This includes principals, in-service teachers, university supervisors of student teachers, education professors, higher education administration, instructional technology specialists, and so on. Hello ! Cherise from CA joining in. I currently teach tech to preservice English teachers in a credential program
Adam, stop in now at where will be chatting literacies
they just sang the National Anthem - game starts soon!
Will be interested in your contributions about literacy, poetry month, and library week
So can catch the rest of the game when ends
Q1: What are favorite tech tools to promote literacy?
A1: I used NewsELA during my Junior Year Placement - thought it worked well for different levels of students!
Why was NewsELA helpful to you?
What is your favorite tech tool to promote literacy
It lets you change the reading level of articles. Helpful for current events.
A1 is paper still a technology? We do a lot of paper building and sketching
Will look into NewsELA and recommend it to teachers. Thanks
Q2: How has access to tech tools changed the definition of literacy?
we do a lot of mindmapping, sketches and drawings. Sometimes lists
If you can stop at and contribute, we know you have a lot to offer
That's all literacies, then
A2 anything can be a literacy. It is about how you use something and can describe to someone else
My Digital Literacy page https://t.co/om251GZS7c Ability to find, understand, evaluate, create, & communicate digital info
Would love to, Judy, but at and . Will try to participate in next time!
A2: I think it's made literacy more difficult in a way. Now you have normal "written text" literacy and digital literacy.
Thanks, Jerry. How do you see the definition of literacy changing given digital tools?
That is an intriguing perspective, which I will discuss with teachers tomorrow f2f
a2 more tech tools increase the forms that information can be shared
What are some other tech tools your students use for communication, collaboration, etc
Do you think the access to multiple literacies complicates the teaching/learning process
Not only shared but shared in much more numerous ways
we use comic strip apps to tell stories with a different view
Hello I'm late as well. Stumbled upon this chat accidentally Justin middle school social studies.
Yes, because some Ss come to school with more digital or written text literacy than others may. Can't be helped tho
Love comic strip apps. Do you have any favorite ones?
Q3: Why is promoting literacy a part of all teachers’ responsibilities? Or maybe, you disagree
Glad to have you. We're on Q3 Why is promoting literacy a part of all teachers’ responsibilities?
strip design is one of my favorite
A3 In the age of Google they can find the content on two seconds. Ss need to be literate enough to do something with it
Need to look into that one--do you have a link?
What do you like having students do with the content they find?
A1 Check out for engaged reading!
A3 even in stem, students have to be able to explain to others what is happening
A3: Because every class requires students to be literate.
Hi Amy, do you believe all teachers need to be teachers of literacy? Why or why not?
So does that include music classes, for instance?
A3: I teach social studies. Difficult to teach content w/out teaching literacy. Gaps in vocabulary acquisition big challenge
A2 Literacy - reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing, visually representing - to the nth degree now because of tech
How do you address gaps in vocabulary?
I would say yes. But that's a different kind of literacy right? That's musical literacy.
A3: all teachers should teach content based literacy not basic literacy
What do you mean, Guy? Explain in a tweet if possible.
A3 It is a core requirement in all subject and in life.
So you're saying the teaching of literacy is more critical and more varied than ever before?
A3 Can't even say it enough...everyone teaches literacy. Literacy = thinking, imo
Still inputs and outputs though imo.
Beyond the classroom, students need literacy to survive, let alone thrive! A3
close reads & have students circle words they don't know. Have students collaborate and create quiz for the class.
love that one: will share it tomorrow for discussion w/ students
I mean content Ts need to focus on vocab genre compr and writing within their content
We need to do more of students creating their own quizzes. They can even use tech tools for that
Good post, I teach English and so have no choice. Literacy opens so many pathways and understandings. A3
A3 It can get carried away though. Have kids writing too much in gym it's a detractor
Responsible citizens must b able 2 think more critically abt the infinitely >amt of info coming@them these days
I mean the message that all teach literacy can send the wrong message that we do not value the content as much
Great point Amy. We want our students to active and leading our community.
And they have to be able to decipher things like this! https://t.co/mRNqxzOjKK
Responsible citizens must b able 2 think more critically abt the infinitely >amt of info coming@them these days
Yes, the amount of info is immense and requires intense critical thinking to determine biases, fakes
In our school, we emphasise the need for strong literacy for strong thinking and analysis.
In our school, we emphasise the need for strong literacy for strong thinking and analysis.
But how can you separate content from literacy?
