Welcome #G2Great friends. We're so grateful you're joining us tonight for this important topic. Unfortunately I just boarded a flight so I’m ROBO Mary with PRE tweets until wifi kicks in. For now, sending hugs to all from 14,000 feet and will peruse your wisdom later ❤️
Welcome,
#G2Great friends!
I'm so excited for us all to talk about the topic tonight.
How do you define expertise, experts and research?
Little did we know how
HOT, HOT, HOT
this topic would be!
@DrMaryHoward@hayhurst3@brennanamy
A1 There are NON experts at every turn, ready to tout their wares for the first unsuspecting sucker. The ONLY protection we have against them is our knowledge of research. #G2Great
A1. Criteria provides a framework for decision-making that embraces one's values, knowledge, & experiences consistently, fairly, and judiciously as possible to best serve the needs of our students over the course of our careers.
#g2great
Hello #G2great friends. Messed up flights tonight. Just arrived at the airport but have only 10 minutes before the next flight boards. Just wanted to soak in a few minutes as REAL Mary before Robo Mary takes over again ❤️
A1: at the risk of sounding too grad school nerdish, criteria is important to increase external validity. You want research that is generalizable so that others can benefit from the findings. #g2great
A1. Criteria provides a framework for decision-making that embraces one's values, knowledge, & experiences consistently, fairly, and judiciously as possible to best serve the needs of our students over the course of our careers.
#g2great
A1 Sadly, it's not unusual for companies to cite excellent research but then take an unethical leap backwards. It’s OUR responsibility to listen not only for who/ what but how it’s being used for sales vs. the greater good. #G2Great
A1 We have to begin with what we know and what we know has to be rooted in what really works. For example, thinking about interest in reading: Cultivating individual interests Fostering situational Interest in the classroom Selecting texts w/interest-enhancing elements #G2Great
A1 Criteria allows you to search out what is valid and what is promotional. Products need to sell, so you must be able to determine what is grounded in theory. #g2great
A1: The current phonics articles are a good example. How unfortunate that creating fear and distrust can be mistaken for research and expertise.#G2Great
A1 Without a criteria to support a solid knowledge base you may be lured into grabbing on to false-promises, flashy materials, and the loudest voice. #g2great
I normally say hello to everyone who enters our #G2Great door (until I can no longer keep up that is). Since I’m rushing between flights and missed that, here’s a big ol’ collective welcome. Welcome friends!
A1. You need to also read the actual research study. What test was used? Was it perhaps a test of nonsense words and that’s the criteria for saying that “reading scores have skyrocketed”?? Be a savvy research consumer #g2great
A1: The current phonics articles are a good example. How unfortunate that creating fear and distrust can be mistaken for research and expertise.#G2Great
A2 Certainly name recognition. I trust those with a track record like Richard Allington, Peter Johnston, P David Pearson & others. It’s important to have a circle of experts we can depend on. #G2Great
A2. Docs/Books/Online -
Author's Credibility: Who are they? T, S, Admin, P? Worked as T? Works w/ Ss? Knowledge Base? Works with whom? Date of publication? Publisher? Sources cited? Data basis? Reasonable? Outlier? Groundbreaking?
#G2Great
A2. People - CREDIBLE? Have they been teachers? Have they worked with the age of students being discussed? Experience, Knowledge, Memberships, Evidence of Life-Long Learning. Who do they work collaboratively with? Present at Conferences? Online presence?
