Q1: The Power of Potential: As educators, there is always room for growth. What would you identify as your biggest potential growth area? Why or why not? #OhEdChat
Q1: The Power of Potential: As educators, there is always room for growth. What would you identify as your biggest potential growth area? Why or why not? #OhEdChat
A1; as a young AP everything. You dont know what you dont know. I probably ask too many questions but I want to do the job right to best serve my kids and families.
#OhEdChat
A1: The largest area I have for growth is in the physical and mental transitions I ask students to make. If I clean this up, I free time up for more learning!
#ohedchat
A1: since I am still a student myself, I certainly have a lot of room to grow. I think the best thing I can do for my future students now is understand the populations I will be working with so that I know how to best serve them. #ohedchat#barbersclass@barbersclass
A1: My biggest growing area is blended learning. I feel like I have fallen behind on this over the past few years. In an evolving arena, we must always keep learning! #ohedchat
Lauren, thanks for your candor. I have faced this too and have found that leaning into it as a guaranteed thing has helped me, at least some.. #OhEdChat
A1: My greatest growth area is probably in taking education policy and transferring that into daily practice--getting a better understanding of what it looks like, sounds like in practice and then helping fellow educators better understand it. #ohedchat
A1: 1. Developing lessons that accommodate ELL students. Increase in numbers. 2. Using proven reading and writing strategies to help improve literacy. Grade level literacy rates decreasing. #ohedchat
A1: Making every lesson/unit/learning plan as dynamic as my major exhibits. I get so excited about our exhibit nights that I go all out w/ the concepts & the Ss shine w/ their creativity b/c they had the freedom to choose HOW to represent their learning. #ohedchat
I love your response here. Even though I have been in the classroom for a few years, I still find such great value in the WHY and reflecting on WHO my students are and HOW I can reach them... #OhEdChat
A1: As a student in their Freshman year, I definitely need to work on understanding educational law and policy and being able to bring that into the classroom. #ohedchat#barbersclass
A1 my colleagues and I have been exploring all things PBL. It has been a learning experience for me. I learn best when I am out of my comfort zone. #ohedchat
If we don't ask questions, we spend a lot of time trying to figure out the answers, sometimes from sources or in ways that don't provide accurate information. Being willing to ask questions also models that for our students. #ohedchat
A1 my goal for this year was to make sure I was meaningfully using tech, not just tech for tech. Figuring out the pedagogy/learning and then match the tech! #ohedchat
A1 - I need to continue to push myself slightly beyond my comfort zone. Being an introvert, I find it difficult at times to meet and talk to new people. I constantly remind myself to talk to new people and sometimes I fall short. #ohedchat
You have my complete attention here Jaime. I love the potential for what can come out of an experience when we (the educators) can... Powerful! #OhEdChat
Are there specific groups decreasing? ELL students (generally) require very different, explicit instruction to accommodate their language differences. Similarly, SWDs may require varied interventions to approach grade level. Happy to brainstorm with you! #ohedchat
Q2: The Power of your Philosophy: Thinking about your practice as an educator, how would you describe your philosophy of teaching/coaching/leading? #OhEdChat
Understanding education law and policy will always be something to continue learning--and I know that can be a "good news/bad news" kind of thing as you start your education career! #ohedchat
Physical: Going from lecture to groupwork involves students moving. I can improve by making the locations of each group explicit and consistent over time
Mental: getting minds ready for the task. I can improve my modeling and explaining what I am thinking & enforcing it
#OhEdChat
This is a hard thing, I agree since ELL students are not all operating on the same level. I think about some of the (in my opinion) best lessons I have taught...and I think they were off script...#OhEdChat
We’ve worked hard to adapt our curriculum to Google Classroom and enable student-lead activities and projects (blogging, assessments, interactive learning). Still very much learning with them. Would love any recommendations anyone might have! #ohedchat
A2: Love this question! I think educators should think much more about this than we do.
Philosophy: My content is intrinsically interesting. I should always challenge my students w/ the content. I should always care for them. I should base my practices on research
#ohedchat
A2) I'm late #ohedchat! My philosophy is to just try it! Try something new because maybe it won't work, but if it does, it could be awesome. And if it doesn't, it will put you on a better path.
