#5thchat is for people interested in chatting about topics in education, especially as they relate to Grade 5. The goal is to connect people who enjoy learning & sharing, plus supporting & creating partnerships worldwide!
Hello everyone! Welcome. My name is Julie Thorp from Forest Hills Schools in Cincinnati. I teach 5th grader literacy at Sherwood Elementary. Favorite summer activity...enjoying time in the mountains. @SherwoodArcher1@FHSchools#5thchat
I'm Paul Solarz, a former 5th grade teacher (turned 4th grade teacher this year) from Arlington Heights, Illinois. Great thanks to @juliethorp for moderating #5thchat this evening!!! :)
A1: A learning portfolio is a tool that allows Ss to collect, archive and showcase their work, reflect upon it, set future learning goals and make connections from one ares of learning to another. It also is shareable so they can further connect to others. #5thchat
A1 - For us, learning portfolios are a collection of learning experiences that include products, reflections, and explanations, along with evidence of learning through questions and assignments. They can be revised perpetually and referred to by other students. #5thchat

A2: Learning portfolios helps them see themselves as a learner. Their patterns, how they learn, the path they took, how they handled a situation or progressed through. This evidence of their learning journey can help them lay the groundwork for future learning. #5thchat
Learning portfolios help students learn by reflection. It's a snapshot of where they are and were and how they are growing as learners. It also helps the teacher to give pertinent feedback to individual students. #5thchat
A2 Using leaning portfolios can help Ss learn by taking time to evaluate & reflect on their work over time. See where started and where have grown. Also can take risks and grown from challenging themselves #5thchat
A2 collection of Ss artifacts (in many different formats) that demonstrates knowledge and growth. I believe they should be a student created collection and something Ss are proud of. #5thChat
A2: We use learning portfolios to help demonstrate students’ growth and allow them to reflect on reading + writing skills! Love seeing their progress from beginning to end of year. #5thchat
A2 - Our ePortfolios require students to slow down & process what they learned, what was important, and why it was important. They need to put into words their learning as a reflection of the activity. Since this takes time and thought, students seem to retain it better. #5thchat
A3: Learning goals, evidence of learning (doesn't have to be mastered, it could document the journey), pieces of work they have as exemplars, moments of reflection, and I would love to incorporate a feedback component for other stakeholders to share their thoughts #5thchat
We have a class website on Weebly where each student has their own ePortfolio that they edit and maintain. I create the assignment and give them the required components and they complete it & revise it based on feedback that I give them.
Example: https://t.co/ZGTBxaEmnY#5thchat
Here is an example of a feedback sheet that I give my students on their ePortfolio posts (we call them blogs). They are required to make the necessary improvements, but can always personalize them, go beyond expectations, etc. This is our evidence of learning in Sci/SS. #5thchat
A3: This is something I want to develop more this year. We currently use ours for notes, model examples, practice, collaboration, and student work. Would love to add goal setting this year! #5thchat
A4:By allowing choice and voice with regards to what might be selected for the portfolio. Communicating the "why" for portfolios. Also, by valuing them within the classroom and allowing time for Ss to work on them. #5thchat
My students do their Goals, Progress Monitoring, and recording of evidence towards these goals on S.M.A.A.R.T.E.R. Goal Sheets that we place into our Leadership binders (since our portfolios are online). Feel free to use my template here: https://t.co/bfVQnOvd8m#5thchat
A4: By making the time for students to have choice + quality reflection, I think students can see the progression of skills making the process meaningful to them. #5thchat
I print out a paper copy for each child & fill it out w/a pen & highlighter (So old-fashioned!). I grade their blogs 2x & give them a report card grade on their blogs "Before Feedback" & "After Feedback" to show parents what their child can do independently & with help. #5thchat

Q 5: I plan on having students refer to their portfolios each day in math to make sure they know what their goal is I found last year students benefited from daily reminders of what they were working towards #5thchat
Here's a video interview I participated in years ago on how I use digital portfolios in the classroom - might be worth your time if interested! #5thchat

A6 best way is to make them digital do Ss, Ts, & Ps can all see easily. They can be seen, shared, and interactive regularly and feedback is powerful. #5thchat
Although we still have 15 minutes left on tonight's #5thchat, please make sure you join us next week as @amysuetish & Alice Keeler co-moderate a super fun topic: "Google Slides" is Magical Rainbow Unicorn Poop!"

A7: My teammate, @MrsKToms
and I have been thinking about using google sites and having each student make their own site.
Would love your thoughts! #5thchat
A7 @juliethorp basically just took my reply 😊 we are wanting to try new things with Google sites to create something that Ss can start in 4th grade and don't to build in 5th, 6th, etc! #5thchat
A lot of our younger grades use Seesaw, but I've used Weebly for 8 years. Not sure if they use the paid or free version??? I know mine is called Weebly Pro for Educators and costs about $65 each year. #5thchat
In reply to
@juliethorp, @weebly, @Seesaw, @googledocs, @Flipgrid
A8: We were recently asked this great question at a conference and we thought of using: screencast, flipgrid, google drawings, recording interviews or bookchats, taking a picture, using Rocketbooks...#5thchat
A8 - My favorite way students record their evidence for their portfolio is through video. They get one-take with no edits and can go as long as they need, correct mistakes they've made, change their mind, etc. Upload to YouTube & embed on portfolio. Others comment. #5thchat
Thanks SO much to @juliethorp for moderating #5thchat tonight! Portfolios are really close to my heart, so thanks for choosing such a great topic! Thanks to all who participated tonight!
If you'd like to moderate an upcoming #5thchat, let me know & I'll schedule you in!
