Q1: We all have barriers to using tech: access, time, knowledge, etc. What do you do to overcome these barriers or what have you seen others do? #AOBedchat
A1 - I've slowly learned to ask for things when I need them - "would you be willing to donate?, etc." If you wait for the barrier to fall, you'll be waiting a long time! #AOBedchat
A1: Many Ts want to use new tech, but are afraid of things going wrong mid-lesson. Having an Instructional Coach to collaborate with is one way of ensuring a successful event for all. #AOBEdChat
One way to overcome not having enough technology is using centers to break up the number of students who need to use the tech at once. Plus it keeps the novelty effect for the students! #AOBEdchat
#AOBEdChat This is Donna Hargens - the Superintendent of Catholic Schools in the Archdiocese of Baltimore. The Department of Catholic Schools exists to support schools and teachers. Thanks to our moderator Amy Pietrowski.
Meet the kids where they are. Once had an S trouble typing on the Chromebook. Asked if he could type it on his phone. I have never seen anyone type as fast as him. #AOBEdChat
#AOBEdChat A1 One of the barriers to using technology is thinking of it as the end rather than the means to the end. Technology is a tool. Start with what you want students to learn, and then apply the right tool.
Q1- The incorporation and use of technology can be a tremendous asset to your classroom but you need to prepare by testing everything ahead of time and always having a Plan B in the event things don’t work out. TRying something new without a dry run can be a recipe for disaster.
#AoBEdChat Q1 Teachers in our school are learning to reach out to other teachers to overcome the barriers of time and knowledge. We have several teachers who are valuable resources in our midst, including @amylpie@AOBedchat
Q1: We all have barriers to using tech: access, time, knowledge, etc. What do you do to overcome these barriers or what have you seen others do? #AOBedchat
Amy Santini...I currently teach 4th and 5th grade Science. #aobedchat
A1: If limited tech tools are available, partner up students. Teach basic troubleshooting "tricks" to students.
A1: I'm trying flipped classroom for 8th grade math this year. When we use devices in the classroom, we always say, "Technology is a TOOL, not a toy!" I follow tech-friendly Ts on Twitter & have learned so much, like using @Flipgrid and doing #BookSnaps. #ChatCrasher#AOBedchat
Q2: Which subject areas do you find it easiest to use technology in? Which ones pose a problem for you? Please respond to another if you have an idea for them! #AOBedchat
A2 - Not 1 subj. easiest, but more a pattern across subj. Most VISUAL aspects align easily to compelling tech use IMO. So much of our #edtech is wrapped up in display-based equipment. Double-edged sword though, b/c too easy to make it all display & no interactive. #AOBedchat
A2: My guess is that many of you will say math! I love math + tech! There are great interactive sites out there. @nctm and @mlcmath are two of my favorites. #AOBEdChat
I struggle the most with incorporating technology into my religion lessons. But love to use it quite often if LA, specifically using Spelling City, Newsela, and Flipgrid! #AOBEdchat
Overcoming the "fear of failure" I think is huge for Ts. They need reassurance from admin that failure won't be held against them, & that we'd rather see them experiment, fail, & grow #AOBedchat
A2 As I have a strong background in ELA, I find this the easiest content area to use and integrate technology. Students can collaborate on research projects and use the technology to share their learning. #AOBEdChat
Q2: Which subject areas do you find it easiest to use technology in? Which ones pose a problem for you? Please respond to another if you have an idea for them! #AOBedchat
A2- Social Studies!!! Lots of good map resources, access to primary sources, formative assessments, etc. Problems- Can't really think of one. #AOBEdChat
Good point Nancy. There needs to be a culture of trying something and then when it doesn't work knowing that that is helpful and informs the next thing you try. #AOBEdChat
I love using technology in Science whether it’s coding, 3D printing, group collaboration, simulations, etc. I love seeing other schools share their ideas and lessons and learn from so many great coworkers as well! @StAugustineElem@mrskaplanSAS#AOBEdchat

My students love using iPads. Spelling City, abcya, and Fry sight words are their favorites. We just started using SeeSaw and that is quickly becoming a fan favorite! SeeSaw can be used in ALL subjects!
#AOBedchat
I find Padlet good for showing examples of categories, such as social justice, etc. Also might want to look at @SutoriApp for creating timelines, stories, thought-processes. #AoBEdChat
In reply to
@missjohnston811, @AOBedchat, @SutoriApp
I find the easiest subject to integrate technology is the one that is a natural fit for the standard or situation. A "forced" use of technology for technology's sake can be a distraction from the actual standards being taught. #AOBedchat
A2: Tech has become relatively easy for me to use with my Science classes. So many great sites like Mystery Science, Brain Pop, EdPuzzle, have every topic. #aobedchat
Q3: When working across disciplines, what topics lend themselves to a #STREAM model? (Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Art, Math) #AOBedchat
I saw that @BarbInNebraska suggested that Ss make a @Flipgrid video at home that shows their favorite Catholic icon or saint or religious artifact in their house. GREAT IDEA! #AOBedchat
In reply to
@amylpie, @missjohnston811, @AOBedchat, @Flipgrid, @BarbInNebraska, @Flipgrid
A2: We use iPads quite often in our ELA small groups 👍🏼 I love the Letter School app for letter practice/review...Ss love it too!! @StAugustineElem#AOBedchat
A3: Topics I'm familiar with that work well with STREAM are Electricity unit for 4th grade, Space unit for 5th grade. I want students to be in awe with God's creation, so we discuss how creative HE is with all we're learning about. #aobedchat
I make @Google Forms quizzes to check for understanding. I also just started using @edpuzzle which lets you upload videos, put ?s at certain points in the videos for Ss to answer, & keeps score for you. #AOBedchat

