I’m Josh, former science teacher @ MSD Pike & currently in SWVA @ John Battle High School teaching Bio/Anatomy. Love following & partially lurking these #INeLearn chats from Virginia! Love #tech & #elearning#GrowWhereYourePlanted
R1 I would love for teachers to feel more confident in their ability to incorporate #digcit into the lessons they already teach. You don't have to stop teaching your subject to embed digital citizenship. #INeLearn
R1: My goal would be for Ss to see how this impacts their lives, to see why it is important, to see that it is really just an extension of their lives in "meet space" #INeLearn

Exactly. This isn’t something on top of what we do. We integrate it seamlessly because that is what we do to help our students become thoughtful citizens! #INeLearn

R1 For staff/Ts I hope that they see the value in the knowledge, but also for modeling purposes. For Ss I want them to see the relevancy just like @T_Copple said! #INeLearn
R1 My vision is that Ss learn the impact they can have digitally can expand beyond the social and into the intellectual...all while understanding the need for safety, responsibility & integrity. #INeLearn
R1: I mostly just work w/ teachers, so I would love to see teachers embracing technology to the point that it's not a bad word in class. It's not going anywhere so let's figure out how to get everyone on the same page and harness the limitless potential of technology. #INeLearn
I completely agree with this! I feel like teachers must introduce digital citizenship in a such a way that students don't think of it as a "set of rules" but something that is necessary for them both in and out of school. #INeLearn
R1: My goal would be for Ss to see how this impacts their lives, to see why it is important, to see that it is really just an extension of their lives in "meet space" #INeLearn
I love the idea of incorporating #digcit into currently taught lessons. I think this could help make it more relevant to the students by allowing them to make real life connections, and it kills two birds with one stone. #INeLearn
A2: I’m working with our media specialists tomorrow on integrating digcit lessons into their curriculum. Also having a digcit workday with my elementary district tech reps #INeLearn
R2: The @SoWeLEAD team just had a big digital citizenship - Think-In with 10 area schools participating. Our teams of students are planning lessons at their schools based off the plans they developed last Friday! #INeLearn
R2 Last week was my first digcit week, and I offered to read #digcit pictures books (learned that here from @risky4) and model digcit in classrooms. The response has been great! And our teachers, like @CarrieSchmitt5, ramped up the digcit in their lessons, too! #INeLearn
R1: While I'm not yet a teacher, I think that in the future, it's important to include both staff and students into the #digcit plan so that teachers and students alike can have a shared vision on what it should look like. #INeLearn
R2: my class discusses how to be appropriate with creation of online content daily. We talk about airdropping, expectations for tech usage, etc. #INeLearn
R1: I don't really have a vision for this, but now that you're making me think about it... it would be that kids are constantly cognizant of how they come across online. #INeLearn
R2: By not making too big of a deal about it. They don't come to me as a "bad" citizen that needs fixed. Looking for information? Pick a good source. Using the source for an assignment? Cite it. Making a post? Be respectful and polite and share info not insults. #INeLearn

You know something was worth while when students are disappointed that it’s over. Today was a great day with @SoWeLead💡Our students are pumped to start a Digital Leadership Team at @mvjhsmtvernon! #SoWeLead#INeLearn#ICEIndiana

R1: I think it's important to communicate to all teachers on staff and make sure everyone's on the same page regarding digital citizenship. They're likely using devices in most of their classes, so consistency in expectations is crucial. #INeLearn
We do mini lessons I call "tech tuesdays" but I frame it like they are tips and tricks or cheet codes. Not rules or things they need to get better at. #INeLearn
R3: modeling the correct way to create and use digital media. If Ts are not being good digital citizens, how can we expect our Ss to do this? #INeLearn
R3 The word that comes to mind is "enlightenment." Ss are generally aware there are risks, but they don't always see their actions as risky behaviors. I use real-world examples from SM and we analyze the user agreements to see what data is being shared. #INeLearn

R3: Teachers are ethically obligated to follow and model good digital citizenship practices and behaviors with their students.

