Eric Justin Bates Band/Choir/Humanities Oklahoma Union Schools. My favorite professional book is The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership by John Maxwell. #oklaed
Favorite professional book? Since I taught English, I can take a pretty wide berth with this one. I just started re-reading Wise Blood by Flannery O'Connor today, and I'm loving it! #oklaed
Greetings from MA #oklaed! Popping in briefly as I finish preparing for my Ts to start back tomorrow. So many favorites, but definitely love @donalynbooks and her Reading in the Wild book. Can't wait for her new one coming out soon...
I believe we are on the doorstep of changing the tide in Oklahoma public education. Political advocacy is the newest and best buzz word. Tuesday is a day to vote and advocate for our kids. Joy is our girl. Please put her on the ballot in November. @joy4ok#oklaEd
Anne Beck, lucky to work w/ the people @OSSBAoklahoma Remembering @SenJohnMcCain tonight! The first big vote I cast as an adult. True American hero and will be greatly missed! #oklaed
I was a proficient reader, but not an avid reader or lover of reading. It wasn't until 4th grade, my teacher, and two books that turned me on to reading.. #OkLaED#leadlap#leadlit
A1: In first grade I was reading so much and didn't fit in the different color groups so thankfully Mr. Page did the best thing...he sent me to the library...I spent most of the year there! #oklaed#booklove#leadlit

A1. I wasn't an avid reader in school. But I have tried to be more deliberative in spending time reading as I get older. Right now reading a leadership book. #oklaed
A1: I was totally a compliant reader. I don’t think I ever truly embraced reading for pleasure until adulthood. Books weren’t always accessible for me and we were always mandated on WHAT we had to read. I’m so glad to see philosophy changing! #bookwhisperer#OKLAED
A1: I've always been an avid reader. Mostly weird stuff, but my HS English Teacher Ron Springfield was AWESOME!! He encouraged me to read what ever I found fascinating and introduced me to some cool stuff too! #oklaED
A1: I was a pretty voracious reader...still am...it’s why I really want to focus on developing that love of reading in kids...it has opened so many doors and connected me with some amazing people! #OklaEd
A1: Voracious - I read ALL. THE. TIME. Thankful for my APUSH teacher who let me escape in her class after my father died and let me read during lunch and before school in her room. #oklaed
A1. I was the type reader that checked out the next 5 books from the series I was reading from the library every week. My mom hid my books so I’d practice the piano. 🤓#oklaed
A1 I was always an avid reader -- of what I wanted to read. I once nearly flunked a reading class because I hated the "choices" we were given. I read the whole time though... #OklaEd#thebookwhisperer
A1: I enjoyed reading but didn’t like the books my HS English teacher made us read. Would have enjoyed more self selected reading. Didn’t feel like the class was even considered when selecting books. #oklaed it shouldn’t be that way.
A1: I stayed up with current events. I read the local and state paper everyday, SI every chance I could. My elementary librarian got me hooked on “Sooners Illustrated”. #oklaed
A1 I hated reading! Mrs Hamburger at Nance Elementary @CPSRedTornadoes was the first T I was able@to connect with. She at least got me to like vocal tests. It was a step in the right direction! #oklaed
A1: I enjoyed reading but didn’t like the books my HS English teacher made us read. Would have enjoyed more self selected reading. Didn’t feel like the class was even considered when selecting books. #oklaed it shouldn’t be that way.
