loves playing math games on the iPad....
Hello my friend! It wouldn't be a hat without you! Glad to see you here
But I do agree that long term loses it's novelty. Seen this in Biz.
For sure! And for every grade!
Do you use it on iPads? One per student? Each with own Minecraft account? https://t.co/yTvQIOJgdC
I've used it in math, language arts and science so far this year
I am not doubting the learning that is possible, but making Ss use is purposeful (connected to curric) not wasteful.
Hi David just arriving here. A2 staring next week. First task is s's will be creating regions of Canada
Would be great! Have seen one before, great for planning and writing with minifigs as characters! https://t.co/8cYjVnj7u0

Lot of talk of LEGO - I am super excited to attend Brickfest Live April 30 - May 1 https://t.co/3iHS6Z468n Come on down!
- that is quite interesting! Goes to show we need to listen to when co-learning :) Thanks for that.
A3) Since first step was playing a game in professional development, next step is having Ts make their own games!
same here. No one is using Minecraft in our board that I'm aware of. New territory. https://t.co/EoDWhGQjz3
Sorry not minecraft. We are waiting for EDU in the fall. Our board is just starting. :)

With proceedural writing to link into the coding of games.... sequences and steps to write own games! https://t.co/bpHSUYPt4g
Yes! Equal opportunity gaming!
A2: just beginning to incorporate coding into math class. How to make it an integral aspect vs add-on?
Q2-ish the power in using games/minecraft in ed is the unpacking of the experience & the connections that can be teased out
A3 I am working towards developing more curriculum resources for to have servers/ levels to explore for the curriculum
Great question - might require paradigm shift and allow for more time for coding - we always end up squeezing it in :(
big ideas anchor the learning. allows for increased motivation and critical thinking

Yes yes yes https://t.co/lXwNjSSK08
A3) I learn so much from , and inspiring chat on Tues. night, so helpful, great ideas
Q3 STUDENTS! Ask what games they play, how would they connect games to learning. My students pitched an idea to me for Minecraft
Grade 7/8, CDSBEO, very positive experience in my time using it 3-4 years, have used both, mostly creative
Q3.. I once read about a teacher in Calgary class based on D&D I would Love to do that.. :)
Would love you all to try some more games in as they are great ways to engage both the Ss and their minds.
A3: need to continue to co-learn with my Ss to connect with their strengths/goals RE: GBL etc; reach out to my PLN too!
i have used survival as well as it related to a writing assignment we were working on
XLAP is fantastic use of gamification, narrative and quest approach! I Highly recommend!
Or play games along with S's. T's need 'permission' to play - give themselves room and release fears https://t.co/7E6OOX7Pjz
A3) Since first step was playing a game in professional development, next step is having Ts make their own games!
Good for you! Keep it up Ss live it!
love this idea. Model for Ts. Get Ss involved in PD by creating games for Ts.
. So far I have only used game mode and creative. Still learning from Ss.
A3- I like making games out of crazy things, ice trays, bottle caps, etc.
I think you make an important point! Teachers should be playing the games. Understand the game for more effectiveness
Yes, reach each child, inspire and support success
Kahoots is great tool, but quizzizz has a unique homework tool where you can assign to be completed over time, use it when absent
A3 incorporate in whether to enhance skills or learn new concept, twitter is the best source of help
just trying 2 wrap my head around how it could work successfully in grades 1/2 & would love 2 get ideas for primary.
regular access to tech tools. Sign out hardware makes natural integration JIT -just in time - access a struggle.
Will take a look - sounds like an opportunity!
Awe, you're very kind! Last nights chat, Art & , always amazed at how it can be included!
MinecraftEDU on iPads? I thought it was Windows based only?
introduce shapes and math, building, could be an art lesson as well
XLAP..? ...not remembering what that is...shake my memory please? https://t.co/9dfxRn9CwQ
XLAP is fantastic use of gamification, narrative and quest approach! I Highly recommend!
A3- Our best learning is with & from the SS who collaboratively build the critical thinking by allowing time to reflect & share
Q4: How does GBL & Gamification promote a growth mindset? How can we harness this w/ Minecraft? https://t.co/t38HoZzWHK
absolutely is one great tool..do you use in your quiz
So glad to hear so many people speaking of the incredible value of co-learning - my mantra! https://t.co/UhKtskC249
A3: need to continue to co-learn with my Ss to connect with their strengths/goals RE: GBL etc; reach out to my PLN too!
