Christy, Elementary Principal in Costa Mesa. Great topic tonight. Excited to learn
-----------------> Q1 is ready, are you?
Watch for
Q1 Why is “Making” such a popular topic in education right now?
A1: it is HOT because it works
A1 we have always been making in schools. This is a name that pills all these skills together
A1: "Making" is engaging. It is innovative. It gets people - whether teachers, board members, or students - involved in education.
Hey High school Teacher Librarian. Beyond excited to apply design thinking in
A1: Making gives Ss voice & choice over their learning...it allows them to explore & innovate...it lets them learn AND have fun!
A1 We live in a world where creativity is no longer an option or an extra.
Tipping in the door late...Lee in Salinas, CA. Hi all!
A1 Creativity drives every industry. "Making" is now an essential pathway for our kids.
A1 because sometimes making is confused with use flashy tools which is really PBL
I think we are learning that we have a deep intrinsic need and want...to create.
A1: Making seems to be buzzing because it's hands on and open ended. Not all fun and games tho. Needs to have clear goals.
Tweetdeck makes these chats easy for newcomers!
https://t.co/xErxrTYzsP
tip: Use TweetDeck and have two columns open for the chat; one for real time and one for where you are in the chat.
A2: I think giving kids a chance to create things allows them freedom and gives them a chance to be creative
A1: Making captures the heart of 21st C learning, all 4 Cs.
A1:Making allows Ss to solve authentic probs, think creatively Skills more important 2day than memorizing https://t.co/s94bpLKfaA
Q1 Why is “Making” such a popular topic in education right now?
Clear goals, and fun, and building games?
A1: Making allows for innovation, creativity, problem solving, and critical thinking.
A1 making is the application of all the knowledge that you impart to Ss in your classroom
A1 The Maker Movement brings learning to LIFE! And it makes learning tangible and relevant to their curious brains.
A1 Bc we have moved beyond simple knowledge & toward the application of knowledge to accomplish a task. Necessity.
A!- Making something is the best way to prove you actually comprehend the fundamentals enough to build something of your own.
A1 taking it to the grassroots of how we first learned
are you using Tweetdeck? Makes chats much easier to control :-)
Hi all you left coasters! I am popping in for a bit of because, I thought it was missing some east coast bias
A1 it's fun, and we end up with a tangible product. "I made that!"
A1: we know we are preparing students for jobs that don't exist yet. works for 4 Cs.
A1 - w/ our "falling out" in STEAM globally(ugh-standardized test), this seems to be the natural response to try & cure the issue
is so "popular" right now because we are all about and - unstructured learning.
A1 Making goes back to the root of all people. We are all curious. We all love to create.
A1: making allows Ss to develop contemporary skills while still addressing standards. And it's fun. Fun = learning.
Making is fundamentally progressive and constructionist https://t.co/5sqjdCopUc
A1 taking it to the grassroots of how we first learned
A2: They should be embedded in all classrooms. Allowsing for al students to have an oppurtunity to create
We're "falling out" with STEAM? I didn't get that memo.
Hello all. K-8 ELA TOA from the San Bernardino area
I heard that in that one voice
A1: because we need active classrooms, not passive ones.
A1 making is about focusing on the learning journey instead of the endpoint. We need more of that
A1: Making may be the antidote to NCLB over-testing and stagnation of imagination in education. Recognizing the need to create.
A1 - Information is now easily accessible - our ss now need opportunities to use that information to innovate ...
You want them to be excited to return for another day rather than looking for an escape! https://t.co/O5kWrB3cnp
Exploration and innovation are key. That helps create excitement about learning.
A1- Also, each students has something they can see and feel, which supports ownership of the task.
A1: because we are having kids learning a lot, but not CREATING much
A1 Making has many entry points for all types of learners and creators.
A1:allows Ss hands-on experience in creativity,perseverance,design-thinking.Ss get to explore ideas that once only lived on paper
It certainly isn't adding to the problem https://t.co/uazuq3OQDA
A1: Making may be the antidote to NCLB over-testing and stagnation of imagination in education. Recognizing the need to create.
A1- I haven't heard of the "Maker Movement"
A1 Because too much "making" has been removed from school....even though making is essential https://t.co/OJB1BJefwY
Q1 Why is “Making” such a popular topic in education right now?
A1 making got his job at his new school. THAT is why it is important
Agreed Like making projects in school to have purpose Guide Ss to also understand the learning happening
Lurking on while actually building a rube goldberg machine.
the relevant part is so important.
And it is a natural extension of the design experience (prototyping).
Yes! New NGSS standards are all about application and design. https://t.co/NYr0miJIKt
A1 Bc we have moved beyond simple knowledge & toward the application of knowledge to accomplish a task. Necessity.
Hi ! Assistant Director of Tech joining from
A1 simply put, it was the right time for making to take hold.Creating has always been important, educators were just ready for it
Shabana Jameel, M.Ed
T🍎 + EduConsultant
Suffered a ⚡️seizure this past week + have to put off plans to begin the SchoolYr. Late.
a1 because making isn't STEM or STEAM. Making is LEARNING folks.
-----------------> Q2 is up next.

-----------------> Q2 is up next.
Watch for
Also, "you're gonna need this one day" turns into "you'll need this right now."
I do a lot of art activities with math and science built in the back end
-----> Q2 Are maker experiences just for enrichment/electives? Or should it be embedded into classrooms/content learning?
