Lindsay from Ohio...I would give an Oscar to the folks @CAST_UDL for their stellar representations the UDL guidelines in the newest format! Lots of excitement around the latest resource! #udlchat
Kelley from BCSC in IN. I would go with most recent watch and an Oscar to the whole cast of Black Panther. Character development ✔️ fab story ✔️ action ✔️ depth ✔️#udlchat
Barb from State Support Team 7 in Ohio. The Oscar goes to fabulous teachers in our Closing the Gap series who are knocking instruction out of the park using the UDL Framework!#udlchat
A1: When I think UDL Action/Expression, I think of anything except for a test or essay. Any other way for Ss to show what they know= Action & Expression #UDLchat
A1: I like to focus on the “action” part of action & expression. When learners act on what they know, they’re manipulating it. They’re remixing it. They’re understanding it deeply. #UDLchat
A1: I think of fluid motion that's adjusted to individual needs/preferences and someone saying "YOU CAN DO IT" Kind of like this GIF of Tony Little riding his exercise machine. #UDLChat
Ours and our Students’ creativity! Once I’m really clear what understanding students must demonstrate I can let them come up with way more creative options than I could alone! #udlchat
A2 it is all about the learners. If we want to prepare our learners for the real world we have to put them in the driver seat. Choice choice and voice voice #udlchat
A2: too often students want to move in directions that don’t “fit” the standards- until they stop exploring what they’re learning - with support that possibility of re-igniting their passionate curiosity can come back!! #udlchat
A2 UDL isn’t just about choices, it is about loving and cultivating the type of person who knows how make great choices that work for them in meeting their goals. #UDLchat#thatishowlifeworks
A2- strategic & goal directed is how you get stuff done & show what you know. It's how we put our knowledge into action. We want students & learners who can act upon their knowledge #udlchat
A2: too often students want to move in directions that don’t “fit” the standards- until they stop exploring what they’re learning - with support that possibility of re-igniting their passionate curiosity can come back!! #udlchat
Mia from FL and the Oscar goes to my #udl#pln and my hometown of Orlando! For hosting UDL-IRN in my backyard - I can’t wait to be surrounded and get lost in the sea of #udl rockstars!!
A2: confident, passionate, focused (but in his or her own way), and can tell you in the moment where they are on the pathway toward their goal. #UDLchat
A2: Whenever I think of a strategic and goal-directed learner, I always think of the success kid meme. That kid knows his goal and knows how to reach it. Nailed it. #UDLchat
A2: If our goal is to create expert Learners, we have to give them opportunities to follow their curiosities, set goals, assess their own progress, and manage time so they can do this beyond the walls of. school #UDLChat
A2: A strategic, goal directed learner is my daughter. Very linear in thought and capable of completing the goal, but if she is only directed in one method, that is the only one she will use. (She is now an Aeronautical Engineer and HAS to be creative.) #udlchat
A2: This doesn’t answer your question directly but I first thought of the T as a question asker...S’s will have their own questions but also may need the T to support with asking questions too. #udlchat
A3: Since I am in a coaching role, it looks like teachers being brave in trying new options with kids and being willing to do what it takes to reach their learners. It also looks a lot like students loving learning and being challenged. #UDLchat
A2: I agree we need to model goal-directed & strategic, but we need to point out how Ss are already showing how they can be both where they are in their lives. #udlchat
A3- A 3rd Grader who asked her teacher if the class could do a fish bowl activity so that she could see how other reading groups were approaching the assignment #GrowingStrategicKids#udlchat
A3: creating concept maps using digital platforms, pipe cleaners, construction paper, markers, tape - collaborative designing to show understanding. That's just one of many #udl activities. #udlchat
A3: Just one? Well, y’all know I love some acronyms. In my PDs for Ts, I use the acronym SMART to encourage them to give Ss the chance to:
S- Show it
M- Make it
A- Act it out
R- Report it/write about it
T- Talk/tell about it
#UDLchat
A3: Action and Expression gives choice and if nothing seems to engage, roll the dice and “Fascinate me” whatever they come up with works. Students are the most creative when the options are endless #UDLchat