A1: I was a voracious reader in school. We only got to go to the very small school library 1x/wk, but my mom took me 2 the public library, too, where I would get the max # of 📚 every time. S/O to her, actually. She is a T & has always had an extensive classroom library. #oklaEd
A2: Oddly enough, as I ended up being an ELA teacher, I was not a voracious reader in school. I enjoyed it and it was something that I did, but it was not my personal escape. #oklaed
My AP English teacher gave us two free reads a semester it was her way of telling us to give her a chance then she would reciprocate. I loved that. #oklaed
A1) I was not an avid reader in school. Read the beginning, middle, and end to do book reports. It wasn't until adulthood that I began reading for pleasure. #oklaed
A1: Shout out to Ms. Weber, my 1st grade teacher (imagine Carol Burnett as a teacher). She totally instilled a love of reading. She #BlessedTheBook#oklaed
A1 I hated reading! Mrs Hamburger at Nance Elementary @CPSRedTornadoes was the first T I was able to connect with. She at least got me to like vocab tests. It was a step in the right direction! #oklaed
Exactly the same for me... what book changed that for you? For me, Teach Like a Pirate and Book Whisperer were my game changers
#OkLaED#leadlap#leadlit
A1: I've always enjoyed reading and could almost always be found with a book in my hand. Shoutout to my sister @jess11790 for teaching me to read so young. You set me up for a lifetime love of learning! #OklaEd
#oklaed A1: I liked to read mystery books written by Agatha Christie. I liked to piece the evidence together and solve the crime. I guess that's why I like to watch Criminal Minds. Mrs. Retz and Mrs. Betty Crow were my two teachers.
A2: The more you read the better your vocabulary and the more experiences you can have without ever leaving. There is so much to discover!!! Every subject needs to be able to encourage that passion and share the journey!! #oklaED
A2 Ss who read will be able to learn anything and will be better able to make informed critical decisions as life-long learners. They'll be ahead of the game both in their personal lives -- and at work. #OklaEd
a1) I read any books I was told that I could not.. Stephen King, Go ask Alice!, Diary of Anne Frank, Huck Finn.. Ban it and it was in my backpack. #oklaed
A1: the doodler. I couldn't retain or enjoy reading unless I was taking notes and doodling in the margins keeping my hand busy and mind engaged with the book. Some things never change.
#Oklaed
A2- Literacy is the most essential foundation for everything a person needs to get ahead in life. We should be reading in every classroom regardless of content area or grade level. #oklaed
A2: In addition to the comprehension benefits and student outcomes, it can also build stamina and create a unified front on the importance of literacy across the board within a building. #OklaEd
A1 - I read everything I could. I credit my 3rd and 4th grade teacher Mrs. Banks for this. She had a classroom library full of biographies about Presidents. I read most of them 3 or 4 times.
Oh and I credit the Pizza Hut BookIt reward system.
#oklaed#MDubLearns
A1: Brigit Minden HS math Central High. I have tons of books on my "to-read" list and in my Amazon cart. Now just need to get busy actually reading them!#oklaed
A2. Looking at reading in classes besides English can help those reluctant readers see how literacy applies in classes they DO like. I’m an English teacher, but I get it. It’s not for everybody. #oklaed
A2: I really believe that reading deeply leads to thinking deeply. And too much of what our kids read is shallow it is the movie not the book. We need them to think, to analyze, to synthesize everything not just in ELA. #oklaed
A2 because reading opens up the world. We don't all have the opportunities to travel the world but we can through text. Besides, isn't it fascinating how arranging 26 letters in different orders can bring you to tears or make you laugh out loud? #OklaEd
A2: Let’s be real, not all my kinder babies get excited when I say we are doing “reading” but they all get excited about something every single day. What if I didn’t incorporate reading into everything?! They wouldn’t get it that day! #oklaed
A2: because w/reading you can’t say I’ll never use this again after I graduate. You will use it daily. And not only do you need to read, you need to comprehend. It empowers you. In reading we grow, we travel, we become the characters. #oklaed
A2: Reading gives students a window into the world around them. Isn’t that what education is all about? Learning about the world and the best ways to engage it? Also, it is culturally responsive to engage in storytelling. Stories are a way that Ss can engage the content. #oklaEd
A2) What would any course look like where literacy was deemphasized? At some point it will be the elephant in the room. The elephant crushing your Ss because they can’t succeed without it. #oklaed
A2 Reading, as with all subjects should not be taught in isolation...guide Ss to see it’s usefulness and the way it connects to other subjects. #OkLaED
A2: Reading is an essential skill, of course, and is vitally important. Literacy however has been underrated in my opinion, and we are reaping the consequences. We must teach Ss to understand & break down what they consume. #oklaed
I’m not sure. I read a couple who-done-its by dan Brown. (Digital fortress and deception point) I was hooked and now I love it. I hadn’t really tried since high school. And was made to read in college. I suppose it was self-selection ;-)#oklaed
#oklaed A2: Reading and literacy doesn't stop at the English class door. Ss need to make connections between subjects, to understand that reading and literacy is required in careers, and to help build stronger literacy skills.