If Making IS learning, shouldn't everyone be doing it? https://t.co/LAWfHeg1wl
a1 because making isn't STEM or STEAM. Making is LEARNING folks.
A4: An area for the students to work and create things. Resources to allow you to provide whatever is needed for them
Teacher on Assignment- I create ELA curriculum 4 my independent study district that covers 3 counties & 14 sites
A1: "Making" fosters and empowers Ss imagination, collaboration and creativity. There is no "right" answer.
Shouldn't that be the HOTS to sound young and hip
Hi Joanne. Love your name by the way. We are on Q2 right now. Thanks for joining.
A2: Making allows you to incorporate reading, writing, math...the only difference is student choice leads to engaged learners!
Yep! Low floor high ceiling!
A2: I vote for embedded for all Ss. Makes learning accessible to all learners.
Hi educators! Greg- K, MD. Checking in late to the conversation, and it's late here on the east coast. Hope all are well.
A1- Making is already embedded into content, we just have to see/allow those opportunities to happen
Very true! And our science dept gets it! Tetons, Sinks Canyon, & Wind River local applications https://t.co/feizcWwY40
Yes! New NGSS standards are all about application and design. https://t.co/NYr0miJIKt
A1 Bc we have moved beyond simple knowledge & toward the application of knowledge to accomplish a task. Necessity.
A2: we should get making into every classroom as another mode of learning on the menu
A2:Interdisciplinary units are always encouraged.Sometimes hard to collaborate. we must move forward with activities where Ss MAKE
A1) Because design to develop & demonstrate talent & thinking -> authentic learning
A2: Embedded! So much vocabulary, collaboration, & critical thinking possible in "making." Every S should have opportunity.
some people are Neanderthals or just plain morons who this desks in rows are hot
RT : A1- Making is already embedded into content, we just have to see/allow those opportunities to happen
A2: I know the “right” answer, but I’m all for it just happening how/where-ever. Take away some roadblocks and get ss active.
I think we are still a long way from a Lathe and Kiln in every school
I also teach independent study Ss in grades K-12 (but hoping to stay around 6-12) this year
I am perpetually 6 so I am on top of this
A2: Making is a life skill, though in life we often call it fixing, solving, building, or improving.
A2:Embed&Integrate.Spark Ss interest by offering opportunity to design a solution for Science topics/redesign an event in history.
A2 Integrating making keeps application, critical thinking & prob solving at the heart of learning AND kids love it!
making is just one avenue for learning, a good one, but just one of many
Exactly! It shouldn't be a room you go to...but a part of every day lessons and opportunities IN each classroom!
A2 My answer is BOTH. But we need to embed it more into every day learning and not only delegate it to a select few (electives).
Hi Jen, thanks for joining
A2 I think embedded. Needs lots of collab time for Ts, too, to support.
STEAM across the disciplines all day all kids. Teachers too🙆
Borrowed that term from :)
A2: definitely embedded. It should not be an option for Ss or Ts. Making is how this generation learns. Put it everywhere.
When something becomes labeled "enrichment" and is left for "high" Ss, there is a disservice to too many https://t.co/TVnKFQmEFr
-----> Q2 Are maker experiences just for enrichment/electives? Or should it be embedded into classrooms/content learning?
making cover so many things that as long as kids are creating it is in
A1 Making culminates all Blooms Taxonomy levels; prerequisite understanding & learning levels, relevant https://t.co/o0wVvTkPnd
Q1 Why is “Making” such a popular topic in education right now?
A2: Making should be part of the classroom. This year we might go to public library's 3D printer to print
The art of making learning fun and authentic! https://t.co/QQThCg2G1o
A2 Integrating making keeps application, critical thinking & prob solving at the heart of learning AND kids love it!
Love this answer! Opens up some defining characteristics. https://t.co/BnGvDIki3A
A2: Making is a life skill, though in life we often call it fixing, solving, building, or improving.
And Jo is a wonderful person to quote!
A2) Definitely incorporate into learning. True learning and understanding
Well, I made a fantastic cobbler tonight, so making going well for me.
A2-Actually have a question about The Maker Movement. How do I make it relevant in a history classroom? Seems like a stretch
Good to see some familiar faces in my PLN tonight on .
Many of our students finished their I squared projects in the kitchen
Agree 100%. I just know myself. I would not have signed up for that class as a kid. I might not have understood
A2:Both! Like making electives, but LOVE integrating opportunities for creation into all subjects! https://t.co/tx33ziEinA
-----> Q2 Are maker experiences just for enrichment/electives? Or should it be embedded into classrooms/content learning?
A2 hell no. Maker is not likely or the computer lab time. Maker combines most content areas together
You are awesome! Keep tweeting and being part of the conversation. :)
A1 "Making" & invention taps our innate curiousity. It drives & inspires us to learn in order to solve self selected mysteries.
A2 it should be imbedded. Technology time isn't separate and if it is you should change that
A2: I think MAKER activities can be applied to multiple subject domains
-----------------> Q3 is set.
Watch for
Right, it can't be a "time" you set aside. It must be a part of the learning experience.
A2) Ss should design, develop, do, plan, produce, innovate, invent across the curriculum
Q3 How can you integrate “making” into your classroom (even if you don’t have a makerspace)? Even with a small budget?
true, I that respect I am making right now, it might make "making" too vague
How do I, as a history teacher, take time to join the maker movement?