#G2Great
And those are everywhere you turn these days. Social media and the internet have opened up a whole new can of fake research worms (wording intentional). #G2great
A2: I like talking with/learning from people with all different types of experience & expertise, but I ALWAYS appreciate someone who spent years in the CR and can offer some practicality along with ideas. #G2Great
A2: Peer-review is key. I also like to see what previous research is cited in texts or articles. If known scholars are referenced it lends more credibility. #G2Great
A1 There are NON experts at every turn, ready to tout their wares for the first unsuspecting sucker. The ONLY protection we have against them is our knowledge of research. #G2Great
A2 To me, a literacy expert reads research to inform their practice. They try new ideas and carefully collect their results. There are many literacy experts here tonight. It's a blend of learning throuh reseach and practice. #G2Great
A2 Certainly name recognition. I trust those with a track record like Richard Allington, Peter Johnston, P David Pearson & others. It’s important to have a circle of experts we can depend on. #G2Great
A2 Certainly name recognition. I trust those with a track record like Richard Allington, Peter Johnston, P David Pearson & others. It’s important to have a circle of experts we can depend on. #G2Great
A2: when people like @DrMaryHoward don’t refer to themselves as experts I am always weary of those who wear the title like a badge. I learn from enthusiastic learners. Do not tell me because you are an expert. Demonstrate what you do and let me come to that conclusion #G2great
A1 As much as we'd like to think we have a heart, intellect, and "gut feelings" for knowing what's best for kids, we are woefully in need of sound research thoughtfully undertaken by experts in the field of education. #g2great
#G2great@franmcveigh Excellent as always Fran. I am here side by side with Lindsay and my principal!! We are teaching my principal. We are so excited!!
A2. People - CREDIBLE? Have they been teachers? Have they worked with the age of students being discussed? Experience, Knowledge, Memberships, Evidence of Life-Long Learning. Who do they work collaboratively with? Present at Conferences? Online presence?
#G2Great
A2 When reading research, I always think about whether the research has a financial agenda. There are so many amazing trustworthy experts AND there are wolves in sheep’s clothing ready to pounce. Know the difference! #G2Great
A2: I read book reviews of literacy text, consult with other teachers about articles, books they’ve used and listen to their feedbacks of what worked/didn’t work.Criteria: consider the needs of students and research (reaching out to prof., other teachers) #G2Great#LitBankStreet
A2: when people like @DrMaryHoward don’t refer to themselves as experts I am always weary of those who wear the title like a badge. I learn from enthusiastic learners. Do not tell me because you are an expert. Demonstrate what you do and let me come to that conclusion #G2great
A2: When I read an professional article or book, I look to see who is cited. I’ve developed a list of shoulders I stand on. If I see none of those names, I look at those who are listed. I asked myself, “Are they trustworth?”#G2Great
A2. #G2great. I squirm when people tout new practices or ideas as their own. If they don’t mention whose shoulders they stand on, I’m bothered. Even if it is good practice. Give credit to those who did the research.
A2. People - CREDIBLE? Have they been teachers? Have they worked with the age of students being discussed? Experience, Knowledge, Memberships, Evidence of Life-Long Learning. Who do they work collaboratively with? Present at Conferences? Online presence?
#G2Great
Yes- those who are always looking to learn and looking to share in these kinds of experiences. (nothing like a shared learning adrenaline rush) #g2great

A1. Criteria provides a framework for decision-making that embraces one's values, knowledge, & experiences consistently, fairly, and judiciously as possible to best serve the needs of our students over the course of our careers.
#g2great
A2 Our knowledge allows us to understand what research means in practice. We can’t read research that values read aloud but use it to justify a 250-page Teachers Pay Teachers Unit. We have a responsibility as good consumers #G2Great
If I see "Reading Recovery trained" I often trust the source. Who can argue with Marie Clay's work based on grounded theory? I usually trust research done by independent sources who don't stand to profit from the results. #g2great
A2: When I read an professional article or book, I look to see who is cited. I’ve developed a list of shoulders I stand on. If I see none of those names, I look at those who are listed. I asked myself, “Are they trustworthy?”#G2Great
A2 - some people may be becoming experts, but are not quite there yet. If they cite and give credit to those I trust as experts, then I can begin to trust them as well. #G2Great
Yes- those who are always looking to learn and looking to share in these kinds of experiences. (nothing like a shared learning adrenaline rush) #g2great
A2 For me, an expert is someone who is involved in the scientific research that follows the agreed upon guidelines of the field. Others who know the research are knowledgeable, but the researchers are the experts, to me. #g2great
A3 SO MANY: Just for starters Richard Allington, P David Pearson, Peter Johnson, Kylene Beers/Bob Probst, Ellin Keene, Stephanie Harvey/Annie Ward, Regie Routman. #G2Great
A3: All teachers of reading should own the Handbook of Research on Reading Comprehension. And obviously, my book Think Big with Think Alouds @CorwinPress#G2Great
A3: oh where do I start. My ultimate 3 as far as impacting my teaching have been @KyleneBeers@donalynbooks and @KellyGToGo but beyond them @DrMaryHoward is my north star and there are so many others. They are special because they are teachers #G2great
A3: I'm still scratching my head over this one, and maybe this is the chat to bring it up... https://t.co/Mybv43n7gb#G2Great Research can support whatever our side may be.