Reading can be a mirror so we can see a reflection of ourselves or a window to see how we compare to others. It can also be a doorway into new worlds and different eras -- past and future. #oklaed
A2) Students are able to discover a purpose for something and try to understand why the author has something to say. Reading creates thinkers; reading creates a safe out-of-the -box experience. #oklaed
A2: Reading, like music, engages your brain in ways that challenge your thinking...you discover so many new and challenging ways of thinking. And thinking is something we need more people doing. #oklaed
Finally finding genres that were interesting and/or topics that were interesting. I love professional reading, Christian reading, and YA dystopian. #oklaed
A3: read to them, read with such expression they hang on every word (I love finding the funniest or saddest books), time for reading every day, choice in reading, model reading (I read 4 pleasure in front of them). #oklaed
A-2 Reading should be taught across all grade levels and content areas because the vocabulary unique to that discipline is necessary to understanding the concepts being taught. #oklaed
A3 #oklaed Share with them what you're reading and why. Ask them why they like or don't like the things they're reading. Illustrate that what we read involves choices and then give them agency to make their own.
A national pro school choice group is backing candidates in Oklahoma who opposed the tax increases from March that went to fund teacher pay raises (they are also opposing Oklahoma teachers seeking office) #oklaed#okpolhttps://t.co/VwraP5aqag
A3: use big words and post about whatever I'm reading that is particularly on that fleek. They can check out my Goodreads and see just how Lit I get.
#Oklaed
A2 Reading empowers learners and emboldens dreams. It deepens empathy and creates “connection” with other people, worlds, and possibilities. There are no limits to what a reader can learn. #oklaed#LeadLit
I overheard one of our 4th grade T’s having a great conversation about a book the boy had read. Talk to them about the book instead of just assigning a book report or test. They want to explain all the exciting things they learned. #oklaed
A3. I go read to them, we have some walls up in some of our schools encouraging reading w several of us behind a book letting the students guess who we are, I know we can do a lot more. #oklaed
A3: Totally stealing from my buds @GustafsonBrad and @TechNinjaTodd, we created “What We Are Reading” posters customized for each teacher and staff member from our custodian to our cafeteria manager...including me too!! #OklaEd
A3: Modeling it myself! Bedtime Facebook live stories, read alouds, and this year I’m running a lunch book group! It’s become the absolute highlight of my week- just me, 20 kiddos, and #MsBixbysLastDay#kidsdeserveit#oklaed
A3: Uhmmm read! I read whenever I can. There are books on science stuff all over my room. I assign book reports in my AP class. We discuss english content that relates to science content. We read, I ask them what they read, we read some more! #oklaED
A3 - I talk to them about what I am reading. I tweet and blog about what I am reading. I read along with them when we start looking at primary and secondary sources. #oklaed#MDubLearns
A3 I set aside time for independent reading in class, I read with my Ss, I talk about reading with them, and I post about my reading (and writing) here and on other social media platforms. #OklaEd
A3 i make sure i read with enthusiasm! I make sure they understand that with text comes tone and the tone with which you read can make the difference between engagement and boredom #OklaEd
I STILL read aloud to classes any chance I get. I'm teaching 7th English and reading Pax to them. Then Love it! When I taught HS, I read aloud. Just love sharing books! #oklaed
A3: Walk around with book in your hand. Whether in the classroom, hallways, or cafegymatorium - make it a priority to bless a book; the students will want that book.