Minecraft pocket edition is on iPads
Q3 ish the game is a tool not the product.Knowing the big ideaU want Ss to explore should be determining factor 4 deciding how 2go
Agreed, But give T's choice and time to engage with students; build connections to teaching & learning! https://t.co/OtaoHMJLpT
I think you make an important point! Teachers should be playing the games. Understand the game for more effectiveness
Fully admit that I am excited to see so many awesome as part of tonight's w/ &
A4 (Ctnd) - game does just that. It allows growth and challenge. Not just creative building. Utilize all aspects to empower Ss
Yes we want the EDU editions. :)
A4 - Games are inherantly about fail and try again! Learn new mechanics to succeed. Test the boundaries. Minecraft as a (pt1)
yes completely inspired me at PD day in Ottawa. Has me rethinking meaningful tech use and org'n
is the hashtag for Explore Like a Pirate. A book all about gamification and GBL
A4 Promotes growth mindset as Ss fail and never give up. They keep going; look up potions to code; keep trying.
Time for play. Play to learn! https://t.co/Vgq3XFmLAA
A3- Our best learning is with & from the SS who collaboratively build the critical thinking by allowing time to reflect & share
teacher as the DM for sure! Check out work of and with for classroom
Hey all quickly dropping in on tonight
Right into Minecraft! So Added Question! What do games do a great job promoting growth?
LOL. I have never tried Minecraft and I am pumped to try. And fail. And try again. Who gives up on games???
A4: process / multiple learning skills / communication galore / creativity / critical thinking etc. Be open to it!
A4) Ss take ownership of learning, take risks, make decisions, create, problem solve, collaborate, think critically & creatively
a4: supports a curiosity and a desire to "get it." What better way to foster a growth mindset
THIS IS THE POINT! Kids rarely ever give up on games. They learn through the mechanics to overcome! https://t.co/bwVvSZHvIh
LOL. I have never tried Minecraft and I am pumped to try. And fail. And try again. Who gives up on games???
Games allow a chance to fail in safe environment
A4 students collaborate, explore, students more willing to fail and try new things in a game environment
A4: games promote the idea that you can fail once and succeed the next time. Ss learn from games that you can improve!
games allow students to be the expert and have autonomy / agency in school where they often do not. Very powerful
Q4) Promotes collaboration and adds a sense of urgency. This reduces fear of failure.
Absolutely, in exploration and adventure this is a key motivator.
games allow children to try, try and try again
Amen!! https://t.co/ZYveQ3caKV
A4) Ss take ownership of learning, take risks, make decisions, create, problem solve, collaborate, think critically & creatively
A4- Perseverance & new learning by solving problems- building interpersonal relationship thru collaborative learning.
A4: process / multiple learning skills / communication galore / creativity / critical thinking etc. Be open to it!
Students are great teachers what a powerful way to encourage and leadership https://t.co/tsGnAktPwc
. So far I have only used game mode and creative. Still learning from Ss.
I have it at home on Mac & xBox..so fun
Yes Urgency, and opportunity for failure is a key value added learning oppotunity for players.
A4 gbl keeps the class and Ss interested in whats going to happen, gives them a chance to learn collaboratively
I have just lost a game of Chinese Checkers and ready to give up!
students love showing others their creations and projects in
I agree! https://t.co/0yxdCtzLtL
A4) Ss take ownership of learning, take risks, make decisions, create, problem solve, collaborate, think critically & creatively
A4b: Ss have so many strategies for success in Minecraft. They have great ideas for applying this to learning activities as well!
Amazing Sway! You've inspired me to dig deeper!
Agree so true Ss continue to question & learn together building knowledge.
AH! So if I let buy an XBox 1 I could figure out Minecraft?
A4 - Added - What about students sense of Agency within games! They become immersed in more than just the cognitive senses.
funny how in a game it is perceived as keep trying, not failing
Agreed! Co-learning, agency in play, examine & analyze game design, deconstruct 2 build it better or build from format.
Ss are much more willing to persevere and keep trying in problems involving working in Minecraft versus a worksheet
A4) GBL & Gamification allow for Ss to overcome failures in a ~controlled environment. Engage Ss in reflection for growth mindset.
There is a free trial out I hear! It's a preview!
. Yes. Gives voice to those extra quiet Ss. A place to shine
I like this crew. So glad I was brought into your world!
my students working with redstone to build moveable doors problem solving and collaboration was unbelievable
HA ha ha.... I lose go fish all the time and refuse to quit until I win! :)
glad it helped even if just to get some ideas of where you can go with your Ss in Minecraft
But in Math is the complete opposite.
learning doesn't end when the game is over.
Q4 I don't know that it can be... anymore than a pencil can. Intent is everything. How intentional are T's being? How is equity?
This is one of the most powerful things about MC. It scaffolds for each user! many ways to accomplish goal = LIFE
we have learned to reflect on the skills building form GBL. 6C's progressions.
Q5 Minecraft’s cultural connection to kids is powerful; how do we harness it even without Minecraft yet? https://t.co/s7ZaZKG2gT
- so true. Connect life skills for success to opportunities that make learning fun.
I think it is fair to say we like you too! cone on back again now!
. Behavior issues suddenly disappear too.
This is why Ts should use games in class. Then Ss can say "who gives up on class?” :)
Amazing discussions happening in tonight!!