A3: oh where do I start. My ultimate 3 as far as impacting my teaching have been @KyleneBeers@donalynbooks and @KellyGToGo but beyond them @DrMaryHoward is my north star and there are so many others. They are special because they are teachers #G2great
There are so many must reads! Choice Words, Who's Doing the Work, Literacy Essentials, anything by Katie Wood Ray, Regie Routman, Ralph Fletcher, Ellin Oliver Keene and so many others! #g2great
A3: classics like Don Murray and Graves, Louise Rosenblatt (they’re often cited in contemporary texts) Beers & Probst, anything by Ralph Fletcher, Ellen Keene, Kelly Gallagher, Penny Kittle #G2Great
A2 Here's a little humor thrown in tonight--my dad used to say "I like that guy/gal they're sound--they agree with me." When I read educational research, the things I look for are peer-review, other citations, zero financial gain and the validity/alignment to other work #g2great
#G2Great friends they just called my flight. I’m so sorry but I should probably get on. Thank you for inspiring me with even a short visit with wonderful and ever so brilliant friends ❤️❤️❤️
A4: To establish trustworthiness, I start at the back and inspect their references. If they are citing the experts, I don't buy what they're selling! #G2Great
A3 One thing I DON’T want in an author is a grab bag of lesson plans & activities. I want application rooted in a foundation of research. We don’t need more THINGS, we need to understand how/when to refute things. #G2Great

A3 If you want to know who/what to trust, read Allington’s Big Brother and the National Reading Curriculum: How Ideology Trumped Evidence. So many products cite the 2000 NRP study, but it can’t be trusted. #g2great
A3 NCTE & ILA conferences are key to my body of knowledge. I can’t know it all (in fact sometimes I feel as if the pot is barely filling) but I can make it my life’s work to be a life-long learner - forever seeking new understandings. #G2Great
A3 Hi all! I’m jumping in late tonight! My must-read is @FletcherRalph Guy Write and Joy Write! He is a voice of reason for student-centered practice! These two books have had a huge impact on my practice as a writing teacher #g2great
I want a professional text to stretch my thinking, provide layers of thinking to peel back over time, and ultimately inform my actions in some way. #g2great
#G2great The Donald’s (Graves and Murray) and L. Caulkins, Newkirk, F&P, Marie Clay, Katie Wood Ray, those at the front end of the wave. These authors did not package up literacy in a neat little box. It’s complex and that’s the truth.
#G2Great@LitBankStreet A1: I define "literacy experts" as researchers that trusted professionals in the field of education widely seem to agree have conducted legitimate studies. However, even these experts can and should at times be subject to questioning and criticism!
A3 Strategies that Work and Reading with Meaning were pivotal books in my early career. Comprehension instruction matters! Later books that helped so much were Notice and Note ( both volumes), and Disruptive Thinking. #g2great
A4. Criteria - 10 Things - @NellDuke
No TpT, no Pinterest, no Google
see https://t.co/fkexiqJHkO
Check source of article-not a summary. Peer Review? All way back to original.