#oklaed
Q1 #oklaed Shirley Campbell, our school librarian in my tiny town. She let me check out any book I wanted. The bookmobile (ask your parents) came to town with loads of new finds.
A3: we have book talks about the books they’re reading. They have to try to sell it to other students or not. We have book tastings. The book they’re reading is so cross curricular. It can be tied into all subjects. Care about what they’re reading. Let them discuss it. #oklaed
#oklaed A3: Show them the books that I have read or are reading, give them time in class to read, show them how I make connections between what I have read, have them give me book recommendations, & show how I respond to what I have read like discussing it or writing poetry.
A3) I let other people answer that question for me. I send parents a 4 question survey. 1 question is "Why/How is reading/writing important in your job?" Throughout the year I share answers when it applies to our objectives. #oklaed
A3: I love reading, and I have a huge classroom library. We read a poem every day to start class and I’m proud that so many of those poetry books are falling apart from being checked out. #oklaed
A3: I read aloud to my students daily! I use stories to teach reading, of course, but if there is a story that explains a concept, historical event, life principle, etc., I’ll use it. I often read to them in the mornings and afternoons. It’s our favorite time of day! #oklaEd
A2 Reading, as with all subjects should not be taught in isolation...guide Ss to see it’s usefulness and the way it connects to other subjects. #OkLaED
Based on research I've done this summer, I am being more intentional this year about reading aloud some of our harder texts and parts of our whole class novels. This will make the texts more accessible to everyone. #oklaed
A3) I let other people answer that question for me. I send parents a 4 question survey. 1 question is "Why/How is reading/writing important in your job?" Throughout the year I share answers when it applies to our objectives. #oklaed
A3“What I’m reading now and next” posters next to all classrooms and office doors! The Ss love asking questions and hearing about our fav reads. #oklaed
A1: i read everything when i was a kid! i'm pretty sure every teacher i had since prek gave me more books to read or let me read ahead since i was so voracious. but credit for that has to go to my parents who read me soooo many books ever since i was a little baby! #oklaed
A3: also, a good classroom library catered to your kids. Scholastic dollar books are my bff. I get my kids books as gifts. Last year we did lunch bunch book clubs. My students read a book together then we met & just talked about it. No assignment. Love. #oklaed
A3: We give Birthday Books as a gift on student and staff birthdays. It shows that reading is a gift and is valued and important enough to honor on such a special day for them #OkLaED#leadlap#leadlit
We seriously all sit on top of our desk or table and discuss the books we are reading. It’s so chill.. like we are all just friends at a coffee shop. These are my favorite moments. #oklaed
A2: because when you get to college every subject area you are expected to read. because i have seen a kid who wasn't interested in reading find the science books we had and he TOOK OFF. reading is embedded in everything we do. it should be in all subjects too! #oklaed
Listen to the way some people speak, read aloud, or present (even those in leadership roles)...literacy/grammar matters, folks! #oklaed#leadLIT#speakEnglish
A3) ...latching on. I read to my students; I read with my students; I read in front of my students; I give advice for a better reading experience; outside of lessons, students can choose what they want to read; I have one-on-one discussions with each student most weeks. #oklaed
A4 - I do it quite a bit at the beginning of the year with my AP History Ss. I read along with them to show them how to draw things out of source material. We have to teach and model that skill for them to grasp it. #oklaed#MDubLearns
A4 I haven't spent much time reading aloud to my HS Ss in the past, but am being more intentional about doing so this year. I think this will make complex texts more accessible to all Ss. #oklaed
A3 I like it when I see door signs in schools that have the teacher's name, where they went to college, & what book they are reading right no. Great way to make a schoolwide focus on reading visible. I think this is a best practice from a program focused on college prep #OklaEd