R3: As Ts, we are ultimately responsible for whatever her students produce, whether physically or online. Although high school students are old enough to make their own choices, those choices also reflect on me as a teacher. Hopefully they are always good ones!! #INeLearn
R3 This is so important! But I always worry they don't fully grasp the importance of taking care of their digital identities at this stage in their lives. #INeLearn

A3 tough answer in today's world...I believe having an open conversation with students is the start...what does he/she believe is appropriate then go from there...I think some Ss could actually police themselves to each other accountable...maybe too idealistic 😬 #INeLearn
Great point. No matter the age, I think we can all learn - which is why we are here!!! I’m sure there are a few adults out there who need digital citizenship reminders too! #INeLearn
R3: I think all teachers need to lead by example. They should have the technical proficiency in explaining #digcit to their students and be able to provide the tools and resources to ensure that students are digitally safe and responsible. #INeLearn
A4: Good question! I do believe it is a fine line between getting students to be global collaborators but also keeping privacy in check.. I’m especially thinking of littles #inelearn
R4: Tough one - Schools are meant to be a safe place to experiment, push boundaries, without serious repercussions. But mistakes in the digital world can quickly go far beyond the school gates no matter your age #INeLearn
R4: When I think restrictions, I’m thinking filters that block and using programs like @DyKnow to lock things down. Setting examples and having flexibility is trusting our Ss and helping to show Ss right and wrong. Realize that Ss need help and will mess up #INeLearn
R4 Is it ok to be honest and say, "I don't know?" I feel like the line is elusive as we scramble to keep up with the latest apps and possibilities. I love using tools like @Flipgrid and @CanvasLMS to teach these skills within safe parameters. #INeLearn
R4: I think it is important to have these policies in place, but you don't want to overwhelm the students with procedures as these can sometimes be forgotten. I think there is a very thin line between the two. Teachers should try to use the procedures to promote digcit. #INeLearn
R4 I'm siding with @williamastein on this. As long as all legal obligation are met, I'd rather give students more freedom to learn and make small mistakes while they're still under our care.
#INeLearn

R4: I think someone use the car as an example of do we restrict or do we teach how to manage the tool? Promoting digcit and allowing Ss a voice is absolutely future-ready preparation. #INeLearn
R4: I’ve said this before, but rules and regulations are for those 3-5% of Ss that will cause 95-97% of the issues. We need to help guide ALL Ss in making correct choices, but have flexibility. #INeLearn
Within our domain, I think we can definitely teach these skills like you said. We need to be intentional when doing so in order for the transfer of skills to happen within the digital world. #INeLearn

R4: I think any policies/procedures seem restrictive unless we understand why they're in place. We have to help kids see the reason behind them. Until they do, the restrictions have to be there anyway to protect them. #INeLearn
R1: I want all people to feel a sense of self, community, and responsibility when it comes to the digital world. Whether we like it or not, we are all digital citizens these days--but it would be fantastic if we could also be GOOD digital citizens! #INeLearn

Yes, with the rapid pace of technological development, it can be incredibly overwhelming to keep up. I think it's important to reach out to people who can help and be willing to admit what's unclear to you. #INeLearn

R2: Since Im a pre-service teacher, I can only go off of my limited experience. I find that every school I visit seems to promote mindfulness when it comes to the internet and interacting on a digital stage. Mindful of what we say and how our words impact others #INeLearn
R5: Ts need to be creators and modelers of tech usage also. I’m constantly talking about what is on @CanvasLMS for my Ss. That’s content I’ve created to help my Ss learn. I tweet a little. I tell my Ss that they are creating things that will be their legacy. #INeLearn
R5 I think for many Ts, it comes with making the connection that we are ALL responsible for #digcit. I think sometimes Ts feel like it's the job of the tech staff??? #INeLearn
R5: I think this goes back to the point of leading by example. Teachers need to model to students what it means to have a positive digital footprint and encourage students to carefully evaluate their interactions/contributions in the digital world. #INeLearn
R5: Make sure they have resources to do that! Equip them with options and give them enough training to use them with confidence! Many times we just shy away from what we don't feel comfortable tackling. #INeLearn
R3: I believe its every adult's job to protect the young people in their lives--especially teachers, and especially online. I believe my responsibility is to give students the tools they need to protect themselves and to set a good example for them with my own behavior #INeLearn