Remember that T makes the biggest difference. How is T using research as a guide/not dictator? #G2Great
A4 We can avoid having a research knee jerk reaction based solely on one study or author. We need to find other research that can support or contradict that singular research. #G2Great
A3: Tammy from eastern Iowa, 4th year coach, just 3rd year with writing workshop. Titles I go back to--Already Ready, Boy Writers, and Heart Maps! #g2great
It's not so much WHAT professional reading we do as it is THAT we all DO professional reading for ourselves. We've got to be in charge of our own reading lives! #g2great
A3 - It's also important to recognize the experts within our schools and boards who may not be published, but are experts due to experience and share their expertise in mtgs and daily conversations. My TL (@deedeeverlinde) in Reading Rec. is one of my main go-to experts #G2Great
I get that - we need to beware of confirmation bias... but there’s also something to be said for writes who speak to our teaching hearts. Sometimes it just resonates so well with your own experience and practice that you trust it more! #g2great
A3: I've fallen in love with Jan Richardson and Next Steps Forward in Guided Reading. The Scholastic resources and video are efficient and no nonsense. Kids and teachers understand behaviors to teach and reinforce. #g2great
The thing I love about professional texts, is they are like little pockets of coaching and relationship with the great mentors who wrote them. #g2great
A4: Writing research frustrates me. So much is experiential or observational. It's not so much based on control groups or clinical research and I'm not saying I know how it could be. It's just hard to find actual RESEARCH of why ____ is important in writing instruction. #g2great
A4: I think reading the research & deciding how best it works with your Ss each year. If it’s stood the test of time or I can see the benefits to kids, it’s worth investing in. #G2Great
#G2Great@LitBankStreet If we don't have a specific criteria to support a solid knowledge base to validate our trust in experts, we are just arguing about our opinions dressed up as "philosophies"; we owe it to our kids to do more than just this.
A4 Both quantitative & qualitative play a role so we need this variety. The National Reading Panel used a very narrow body of research so we didn’t get the whole picture (ie: independent reading). #G2Great
A5: A trigger word for me is SBRR! Remember when publishers slapped stickers on basals under Reading First to say everything was Scientifically Based Reading Research! To me, that's like claiming there are vitamins in a box of Cocoa Puffs! #G2Great
A4 For me the research has to extend and relate to what I see happening in the classroom. I know kids are more motivated when they have some control over their learning - Agency - Peter Johnston. #G2Great
The one exception I would have for this is The Reading Strategies Book and The Writing Strategie Book. Those are such good reference volumes for meeting the needs of kids in small groups and conferences. #g2great
#G2Great#LitBankStreet Brilliant Imperfection by Eli Clare! It changed my entire perspective on developmentally varied children and individuals and makes me feel much more capable of working with these individuals and their families in a meaningful way.
A4 Don’t assume that just because you see a respected name cited that it’s being used in ethical ways. I’m astounded how many companies ask us to buy their research dribble. We have to be smarter than that. #G2Great
A5. saying "Research-Based"
Check for amount & materials Ss read, write, speak, listen. NOT worksheets/workbooks! Learning NOT cuteness factor! Don't just take author's names. Look at construction of resources. 10 R & W resources for 1 student is WRONG!
#G2Great
#G2Great@LitBankStreet A2: If we don't have a specific criteria to support a solid knowledge base to validate our trust in experts, we are just arguing about our opinions dressed up as "philosophies"; we owe it to our kids to do more than just this.
A4: texts, like conversations and in-person learning, are guides and sources of inspiration. All ideas are molded, tweaked, and changed around the students. (Start with students... then use knowledge of ideas & strats to find ways to support, bolster, invigorate, etc) #G2Great
A5 Maybe we should start by assuming that anyone asking us to write a check could very well be unethical. That means we have to look at it inside out and upside down and be good consumers. #G2Great
We can’t really be professional alone...we need to live within a community of smart, thoughtful others to check our ideas against to refine and grow our thinking.#G2Great
Research for teaching decisions needs to: be current, contain a large sample size, be peer-reviewed, be in the format of a research document (🙄), have been done by a researcher! #g2great
A5 Any publisher that says they have a comprehensive, researched based program to meet all learners’ needs is stretching the truth. Every program/resource has an Achilles heel! #g2great
A5: Are they just throwing out names to make the program look better or do they quote/cite actual research. Anything that screams one size fits all or is heavy on meaningless worksheets packaged as assessments is a no. #G2Great
A5 Fidelity. I do not have fidelity for program, I have it for my students. @drgravityg in her book, Mindsets & Moves raised a point that these are written by teachers who don't know your students. That must have been the seed for her book, Teach Like Yourself. #G2Great
Q6: We need to treat ourselves as professionals by holding ourselves - and our colleagues - up to reading the original books / research / resources (not the TPT version with cute font! #G2Great
A5 We must acknowledge that if the person making the financial gain is the person citing the research, there is a real possibility that we can’t trust the product. BUYER BEWARE #G2Great
Minnesota educators continue to grapple with one of the most critical — and politicized — education issues: reading instruction | MinnPost #g2great 🙈🙈🙈 https://t.co/1PQOfZ0BuG
A5 Trigger words: guaranteed; ___% gain; trusted (if they need to tell us it’s trusted it may well not be), time saver/fast (which usually means diminishing return) #G2Great
A6 Read professional resources routinely. Develop a prof library.
