The Breakfast Club – #BFC530 – is a 15 minute, 1 question Twitter chat every weekday. We chat in 4 timezones Mon-Fri – 5:30am Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific Times. The mission of BFC is to empower participants to make a difference in education by engaging in consistent reflective practice in a supportive community that inspires and challenges one another.
It seems like the surest way to have my question used during #bfc530 is for me to not show up! :) I missed another.
I usually planned a fairly easy and fun unit, usually something that involved creative writing and a lot of student choice.
Share something you do to help your students stay focussed during winter months, when we're teaching around holidays, snow days, and other distractions.

Hello! I finally made myself stop checking email before Twitter, so I can check in with my morning friends! I don’t have a great answer for this, other than just doing what I believe is right every day & not being afraid to say when I think something is wrong #BFC530
Perception is reality. We can spend all day looking at the negatives but if we focus on the positives and the possibilities points of view change. #BFC530
I always turn to books that will teach students about stereotypes and children who may be marginalized in our classrooms. These books offer a “safe” opportunity for students to share and discuss feelings. #bfc530
Working with students with special needs, it is sometimes about fighting what they THINK they can't do.... baby steps to more responsibility and more challenging work #bfc530
To challenge stereotypes invite curiosity: Why are grandmother's teeth so sharp and long? To address misconceptions: look for the empty pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. #bfc530
OK, and now I see another question 🥴. Not sure which is the right one! Last answer was about misconceptions...is today about avoiding the distractions? If so, I juts keep teaching. Busy is always best. If you waste time, they get squirrelly. I use every moment #BFC530
I work in a boy's school and I have a lot of experience with girls and womens soccer at a high level. I often talk to my boys about this normalising that women's sport is as relevant and entertaining as mens #bfc530
If it involves kids, talk to them, get to know them as people. If at all possible, find ways to incorporate their interests into your classroom & let them choose how to share—give them a chance to shine. #bfc530#GenuisHour would be perfect for this!
Challenging stereotypes and misconceptions ... by actually talking about them in the classroom. Getting kids thinking about what is driving the stereotype/misconception ... is there any truth to the stereotype... why? #BFC530
Last week we had a documentary screening and Q&A with the director about being an immigrant to Canada and growing up Gay in a Muslim family. Challenges some notions for our diverse student body! #bfc530https://t.co/0xC5X6ZAsm
Same here. We read Number the Stars recently and our conversations about theme were deep and meaningful. Sadly, the synagogue shooting showed us that we've still got work to do. #bfc530

We discussed "What is justice?" yesterday. Our focus was that we should be rewarded or punished (receiving our due) based on what we do as individuals rather than our being lumped into a group society ascribes to us #bfc530
Good morning, are you heading up the roller coaster hill still or on the downward ride before break? (I have a test tomorrow, so Im still being pulled up the hill) #bfc530
I don’t know if this counts but in my classes a wide variety of students become their own social group. Just like band or drama kids. I have film kids. #bfc530
Cold, but good. A little crazy with the holiday coming up. I have been sharing any pics I see of your new babies with the kids. They all want to come and visit! #roadtrip#bfc530
Morning #bfc530
As one of our school's PRIDE advisors, I break the stereotypes by living. I'm a Bi woman married to a man with two kids so it's easy for people to relate to me:) I hang all our flags and never allow any harmful words to un addressed:)

Yes. One my Ss was suspended from my class yesterday for voicing some stereotypes that were very hurtful and racist.
A straight to the office, do not pass go, kind of moment. #bfc530

Working in a private school often means trying to deal with socioeconomic misconceptions. “We all have a lot of money”. Ummm, no. It’s actually a tough one to talk about and deal with. #bfc530

I tey to break sterotypes by tackling them head on. Meet with students, talk with them, listen to them. Most of their feelings are misperceptions. They appreciate the dialogue. #bfc530
But not all stereotypes are false ... maybe blown out of proportion to further a negative agenda ... not necessarily false. Hispanic shoe throwing Mom’s may not be true for everyone but most Hispanic kids have seen it. #bfc530
I think you challenge stereotypes and misconceptions in your school community by providing students with opportunities to connect with others both at your school and beyond. They should also have many opportunities to read, discuss, and debate relevant topics. #bfc530
Our school and district need to be more consistent. We send mixed messages about kids who are still learning/want attention, or first amendment rights sometimes and it boils my blood. #bfc530
And those make for an awkward phone call home as many times the parents will not see what is wrong with the child’s actions. Your kids has racist opinions because you have racist opinions. #bfc530

Good morning! Do you find that certain groups of kids have an easier time mingling among groups or do they tend to stick to their tried-and-true? I’m curious since my career has been in elementary school. #bfc530
I think my class served as a bonding point among the students. I taught 3/4 levels of my class most of my career so time was a factor too. If you spend that much time together, connections are going to be made. #bfc530
This question covers a lot, so there isn't one distinct answer. Here are 3 things that I personally use. 1. It starts with educating those that have ignorance on a topic. 2. You must model in your life how to properly respond to problems. 3. Love the sinner, hate the sin. #bfc530
Every stereotype starts with a truth ... my Mom threw her shoe at me ... she is from Ecuador... this creates a crazy bonding experience with some people who have had similar experiences with their Mom. #bfc530
Just listened—and I am tearing up! Many of us tend to be hyper-critical of ourselves. We need to remember the good we do, whether it’s in the relationships we build with our kids, the fantastic lessons we teach, or our kindness. Thanks, Chuck! #bfc530

Meet stereotypes head on. Discuss whitewashing in textbooks, etc at faculty meetings, understand the lens through which a student sees classroom decorations & activities. Be clear that a 2018 white woman is not a picture of an 1800’ Native American #bfc530
Every stereotype starts with a truth ... “white privilege” is a stereotype ... is there truth to it ... yes ... Spanish people eat beans ... stereotype ... some truth to it ... yes ... how that info is used is important #bfc530
My school is one of the mist diverse schoold in a segregated system (so not that diverse), but i confront stereotypes directly and use as teachable moment.
Luckily topics like affirmative action, voter suppression, 1st Amendment rights, civil rights are in content.

We have those tough conversations immediately after any comments seeming condescending towards groups outside our community. We also at times did restorative circles which serve as a great tool to use for this. #bfc530