A2 - the #goldenrule Treat others as I want to be treated. Model appropriate behaviors. Lead by example. Support my colleagues as much as I can. And always do what’s best for students, including down to the students individual student. #ohedchat
Q2: The Power of your Philosophy: Thinking about your practice as an educator, how would you describe your philosophy of teaching/coaching/leading? #OhEdChat
A2: Management: A mix between Dreikurs (Democratic Principles/Management) & Kounin (Keep Ss engaged). Pedagogy: emphasis on empathy, tolerance, and primary sources. #ohedchat
A2: As a future SLP I will always try to match my students current abilities first and then give the tools to grow rather than go into a therapy session expecting the student to be ready to for something they're not yet #ohedchat#barbersclass@barbersclass
A2: I think, what would I want my own kids to learn? How would I want them to feel? 3 years ago I had the challenge/privilege to teach my middle child. Her expectation to learn was silent but persistent & made me realize that Ss want to learn but are quiet in their hopes #ohedchat
A2: As I am developing my philosophy throughout school, I find that a lot of it is centered around building relationships and making students feel important and capable. #ohedchat#barbersclass
I'll have to admit that this year even I have seen time lost in my class when transitioning...it's challenging at best, especially with the younger ones. #OhEdChat
A2 my philosophy is rooted in progressive education. I also believe that the primary role of ed in 4th industrial revolution should be to cultivate every child’s creative capacities. #ohedchat
A2 - Not so much a philosophy, but my main focus is to teach kids stuff. What can I do to make this process as efficient and effective as possible?
#OhEdChat
A2: My philosophy is to come alongside learners and facilitate learning. I want to help students learn and grow, and that requires meeting them where they are and then guiding and supporting their growth. #ohedchat
I LOVE the idea myself, and always wonder if there is only one setup for this...I think the power really is making work for WHO is in your room.. #OhEdChat
A2 - the #goldenrule Treat others as I want to be treated. Model appropriate behaviors. Lead by example. Support my colleagues as much as I can. And always do what’s best for students, including down to the students individual student. #ohedchat
A2- as a leader who works with adults - MY thoughts are rooted in supporting where teachers are at and encouraging to take one step forward. Then another when ready #OhEdChat EdTech Coaching in Today’s Classrooms https://t.co/16mlgJU83a
Sorry, finally getting back into #ohedchat,
A2) My philosophy is that we need to build relationships first and let the rest of "education" follow. If we are true to ourselves and students, the rest will take care of itself.
I love the question Dave Burgess asks: "If students had a choice of whether or not to attend your class, what would they choose?" I often think of that. #ohedchat
A2: Management: A mix between Dreikurs (Democratic Principles/Management) & Kounin (Keep Ss engaged). Pedagogy: emphasis on empathy, tolerance, and primary sources. #ohedchat
Q3: The Power of Perseverance: It could be said that teaching/coaching does not come without challenges. Consider a challenge that you have had to persevere through. What would you say to someone else who might be experiencing the same thing? #OhEdChat
A2. Late to the chat! Often describe myself as both progressivist & existentialist. I feel strongly about shaping the whole child and building more than just the academics of Ss. #ohedchat
A2: As I am developing my philosophy throughout school, I find that a lot of it is centered around building relationships and making students feel important and capable. #ohedchat#barbersclass
A3: A key idea shared with me a couple of years ago is this: sometimes our impact starts in small ways. Resistance is evidence of impact--if someone is pushing back against something I've shared, it means it's pushing on their thinking or practice in some way. #ohedchat
A3: Be professional even when superiors/equals are not. Be professional in disagreements, even when you are in the right and they are in the wrong.
It is nice to get along and like everyone you work with/for but it is not absolutely necessary.
#ohedchat
I think that's where the POWER is too Robert. The POWER of trying and tweaking things! The sandbox. The playground...seeing what works and what doesn't! #OhEdChat
A3: I observed an SLP and witnessed one of her challenges. She wanted to put the use of CC in the students IEP but the parent did not want this. Working with parents can be tricky as both are trying to advocate for the child from different perspectives #ohedchat@barbersclass
A3: I was diagnosed with cancer when I was a freshman in college. I would encourage other people/family members that are diagnosed to stay positive and seek out positive words from friends and family. Relationships are crucial. #ohedchat
A3) Trying/Challenging times are tough and we may never see results or hear about our impact but it doesn't mean that impact isn't happening years down the road #ohedchat
A3 I used to get frustrated when a new tech didn't work the first time or I "failed" in front of my Ss or Ts. IT IS OKAY TO FAIL. It makes it less scary for everyone else who is new at it #ohedchat
A3 surround yourself w/5 positive people who you can go on a journey with. @shawnachor talks about how our brains perceive mountains less steep when we are with others. Collective potential can be more powerful than individual. #ohedchat
I love the question Dave Burgess asks: "If students had a choice of whether or not to attend your class, what would they choose?" I often think of that. #ohedchat
A3) This too shall pass.