Consult with "experts" you trust. Read & study w/ a "skeptical" stance. "Prove it!" Work collaboratively to research validity of materials. Ask on Twitter/FB?
#G2Great
A6 We have to be smarter than they are. There is a top selling TPT product that puts on a child marriage for a union of letters/sounds (I kid you not). Are we really foolish enough to think that has one iota of merit? Use your brain! #G2Great
Q6: We need to treat ourselves as professionals by holding ourselves - and our colleagues - up to reading the original books / research / resources (not the TPT version with cute font! #G2Great
A6: Have a series of questions that accompanies whatever we are using with students. Begin with: How does this resource meet learning needs of students? (And not because of its pretty font or cute picture.) #g2great
I may be late, but I have a lot to say about this. Easier doesn’t mean better. We need to use the research to guide our thinking, and listen to our students. #G2Great
A6 I think the hardest part of this is when our colleagues are jumping on board with something that isn’t backed by meaningful research. It feels like we shouldn’t be the only ones not on the train! #g2great
A5 Literacy is complex. If it wasn’t, all the kids in the world would be passing high-stakes tests. If you take the time to find (and read) the research, you will find that all the new “solutions” aren’t really new. It does show that knowledgeable Ts get good results. #g2great
Many communities have a distrust of "research". "Research" has been used as the implement/ideology for any number of atrocities:
Tuskeegee https://t.co/Eqbnyq2Yhz
J. Marion Sims https://t.co/xLlEDtJYWj
One question I always ask is, "whose agenda does this advance?" #G2Great
A6 Literacy is complex. If it wasn’t, all the kids in the world would be passing high-stakes tests. If you take the time to find (and read) the research, you will find that all the new “solutions” aren’t really new. It does show that knowledgeable Ts get good results. #g2great
A6 We have a responsibility to say HELL NO to any time-wasting nonsense. We need far less grab & go and far more questioning if it’s worthy of our kids. They’re the driving force of ALL decision making. #G2Great
A7: When we view research in isolation, we teach skills in isolation. Remember that each subskill is woven together for a larger 'braid of literacy' #G2Great
A6: teaching isn’t suppose to be easy. The products that promise to simplify it are like those weight loss pills that don’t really work. Promises but likely just give you gas 🤢 #g2great
A6 Literacy is complex. If it wasn’t, all the kids in the world would be passing high-stakes tests. If you take the time to find (and read) the research, you will find that all the new “solutions” aren’t really new. It does show that knowledgeable Ts get good results. #g2great
A7: When we view research in isolation, we teach skills in isolation. Remember that each subskill is woven together for a larger 'braid of literacy' #G2Great
A6 The most critical practice for me is aligning resources/practices with my own "why" statement. Why do I do what I do? If the resource/practice are out of alignment, I know it's not something I'll choose for my scholars. #g2greathttps://t.co/cqJd6Awkbv
A7 NRP divorced R and W. They do not operate in isolation. NRP also mandated 90 min. uninterrupted R - Bitterness & silly responses! R & W for real purposes.
