A1: A learning portfolio is a tool that allows Ss to collect, archive and showcase their work, reflect upon it, set future learning goals and make connections from one ares of learning to another. It also is shareable so they can further connect to others. #5thchat

Hi! I teach 6th grade ELA and my favorite summer activity is being by water! #5thchat ☀️
  • MrsKToms Aug 7 @ 8:07 PM EDT
A1 Learning portfolios are a way to keep track and organize Ss work #5thchat
  • PaulSolarz - Moderator Aug 7 @ 8:08 PM EDT
A1 - For us, learning portfolios are a collection of learning experiences that include products, reflections, and explanations, along with evidence of learning through questions and assignments. They can be revised perpetually and referred to by other students. #5thchat
  • Mrs_Conover Aug 7 @ 8:09 PM EDT
What @juliethorp said! Haha- I also feel like it’s a space students can take risks and show their thinking without worrying about grades. #5thchat

A2: Learning portfolios helps them see themselves as a learner. Their patterns, how they learn, the path they took, how they handled a situation or progressed through. This evidence of their learning journey can help them lay the groundwork for future learning. #5thchat
  • JuliaGalvanSTEM Aug 7 @ 8:15 PM EDT
Learning portfolios help students learn by reflection. It's a snapshot of where they are and were and how they are growing as learners. It also helps the teacher to give pertinent feedback to individual students. #5thchat
  • MrsKToms Aug 7 @ 8:16 PM EDT
A2 Using leaning portfolios can help Ss learn by taking time to evaluate & reflect on their work over time. See where started and where have grown. Also can take risks and grown from challenging themselves #5thchat
  • joannavrteaches Aug 7 @ 8:17 PM EDT
A2 collection of Ss artifacts (in many different formats) that demonstrates knowledge and growth. I believe they should be a student created collection and something Ss are proud of. #5thChat
  • Mrs_Conover Aug 7 @ 8:18 PM EDT
A2: We use learning portfolios to help demonstrate students’ growth and allow them to reflect on reading + writing skills! Love seeing their progress from beginning to end of year. #5thchat
  • juliethorp Aug 7 @ 8:19 PM EDT
  • PaulSolarz - Moderator Aug 7 @ 8:19 PM EDT
A2 - Our ePortfolios require students to slow down & process what they learned, what was important, and why it was important. They need to put into words their learning as a reflection of the activity. Since this takes time and thought, students seem to retain it better. #5thchat
  • juliethorp Aug 7 @ 8:20 PM EDT
A3: Learning goals, evidence of learning (doesn't have to be mastered, it could document the journey), pieces of work they have as exemplars, moments of reflection, and I would love to incorporate a feedback component for other stakeholders to share their thoughts #5thchat
  • juliethorp Aug 7 @ 8:21 PM EDT

  • JuliaGalvanSTEM Aug 7 @ 8:21 PM EDT
A3: so much you could include... some thoughts are notes, their choice of best work, reflections, goals for the week #5thchat
  • MrsKToms Aug 7 @ 8:23 PM EDT
A3 A learning portfolio should have Ss goals, reflections, documentation of their journey during year. #5thchat
  • PaulSolarz - Moderator Aug 7 @ 8:23 PM EDT
We have a class website on Weebly where each student has their own ePortfolio that they edit and maintain. I create the assignment and give them the required components and they complete it & revise it based on feedback that I give them. Example: https://t.co/ZGTBxaEmnY #5thchat
    In reply to @MrsKToms
  • PaulSolarz - Moderator Aug 7 @ 8:25 PM EDT
Here is an example of a feedback sheet that I give my students on their ePortfolio posts (we call them blogs). They are required to make the necessary improvements, but can always personalize them, go beyond expectations, etc. This is our evidence of learning in Sci/SS. #5thchat
  • Mrs_Conover Aug 7 @ 8:25 PM EDT
A3: This is something I want to develop more this year. We currently use ours for notes, model examples, practice, collaboration, and student work. Would love to add goal setting this year! #5thchat