As a coach, teacher, principal, parent....whatever seems like the biggest issue right now, will be a distant memory. Sometimes because another fire has just taken it's place 🤷🏽♀️ but at least it's a new fire 😉
#ohedchat
A3- listen! Sometimes a question turns into a challenge because you try to solve the wrong issue. Listen. Reflect. Ask if you heard the question right. Then work on suggestions or solutions #OhEdChat
A2: my philosophy is one that not all kids learn the same so I cant be the same to help them learn. If I'm not fighting for them and trying to be better for kids than im not doing my job.
#OhEdChat
In situations like this, it helps to remember we're all there with the same goal in mind: caring for and supporting a child. It can help reframe a disagreement--it's not a battle, just two different ideas for how to do that. #ohedchat
Q3: The Power of Perseverance: It could be said that teaching/coaching does not come without challenges. Consider a challenge that you have had to persevere through. What would you say to someone else who might be experiencing the same thing? #OhEdChat
I like this. Resistance can be helpful as long as both parties are willing to continue to engage in good faith.
We can use someone's resistance as a way to guide discussions. #ohedchat
Oh my gosh I love existentialism! And I firmly agree that we are talking about a whole that has parts rather than parts that are not whole... #OhEdChat
#ohedchat A3. We work hard to integrate coding into introductory STEM courses in a simple/fun way, but many students still have "code anxiety" that mirrors math anxiety. We spend a lot time developing youtube videos is to combat code axiety in both teachers and students.
A3: The current situation will pass and you will be made stronger for it. In the moment, something may seem terrible, but years from now, you will not remember the trying events. #ohedchat
Q4: The Power of your Words: Thinking about your practice as an educator, how would you describe the power of words (things you say, things you don’t say) and the impact it has had on your mind, your environment, you and/or your students? #OhEdChat
A3: Be patient and stay focused. Anchor your work in your values and beliefs. Act from your heart and your mind. Find affirmation in your true friends. #ohedchat
A3 - I have a daughter with Level 3 #autism (Severe) and I have learned perseverance through her. In addition, my compassion and understanding for parents who have challenging children has grown tremendously. Therefore, I choose to be kind to everyone. #ohedchat
A3. Life is about seasons at the end each season we usually come out stronger. We have to fight through and think about what the end result might look like. #ohedchat
A4: Words are so important. I always refer to students as “friend” or “brother/sister.” Never hesitate to remind them that you believe in them, appreciate them, or care about them. I try to do this daily. Words matter, always. #ohedchat
A3: I've had the unfortunate experience of an unstable admin, who after that semester was dismissed. Thanks to the local union, I was supported and made it through it, but not without severe distrust of female leadership that I'm still overcoming. #ohedchat
#ohedchat A5. There are a growing number of online resources but there aren't necessarily a growing number of assessment tools, and often the assessments that exist have poorly drawn figures, etc. We often make our own assessments for computational thinking and physics/physsci
A3 (cont.): Advice would be to advocate for the student's needs to the best of your ability but learn to give and take with the parents who know the student outside of the classroom. #ohedchat#barbersclass@barbersclass
A4:I can definitely say from experience that things that teachers say are so important and can stick with kids for years! I remember a math teacher telling me that I must not have cared about the class because I got a certain test question wrong, I still think about it! #ohedchat
A4: I use my words more carefully now than I did when I started teaching. I found it much more productive to talk with students 1 v. 1 than talking to them in front of their peers. Also, the power of "wait time" between your words is the real deal. #ohedchat
A4 - as an administrator, I try to let everyone I work with voice their opinions and thoughts before I do. I have found that when I talk first some of the other people quit talking. As leaders we sometimes need to speak less so others can say more. #ohedchat
A3- listen! Sometimes a question turns into a challenge because you try to solve the wrong issue. Listen. Reflect. Ask if you heard the question right. Then work on suggestions or solutions #OhEdChat
A4: Based on so much of the reading/learning I've done, I now focus my feedback on process and effort. I do that as a mom, too. "What a great problem-solving strategy!" #ohedchat
A4: Words are everything! Speech delays/disorders can be majorly decrease confidence. Using constant encouragement and phrasing room for improvement in positive ways can go a long way. #ohedchat#barbersclass@barbersclass
A4) I like to think of myself as pretty efficient with my tasks and words. Sometimes it takes shooting the breeze at the Keurig or hanging out in the hallways to be really effective. Casual words can have an impact on the important ones.