A2 Embedded. CCSS require publication in ELA & others should share creations/ideas across curriculums.
A2- this sounds just like Project Based Learning and as such it should combine several areas into each experience- well rounded
if making is set aside, hey are you doing it?
A2 Making should be the learning product & evidence of all subjects if relevance is truly a goal; REAL https://t.co/Bdhy18idFz
-----> Q2 Are maker experiences just for enrichment/electives? Or should it be embedded into classrooms/content learning?
A2: MAKER activities can also be a springboard for collaboration across multiple subjects
Whoever controls my drained my📲 iPad even though iHad it fully🔋charged. + my iPhone is about to die https://t.co/j94YNio1bF
A2: Making is empowering. Every student should know that they can learn how to make real things for themselves.
Right on! Those "enrichment" activities are often the ones that engage our hard2reach Ss https://t.co/IcqnhFWCcc
When something becomes labeled "enrichment" and is left for "high" Ss, there is a disservice to too many https://t.co/TVnKFQmEFr
-----> Q2 Are maker experiences just for enrichment/electives? Or should it be embedded into classrooms/content learning?
The key is not thinking of it as time AWAY from content, but INTO it
Agree 100%! So many Ss are not allowed electives for various reason ie behind, or must go to ELD. That is not ok.
. A2: Both! All Ss should Make at least a little, plus there should be enrichment opp's for those who are interested.
Late to the party! Ryan from San Diego
A2 - NGSS Science Standards have students MAKING all the time.
Leila from Escondido jumping in late. 😊
A3- Allow Ss to get creative through real-world application. Brainstorm, plan, construct, celebrate.
A3 it requires nothing more than allowing kids an opportunity to create, we typically used any junk we could find
-----------------> Q3 is set.
Watch for
And make sure to have your making scaffolded for the variety of students.
A2- I think the hardest part would be to get others to collaborate with & giving Ts the confidence to let Ss Make their creations
How about in how they present their learning? 3-d printing of famous monuments, arduinos and maps... https://t.co/aYfzxSmxTC
How do I, as a history teacher, take time to join the maker movement?
A3 - as a sci teacher we try to bring in everyday items to help "build" - cardboard, paper, scissors, glue etc
A2: Making is often quite authentic. My favorite maker projects are the ones that help someone.
Have students make something within the constraints of that context
Q3 How can you integrate “making” into your classroom (even if you don’t have a makerspace)? Even with a small budget?
I am thinking about making in PD. less talk more collaboration more teacher control.
A3: Lurking on this Q, since this is what i've been wondering.
school should not be a series of roadblocks to creativity
A3 As former SS T, make meaning of primary source docs from multiple perspectives. Key is to publish those opinions for feedback.
A3) Ask good driving questions that encourage Ss to think critically & creatively what can you design, develop, do
get them making together and it will change relationships
Q3: School wide rummage sale and donation drive
A3 making is really 51% writing and 49% building. We have have to create responsible documenters and share
A3 - Give students choice to show what they learned. Allow them to make something that represents the topic.
At K level, building can take place using connecting cubes, lincoln logs, straws, blocks, etc. Many possibilities for creativity.
A3: doesn't need to be fancy. Typical classroom supplies and "trash" can be used. Just start collecting stuff.
A3:Making on a budget in my class was baking, quilting, prototyping w/recyclables https://t.co/AeYwy6DBsY
Q3 How can you integrate “making” into your classroom (even if you don’t have a makerspace)? Even with a small budget?
A3: Integrate "making" into school through online tech. Get ideas from fellow chatters on Twitter. Never give up on innovation.
A3- ask the Ss their thoughts- often they see things we wouldn't, talk to colleagues- be open minded
direct and "curate" that keep your space open and clean
Integrated, relevant learning. Plus getting hands on makes learning stick.
A3: I asked my graduate students to build models of learning. W/O a maker space. Here's how >> https://t.co/IVxOy8xglg
yes, they all deserve it not just those few who can take it as an elective
. recycled and reclaimed materials keep the focus on process
A3: IDK . I think MAYBE starting with what I'm familiar with. Wood, pipe, paper, glue... etc. IDK
A3: Donations, Donations, Donatons. Just like Not $ ones but cereal boxes, etc.
This is why special ed students, when given the chance, excel in advanced classes
A3 Ss "make" things all the time in science. Key is hands-on, ownership of learning
CrossCurriculum studies that integrate multiple subjects?✅
😬🍎
A3-if you can get the community involved- see if you can get donations, send letters home asking for supplies, make the effort
A3 anything with ! Literacy, coding or digital making or a $35 budget! Or blocks! Hey !!
A3 Maker ingredients can be found in ordinary everyday materials. Parent donations? Local business throwaways?
I know, right. Any yet…they keep getting put up in the name of performance, ranking, and rating.
I've always thought it would be great for teachers to do too.
A3: Take a risk. Go out and ask a business to donate supplies to make a scale model of the Twin Towers:
https://t.co/NFwV0BQrBq
Ownership of learning leads to powerful growth! https://t.co/jmr2uElmlN
A3 Ss "make" things all the time in science. Key is hands-on, ownership of learning
promotes problem solving,
This! this is something so true! https://t.co/JDeWKI9tMO
A3 making is really 51% writing and 49% building. We have have to create responsible documenters and share
A2, "Making" should be both part of content and enrichment. All students should have opportunities in a variety of contexts.