A4: I'm a story teller! I love to spin a tale. I don't read to my students nearly often enough but when I do, it's full of exclamation and passion and voices...Gotta make it fun for both of us! #oklaED
A4: At least to each class one time per month with principal read alouds, but I also LOVE to read at lunch and with small lunch bunch groups of kids. I also enjoy reading one on one with kids in the hallway and getting to know them as readers #OkLaED#leadlap#leadlit
A4. I like to at least read the first few pages of long texts aloud to help students get the meter and sound of the narrator’s voice into their heads. #oklaed
A3: As a principal when I observed a class reading a play, I’d volunteer for a part. Love to read aloud with really bad British accent...or deep southern drawls :) #oklaed
A2) Higher level understanding of material in any content area involves comprehension. If a child cannot read well, it is difficult for them to make connections. #oklaED
A3: reading aloud to them for sure! being excited to read books. i'm pretty sure every book i read i tell the kids it's my fav. i also try to let them see me reading for info and for pleasure. my fav thing to do is just chill with them during reading time and read. #oklaed
A4. Not near enough, TIME and my crazy train schedule! I just sat down recently to block off more time to be w the kids. I need to work w our teachers to find more times I can come in and read. Thanks for the conviction ? :) #oklaed
Friend! Awkward side hug for being here! I agree, there are no limits....that's why we, as leaders, need to constantly encourage reading for enjoyment and knowledge-seeking. #oklaed
A4: When you read with a child, consider making it memorable by providing them an "I read with the principal" certificate! Easy and effective way to promote the importance of reading #OkLaED#leadlap#leadlit
A3: as an administrator, I join the read aloud sessions and read with them in the classrooms (Popcorn reading, Peppercorn reading). I want to do more to encourage and model in classrooms. #Oklaed
A4: I read aloud to my students every. Single. Day. Sometimes twice! I love to model reading with expression, proper pausing, etc. how else will they learn? We do novel studies. Take a break from the curriculum and teach the skills from the novel. #oklaed
A4: i read aloud every day. it's embedded in our CKLA curriculum and i love that about it. i also try to do read alouds of books i have that help me teach social skills or help the kids work through emotions. #oklaed
A4) I don't have a class so I don't read to Ss often. My reading is generally limited to reading their texts aloud to them when they've gotten in trouble for online/texting misbehavior. They don't like hearing what they've written. Lol. Very effective, but not on topic. #oklaed
#oklaed A4: Any Shakespearean plays, poetry, and special scenes from novels or short stories are read aloud or acted out by me or Ss. Sometimes, Ss have to get up and move around while they read so that they understand what's going on.
A3) Discuss with them high-interest books and material at their level along with highlighting interesting points about something I’m reading. I get excited when we connect over something we’ve read, so hopefully that excitement is passed along as well. #oklaED
A4 As a technology director I definitely don't get to do this very often. But maybe offering myself up to our elementary teachers as a "guest reader" would be doable... It's certainly something I love doing! #OklaEd
A4: My ELA Ss always loved to be read to and to read aloud in class. It helped them digest the material and gain a better feeling for inflection and intonation. #oklaed
A5: Put books EVERYWHERE! In the foyer, by the restrooms above the water fountain, in the cafeteria, in the office, in a bathtub! EVERYWHERE #OkLaED#leadlap#leadlit
A5 Visitors to my class will see my classroom library, posters Ss have created about their books hanging on the walls, Ss reading, me reading... #oklaed
A5 - I have a classroom library full of books about history and quite a few classic novels as well. I always have what I am currently reading out on my desk. I am going to start posting some type of "Currently Reading" list outside my door. #oklaed#MDubLearns
I love hanging out at Barnes and Noble in the children’s books. There are so many powerful picture books. It’s what I collect now. I buy them and read them to my students. I love discussing the message. So so necessary. #oklaed always include picture books!