#ohedchat
A3: Some of our greatest accomplishments occur following our desire and determination to persevere. Remember your why, and who you serve and the lessons you both will learn from your efforts. Stay focused. Listen. Grow. #ohedchat
A4: Words matter. I focus on the "academics" because I am a teacher. I want students to learn as much as possible so I use the vocab and make students use it.
I also communicate care via my tone in lessons to create a safe environment that is focused on learning.
#ohedchat
Wow Jaime. First, let me say kudos to you for hanging in there. It is not easy to do what we do without support. Second, keep persisting. There is so much in YOU for this kind of challenge. #ThePowerofYOU#OhEdChat
Q5: The Power of Learning: Thinking about your practice as an educator, would you agree that learning is a perpetual process for you? Why or why not? How has/would indefinite learning influenced your practice? #OhEdChat
A2 Everything is about culture: 1) Students will love learning if teachers love learning 2) Hire great people and give them freedom to be awesome #ohedchat
A4 we need creative minds. So much of what adults say/do tends to stifle a child’s creative capacities. Creative minds tend to be marginalized in schools. We like creative products to make halls “look nice” but we fail to encourage the creative process of every child #ohedchat
Q4: The Power of your Words: Thinking about your practice as an educator, how would you describe the power of words (things you say, things you don’t say) and the impact it has had on your mind, your environment, you and/or your students? #OhEdChat
A5: Just in my Freshman year I can already tell that I will never know everything there is to know about education, it changes all the time! That doesn't mean I can't keeping trying to know everything ;)#ohedchat
A5 100% I am ALWAYS learning! I always try to push myself to learn new things. It could be through my Twitter #PLN, conferences(anyone else going to #ISTE19??), coworkers or even Ss! #ohedchat
A5 - I am always learning. One thing we have done this year is provide some of our teachers with time and structure to do instructional rounds based off our instructional model and the discussions that come from rounds are GOLD. #ohedchat
A3. Life is about seasons at the end each season we usually come out stronger. We have to fight through and think about what the end result might look like. #ohedchat
A5: the world is full of information and with the internet web endless ability to research and learn more. I'm like a walking bag of useless facts.
What this all boils down to is you use it or lose it. I like learning so I do it.
#ohedchat
A5: There is ALWAYS something new to learn. If we expect our Ss to learn something new we should be challenging ourselves to do just the same, whether that be related to our career or just a hobby! #ohedchat#barbersclass@barbersclass
A5: we work in a field that changes constantly. Why shouldn’t we be lifelong learners? We must evolve and learn, not be complacent. Put down that textbook! #OhEdChat
A5: I am always learning, try to model that for those around me, whether it's researching which car to buy or discovering a new author to love. #ohedchat
A5: Perpetual learning is integral to good teaching. I have improved as a teacher by increasing my content knowledge by reading free textbooks from @OpenStax.
I have improved my pedagogical knowledge via blogs from @RetrieveLearn and @AceThatTest#ohedchat
A4 our words have so much power. Simply saying girls and boys can create so many problems in class from reinforcing there are only two sexes to misidentifying the gender our SS may identify as. #ohedchat
Definitely, times such as a bad result from students on an assessment, to talking about going through a loss of a brother. I have cried, I have laughed, I have been everywhere so not to hide from my students. #ohedchat
#ohedchat A5 You'll never learn a subject so well as when you have to teach it. The "modeling" approach to pedagogy is really built around getting kids to teach each other because of how true this is.
