A1 I don't think of inequalities at primary school. I think in terms of secondary school with setting for core subjects, inequalities may have occurred due to the subject knowledge / confidence of teachers taking the different sets but also their expectations of us #UKEdChat
A1. Mainly in PE. Girls did Netball, Hockey and Tennis. Boys did rugby, football and cr cricket. Neither gender did the opposite sport in lessons #UKEdChat
#UKEdChat A2 Started with widening access to courses; offering entry level pathways to courses; recognition of experience in lieu of qualifications; offering blended learning for flexible study/work life; access to creche facilities in communities, ...

I'm not sure. I just remember feeling the person teaching me twice a week had no idea who I was, what I could do and what I thought. It had an impact on my motivation. I'm very aware of that as a teacher now #UKEdChat
#ukedchat At my high school teachers never suggested going to University to anyone but the rich students. I genuinely wasn’t aware it was an option til I got to college.
A2. Widening participation days/events at universities for students who have the ability to attend Uni but may not consider it due to it not being a familiar concept for them i.e they don't have family/family friends who have been to Uni. #ukedchat
A1 I wanted to study Technical Drawing & poss what was called metalwork, but those were only for male students. I managed to avoid Domestic Science at the expense of a second language,
Showing my age - but I carry these memories with me as a reminder we must do better #ukedchat
#UKEdChat Q3
How can we as a profession encourage recruits which reflect the demographic of the wider population?
Pls use the hashtag & A3...

A2. Marking books of disadvantaged students first when you sit down to with your stack of books. These students get feedback from you when you have most energy.

A2 High expectations of all, providing children with lots of experiences in terms of visits and workshops - impact is highly motivated learners with a wider range of experiences. #UKEdChat
A3. In #FE#VET we have the luxury of recruiting professionals for their vocational knowledge and skills so we need to be actively seeking diversity when doing this. It is happening more, but not enough #ukedchat

Inequalityis a tough issue. At what point is it that you pull someone in a certain direction that you are forcing equality? What does genuine equality look like? Surely it is a cultural change. #UKEdChat
A2. Used the #IQM self-audit across an entire school to articulate inclusive practice and identify areas to work on. Achieved the Inclusion Quality Mark - only school in the Isle of Man with Centre of Excellence status. I’m now an IQM assessor https://t.co/VFfyNC8pjQ#UKEdChat
#UkEdChat A3 also consider student recruitment key, Diversity by reducing barriers to education from the application and interview processes onward, not from the classroom onward.

A3. Schools need to be part of their wider community & host events which the community can engage in.This could encourage a wider range of people in the local demographic to consider roles in schools.Unless a parent, many adults have not been in a school since they left #UKedchat

A3 Fortunate to work in a school that has a mix of people apart from the fact we have very few males working in our school. I think it's about welcoming people of all different backgrounds and really believing in equal opportunities #UKEdChat

A4. Hinder. For me single sex schools seem a strange concept when no aspect of life is single sex. There are not single sex employers/companies (that I'm aware of!). Could also be a tendency to teacher stereotypical gender orientated lessons in single sex schools. #UkEdchat

#UKEdChat A4:I don’t have any first hand experience of single sex schools these days but as our society is made up of both sexes then I think to build well balanced rounded individuals then single sex schools are not the way to do it!
A4. Absolutely agree @vicks_marshall - either we are preparing learners for life in 2018 in all its diversity or we are reinforcing artificial barriers and environments on some arbitrary basis #ukedchat

#UKedchat A1: the thing that most sticks with me from Primary is if you were academically able you were fine but if not you were labelled as a no hoper from the start. Kids were shamed for failing too. Like in spelling tests...
A5. Support at home - some parents work shifts to provide financial support and stability which is crucial. However it does mean that sometimes they are not able to support with homework tasks, chat about the school day. I see a difference in the students that have this #UkEdchat

A5 Since the removal of EMA, from #FE the barrier for many is quite simply the inability to attend College due to financial constraints. Often a paying job or the need to stay home due to lack of funds to travel stops participation #UKedchat

A5 I think poverty and income deprivation are factors that need to be thought about carefully. They have a massive impact on students life chances and the options open to them. Social mobility is an issue. #UKEdChat

#UKedchat A5: I think one of the biggest barriers is parents/families that don’t make an effort or don’t value school. When parents don’t talk to their kids, read with them, get them to school on time or listen to them about their day....😥
It's an interesting one. In theory, all students should be able to attend their local school (in their catchment area) & receive a good education. However, this is not necessarily the case & I can understand why parents might want to look at schools outside this area #UkEdchat

A6 I think schools and teachers can help students to see different options. At our sch Yr 6 chn were taken to a local university so they know what it is and what it looks like as many of their parents have not had post 16 education. If we don't, who will? #UKEdChat

@ukedchat, @rachabailey, @Realtimeedu, @vicks_marshall, @EddieMConlon
A6. Absolutely - and we can maybe do this by inviting in role models from deprived backgrounds who have gone on to university or to start successful businesses. We need to reflect a 'yes, you can' attitude, I think #UKedchat

I think providing cultural experiences can help, alongside monetary things like laptop provision. Also aspirational grades as opposed to ks2 predicted grades perhaps? An awareness of Further Education routes too. Just some ideas!

A6. Yes but at the same time finding & promoting opportunities within the area for this mobility. Often when social mobility occurs people leave the area where they are from - therefore you don't get a positive cycle then impacting on the next generation in that area #UkEdchat

#UKEdChat#A6 Absolutely. Work placements, European partnerships. Open doors. Introduce to new options. Even bring in former students to relate their experiences

Very interesting suggestion. If you have a randomly ordered pile of work, are we doing a disservice inadvertently to those students who’ve ended up at the bottom? #UKEdChat
A2. Marking books of disadvantaged students first when you sit down to with your stack of books. These students get feedback from you when you have most energy. #UKEdChat
A7 Many parents have not had post 16 education so we provide visits where parents can come along and learn with their children. This gives them ideas of where they can take their chn in the holidays too. It truly engages the community. #UKEdChat

Possibly. I think that's why we need to make conscious decisions about the order we mark in. We know our students well enough to know who will need more detailed feedback and who will be able to progress with slightly less teacher input. #ukedchat
We go to free places local parks, museums, country parks etc. We had a trip yesterday and from a cohort of 90 children we had 21 parents accompany their children. My head teacher's idea. It's brill. A bit tricky with dwindling budgets, means we have to be more creative! #UKEdChat

#ukedchat A6: In deprived areas this is SO important!
‘Hey, this person lived on the same street as you & they went on to get this degree/run this business’.
Get said ‘person’ in to talk! A person that talks like them, knows what their life is like, could have a huge impact.

A7: our school puts on tea and coffee mornings for parents who need to drop in for a chat, doors are open early for children who have had no breakfast and help with accessing wrap-around care. Children can also be picked up and brought to school if needed #ukedchat
A8. he optimist in me says yes but it's very challenging. It requires a lot of support and motivation to help a large number of people to break the cycles that they and their families are in.There's also the fact that there are factors that individuals can't control. #Ukedchat

#UKEdChat#A8 Cannot see it happening until we get to know the individual learners before they apply, so course applications can be informed and tailored to meet their needs/preferences; that requires time, patience at top and knowledge that funding delayed until completed