A4) As an admin, I encourage this frequently. I also take advantage of any opportunity possible to come read in classrooms at my building. Time hinders me to do it more often. #oklaED
A5: ...my library is literally the center of our classroom. Shelves of books, couch & chairs. In the center. And I display books all around the room on stands. And many many books! Our school also gives books to families at school functions. #oklaed
A5: #allthebooks#allofthem also comfy spots for students to read those books. also also plenty of options for them to CHOOSE the book they read. also also also all that writing we've done about our reading. #oklaed#thirdgradegeeks
A5) words everywhere, a classroom library, weekly reading folders, reading strategy folders, listening to reading, watching students engaged in silent or oral reading, my reputation for what I expect from reading... #oklaed
A5 i have quotes and posters all over the room and text books everywhere. There's a sign that says "never stop learning" as kids enter my room. #OklaEd
A5. Books available and easily accessible by students. A comfortable area to sit and read. Tables and chairs set up to facilitate conversation about literature. #oklaed
A5: Parents seeing it in schools is important; but taking the literacy invitation/push home is essential. Partner with home for reading success.
#oklaed
A5. Bulletin Boards and pictures on the walls of various people around the school and district reading. Many schools have reading challenges and our librarians do a great job of keeping reading visual. Reading across subjects and grade levels is important. #oklaed
A5) Our superstar librarian @shehopper who is also a professional photographer took pics of every teacher with their favorite book. Awesome backgrounds + giant prints in frames adorn the hallways outside our rooms. #oklaed
A5 #oklaed Going back to when I was in the classroom, I had shelves and shelves of books for students to choose - and binders full of their book reviews. I gave them free reign to make reading recommendations to their peers.
A5: In my classroom, there is a fairly large library, with books sorted by subject, and several comfy spots that are perfect for curling up with a good book. #oklaEd
A5 #oklaed Going back to when I was in the classroom, I had shelves and shelves of books for students to choose - and binders full of their book reviews. I gave them free reign to make reading recommendations to their peers.
A5 One thing that I love is they will see all of our birthday students choosing a special book to take home and having their picture taken. 📷 🎈 #oklaed
I agree! It can be more challenging, but I know you will pick the best books for your kids because you'll build relationships and learn their interests. You're always inspiring, Jess. #oklaed
A5: we also do home reading. It’s my students only “homework”. They take a book every night. I tell parents upfront it’s not even about reading the book perfectly but all about building a reading HABIT. #oklaed
A5 Here are a few ways we promote reading (including a new idea for 2018-2019). Our team tries to integrate reading into all aspects of the learning experience. #oklaed#LeadLIT#GWreads
A5: on meet the teacher night I have a sign up for parents to be a mystery reader. They would show up on their date and time to read to my class. The students wouldn’t know. I try to keep parents very involved. So they would see a very inclusive environment. #oklaed
A5) Across the school, student products highlighting their understanding and comprehension of material across subjects. Teacher products as well which include Thor favorite books, authors, etc. #oklaED
A4: just the busy pace of school typically interferes, but so worth it when you make the time to get there. Sometimes I would read in the media center or just go into classrooms so they see me reading! #oklaed
Have you thought of scheduling it? I'm going to use a google doc to let teachers sign up for times they want me to come read to their class. This is going to help me be more intentional in reading to all classes on a regular basis. #oklaed
A6 We have formal independent reading for the majority of the hour every Friday. I also expect Ss to read independently whenever they finish the class assignment, or we have extra time in class. I also make a point to give them time to discuss their books. #OklaEd
A6: We are, for the 1st time, doing a One School/One Book event with the help of @readtothem
All students and staff will get a copy of Lemonade Wars and do a read aloud and be encouraged to read it at home as well... Can't wait #OkLaED#leadlap#leadlit Idea from @MrWawczak
A6: always 30 minutes a day set aside for this. Some days we get up to an hour. And then we do more with lunch bunch book clubs, projects, etc.
