A1: Thinking about how to personalize learning is so much more than allowing every student to choose their own silent reading book. This graphic helps us think about it in more complex way. #HackLearninghttps://t.co/A3cweGAZDp
It is important to first ascertain how each student learns. Ask them what they want. Design your classroom along with your students to best facilitate their learning. My Learning Pages https://t.co/MFlrDcEYdB#hacklearning
A1: Mindset work with staff/teachers! Everyone needs to understand that students deserve voice & choice, and how they learn/express their learning doesn’t need to be in one particular way! #udl#mindset#HackLearning
A1: Keep learners at the center of all teaching & learning! Empower them with 21st C & SEL skills, facilitate ownership-nurture & support critical thinking skills #HackLearning
In their book, Learning Transformed, @E_Sheninger and @thomascmurray look at shifting how we support learning in many powerful ways. Check out the Table of Contents. #HackLearning
A1: Voice and choice! It’s so important for kids to feel invested in their learning. They make real connections when the outcome stems from their interests. #HackLearning
A1. It all begins with making the school feel like a place they want to be. If they’re not comfortable expresssing their ideas and taking ownership of their learning, personalization will never live to its fullest potential. #hacklearning
A1 We've been experimenting with having Ss choose learning targets from the curriculum & design the way that they'll show mastery of learning. Ss are super motivated! #HackLearning
A1: At the Secondary level I love the idea of academies! Students choose a path that prepares them for a career path. Skills, trades, college. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻#HackLearning
A1: Voice and choice! It’s so important for kids to feel invested in their learning. They make real connections when the outcome stems from their interests. #HackLearning
A1 we are working on standards-based planning so that every lesson is focused on life skills in our core area — no time to waste, so many gaps to fill ... focus on standards and learners ... how to fuse the 2 so that sts get it #HackLearning
A1: Right now, two of the schools in our district are currently part of the @KSDEredesign they were tasked with this exact challenge. It's been pretty cool watching it unfold. #HackLearning
A1. It all begins with making the school feel like a place they want to be. If they’re not comfortable expresssing their ideas and taking ownership of their learning, personalization will never live to its fullest potential. #hacklearning
A1 If we’re willing to be flexible about the form an assignment takes, we might think of new ways to fulfill its functions while also using it to help students understand and enact their values.
#HackLearning
A1 - Incorporating the use of the technology they use everyday, cellphones, also engages the students more nad makes them feel more comfortable. #hacklearning
A1: Are we designing lessons for students or for teachers? It's easier to grade a cookie-cutter assignment. More learning happens when students design their own learning experiences. #hacklearning
A1: Lrng experiences must be meaningful, engaging and based on best practice strategies. Teaching should be based on students learning, not checking off topics! #HackLearning
A1b: Who is doing the talking in your classroom? Students or teacher? That will tell you something about how personal & authentic the learning is. #hacklearning
Imp,emerging student choice, making the environment feel less like a prison and more like a place they want to be! White walls, humming lights, and rows of chairs? I wouldn’t want to sit like that. #hacklearning
A1: A shared vision and the means to get there. One way my previous school did this was having numerous parent meetings (done in other lang as well) on where the school was going & how it’s going to look like. #HackLearning

They are the "pilot" schools for the program; only 7 districts in the state were chosen. It will be fully launched this coming school year. For example, right now the high school is going to a flex-mod schedule and has incorporated personalized learning time #HackLearning
A1.2 Student voice & choice, yes—AND we need to choose what’s important to them, as opposed to what’s easy, comfortable, fun, or of fleeting interest. #HackLearning
A1 Ss need & deserve to know the “why” behind assignments. How will the learning experience prepare Ss to be successful in life? Passing a state exam is not a good answer. #HackLearning
I am looking forward to watching this process unfold. I’m intrigued by what I have read so far. Are you at one of the schools that is participating? #HackLearning
A1: Choices! Students have different life experiences, interests, strengths, you name it... flexible courses and curriculum can serve more students fully #HackLearning
Starts with mutual respect, co-constructing meaning. Teacher is a part of the community, not separate. That's the first thing that comes to mind! #hacklearning
A1 On Friday I the same science lesson twice2 fifth graders. First lesson no connection, second time connected to school ‘s outdoor learning center. Guess which one better more engaged learning? #hacklearning
A1: currently working on student choice for assessment in the current unit! Trying to get them to know their choice and what will work best and is equal for all students! #HackLearning
#HackLearning A1 Begin with making the school environment a place YOU want to be. Your vibe attracts your tribe ... creating a "place" begins with creating a culture.