+1 for “Ownership of learning”
https://t.co/Bghc6zH2L4
A3 Ss "make" things all the time in science. Key is hands-on, ownership of learning
Asking parents to donate cardboard boxes & tubes, duct tape, and popsicle sticks...let kids start there https://t.co/8w3VHGG5mi
A3: doesn't need to be fancy. Typical classroom supplies and "trash" can be used. Just start collecting stuff.
A3 No budget for "making"??? How bout using critical writing as the made product? Let the brain push the pencil
. A3: Maker doesn't have to mean tech. Teaching crochet or paper airplanes can get your Ss thinking if you do it right.
Late arrival but ready to follow. Marla, 3rd grade-San Marcos.
A3: I love the idea of a rube goldberg machine + math. Statistics, data, measurements.
We are doing straw building this week and after the open challenge we will research structures and revise https://t.co/CWYGTARvww
Q3 How can you integrate “making” into your classroom (even if you don’t have a makerspace)? Even with a small budget?
baby steps and we'll all get there, we need to help others through the process
A3 Carving out time to tinker, explore & create doesn't require $, just intent.
. it is, and if you want them to use it, they have to do it. I have been teaching Ts to make Puppets
A3- sometimes, as adults, I find we tend 2 overthink things- kids can amaze us w/almost anything if we give them the chance
Just in time for the rest of the conversation. Welcome.
we use junk, literally junk lying around
A3: I started asking for boxes when I shop at Costco now. Just to have in my room.
Good reminder that can be just giving Ss chance to create "show what you know" of their choice https://t.co/tczRrb87cR
A3 - Give students choice to show what they learned. Allow them to make something that represents the topic.
A3 is an easy free way to bring in making
When they have no fear of failure, and the freedom to explore, amazing happens. https://t.co/aGYg22V122
A3- sometimes, as adults, I find we tend 2 overthink things- kids can amaze us w/almost anything if we give them the chance
A3 I wrote grants for big stuff.
Yes to this! Maker isn’t about flash it’s about function and creativity. https://t.co/EzZAPTJBaB
. A3: Maker doesn't have to mean tech. Teaching crochet or paper airplanes can get your Ss thinking if you do it right.
that's what the real world is like
your school cafeteria will have plenty
A2 Making needs to be embedded but it's going to take some leaders in all campuses to push others to let go.
It maybe hard to start working together across multiple subjects, but maybe something can start grassroots
A3 integrates *making* into every History classroom. You will love what your students do.
A3- we starts participating in the & it was amazing what kids can do with something as basic as cardboard
As far as materials go, asking is the key. I have always been so enriched when I tell ppl I’m a T https://t.co/39HfFFZVUb
A3) "Making" does not always require materials. Have Ss use & imagination using oral, written, creative, or technical expression
I love dollar tree, I get all of my maker supplies, we also take recyclable donations
I love dollar tree, I get all of my maker supplies, we also take recyclable donations
A3: the responses I'm reading here really confirm how much we need electives that lend themselves to MAKING JUST SAYING
We have found cereal or cracker boxes have the best and easiest cardboard for prototyping.
A2: Personally Makerspace is embedded. But generally iThink it can be used for both Enrichment+ content as a pedagogical approach.
A3: I also think the space can be amazing if they know they can “use" it.Don’t let it be another place with rules about the tools
Thinking about the NGSS engineering challenges to up the rigor of
A3 if you can't figure out how to put making in you classroom let me know. It isn't hard
Seriously, Nathan will help you figure it out https://t.co/HLa0YdjzSo
A3 if you can't figure out how to put making in you classroom let me know. It isn't hard
A3 look at what's out there & 'make' it fit what your doing. Open ended options for kids makes planning easier.
that's how you exclude those Ss who need it the most
Yep! We don't take tests in the real world. We design & develop plans, projects, products, presentations
A3 You may want to start with building a maker's mindset & practicing fast prototyping and develop creative confidence.
My view of making materials has shifted, while at Black Label last week, I wanted the cardboard boxes from lunch
A2 "Making" should span subjects often. Creation leads to great opportunites (Math to build, writing to market, science to refine)
I taught HS Ss to crochet as an intro to industrial revolution!
A3 do a lot more with paper than tech these days
will hopefully bring engineering in to our sci classrooms - so we need to figureout
A3 Consider getting items from donations and garage sales. Students learn about the construction process through deconstruction
And my favorite! So passionate abt & comp sci in elementary ed! https://t.co/frEhDOscF5
A3 is an easy free way to bring in making
. what is your favorite paper thing?
Huge part of the making a space. Ts must experience the freedom so they can recreate it for Ss. https://t.co/8XmzFFmOt2
A3 You may want to start with building a maker's mindset & practicing fast prototyping and develop creative confidence.
so you have your students building with half of my tweets?
It's these Ss who need another platform that allows them 2 share that they get it & it's not with paper https://t.co/Rc8CGVLZSG
Agree 100%! So many Ss are not allowed electives for various reason ie behind, or must go to ELD. That is not ok.
Q4 is coming very soon.
Look for tweet!
Yes! Admin need to support the experimentation Ts need
A3, A lot of "making" can be done w household materials. Everyday materials + open-ended tasks spark great creativity
is what I get the most bang with. Paper characters and paper minecraft
I gotta run . Thank you for moderating. Have a great week everyone!
sadly the longer kids go without it the harder it is for them
A3- access to Pinterest would be fun for the Ss who don't feel as creative as others- we also want to give Ss guidance if needed
Just got rolls of craft paper that will be hung across tables (like paper towel dispenser) - so excited.