@mmdetrick, @googleclassroom, @Google, @edpuzzle
I find that all new technology is hard and difficult at first, but then I remember that’s exactly how students feel when we ask them to learn new things. Students constantly ask for to help them learn is more technology, so embrace the challenge! #growthmindset#AOBEdchat
Q4: What physical resources are available to use in your school? (Chromebooks, iPads, Computer Lab, Maker Space) What is your go to? Do you have a favorite activity to share? #AOBedchat
A4: At #sotiknights we are incredibly lucky to have all of the above. MS is 1:1 iPads, so we revolve most every task around them. #appleteacher#AOBEdChat
A3: Anything! REAL WORLD problems to solve, like our school cafeteria had a squirrel that was sneaking into a hole and eating the food in the kitchen. Ss designed and built a cage to catch it, all while learning to be good stewards of creation (hence the R in #STREAM) #AOBedchat
#AOBedchat I agree TRuST is essential! I am learning all the time. If I fail through the effort, I have no problem asking “how to” again from my peers and faculty.
We are very blessed to have Chromebooks, iPads, and a computer lab at our school. I tend to lean towards using the Chromebooks most often. I love to use Google Classroom to organize information for the kids to access inside and outside of school! #AOBEdchat
I also love to use Explain Everything to create review videos for the students to access through Google Classroom at home as support for homework and studying! #AOBEdchat
A4 - At @SFASchoolBalt , we are 1:1 w/Chromebooks Gr.2-8 & have iPads PK-1. SMARTprojector in each room. Three 3D printers, 20+ drones, 20+ VEX IQ robots, @DiscoveryEd Techbooks #SFAsoars#AOBedchat
A4- 1:1 Chromebooks in MS, 1:1 iPads in 5th and below. Got the Makerspace. Always go to Chromebooks. Ss stoked to do anything where they can create and post. #AoBEdChat
A4: A set of ChromeBooks live in my classroom but are shared by all. A set of iPads live in the library and are shared by all. A MakerSpace exists, but we have yet to install the LEGO WALL. #AOBedchat
A4: In my K classroom we have a set of 8 iPads (+6 minis) for Ss small groups. We have interactive projectors w/ChromeBooks and ChromeCast in the classroom as well. We just upgraded to the new projectors so I’m excited to get that going 😀 @StAugustineElem#AOBedchat
Q4-#AoBEdChat -in the lower grades at School of the Incarnation each class has a set of 10 iPads to keep in their classrooms. There is also ample opportunity to request to borrow iPads so you can have a classroom set if you need one for a whole class activity.
#AOBedchat STM-STC we have & use everything listed in Q4, plus Apple TV, Chromecast, large screen display in each classroom. My go to is Chromebooks & Chromecast
Many educators can make a great lesson plan. The true talent of an educator is the ability to adjust it to the needs of students when it is actually taught live. #realtalk#teachergoals
A4: My go to, must have for modeling in K is my document camera! It’s worth it’s weight in gold in early childhood! Such great visual support or our young learners 😀 @StAugustineElem#AOBedchat
Love Chromecast! My Ss love to share. They feel so professional and presentations flow so quickly. I also can sit in the back of the room and monitor while I cast. #AoBEdChat
I also love to use Explain Everything to create review videos for the students to access through Google Classroom at home as support for homework and studying! #AOBEdchat
Holy Cow! I worked in #adwteach for two years and it was rare to find a school with so much tech. I am astounded by the resources in the #AOBedchat schools!