You are right. I’m looking at the world through former admin lenses and with Ts that aren’t always doing what is best for all Ss. Yes, I’m slightly cynical. #INeLearn
R6: For curiosity, allow kids to ask those questions, never taking them personally. Create thought-provoking questions. Have them do critical thinking activities, and ask them why, why, why, especially when it comes to digital posting. #INeLearn
R5 I think for many Ts, it comes with making the connection that we are ALL responsible for #digcit. I think sometimes Ts feel like it's the job of the tech staff??? #INeLearn
R6 It's so meaningful to see all stakeholders modeling this aspect of digcit, from teachers to admin and everyone in between. We can't share false stories on Facebook then expect students to be critical of sources.
#INeLearn
R6: I think that making #digcit flexible and individualized for each student is a great way help support establishing a learning culture that promotes curiosity. With curiosity comes critical examination of the online resources that the students are utilizing. #INeLearn
R6: this year I used googles applied digital skills lesson to introduce the idea if source credibility. Student learned ways to test a sources credibility and then they made a fake article where they inserted their clues and shared their articles with each other. #INeLearn
R4: We need to educate our students on why policies exist in the first place and how these policies interact with digcit. While we cannot force our students to be good digcits, we can educate them on best practices. #INeLearn
R6: providing opportunities, Ss that are collaborating and being critical thinkers of the online materials they use and research. My AP Ss are very good at looking at articles on content and looking at it with a critical lens. #INeLearn
R5: I think this goes back to the point of leading by example. Teachers need to model to students what it means to have a positive digital footprint and encourage students to carefully evaluate their interactions/contributions in the digital world. #INeLearn
R6: This is a great question. First and foremost, we need to teach students how to identify trustworthy and reliable sources online because it's so easy now to get caught up in information overload. Teachers should be able to point students to substantive resources. #INeLearn
R5: Making it clear to the teachers that digcit is just as important as anything else in their curriculum! Advocating for change and education so teachers understand the in's and out's of good digcit so they can pass it on to their students #INeLearn
I love this! I think that it would be both ideal and realistic to help students understand the importance of digcit. I also like the way you describe digcit–– "an extension of their lives in meet space." Great point! #INeLearn
Absolutely! I really dislike when I hear that perspective. Tech now influences so many parts of our daily lives. It is everyone's responsibility to understand #digcit. #INeLearn
R6: We need to regularly push our teachers, students, and administrators out of routine--lead workshops about new resources, teach everyone how to evaluate sites and sources of info, and generally kickstart a desire for connection that digcit can bring us! #INeLearn
I don't either! I feel that I have nothing to hide. I, of course, have boundaries that I keep in place, but I have no problem w/ Ss viewing my SM. #INeLearn
R7: Own it when I make a mistake! This digital world is ever evolving and I make mistakes just like kids do - so helping them see how to handle it when that happens. #INeLearn
R7: I protect my information online, I don't stand for trolling or harassment of others, I cite and source all content I use from others, and recommend that my friends do the same! #INeLearn
I sometimes give extra credit if students reach out to professionals on SM. Better to hear it from the horse's mouth and they also get the chance to practice being a good digcit in a positive way #INeLearn
R7: My social media posts are almost always positive now. I share photos of classroom activities that reflect growth mindset. Or at least I try to. I comply with photo restrictions. I tell Ss how I won't ask them to do anything I'm not willing to do myself. #INeLearn
R7: modeling how to do research, how to use media and resources appropriately, monitoring Ss usage in class. Oh, and sometimes just disconnecting from digital means. (I don’t do that well...) #INeLearn

Q7: As a teacher, I always try to emphasize digital literacy. Especially because I teach in an area (music) that often feels behind in its technology use, I like to show other teachers that there are valuable tools out there that can enhance our instruction. #INeLearn
True, but at the core of a teacher is a student who loves to learn. I think that if we make it clear that making mistakes/being wrong is ok in this learning process (just like when they were young learners themselves!) we can encourage and enable teachers to engage! #INeLearn
Wrap up: Personally I would like to see a high school course on this specific topic. Or even include it in SWARM. Who knows, maybe it already is? #INeLearn

WU R: It's important to include students in the teaching process & create a shared vision for digcit with colleagues. It might be beneficial to have digcit workshops that teachers are able to attend, or encourage them to join in on twitter chats similar to this one! :) #INeLearn