-----------------> Q4 is coming very soon.
Look for tweet!
----->Q4 What tools, technology, or materials do you need for a makerspace?
if they stop created by 3rd grade it is really hard to get them back it
Ldrs to encourage and train...many Ts/admin have hard time seeing how making=lrning not the fun thing after lrning
Hey ladies of the . I'm headed to . I'd love to share the costs of lodging w/someone and maybe carpooling from SoCal
As and would echo,”If the Ts are free to try, the Ss will too.” Ts need to see As https://t.co/cpJaJ8xFcQ
Yes! Admin need to support the experimentation Ts need
they are able to use an alarming number
A4 - Lots of hot glue guns, cardboard and paper towel rolls.
A4: Anything will do! Space, wifi, a device, and odds and ends
I think making helps us put kids back in driver seat in ways that are more needed than ever. Q2
every project we build has to have a tutorial written.
A4 time, support, & an open mind
A4: Convertible space would be great. A place in the back of class where desks can be tossed aside and real innovation can happen.
YES this is the land of voice and choice https://t.co/1vb4iD8oBO
I think making helps us put kids back in driver seat in ways that are more needed than ever. Q2
A3 I start by collecting others trash (your trash is my treasure), ideas come later
we need to push for & shift to authentic assessments
Imagination is a great tool. The more technology the less creativity.
A4: One of the reasons I loved ...cardboard, duct tape, hot glue guns, & imagination
A4: Tape, lots and lots of tape
A4 - Open minded teachers and students who are willing to turn whatever you hand them into something new it's a mindset not stuff
A4 - Lots of LEGOS!!! (I steal them from my own kid’s collection)
Can’t see it happening past the ooh ahh phase w/ out these essentials. https://t.co/XVgbigU5Pu
A4 time, support, & an open mind
is now trending in USA, ranking 27
A4 ignore this question if you are making a buying list
A4 - as a tech coordinator this isn't a great answer...but I don't know if you really need tech for a
quit hating on paper it is amazing tech
A4: Perhaps network with local contractors that have extra materials. or
. I just set up an interactive bulletin board in the hall
A4: What you need can be minimal want..... Well THAT is a whole different ball game 😉
yes!starting point is helpful! Important to value the art of collaborationvs.copying. We learn best from each other.
A4:Could be anything--not abt the stuff. More important to focus on developing the mindset than the space https://t.co/l2IsYq3UMB
----->Q4 What tools, technology, or materials do you need for a makerspace?
🎨✂️✒️📐📏Art? Math? Origami would be fun + educational, too.
Start simple before you start investing in bigger pieces love this! https://t.co/1alR4ZYYPM
My view of making materials has shifted, while at Black Label last week, I wanted the cardboard boxes from lunch
I may have this while thing confused. MAKER doesn't necessarily mean BUILDER but creator?
A4 tools should reflect the goals and current projects of school to start out
A4: We have 1:1 ipads so I introduce my Ts and Ss to a "digital maker space" w/ creation apps in addition to physical space
Fun conversation. Got to head out early. Sleep time, and then back to work tomorrow. Have a great week all!
tech for research and writing, and...maybe..3D printing!
HUGE! You can have all the parts, but without the right mindset from educators, supplies collect dust! https://t.co/v3a0WGE7yB
A4 - Open minded teachers and students who are willing to turn whatever you hand them into something new it's a mindset not stuff
Yep! Tech not necessary for . Can start with cardboard and tape. https://t.co/ripjBS6b1q
A4 - as a tech coordinator this isn't a great answer...but I don't know if you really need tech for a
A4 - last year, our 1st year, we had legos, pipe cleaners, craft sticks, crayons, paper plates, stacking cups, hot wheels, etc
Yes, from non tech to high tech.
A creative teacher to unpack the standards to find the rigor and relevance maker-lite will stop this constructive moment
Maybe, but they don't need a 3D printer, they build from other materials right?
A4 the first tool you need is an imagination. It is the one skill you need to be modeling for your students
I think that these things would work well for High School Ss as well
Def not! My classrm makerspace was a mess of recycled trash, glue sticks and tape :)
I would wholeheartedly agree with that...give students chance to create...w/ minds as well as hands.
A4- along w/ support Ss need to feel safe in the class so they can share their thoughts/ideas to plan and create freely
I want to see this! Please send me a video :)
We HS peeps get fuzzy here but no. No Tech stil creativity & artifact creation #1 https://t.co/aKd47iDTDO
A4 - as a tech coordinator this isn't a great answer...but I don't know if you really need tech for a
A4 seems like anything is a supply that fits in...we're going to need a lot of them too.
too many places are buying stuff without the end user in mind. Ends up sitting in corner
A4 Heart and an open mind is all Ss need from you.
totally agree!! Mindset is key.
It might depending on the circumstances
we totally walk from tech during our Makers Week - the week b4 T-giving & then we straight into month of code
A4: cardboard, tape,imagination,growth mindset, patience.
thanks for the follow! I love having new ideas come from discussion amongst my PLN
A4 An innovator's mindset 1st! Cardboard, rando "stuff", glue guns for low tech. Circuitry, 3D printers, and more for high tech.
Yes, and people do need ideas about best scissors, hot glue guns, etc. You do need some stuff.