#udlchat A3) action/expression can look very different from utilizing tech. to demonstrate learning to capitalizing on students strengths to show what they know in their own way
A3: Strategic and goal directed work for me looks like using the Pomodoro Technique to keep me on track. Helped me write two books this past year. #UDLChat
A3: in my classroom it often looks like my Ss are uncomfortable at first because we are trying something in a new way. So we try, fail, adjust, produce, and reflect. #udlchat
A3: action and expression in my world: at school=helping Ts achieve their goals in a variety of ways that challenge & support them. At home, action and expression looks like this, clear goal & criteria for success, multiple ways to achieve it! #udlchat
Great question, Neena. It would depend on the learning goal and context. #UDL doesn’t focus on the disability itself, but how the learning environment/curriculum can be adjusted to reduce barriers. Check out the #UDL Guidelines site for more info: https://t.co/1uDxtJOWzn#UDLchat
A3: Action and Expression looks like everyone celebrating their unique selves in a way that makes sense for them to get to the goal- however that looks. Fantastic, fabulous, and FUN! #UDLChat
A3: technology allows my students to create videos, podcasts, webpages, comics and so much more to show and share their learning - drawing posters is still a choice for my artistic kids but tech means everyone can create #udlchat
A4- I'm actually interested in how instructional tech might be taxing kid's strategic systems when we don't consider if the demands are developmentally appropriate #DocStudentProblems#udlchat
We are so ready to use the strategic networks in our brains to act on and express our knowledge. Thank you, @digitallearnudl for another amazing #UDLchat! Join @Ronbrogers on March 21 for our next live half hour explosion of #UDL goodness.
A4 I think a lot can said for Siri. So many of our kids have Apple products. They are user-friendly and allow students to schedule important reminders, study sessions, etc. Sometimes I think the adults make it more complicated than it is.#udlchat
A4: so many great tech options, but this semester these have been game changers for my Ss. I never thought we needed these in a high school classroom. So. Wrong. We are doing all kinds of learning with some low tech. #bestdecision#udlchat
A4: technology allows my students to create videos, podcasts, webpages, comics and so much more to show and share their learning - drawing posters is still a choice for my artistic kids but tech means everyone can create #udlchat#udlchat
A4. One of my favourite things to do is to check into a group’s What’s app so that I can review the conversation regarding group assignments. How are they working together and with which strategies? #udlchat
Thanks everyone for putting up with me and my crazies! Keeps them interested to be on the chat and keeps their dad from just zoning out on his phone! #UDLchat
A4: Some students love a variety of tech tools but there are still those that love “old” tools like markers, poster paper and creating paper books #UDLchat
A4: purposefully selected and effectively introduced technology can be an awesome way for Ss to show what they know. Ss can help design the intro and even help select the tech used. #udlchat
#udlchat Tech to me is the difference between riding in a horse/buggy to get somewhere or on foot vs a ferarri that can get u there more efficiently and is way more fun! the key is knowing how to "drive" the ferarri though!
Thanks all...every interaction with students, lesson, pd event is your action and expression of your UDL vision. Do You! Teaching is your super power! #udlchat
Here’s the two docs I made for my pilot teachers (I couldn’t find them earlier as I’m not using my laptop) MARSH for representation & SMART for action & expression. #udlchat
A4: Differentiation provides access to learners through various forms of scaffolding, visual supports and learning materials. Equal access means that everyone is given the opportunity to learn. #sblchat
A4: High Tech is great but T’s are learners too! So we need to universally design our #PD for teachers with that in mind and support them b/c how tech is used effectively and if at all is dependent on the growth mindset and knowledge of the people delivering the lesson #udlchat
At one point, a ballpoint pen was new technology. It is always the teachers and lessons that make the learning experience and the tools just help facilitate learning. #udlchat