A1. It all begins with making the school feel like a place they want to be. If they’re not comfortable expresssing their ideas and taking ownership of their learning, personalization will never live to its fullest potential. #hacklearning
A2 Research has shown that classroom design can impact learning by as much as 25% positive or negative (furniture, layout, temperature, colors, acoutsitcs) #HackLearning#LT8keys
A2: We started staff-led/staff-chosen PLCs & #edcamp-style PDs where staff present & Ts have choices to attend. Again, it’s all about encouraging staff (or students!) to lead, make choices that work for their style/wants/needs, & understanding every1 is different! #HackLearning
A2: Changing it up. The front of the room isn't always the same (then the same desks/students are always in the back). Decentralizing the "power" of the room. #HackLearning
A2: never have students in rows. I always encourage effective collaboration. I let the students pick where they want to sit and their flexible seating option. I give the students choices on how to assess their learning. #hacklearning
A2: When designing our learning spaces, we must work with what we have, consider the Ss we teach, and the culture we wish to create, when this is done, learning spaces meet everyone needs! #HackLearning
#HackLearning A1 Begin with making the school environment a place YOU want to be. Your vibe attracts your tribe ... creating a "place" begins with creating a culture.

A2: As a sped teacher, I’ve gone more hands-on. Learning garden, jobs that incorporate money skills, practicing live interview skills with community volunteers, etc #HackLearning
A2. In my job, I have seen flexible seating arrangements for students which accommodates different learning needs. When a teacher does this coupled with personalize learning (DI) the outcomes can be powerful. #hacklearning
A1: Teaching Ss to ask their own questions utilizing the Question Formulation Technique teaches a critical lifelong skill while actively engaging Ss in learning process #HackLearning
A2 Imclass, daily work is practice ... assessment days are for monitoring progress & grades ... no practice means loss, daily practice done well earns a win.... #HackLearning
A1 In teaching LA right now, I'm having a different S run the class each day. I give a mini-lesson & after that Ss work independently on activity choices for an hour, giving me more time to confer with Ss. They're liking the freedom #HackLearning
A2: Classroom spaces are always a hard topic for me, because I taught in 4-5 classrooms every year, often the cafeteria or stage - couldn't do anything too permanent or hard to set up/tear down or that required storage. #hacklearning
My school is piloting 4 alternative rooms now with plans to move more towards alternative seating. I'm interested/excited to see how it plays out! In my own room, space is the constraint #hacklearning
A2: Students are seated in groups, rather than individually... PBL... STEAM-based activities... critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration encouraged each day. #HackLearning
A2 In our classroom we have different areas to work depending on student needs, they tend to spread out from carpet to different seating spaces #hacklearning
A2: we use learnings pods for read alouds paired with snack. Also for science experiencs. And for my principal lunch book clubs with kids. And pull out interventions. They are some of our most active spaces. #HackLearning
A2: As @E_Sheninger and I share in Learning Transformed, learning space resdesign is NOT about being pretty for Pinterest. It’s about brain research and its impact on student learning. #LT8Keys#HackLearning
No, at the moment, we're experimenting in our 11th & 12th grade Science classes. But other Ts are seeing how positive it is and want to get on board #HackLearning
A1.2 Student voice & choice, yes—AND we need to teach them to choose what’s important to them, as opposed to what’s easy, comfortable, fun, or of fleeting interest. #HackLearning
A2) Shifting adult and student mindsets that learning happens and is applicable everywhere not just in isolated instructional math and reading classrooms. Learning is integrated not isolated. #HackLearning
Same for me as an itinerant teacher my first 5 years - teachers need to realize that their space is the STUDENTS' space first, not ours. Make the space inviting for other teachers, as well. #PetPeeve#hacklearning
A2: A favorite that I've seen - for their first #PBL project of the year, 4th grade Ss put all of the furniture in the middle of the room & had to design their learning space & guidelines for each area. #hacklearning
A2 - At a newly built school in our area, they have a more open concept, esp. in the younger grades.Pod- ability to open and separate individual classrooms. Allows for more collaborative learning/teaching.