Wasted resources! Because someone saw a thermoformer in another lab and had to have it! Why is the key! https://t.co/Tw6eeSx7F3
too many places are buying stuff without the end user in mind. Ends up sitting in corner
I like the idea of going non-tech. I'm just thinking it can be with tech too.
A4 - Creativity and a plan to inspire all the Ss is a great tool to have.
this year, we hope to have a lots of cardboard
Do people actually ask you for help or compare Makerspace in conversation?
Ppl= Schoolsite 🍎Ts.
Din't buy cheap scissors. It will come back to haunt you
Yes, to get the makerspace up to SHOW they have one rather than constructing the space WITH the kids.
I MUST HAVE ONE! what is that anyway?
I MUST HAVE ONE! what is that anyway?
sewing, knitting, cooking....important "soft skill" we will always need. How will Ss learn?
Agreed! The more students of all income groups can bring supplies the better. Milk jugs and cereal boxes https://t.co/CVPbwVavOd
Yes, and people do need ideas about best scissors, hot glue guns, etc. You do need some stuff.
buy lots of tape packing and scotch. Keep all the cardboard you can
My buddy and I have had good discussions around. Start the kids in an empty space. Have them build it
-----------------> Q5 is up next.
Look for tweet!
There it is...bring it all back to WHY! Get Ss involved in determining what you put in your makerspace! https://t.co/txmPUw26wX
Wasted resources! Because someone saw a thermoformer in another lab and had to have it! Why is the key! https://t.co/Tw6eeSx7F3
too many places are buying stuff without the end user in mind. Ends up sitting in corner
I agree. The coolest thing is that, no matter what resources, Ss & Ts could work together 2 create just about anything@mrs_howell
I am not an expert and I have not even tried it, but want to this year. However, I am a TL at site
I know everyone is falling in love with coding for kids - but is it truly a activity?
Helps them to respect the materials in the space more!
Definitely! It's really easy if you use the resources from Hour of Code, which were built for beginners.
Yep--big issue. Purchases can only be made after needs determined by user!
I must have a refrigerator box. That is one my wish list
Yes, because you can create programmable things to solve problems , NO if you dont make with it
That is what I am doing this year at three of our elementary schools https://t.co/7A6sd53eIb
My buddy and I have had good discussions around. Start the kids in an empty space. Have them build it
we have coding two weeks AFTER makers faire
I think we can have digital and analog makerspaces.
-----> Q5 How might you run a makerspace or maker experience in a way that allows children freedom of creativity?
I think that learning to CODE will be my own personal PD I want to get into this year.
A3 "Making" can start small. 10 minutes of creative time, an idea journal for Ss or just a whiteboard for ideas.
actually the answer is storage space. You will need a state room
. A4: Look around your community. What materials do businesses in your area make in bulk and/or just throw away?
Now you are talking about making it real for students! Creativity over looks you should see my bike trailer…
A5: Switch from teacher to coach or mentor
and cut you! Get the good stuff, learn from the early adopters. That is much of the point of this chat tonight
That which has not been open to and for discovery and experimentation...
seldom gets implemented. Create space for mindshifts...
Love that - as a science teacher and parent with a garage full of cardboard, tape and glitter (2 girls)
A5 - Every year I do a LEGO club where 3-8th Ss are free to come and create. We share ideas, have battles and just play.
Build local partnerships, share the limelight, generate some press
We totally walk away from tech w/ makers faire -- and then we plunge into coding - for me-a good balance
A5 pick a topic and let them build toward it. Or if you are insane like me let them pick both
or even learn along side Ss!
No adults allowed in. (I realize this might be a liability issue.)
coding can be activity if used to create something (astronomy charts, robots?) I code and make apps, webs
If you're coding to create something and/or solve problem...I vote yes, making activity
A5 Involve kids in planning and designing it!
(Baton Rouge, United States) -ranked trend:
Good answer :) I just see so much copy/paste and then change a number to see what happens. to me anyway
Would love to keep in touch about how this goes.
A5. Have a running list of needs that students can add to.
A5: Until they are confident in creativity, build onto existing ideas or at least have a challenge. uses a week.
on the eve of our admin retreat, I was lurking some & saw you mentioned glitter. would be so proud of you
it is always seems the opposite way when I am working with schools
5️⃣ factors determine Makerspace: 1️⃣whether it's single or multiple subject
2️⃣subject if single
3️⃣Gr level
4️⃣ 💰
5️⃣space
🤓
A5- even if u don't have time, if a T is willing you could open the class during lunch or recess- let it begin as fun and a choice
. but we could say "create a safe class community" (if you dont know how, ask a writing teacher )
OMG shelves. Lots of shelves to store student projects in the making!
A5: Give students a prompt or challenge and get out of their way. Students are far more capable than we think.
A5 - Start projects. Great chance for Ss to make innovative solutions to everyday problems in their lives.
so many stop before that even, it is scary how little making is in intermediate grades though
Def not! My classrm makerspace was a mess of recycled trash, glue sticks and tape :) MORE >> https://t.co/pSuQJ5rK2K
Definitely, I'd love input and advice from you and
you need in-process bins for student projects
Oh, & I left out I'm in Montana, not Idaho, and lurking Not bad huh?
A5. Let them know from the beginning, that the space is theirs.
