A1: Benefits of coding include critical thinking, outside the box thinking, problem solving, and perseverance training.
A1:Coding allows for Ss to develop critical thinking skills and develop something that they want, and develop skills for the future
Kristi, AP, from Texas! Excited to be here
A1: So many benefits. But, I would narrow down to perserverance, problem solving, collaboration, & gateway to Computer science
A1: It is problem solving in the modern world. It is also introducing our Ss to great career opportunities.
A1: Ss increase critical thinking & problem solving skills. Helps my 3rd graders become more independent. & they are engaged!
can't wait to learn more about coding!!
A1: The major thing that comes to my mind is problem solving, cause and effect, "thinking ahead" if you will.
A1: Creativity, Diligence, Patience and Persistence
A1. It is a great way to increase collaboration and engage Ss in problem-solving. It has also been very motivating for my Ss.
Misty form TN, - is there room for a southern gal here? Looking forward to learning with everyone!
A1: Promotes problem-solving and perseverance. And it's a new "language" our kids need to know!
Sorry I'm a little late! Megan first year 5th grade teacher from Ness!
A1B: There is no wrong answer, the Ss gets to create whatever comes to their mind and they become the expert
Hello ! Lori from Cheney. PK-5 instructional/tech coach.
A1: Real world applications.... I hope! Excited to try coding this year.
A1 cont: The math like thinking is incredible. Also lends itself well to creativity!
A1: Jane, 1st grade! Definitely perseverance and problem solving, getting ready for the future!
Which platform are you going to be using>
A1: Another benefit is it's one thing most knew more than I did about. They got to teach the teacher :)
A1: collaboration, engagement, problem solving
Not sure yet. I have saved some suggestions from ISTE 2016, just need to process. Suggestions?
all good things, my friend. Always more than one way to travel.
A1: new to coding but what I've read is that it helps kids w/ logical thinking, problem solving, collaboration, & communication
A1: I love it because I am learning coding right along with the students. It's pretty cool when they help me solve an issue.
A1 cont: With https://t.co/v2up765awc ...the puzzle require precision but the open-ended assessments allow them to apply learning
A1. Perseverance, productive struggles and look into post secondary opportunities.
A1: Real-world skills, career readiness.
A1: Great way to learn perseverance, reasoning, teamwork (if permitted) and feel great success when mastered!
A1: It brings out talents in kids that may not show up in eveyday classroom life.
I have used with my grade 5 students. It is fun and they have a T curriculum. Some S used scratch too.
I love that term "productive struggles!" I'm going to borrow that!
Any suggestions from ISTE 2016??
Jessica Cabeen. Kindergarten Principal in Austin Minnesota and PLN friend of
A1: Problem Solving and Perseverance.
A1 cont: love that it allows some kids to shine when they may not in other areas
hour of code, a google platform, lots of scratch suggestions
Yes! Great opportunity for me to step out of my box in front of the kiddos. https://t.co/B27hIN26U4
learning together is so much fun and highly motivating!
A1: coding is an important part of the future many jobs will depend on it! Teaches perseverance
Excellent contribution from - all minds wired differently.. https://t.co/odJmjf1YS9
A1 cont: love that it allows some kids to shine when they may not in other areas
do QR codes count as coding??!
A1: it's all about problem solving and finding solutions for the future
Ooh! I'll have to add to my list!
A2. I think this correlates to CCSS in math when kids are asked to find and create patterns, this varies among grade levels
A2:We are developing the Ss ability to develop higher levels of learning, and can be cross-curricular and teach computer skills
Working with Tickle for programming drones (thx Adam Bellow) - anyone using it?
Monika King, principal at Catholic boarding school in Atchison. Late and lurking tonight
Yes, my kinders and firsties
Last year loved doing ! I am expanding this year!
A2: Math practice standards all over the place. https://t.co/9LBkxLVJ6K curriculum is alligned w/ELA and Matt CCSS.
A2: I think it's a great opportunity for listening and speaking- collaborative conversations
Hi, all! Lisa, IC from Chicago joking late.
A2: took the words out of my mouth. is as well!
A2: Coding absolutely correlates with the 8 Mathematical Practices!!! I'd argue that students are showing each practice.
Wow! I think I need a beginner course on this! Glad I'm amongst experts tonight to get me kick started!
Any recommendations for starting point w/middle school sped Ss?
A2: Got to spontaneously teach angles when working on Brilliant teachable moment, and b/c it was relevant, they got it!
Hi. Joining late...Brant, MS Principal from Wyoming
A2: I think the level of thinking and problem solving stretches across virtually everything. Again, thinking with the end in mind
I'm not, but I am interested. Any info you could share?
A2. This isn't exactly CCSS but coding also focuses on the "soft skills" we are wanting to foster in our kids
A2 cont...Here are the standards for just one lesson from code.orgs unplugged curriculum... https://t.co/0HclfoQcj5
A2) Students can write stories from their coding, think critically, present to an audience, teach others (speaking & listening)
A1: In my limited experience with coding, I really like the creativity that is involved...is there a better way to write this?