A5: Students, technology, policy, schools, etc., are always changing. We must always strive to learn something new, otherwise we become complacent in our same ways. Teaching is not a specific formula. It is ever changing. #ohedchat
A4: Words are life, or death, depending on how we use them. I have always been outspoken and I struggle fitting into an environment which prefers ambiguity to truth. Perhaps being on the spectrum causes me to prefer truth over feelings. But I'm improving...day by day. #ohedchat
I hear that Justin. It's great when we can step back, literally or metaphorically and give pause to consider the potential outcome of our words first. #OhEdChat
A5: Learning can be a perpetual process if you have that drive/desire to get better & have a growth mindset. Indefinite learning has helped me get out of my teaching bubble & try new strategies (gamification, social activism/empathy, etc). #ohedchat
A4 I like to think actions are more powerful than words. Ss hear your words but don’t listen to them. But they can watch your actions and know that you care #ohedchat
A5) seniors asked to start a broadcast class second semester. There isn't a T free, so I jumped in, learning video editing along side them...it's been an amazing process for me & hopefully a good example to them. Check us out. https://t.co/PbFaZELZXv#ohedchat
A2: Robin - IL, I like to try things & use a #growthmindset. I want students to develop a growthmindset and be willing to have #perseverance. #ohedchat
Q2: The Power of your Philosophy: Thinking about your practice as an educator, how would you describe your philosophy of teaching/coaching/leading? #OhEdChat
A5: I have to learn, anything, or I feel like I'm dying mentally and emotionally. Currently I'm learning Chinese and it's blowing my mind and making so many connections to my Spanish class. Me as a student reimagines so many concepts as a new language learner. #ohedchat
A5: stop learning really? Sounds like stop working out. Sorry not today.
Too much awesome things to learn about and share that useless information with others. But honest to be an educator and think your learning is done you're in the wrong profession.
#ohedchat
Q6: The Power of YOU: Thinking about your practice as an educator, your environment would not be the same without YOU. How do YOU intentionally find ways to connect YOU to those in your realm of influence? Is this important? Why? #OhEdChat
Q5: The Power of Learning: Thinking about your practice as an educator, would you agree that learning is a perpetual process for you? Why or why not? How has/would indefinite learning influenced your practice? #OhEdChat
And so am I, improving daily. A constant work in progress. I think our experiences help us to see the power that our spoken and unspoken words have and shape our future actions. #OhEdChat
A6: Listening is key--I listen carefully and find connection points. We all learn better and work more efficiently when we feel accepted and connected. #ohedchat
A6: I think a major key in connecting in therapy sessions is to be light hearted. Make silly faces with the Ss in the mirror, make them laugh when trying to show and explain articulation techniques. Laughing can be a great way to connect and comfort! #ohedchat@barbersclass
#ohedchat A6 It is a real challenge to regularly connect with the folks who use our coding activities. If we're being honest, communication (not technical issues) is the bottleneck of any successful project. It is hard to keep in touch with folks we've met around the state.
A6 SO IMPORTANT! If you live on an island, you are going to get burnt out. Find your people on Twitter, participate in Twitter chats, connect and network at conferences/edcamps! Support is everywhere #ohedchat
A6: Learning about your students and making connections is so important in making your students feel like you care about them and are there to support them. #ohedchat#barbersclass
As a BT, there is so much I want to do/so much I want to learn to do as well. At times I think I really need to focus on the foundation of my craft but I think trying (and sometimes...a lot of times failing) keeps me in the game. Shows me my weak points so I can improve #Ohedchat
Occasionally, we need a change in environment. @ColsSchForGirls is hosting a Central Ohio Diversity Educator Recruitment Fair for teachers, admin and staff. Meet new schools. Consider joining us and other schools and/or spreading the word! https://t.co/9vnjpS3Ppq#ohedchat
A5: stop learning really? Sounds like stop working out. Sorry not today.
Too much awesome things to learn about and share that useless information with others. But honest to be an educator and think your learning is done you're in the wrong profession.
#ohedchat
A6. We have to model what we expect from Ts & Ss. Show them how to be an innovator, motivator, have perseverance, adaptable, critical thinker and team player. Above all teach them kindness and to respect differences #ohedchat
Q6: The Power of YOU: Thinking about your practice as an educator, your environment would not be the same without YOU. How do YOU intentionally find ways to connect YOU to those in your realm of influence? Is this important? Why? #OhEdChat
A6: It's important to connect to those in power, but sometimes we have to seek these connections outside of our school. These can be as useful and productive as one in the bldg. #ohedchat
Also, all the amazing twitter peeps I follow have confirmed a lot of my philosophy and ideals. I love learning from others how to improve many different areas of my teaching. Teaching is certainly not a one and done profession....lifetime learners for sure! #OhEdchat#nced
A6: beyond a smile and checking in I've started writing thank you notes with supreme stickers inside. Every card ends with thanks for being a Supreme educator for our kids.
#OhEdChat
A6) as an admin, still be YOU. Have likes and dislikes. Be funny. Be sad. Don't politician yourself...that is, dont try to be so likeable to everyone by being bland, that you turn into no one. Be great at your job and hang onto your personality.
#ohedchat