#hacklearning
A1b: Who is doing the talking in your classroom? Students or teacher? That will tell you something about how personal & authentic the learning is. #hacklearning
Joining #hacklearning program already in progress, I'm Brian & I teach MS students ELA in CO. A2 Digital space I've changed in effort to support learning = online grade book. https://t.co/gX6wuHd7KR
A2 As @thomascmurray and I state, “We need to move away from classroom design that is “Pinterest pretty” and use research/design thinking to guide the work.” #HackLearning#LT8keys
A2: Flexible seating that is actually moving as learning targets shift. Ts in my school are not afraid to think outside of the box. Tables with legs modified, paint buckets with cushions, milk crate seating, chairs & tables on wheels for differing teams!! #HackLearning
A2: Ss help design the classroom space. And it’s not just one layout throughout the year. Showing Ss work & displays that are meaningful & can be used to build/support learning, not just prettify the room. #HackLearning
A2: The vast amount of research on Learning Space redesign, all of which we share in Learning Transformed, is NOT about spending money. It’s about mindset, awareness, and understanding student agency. #LT8keys#hacklearning
First step: have teachers remove their desks from the classroom. Second step: instruct teachers to keep learning nonlinear, public and shared. Third step: promote an anytime anywhere attitude about learning.
Studentsare engaged in hands on conceptual learning constructing their own understanding Ss are scientists and engineers in their learning #hacklearning
The space is designed to match my flexible teaching style. It’s clutter free, comfortable, and fun #hacklearning Ss like the whiteboard tables the most!
In a new job this year, not in the classroom - so yes. We did what we could - the one plus is that we didn't get stuck in a rut in terms of setup! #hacklearning
A2: A favorite that I've seen - for their first #PBL project of the year, 4th grade Ss put all of the furniture in the middle of the room & had to design their learning space & guidelines for each area. #hacklearning
#HackLearning A2 Just DESIGN ... eliminate "redesign" as if we are giving a nod to what had been unsuccessfully done and redone time and time again. All stakeholders are to be involved. Our classrooms should reflect the environments they will be entering when they leave us ...
A2: In the classroom I used flexible seating and a “Starbucks” feel to make the learning environmentappealing to my students. Loved the “hominess!” #HackLearning
A2 But if classroom design *were* up to me? Modular furniture for flexible room configurations, couches, window seats, bouncy bands, exercise balls, standing desks, alcoves, books, toys, nap pods, outdoor classrooms, and lots of snacks.
#HackLearning
First step: have teachers remove their desks from the classroom. Second step: instruct teachers to keep learning nonlinear, public and shared. Third step: promote an anytime anywhere attitude about learning.
A2: The success of this conceptual necessity in schools today is dependent upon budgets aligning with district visions. It cannot fall upon the T alone to afford the seating and furniture. Beyond creating spaces, the convo should be, how do budgets support them? #HackLearning
I love this answer b/c I was forgetting all about digital space. My goal for semester 2 is to incorporate digital progress portfolios for student reflection, something that they can personalize and upload videos/pics #HackLearning
A2: “Flexible seating” is about student agency and choice, not about buying 25 new colorful chairs with wheels - all of which are identical. #hacklearning
100% agree ... in fact, I changed my pedagogy and am now looking to add flexible seating ... less whole group instruction and more personalized learning is also a goal #HackLearning
A2 Although HS teachers can be resistant to flexible seating, @staples_heather at my school does a nice job of bringing in unique and creative areas for students. Since she teaches the Tomorrow’s Teachers in addiction to ELA, this is even more imp. #HackLearning
A2 I wanted a cozier room so I asked Ss to redesign it. This is what they came up with & they're so proud of the results. It's truly "their" room now #HackLearning
#HackLearning A3: we have to thing in terms of skills over content. What skills are we teaching both soft and cognitive to prepare kids for their future.