Literacy across the day to make sure that more than 50% of day is Literacy Based. (Pressley-Effective Ts)
#G2Great
A7 The ultimate goal of learning is always transfer. When we just check off a list of five things and blindly subject kids to isolated skill and drill, we aren’t doing them a favor. #G2Great
A7: I'm always worried when something has to do with mandates. Flexibility matters, and mandates don't allow for professional judgement and the flexibility to do what's best for student engagement and learning. #g2great
A resource that has elements that allow us to be responsive to our Ss needs (like progressions) and aren’t written in a lock-step manner, where students drive the direction of the learning, is one worth looking into. #G2great
Q6. We have to continue to spend money on training teachers so they can make these decisions with a critical lens. You can’t know what you don’t know. #G2Great
A7 The ultimate goal of learning is always transfer. When we just check off a list of five things and blindly subject kids to isolated skill and drill, we aren’t doing them a favor. #G2Great
A7: One of the biggest problems with the five pillars was that rather than the four being a means to an end: comprehension, each had its own end: fast, sounds in speech, accuracy, knowing lots of words. #G2Great
A6 The most critical practice for me is aligning resources/practices with my own "why" statement. Why do I do what I do? If the resource/practice are out of alignment, I know it's not something I'll choose for my scholars. #g2greathttps://t.co/cqJd6Awkbv
A7 When we teach in isolation, we give kids a very warped view of what reading is really all about. It’s not about a list of skills, but how each works in tandem to promote meaningful reading. #G2Great
Tests, learning and understanding . . . Worlds apart. Reading cannot be measured in a multiple choice test. Those tests have nothing to do with constructing meaning.
#G2Great
A7 I’m not sure we’ll ever recover from the NRP pillars. We know this was an epic fail in educational history and yet we still buy a pillar in a box without even thinking about the implications (and dangers) #G2Great
A7: One of the biggest problems with the five pillars was that rather than the four being a means to an end: comprehension, each had its own end: fast, sounds in speech, accuracy, knowing lots of words. #G2Great
A8 Start from your 1st day of teaching & don’t stop until the last day. We are learners throughout our entire careers. It's the gift we offer our kids in order to be the teacher each of them so richly deserves! #G2Great
Q6. We have to continue to spend money on training teachers so they can make these decisions with a critical lens. You can’t know what you don’t know. #G2Great
A8: build a classroom library based on student interest, incorporate literature that you’re interested in, build your own professional resource library, communicate/ask other educators for resources. Share, share, share #g2great#LitBankStreet
A8 The only way you can arm yourself against the snake oil salesmen that are lurking at every turn is to shield yourself with knowledge. Our kid don’t need professional suckers. They need a knowledgeable teacher! #G2Great
A7 The NRP evaluated results of phonics instruction with a comprehension-dependent tool. Ts need to become readers of research so when we see something like that, we can know for ourselves that it isn’t valid. Knowledgeable Ts get good results. #g2great
A8 Never stop learning! Read, collaborate, listen to your students. Have a desire to continuously outgrow your thinking. Good can always become great! #g2great
Had a blast watching my students complete a Zombie Escape Room for Halloween. A great way to revise & learn some English language skills. Amazing to see some incredible collaboration between kids! We had so much fun.
#bekindEDU#KidsDeserveIt#tlap#LeadLAP#eduAR#g2great#t2t
A8: Pay attention to the students in front of you. A script is not going to give you best practice. Neither is a cute chart on TpT or Pinterest. YOUR understanding of the learning needs combined with knowledge of processes will lead to learning. #g2great
A8: build a classroom library based on student interest, incorporate literature that you’re interested in, build your own professional resource library, communicate/ask other educators for resources. Share, share, share #g2great#LitBankStreet
A8 Find your professional posse in your school and on social media. You do not have to be alone and play follow the shallow leader. Surround yourself with knowledge seekers. It’s your gift to this profession and to our kids! #G2Great
A8 New teachers need to listen carefully to what is being said about literacy, read articles/prof texts, attend PD, and analyze student data. There is so much info out there on literacy but you have to be able to judge what is proven research and why it's imp. #G2Great