  • juliethorp Aug 7 @ 8:28 PM EDT
A4:By allowing choice and voice with regards to what might be selected for the portfolio. Communicating the "why" for portfolios. Also, by valuing them within the classroom and allowing time for Ss to work on them. #5thchat
  • JuliaGalvanSTEM Aug 7 @ 8:28 PM EDT
Q4 Give them the power and choice to revise #5thchat
  • MrsKToms Aug 7 @ 8:28 PM EDT
A4 I believe voice & choice needs to play a role. When they own their learning Ss tend to work harder and want to work on them #5thchat
  • PaulSolarz - Moderator Aug 7 @ 8:29 PM EDT
My students do their Goals, Progress Monitoring, and recording of evidence towards these goals on S.M.A.A.R.T.E.R. Goal Sheets that we place into our Leadership binders (since our portfolios are online). Feel free to use my template here: https://t.co/bfVQnOvd8m #5thchat
  • Mrs_Conover Aug 7 @ 8:31 PM EDT
A4: By making the time for students to have choice + quality reflection, I think students can see the progression of skills making the process meaningful to them. #5thchat
  • PaulSolarz - Moderator Aug 7 @ 8:31 PM EDT
I print out a paper copy for each child & fill it out w/a pen & highlighter (So old-fashioned!). I grade their blogs 2x & give them a report card grade on their blogs "Before Feedback" & "After Feedback" to show parents what their child can do independently & with help. #5thchat

A5 we need to make it part of our routine weekly so Ss are invested in it. When it's consistent they own their learning and grow from it #5thchat
  • Mrs_Conover Aug 7 @ 8:39 PM EDT
A5: Consistency! Have to use it/add to it frequently so students are comfortable with it as a resource and safe place to put their thoughts. #5thchat

Q 5: I plan on having students refer to their portfolios each day in math to make sure they know what their goal is I found last year students benefited from daily reminders of what they were working towards #5thchat
  • PaulSolarz - Moderator Aug 7 @ 8:40 PM EDT
Here's a video interview I participated in years ago on how I use digital portfolios in the classroom - might be worth your time if interested! #5thchat Link: https://t.co/pSC6aGXB3L
  • MrsKToms Aug 7 @ 8:42 PM EDT
A6 best way is to make them digital do Ss, Ts, & Ps can all see easily. They can be seen, shared, and interactive regularly and feedback is powerful. #5thchat
  • JuliaGalvanSTEM Aug 7 @ 8:44 PM EDT

A7: My teammate, @MrsKToms and I have been thinking about using google sites and having each student make their own site. Would love your thoughts! #5thchat
  • PaulSolarz - Moderator Aug 7 @ 8:49 PM EDT
    I think some great options include @weebly (which I use), @Seesaw, @googledocs, @Flipgrid, and Google Sites. #5thchat
  • MrsKToms Aug 7 @ 8:50 PM EDT
A7 @juliethorp basically just took my reply 😊 we are wanting to try new things with Google sites to create something that Ss can start in 4th grade and don't to build in 5th, 6th, etc! #5thchat

A lot of our younger grades use Seesaw, but I've used Weebly for 8 years. Not sure if they use the paid or free version??? I know mine is called Weebly Pro for Educators and costs about $65 each year. #5thchat

A8: We were recently asked this great question at a conference and we thought of using: screencast, flipgrid, google drawings, recording interviews or bookchats, taking a picture, using Rocketbooks...#5thchat
  • JuliaGalvanSTEM Aug 7 @ 8:56 PM EDT
Q8: They love adding screenshots and videos (usually screencastify) #5thchat
  • PaulSolarz - Moderator Aug 7 @ 8:56 PM EDT
A8 - My favorite way students record their evidence for their portfolio is through video. They get one-take with no edits and can go as long as they need, correct mistakes they've made, change their mind, etc. Upload to YouTube & embed on portfolio. Others comment. #5thchat