A4 Creation station made of recycled & repurposed goods from home. This is a game created by my daughter. https://t.co/nF8DQG1Vyz
A5: Step-back. A little bit more. Little bit more. There you go. Now the kids are free to be creative.
A5: I would make sure I am monitoring the area. Safety is the biggest concern. If they break rules they are out.
A5 Ask BIG open ended questions to inspire creativity. Even better... helps students to ask BIG open ended questions.
A5: Stop teaching, get out of the way and just do the MAKER activity
Dude it is Dayson. The master of gaming
A4: Basic tools & tech can help inspire though much can be sought based on the nature of Ss projects. Natural evolution of supply.
Under instruct https://t.co/jQIv8a4q2G
A5: Step-back. A little bit more. Little bit more. There you go. Now the kids are free to be creative.
Welcome brother! You had a of your own last year!
Well, purchasing takes A VERY LONG time in public schools. That is the problem.
It is happening! The stuff are doing at their schools! kills is https://t.co/S5240IjCIH
so many stop before that even, it is scary how little making is in intermediate grades though
A5 That is what I was thinking, combine with https://t.co/lpLj7W9MgG
A5 - Start projects. Great chance for Ss to make innovative solutions to everyday problems in their lives.
couldn't sleep so decided to see what was going on w/ . Lucky me, topic is .
ok dude I am out. Good questions tonight
I did, but I started out by making the same mistakes mentioned here... chasing the latest tech item.
Some projects are HUGE. Very few would fit in a bin. But that is my problem. ;)
A5: creativity needs some constraints. Run the space by providing some but by leaving some things open. https://t.co/43vgkSpG8H
-----> Q5 How might you run a makerspace or maker experience in a way that allows children freedom of creativity?
So proud! I didn't mention dry shampoo for though
I have been wanting to visit quantum academy for some time now, perhaps I can make it happen this year!? https://t.co/dJAk1QLpDl
Would love to keep in touch about how this goes.
A5:Problem-based learning provides good opp for open-ended creative problem solving https://t.co/6xo14NwACg
-----> Q5 How might you run a makerspace or maker experience in a way that allows children freedom of creativity?
YES!!! I was sitting here thinking that if I had a classroom, & Would be part of it
Great advice! Publicity is the key! Gets schl board members and D.O. to sit up and take notice!
When a students builds a tardis... however if the tardis worked it would solve the storage problem.
. A5: Make sure the Ss can see each others' progress a little. Part of creativity is borrowing/adapting others' ideas.
. I run coding as a cheerleader. Ss are way past my skill level Best Ts are facilitators of greatness
develop a community on ongoing sharing, share the process more than the product
Did you 👂🏼 (⏰kid's) interview. He said he lost his creativity + sense of safety.
A5 select a time when your class becomes a maker space, I monitor but I don't interfere
Just sayin... you all are amazing! So amazing I'm way behind in the chat which is making moderating a challenge! :) Love this
Yes... I want them to exhibit how much more they know than me. THE BEST https://t.co/zahgFg6w03
. I run coding as a cheerleader. Ss are way past my skill level Best Ts are facilitators of greatness
A5-U r right on- Ss can learn a ton from just observing. They don't have 2 b making something 2 b doing something@cvWise
I had a 2nd grader building one out of paper... He didn't know what it was called but it was
Best advice. Step away and let kids do their thing. https://t.co/7Guu35x3Nd
A5: Stop teaching, get out of the way and just do the MAKER activity
---------------------> Prepare for Q6 from
-----> Q6 How might you prepare to have a “safe” learning environment in your makerspace?
Instead of "constraints" try parameters. the is what matters. Can't control creativity
We would not know we were behind because you are doing a gr8 job & the ?s are relevant :-)
A6: NORMS!!! Ones that kids CREATE
Love that! More questions than when the project started
Yes! Be present and inquire.
In my exp. some HS are afraid to fail this doesn’t wrk. I know what you mean, but we beat creativity out. https://t.co/GnNr4Tw0V4
A5: Step-back. A little bit more. Little bit more. There you go. Now the kids are free to be creative.
Agree 100% https://t.co/Jf2ksT0Euq
Just sayin... you all are amazing! So amazing I'm way behind in the chat which is making moderating a challenge! :) Love this
A6 - Show Ss that you are willing to fail. I learned Arduino and made a blinking LED hat to show I too can learn from failure.
A6 Don't underestimate safety. I made school-wide makerspace safety videos. Super important to re-watch and review.
I would say yes to this, but without some context the making means less
A5 Don't tell students what or how to https://t.co/FNB9BZ3Tt5 them find a why and then step back and wait for the magic.
A6. Have "certifications" necessary to use some of the equipment. Also a great way to let students lead as they become experts.
A6: And accountability to NORMS
Write local grants@Rotary or club or ed foundation
Unfortunately, we don't usually spend enough time in the shadow of big questions to engage, create greater creative capacity…
That sounds like how I organized my Minecraft elective. Ss mentored and taught lessons, too! https://t.co/HXDg4RUmAW
. I run coding as a cheerleader. Ss are way past my skill level Best Ts are facilitators of greatness
A6 Also, help students understand the importance of organization in the makerspace. Org of their project and the space in general.
A6 healthy classroom culture where Ss feel they are on the same team. & demonstrate how to handle "fail" or mistakes.
Just ignore the spam and pat yourselves on the back is all that tonight, great sharing
I am way behind...can't keep up
Yep. My Ss hate to float out an original thought. Give them practice w their peers 1st.