A2: Critical thinking, planning, speaking, working collaboratively and presentation skills seem to be universally applicable.
A2: considering that so many CCSS standards are skill based, coding can always be used to demonstrate learning, a product.
thanks, I know nothing on this topic, need all the help I can get
Hi Brant and welcome to . Glad you're here!
Attention to detail. And the Ss will focus for hours on this aspect. Incredible. https://t.co/yIt7GdsZHS
A1: Creativity, Diligence, Patience and Persistence
Curious- example(s) of a product/project?
Yes, sir! Good to see you again.
Agree with this and have seen it in action. https://t.co/VuaWvqXKzg
A2) Students can write stories from their coding, think critically, present to an audience, teach others (speaking & listening)
Do you ever see it coming along side other "forgeign languages"? https://t.co/WWnPgaquSR
A1: Promotes problem-solving and perseverance. And it's a new "language" our kids need to know!
I always start my 3rd graders with Hour of Code modules -- under the "Learn" tab.
I'm going to have to look into this more!! Thanks for sharing!
I had the privilege of seeing Monika King today at in KC! Hi again, . :-)
Which platform/language are you using, if you don't mind my asking? https://t.co/kX6BrEpL8G
A1: I love it because I am learning coding right along with the students. It's pretty cool when they help me solve an issue.
A2: it can help kids persevere in problem solving
I have heard that some Univs are considering it to fulfill foreign lang req. Absolutely appropriate!
oh, I like that lesson plan!
DIdn't know about this until half way through last year. Will do this first now! https://t.co/c6bARgmcg9
I always start my 3rd graders with Hour of Code modules -- under the "Learn" tab.
You read my mind! I see the same thing :) https://t.co/rMpN7ebPoK
A2: Coding absolutely correlates with the 8 Mathematical Practices!!! I'd argue that students are showing each practice.
They are amazing!! Really help my Ss practice following directions correctly, too!
Javascript is what they start w/on https://t.co/v2up765awc but they start w/blocks & move towards others https://t.co/UdwOc9lSXp
Which platform/language are you using, if you don't mind my asking? https://t.co/kX6BrEpL8G
A1: I love it because I am learning coding right along with the students. It's pretty cool when they help me solve an issue.
A3: It helps when Ss are blindfolded and fellow Ss have to direct them around obstacles, etc. Brings real world experience.
A3: The unplugged activities on are great.
Love this idea to introduce coding! https://t.co/e40gYr3ib1
A3: It helps when Ss are blindfolded and fellow Ss have to direct them around obstacles, etc. Brings real world experience.
A3: I may be way off the mark here, new to coding, but I'm big into writing and Ss explaining their thinking.
A3: Had them pretend to code each other using pieces of paper with actions on them. Not sure it worked, so looking for new ideas!
A3 I'm thinking about the good ol' writing activity where Ss write how to make a PB&J sandwich. Ss will need every detail precise.
Absolutely use coding as a catalyst 4 storytelling/instructional writing. Ss highly engaged, writing more fun 2.
A3: We use "Partner Match" (S provide directions to a partner) "Drawing through directions" and Blocks.
Pondered that myself, esp after former student (in college now) who learned to code via Youtube sugg it shd be so
A3. I try to incorporate games into my math centers that work on problem-solving and finding patterns like QBitz and Rush Hour
We have done this too. We used this idea when designing Sci Proj. and the procedure. Details are the key.
What CAN'T you learn via Youtube, lol https://t.co/OpBlGynhLl
Pondered that myself, esp after former student (in college now) who learned to code via Youtube sugg it shd be so
I use to do this when I taught science! Ss would then have to follow the directions precisely to make the sandwich.
Great tip! Will definitely use this more!
love partnerships w/other coding sites. They want you to move on beyond them. But, code org is edu-sound
A3: New to coding....getting great ideas to introduce it to Ss.
Learning so much about from ! The site has really grown since I started using it! Needed to keep exploring!
I did that as well...was messy and meaningful when they forgot to say 'use knife to get peanut butter'!
HEATHER!! I finally got to meet you ... at in KC. :) Your presence and leadership matter. Thanks!
LOL! That's a lesson that will "stick" with them!
Awesome resource you provide! LOVE the trainer in my area (East TN). He rocks!!
It really has grown. I'm always updating my PD website to keep up for my trainings! https://t.co/NqKUvKlXMH

A2: We even became coding buddies w/a 1st grade classroom. They needed us for about 5 minutes and then they were flying!!!
A4 (2): My Ss last year were very dependent. Coding helped them learn to problem solve & ask others for help, not just me!
Did a lot with , and had a group that really became experts. I LOVE when a kiddo finds something new they are good at!
Thank you!!! I have a feeling the kids will teach me more than I teach them.
Started with Hour of Code in Dec. Then did a unit in Jan. so 2 hrs/wk on average then at home if they wanted.
Wow!!! This place is coding fantastic tonight!
Funny how that happens when we let it :) https://t.co/06MGeaKJrn