#oklaed
I know some Ts have independent reading time for 10-20 min per day, but this is frustrating for Ss who lose themselves in a book -- just in time to have to put it down to do something else. #oklaed
A6: My goal is 2 sessions that are about 15 minutes a piece. I’m teaching a new(ish) grade level this year and using totally new curriculum so I’m still getting into the swing of things. #oklaEd
A6: Unfortunately not nearly enough time. AP Biology seldom allows for free reading time and my other science classes we focus more on doing than sitting, but I'd like to incorporate more reading. It's my new classroom goal #oklaed
A6) New to my bldg this year...encouraging our Ts to share what they are reading with Ss. Have a book that I'm encouraging our Ts to read. Will encourage our librarian to have reading events. Got her some $ to update her reading choices. #oklaed
A6: It is hard when you have only 50 minutes for 6 class period. But whenever we are on a novel or chapter I try to incorporate some time to read in class. #oklaed
A6) As a middle school teacher, I have developed and practiced independent reading practices on Fridays for years. I converse with each student (146) on Fridays about their individual reading goals and their books. #oklaed
A6: every morning they get 30min of self selected reading. and then the little points throughout the day when they are working independently they can be reading whatever they want. i love our technology that gives them so many books at their fingertips too! #oklaed
My library is always a choice during centers! We also have a special time everyday where we all to read to self. Right now we make it last about 5 minutes on a really good day. By the end of the year we will be at 20 minutes! Those kinder babies can do it y’all! #oklaed
Q5: Last week I was in the Owasso 7rh grade Center and many teachers had made “Read” posters of themselves with favorite books and placed them throughout the halls #oklaed
#oklaed A5: I would say the hallway & classroom show it. have books on shelves that are organized by interests & career choices, there is a word wall in the hallway, and reading posters in the room.
#OklaEd Arrving late as well, @joy4ok ... But unlike you, I’m just watching the Q&A from our couch. Being older than dirt (you’ll remember: born so long ago, dirt was still clear, not dirty yet!), there’s no way I could follow this chat AND walk the dog at the same time!!!
A6) 10min of our 55min is independent reading of a self-selected text. But Flashlight Friday is where the real magic happens, when they can get in a good reading flow and just enjoy. https://t.co/Y1FnAeHLpq#oklaed
A6 During election years, we choose a few books and all classes read and vote for their favorite. When the school winner is determined, each class gets a copy and we celebrate w/ activities. 🇱🇷#oklaed
#oklaed A7: Independent reading is on Fridays. Ss can read or write that hour. At the end of the hour, we discuss in a group about what was read. I also tell them that when they finish a test to find a book or magazine to read while they wait for everyone else to finish.
A6: Once a week (Mondays) @NeaVikings participates in drop everything and read, (D.E.A.R.)During their Leadership classes 6-12. Self selected titles, with a Reflection sheet at the end of the session. Completed reflection sheets are turned in & part of a drawing later #oklaed
A6: it’s part of our reading block. Whole group, independent reading. According to my schedule it’s 30 minutes a day blocked off. It’s much more. Early finishers? read.
Come in from specials? Read until we get started.
Basically any down time is spent reading. #oklaed
A7: We have an Academic Letter Jacket celebration to honor our Veterans, outstanding alumni, and Academic rockstars. Might be an opportunity to incorporate Literacy as well...Reading contest winners etc. Just a thought. #oklaed
Ohhhh I will be pondering this one and invite some super star staff to help me think of something! We have tons of opportunities! Stayed tuned we will come up w something soon! #oklaed
A5 cont...: In my office at CCOSA, I have some of my favorite children’s books on the shelves. Some were gifts from my students and hold special memories. #oklaed
A7: the birthday book is a great idea. Even letting the birthday kid pick a book/bring a beloved book for read aloud that day. Could also be your student of the day if you do that. #oklaed
A7) Our library media specialist, Christy Manhart, offers prizes for AR points like Sonic drinks, lunches, special recognition, and books for prizes. #oklaed
My grandmother instilled in me a love for reading starting with Highlights. I read for pleasure nightly and reading is a singularly critical part of my professional life. Our students must have this skill to succeed. #oklaed
Choose any book/short story/poem and rewrite the ending to include a celebration...what happens if Romeo and Juliet hadn't killed themselves? What would happen if the Moneky's Paw had granted only happy wishes? Rewrite for fun! #oklaed
A7: For birthday celebrations this year, I have students write down positive character traits that the S embodies. I then make a wordle and frame it for the S. I get to define traits in a real-world context. Then when we describe characters, they have a reference point. #oklaEd
#oklaed A6: We have a class celebration for the Big Idea that Ss will be reading and writing about for the semester. Ss have to create something using technology that reveals their idea, and they give a speech for two minutes about their ideas.