A5: My hack is a gmail one! Each time I get an email from someone new, I set up a filter to automatically label any more emails from that address. This also works with notifications from @GoogleForEdu Classroom #AOBEdChat
#AOBEdChat I appreciate what Joe Oleszczuk is doing to ensure that there is an infrastructure in place to support the use of technology. It doesn't matter how many devices you have without the infrastructure to support it. Q4
Favorite hack so far is scheduling my posts on Google Classroom over the weekend to align with my lessons and having one less thing to worry about at the beginning of each day! #AOBEdchat
A5: One hack is to make sure students always log in on the same device every time (our Chromebooks have number stickers). I do a lesson on care of devices the first week of school, have them log in, choose a pic, then after that all they enter is their password. #aobedchat
@ArchbaltSchools#AOBedchat Wow! Look at how blessed we are with such educational resources within our @archbalt schools! It is so nice reading these tweets...
Q5: As a middle school science teacher, I use whatever technological apps I can find. Today I started using the Create-a-graph website for graphing activities. It seems to have a good response after the first day #AoBEdChat

A5- I synced my phone to my school Google account, Sometimes, an S will email me a question in class/post something in Google Classroom and I can easily get to it on the sly in the middle of class. #AoBEdChat

Kids are generally tested on #reading comprehension as a separate skill, divorced from any subject they've learned about, and that favors kids who come to school with more prior knowledge https://t.co/4uxxIo98Br#edchat#engchat#elachat
#aobedchat A4 Our students love the hands on activities of the green screen, Sphero Robots, and 3D printers & MakerSpace. Some 3rd grade Ss learned how to make their teammate disappear when using the green screen. @amylpie@AOBedchat

Students explaining to other students how they solved a math problem, for example, via a video is a great strategy. It is a way for students to verbalize what they are thinking and for other students to benefit. #AOBEdChat
A5: I am also trained using the Towson University Maryland Learning Lab @tuSTEMcenter. They have great lab resources for secondary science teachers. #AoBEdChat
I like keeping mine in draft form, and if I am out of the building with another grade on a field trip, I show them how I post to Classroom using my phone. A case of schadenfreude by Ss I am with #AobEdChat
The document camera allows my students to "present" their work on a larger scale for the class to see. They love coming up and "teaching" their classmates!
#AOBedchat
#AoBEdChat A6 Google Classroom has nearly eliminated our need to print Ss' assignments. Parents can easily view assignments online. With the ability to grade and comment on each student’s assignment online, we don’t even need to print rubrics/grading sheets. @amylpie@AOBedchat
I am using s’more for weekly message to Ts. Saves paper. Easy to email out. Also put faculty handbook in a Live Binder online rather than having it copied. #AOBedchat
A6- I can honestly say that Google Classroom has been a game changer. A close follow-up would be email. A bunch of us old-timers can tell you the frustration of trying to contact home about an issue before email existed. #AoBEdChat
Agree! And I know so much more could be done to emphasize the effectiveness of using Google Classroom and tech in general for differentiation! #equity#fair#KidsDeserveIt#AOBedchat
Q6 -Google Classroom! I post all my material, video tutorials, assignments, rubrics & instructions. Students submit everything through Google Classroom & are able to access work even when they are absent. Excellent differentiation tool to work at their own pace!
Technology is a tool! Agree!! A flipped classroom makes perfect sense. One-way can be done on video leaving precious classroom time for interaction. #AOBEdChat
A6: I love the way that I can share Ss digital products with their parents via @Seesaw. It really brings them into the classroom. #AOBedchat#saynotomondayfolders

A6: Email changed our school worlds, just like Google Classroom is changing our teaching worlds. There was ONE classroom with internet when I first started teaching in a Catholic school 18 years ago. NOW, we are globally connected disciples. It is awesome. #AOBedchat
This may sound simple but, my Epson projector allows me to project any and all resources from my comouter. I can't imagine not having this resource!

A7: My #eduwin came with using @Flipgrid when I asked my Ss to EXPLAIN their thinking when solving a math problem. Ss used that time TO SHINE in their videos: wearing costumes, using accents, & crazy digital video effects. PLUS they explained their math thinking. #AOBedchat
A7- S had a question about how British students viewed the American Revolution. I immediately tweeted it out. Got a really good response from a complete stranger in a few hours. When I showed the kids the next day, heads exploded. #eduwin#AoBEdChat
#AOBEdChat Virtual Collaboration is authentic and the way our students will work during most of their adult lives. So glad we are having them experience this in school.
Just today, my 7th grade is preparing for their “shark tank” presentations on Wednesday. They are making “21st century microscopes” in our makerspace. They can either build their own or use the tinkercad to 3D print. #AobEdChat
A7: I loved watching our 8th graders 3D design in @tinkercad and print our school crest! Students were researching our school history and creating a keepsake before graduating. #AOBedchat@StAugustineElem
Q7 - My EduWin is being able to bring experts into the classroom virtually. Our Library Media Center has a video conferencing system that allows for seamless virtual communication with individuals from all around the globe.
Q8: Make a friend! We are here to connect with others in @ArchbaltSchools! Did someone's tweet "speak" to you tonight? Tag them in your answer and make a commitment to connect your classrooms/schools! #AOBedchat

I haven’t met a teacher using @Flipgrid that hasn’t pronounced it to be a major change in the way Ss interact in their classes. Thank you, #flipgridfever! #AOBedchat