I had to persevere and problem solve. Learned about modding and NPCs for a project I was putting together for gr 4s
I know Ts who integrate coding and gaming at least 1xweek to improve struggle-ability in other subjects.
Ss build a relationship & a trust of problem solving collaboratively.
I agree! But sadly not all games are created equal! I think more we'll see FUNb games designed for edu. https://t.co/PrPhn8g0q8
This is why Ts should use games in class. Then Ss can say "who gives up on class?” :)
A5: design thinking approach to solving real world problems - cardboard and lego works as a starter point :)
Exactly!! Also levels playing field so Ss challenged by writing can feel success https://t.co/oQxIqwqcBw
. Behavior issues suddenly disappear too.
Q5 Minecraft’s cultural connection to kids is powerful; how can we harness this even if our school does not have Minecraft yet?
A creeper got me in my first two minutes ever..but I persevered :D builds character https://t.co/hiEjXFFMjS
Easily! It's a tremendously scaffolded game. Early players grow quickly. but play survival FIRST
A5a: allowing Minecraft culture to be a part of learning! Books in the class library, art projects inspired by Minecraft...
Ya, we can’t expect to make Ss play games we make. Rather Ts should focus on making games Ss WANT to play
So important to give them a chance to show and shine!
A5 use other tech to connect, we do and did a cross country lesson using google hangouts to share and connect
A5- bringing aspects of Ss pop culture into the classroom shows them that we care to develop relationships.
Q5 let Ss share their passion eg: in writing, poetry whatever the game does that inspires students to create, let them bring it in
A5 Minecraft Stop Motion video creation ipad app free. Can buy set to start. I made additional backgrounds to work with Lego too
A5 - Have you ever just worn a Minecraft shirt to school? It resounds. Incorporate MC Characters into narrative and see eyes light
Well, you need SOME kind of machine to play Minecraft on in order to learn it… ;-) -- he's lobbying for a specific one!
- Go back to the WHY and communication is important + blended approach etc.
I've also used coloured tiles to model . Get creative!
A5 genius hour as well, did it last year for first time in the spring
My Ss made videos of Minecraft at home and shared in class. I had NO idea how to use it. But they showed me SO much.
I use Minecraft lingo in my word problems...
Thanks all. I have to head out early as its time to play taxi driver and drive my kids home from cheer practice. Game on!
This is key! it's their culture! and we need to align OUR way of teaching to meet them in the middle. https://t.co/hK02kF1hwj
A5- bringing aspects of Ss pop culture into the classroom shows them that we care to develop relationships.
A5) If isn’t accessible, use other learning tools such as: https://t.co/89KQAt2b6g that play of that culture and teach
A5 Ss bring in their experience, we facilitate connections..even if they aren't able to actually play in class
A5- Ss w/ cardboard 2wards interactive designs from circuits 2gears. Importance process of iteration w/ enduser in mind 4feedback
A5 Made a minecraft box face used minecraft paper. Ss an use with greenscreen pictures
- great example of the much needed co-learning environment in ! We are a resource, not a source of info
I have Makerbins in my class where Ss can use things like Lego, knex, marbles to create and make things. Creative thinking, collab
My daughter use old pen and paper to design parts of her worlds. She says it is easier sometimes. She's 7 btw.
a5 had students create a board game based on one of their favorite MC YTers It was Powerful.
A5) It's meaningful & relevant to them, such a motivating factor for many Ss, able to make stronger connection to content
However, I will be trying to bring it into our board soon. They paved the way. They were leaders and changed my thinking.
A5 - I use Minecraft lingo in my word problems...
totally agree Jessica! Build / create connections with Ss
Great example of the much needed co-learning environment in https://t.co/doiHvKM7ok
My Ss made videos of Minecraft at home and shared in class. I had NO idea how to use it. But they showed me SO much.
!! Age-old questions, discussed long before there was Twitter, or even before schools. https://t.co/U7o9ft81dq
guess I'm a few years late lol
Oh I agree. I could have cried when they did it. Collaboration, communication, curriculum.... It was awesome.
Lurk & learn from others sharing games - connect to learn from 'experts' or other Ss
Minecraft is branched into many areas including https://t.co/8E6gVuDqji and other games. We ts can use the same xmpl
- thanks for popping into the chat Jerry! The crew appreciates all you do!
Last question is on deck.
will check it out, thanks!
Even at Halloween Ss super proud of their (often handcrafted) related costumes
Following everyone to learn more. I'm behind! 😩
Q6:As educators, how can we incorporate the Minecraft community & students to develop GBL lessons? https://t.co/1FLMHYzpN0
Yesterday said: the students teach me about Minecraft I teach them Spanish. https://t.co/X1PhclxeZN
Great example of the much needed co-learning environment in https://t.co/doiHvKM7ok
My Ss made videos of Minecraft at home and shared in class. I had NO idea how to use it. But they showed me SO much.
-themed reading materials (fiction and non-fiction) are incredibly popular with kids!