Q6 How might you prepare to have a “safe” learning environment in your makerspace?
Structure is critical... https://t.co/D0BgL6ye4E
A6 Also, help students understand the importance of organization in the makerspace. Org of their project and the space in general.
A6 Safety norms for use of tools & equipment are necessary but kids get that. It helps them feel comfortable in their space.
You're doing great...but it does go fast some times!
A6: Ss Working Agreements (Norms), Structure in place, Critique Guidelines, TRUST.
. yes! We don't like to be micro-managed. Don't micro-manage S creativity.
. yes! We don't like to be micro-managed. Don't micro-manage S creativity.
. Show the Ss that failure is OK. Fail in front of them and model how to fix it. (I'm a klutz so easy for me.)
A6: create a class community and value and showcase all the knowledge made in the room
A6: Fail huge in front of them! Make a mess and then clean it up. Show don’t tell!
A6 ground rules and procedures.
A6 - Kids brainstorm what they need to be safe in the environment both using the tools and taking creative risks - driven by stds
We have to create the space and environments that engage our sense of curiosity and wonder...
https://t.co/OzfdTrYMYn
--------------------> will be sending out Q7 soon.
----->Q7 What are some maker ideas or resources you have tried (or want to try) in your classroom or school?
A6: Have them create a list of norms. Then they have to follow theiir own rules.
great idea! Also, I think more Ts needs to be open for students time. Learning happens outside the classroom too
A6 Establish 1. responsibility with freedom and choice, and 2. equity in voice.
iDidn't send this. My fully charged🔋⌨just died. Magically.
Agree - the answer is to step back & give them space/time/opportunities (and of course to be there when needed)
It is in there, they don’t know how to let it out! Same goes for some Ts. We As crushed them in CST era. https://t.co/SPrtZrIRaJ
Yep. My Ss hate to float out an original thought. Give them practice w their peers 1st.
A7 We used design thinking process to create a cardboard arcade for kids at Medical Therapy Unit.
a teacher's job in a making classroom is to help kids connect the making to ideas, context matters
Oops that was actually me. :) https://t.co/MOWqzxlYdy
A7 We used design thinking process to create a cardboard arcade for kids at Medical Therapy Unit.
A7: I want to focus on here and start programming in my math classes
A5 Give Ss the space to freely imagine & experiment. Even if their 1st path isn't a "success" they'll learn much from the process
A6 I try to partner with upper grades and invite Ss teachers to work in my class
A7 & help Ss practice verbalizing their thoughts before speaking in front of the class.
A7 Can't wait to try "Novel Engineering" where you design a solution to a problem in the book and rewrite the end w your design!
That is awesome! Wish I would have seen that project and process! https://t.co/Uk5ibixUke
Oops that was actually me. :) https://t.co/MOWqzxlYdy
A7 We used design thinking process to create a cardboard arcade for kids at Medical Therapy Unit.
In 15 minutes I am driving to LA
A7: I want my students to play with free free edu version this year.
True.Maybe help schools remember space canB work in progress There's always another new toy 2buy
This year's collaborative design thinking project with MTU might be cardboard wheelchair costumes.
yeah I think it would work for primary
A6: the beauty of maker spaces is that there's no right or wrong. That makes it feel safe. https://t.co/ldyc67F1IS
Q6 How might you prepare to have a “safe” learning environment in your makerspace?
. Yes, we are building balloons for around the world in 80 days
We are doing a school wide Junk to Funk maker project trimester 1 and Cains Arcade project trimester 2
building X doesn't mean as much much if kids don't understand/identify the concept they are learning
Cardboard arcade, Design Thinking in a medical unit. Now that is making! https://t.co/ibn4cflfrH
Oops that was actually me. :) https://t.co/MOWqzxlYdy
A7 We used design thinking process to create a cardboard arcade for kids at Medical Therapy Unit.
I agree. Sometimes it's hard to find a MAKER activity that deals with math, factoring a trinomial
There's a LOT more than storage that's necessary for .
I'd love to bring in design thinkers, artists, creators from the community - ss would dig that and be inspired
Dash and Dot and Little Bits last year ... adding Bloxels, Osmo, and Sphero Sprk this year. Any advice? https://t.co/eTenQWaZOA
A7 Want to start sewing and hydroponics l. Both have endless possibilities
--------------------> Q8 coming soon from
A7: Perhaps dedicate a corner in my classroom. However, withh 40 desks that is pretty hard.
Alright... I'm out. Ss first day back tomorrow. Planning to be on campus by 6AM. It was a pleasurable 1st chat experience
iThink those standards are particular to 3rdGr. IKnow bc I student taught 3rd + have worked w/varying Gr levels.
A7: I want to make a mobil makerspace for checkout to all my Ts and a huge cardboard corral.
----------------------> Q8 What will you make with your students this year?
----------------------> Q8 What will you make with your students this year?
What about after giving the students a straw building challenge they study geometric figures in buildings https://t.co/S5wiMeZu40
I agree. Sometimes it's hard to find a MAKER activity that deals with math, factoring a trinomial
Bet the team may have some ideas!
Be sure to follow some new educators from the chat tonight to help grow your PLN
can't believe kiddos ask for help to sew on a button...
A8. We're making awesome.
A8 Hoping to collaborate with the Medical Therapy Unit so Ss can design thinking process to create cardboard wheelchair costumes.