I rly blve a great deal of econ trouble lately came from lack of literacy, ppl not reading/thinking
agree -i'd say that's one class where literacy maybe isn't used. although i've seen more writing in gym lately
A3:I mean, if you go to the basics, being literate means you're able to read and write. Isn't that the root to all education?
An argument could be made for reading game plays, lifting charts, etc.
Are you referring to any specific economic troubles or do you mean in general?
I work w/ PE teachers who incorporate lots of literacy in their classes
So true. People can not be critical if they don't understand.what they are being confronted with.
hard 2 name a fav tool. Digit composition tools r important as well as annotation 4 ex
Its not about separation its about where you spend most of your time & effort I say that as a literacy researcher
We find a lot of our students have very low financial literacy understandings.
I see content and literacy as intermingled
good pt.just thinking from when i was in M&HS.didn't have that.was where we just got2play
At the end of the day...they will be in charge...All of us must make sure they are ready!
literacy broadly construed=being able 2 read cues, norms, situation. Imp 4 Ts 2 make such linkages
needs to be available for play, too
Same is true of adults in terms of financial literacy skills
is starting w/a Q not an ok strategy? So many have been taught it as a "hook"
But doesn't recess also involve literacies? Communication, for instance
definitely.if you dont have recess then2much reading/writing in gym=awful
p1: I don't want kids to just read about science, I want them to DO science, think Sc, think like a scientist
Do you mean starting a paper w/ a question?
Absolutely, but let's not start assigning and testing it! ;-)
haha i think we can all agree with that
Agree, and there is lot more we need to stop "testing"
p2: espcly in elementary when time for sci and SSt is so limited
We can address some of that by overlapping the subject areas in elementary school where it can be easier to do
Absolutely! Tone, inflection, pacing, body language, all a type of literacy
this is why i love these chats. always learning something new
a matter of where emphasis is. Content in Art should not play second fiddle
JudyArzt
Slight different here for Q4: April is National Poetry Month: what are your plans?
Great point Judy. In many cases, students teach the parents!
yes seems 2b among top 4 ways to start an essay thru elem + MS. & Fact, definition, anecdote
In NZ, it's a serious reality!
When it comes to digital literacies, often children teach adults if adults willing
it is ok. The question is the message for Ts. Where is the focus?
Today I had primary grades take 1:1 iPads for a sensory walk. Next week they'll write poems from the 5 senses pics
Financial literacy is a serious issue globally
What a cool idea, I do sensory poetry with my seniors, they love getting out of the classroom.
A4: if i was in a classroom, could definitely look at different poems for whatever part of social studies we were looking at
Made connections with local chocolate shop and library. April 21 Free goodies 4 Ss who share
We now have it as part of our timteabled classes due our concern about it. Ss need to be informed.
very true, seldom done in lrge districts too many directives about literacy and math time
Love the idea & will share w/ teachers tomorrow. We also need to let students know it's & celebrate
my S used 2 cr8 figurative Lang books w/her Ss. Can be used 4 current events, theme exploration
Love this type of poetry, great thinking!
Have an interactive need a poem, take a poem- have a poem leave a poem board
But math time is literacy time, isn't it?
A4 You got me thinking nothing concrete but I have some ideas.
Hi Cherise, awesome idea, used storify for twitter summaries, never though of this.
! I feel so old-fashioned LOL.
Yes, poetry can reach students and people of all ages
can we send some student teachers your way then? Help them learn it can be done differently
Love some of the ideas we're sharing here on about Keep them coming.
is amazing 4 annotating on screen. Can also do collaborative annotation &
When students are poetry literate, th world becomes
Long commute, but would be good to do some international exchanges
happy to collaborate, postage might be steep!
Q5: Next week is National Library Week: what are your plans?
Planning to work with some folks to have Ss share through as well.
A4 Having a spoken word competition around a social issue can sometime ignite excitement in the middle and upper grades.
I see what ur saying. Ea discipline has its own literacy too. Scientists read certain ways & can teach that literacy
Great idea for a & easy to do and discuss
A4: Once had students write poems/ rap about the presidential election . They loved it.
Great post. We've found our Ss are keen on spoken word but not on poetry!
A4 incorporating a rap from Hamilton could also be powerful for my content. We are just wrapping up the Constitution.
Thanks for a great chat and making me feel so welcome. need to go teach my class!
A3 disciplinary literacy is smthng that content teachers are uniquely qualified to teach. Make clear ur specific ways of R/W
Do you use any specific online sites for rap in social studies?
Share w/ your classes some ideas from Do students use Twitter?
I believe so, as students and teachers need to talk, read through problems, write, etc.