A7) Community service ops like reading to the elementary Ss or going to a Senior Citizen Center to read to them are great ways to encourage reading and service. #oklaed Got me thinking!
I struggle with this too because I hate being read to. I try to do read alongs and have them read some too and use it to teach how to read historical documents. But I try to balance this. #oklaed
A7 I like the idea of adding books to our celebrations...BUT books are also celebrated! On Friday’s we have fun activities or story related snacks to celebrate our reading! #OklaEd
Love this idea! Last year, our sophomores created children's books that modernized a short story they'd read. Then Ss read it to our 3rd and 5th graders. Looking forward to doing this again! #oklaed
Downloaded this while listening to the author at @OSSBAoklahoma conference yesterday and can’t wait to dive in. Great to hear from a visionary who has impacted so many. #oklaed
A8) Create a hashtag that encourages learning/reading. Share insights from what you've read on it. Share pics of Ss/Ts reading/learning. #oklaed#tuttleEDU
A8: I think a book study with a group chat discussion might be a great idea. My kids would gladly share their thoughts online with a gif or review #oklaed
A8 I love the idea of #booksnaps promoted by @TaraMartinEDU. Blend @Snapchat & other social media with reading & I think some of our older Ss will get on board. #oklaed
Hope everyone heard the shoutout for this chat we got today during #yourvotecounts today on @NEWS9 by Rep @jonechols🍎 who’s joined us many times! #oklaed
#oklaed A8: Since we need to build connections, have Ss do a Google Hangout with an author or someone who relates to their career choices, have Ss tweet questions to famous people, have them create a Google Site about books, or have them create pages for characters.
A8. I’ve found that nothing kills a social media platform faster than adults trying to be hip with it. However, I have had kids talk through how characters would present themselves on SM to make them more relatable. #oklaed
A9: do author studies, and extend that and maybe Skype with the author. Send newsletters home saying what you’re reading or suggest to read. Make bulletin boards with titles of amazing books in the hallway. #oklaed
A8: I want to incorporate book talks into our OAESP Midwinter Conference on Feb.1, 2019. Our theme this year is literacy and Michael Haggen from Scholastic will be our keynote. #oklaed
A9: I include books I’m reading in my @SmorePages to staff and to parents. I’ve shared booktalks with all classes on the 1st day, and this is at my office door: #oklaed#leadlit
A9) At my last school our librarian @PCWLibrary created laminated signs so Ts/As could post what we were reading outside our doors. Plan to steal this and use it at my new school. #oklaed
#OklaEd A8: With the likely “truth stretching” on social media especially, choose a topic, find ‘significant’ posts, read and test for fake news by seeking corroboration!
A9: I like to go the passive-aggressive route and jam books into colleagues mailboxes or casually drop a book on a students desk while walking by and don't make eye contact. Just keep walking.
#Oklaed
A9: our reading as a class drives us to find out EVERYTHING we can about that subject so i like involving everyone in that process. asking admin's opinions when they come in, sending home letters to parents, asking our librarian for extra books. #oklaed
#oklaed A9: Share videos, book talks, blogs, newsletters, give a book critique, or create a Google Site. It's all about promoting ideas all over social media.
Thank you, #oklaed crew, for LITerally, an amazing chat! Share a book & promote LITeracy this week! And thank you again to my friend, @mandyeellis for joining the chat tonight! #oklaed#leadLIT