LeffingwellDan: RT E_Sheninger: A1 Students need to know “WHY” they are learning what they are and “HOW” they will use it outside of school #HackLearning
#HackLearning A1 Just DESIGN ... eliminate "redesign" as if we are giving a nod to what has been unsuccessfully done and redone time and time again. All stakeholders are to be involved. Our classrooms should reflect the environments they will be entering when they leave us ...
A3 Blended instruction is what the teacher does with tech. Blended learning is where students use tech to have control over path, place, and pace. #HackLearning
Agreed! And, how well do communities understand, support, and value these visions? If they don't, why not, where can we grow that dialogue? #HackLearning
I stand outside my room while Ss are coming in & tell them how the room should look for today's lesson because it depends on what the goal is. #HackLearning
A3 I unpack standards with students then ask them to reflect on their learning as I design practice ... I need more shifting still but willing to learn as I watch my sts learn/work #HackLearning
What a great idea!! I’d love to do something similar with my HS students, but not sure how to make it work with 80+ students over 3 class blocks... #HackLearning
A3 We can embed opportunities for students to notice what matters to them (not only what’s comfortable, easy, or fun) and help them choose to do what matters in their learning, their work, their relationships, and their self-care.
#HackLearning
A3: One thing I always think is that we have to get away from teaching the same thing in the same way every year. Each group of kids is different! Are we open to changing our style to reflect their desires, needs, wants, & interests? #HackLearning
A3- At some point we must think of learners by readiness and not just by age or grade. Ss should not be pushed forward or held back from learning opportunities based solely on a number, age or grade.#HackLearning
I wish all teachers had time assigned in their schedule each day for professional reading & learning ... so important & #HackLearning series is such a valuable resource

A3: We need to teach for today’slandscape. So many schools are still teaching the same way as if it were 1954. What skills are needed now to be successful? Are we arming good digital citizens? Are kids prepared with tech? Are we creating innovators mindsets? #HackLearning
A3: Our staff is implementing a Culture if Thinking where "deep learning opportunities" are our goal with each lesson. Shifting from good teaching to great occurs when Ts are relentless about maximizing understanding, engagement, collaboration and growth. #HackLearning
A3: We must re-think the role of teachers, they must be flexible, trained, supported and encouraged to grow their edu-repertoire with 21st C skills! #HackLearning
So sorry I'm late! I'm Stephanie, a literacy teacher educator from NY. I need to get better at adding alerts to my calendar so I do not miss this chat! #hacklearning
Course #gamification is one amazing option. Offer a main narrative with TONS of side quests. Give students muliple avenues for entry into your course content. #xplap#HackLearning
Many of the pictures shared might seem out of reach for budget reasons. But teachers can think about changing their learning environment without big bucks. #HackLearning
A3: I want flexible seating but I’m very limited by the lab stations! But very interested in how to change for everyday learning and what would be best for students #HackLearning

I did this with 55 Ss. I asked who'd like to work on redesigning our room & a handful got on board. They worked together & presented their idea to the others. Everyone liked it & voila! #HackLearning
Yes! When talking with @jessxbo at @EdcampUSA I realized how true that is ... her classroom empowers kids to love math because her pedagogy shifted with her seating! Awesome! #HackLearning

A3: I am looking at incorporating restorative justice in our school. Behavior and inconsistent/ineffective consequences are a significant block to teaching and learning. #HackLearning
Agreed. My students opened my eyes to some possibilities I hadn’t even thought of. Their ideas are usually better than mine 🙂Best part of piloting our new space. #HackLearning
A3: Does the learning space match the desired pedagogy? Why or why not? If we are going to make learning personal and authentic, desks in rows and students as islands for much of their day will inhibit growth of the life skills needed. #hacklearning
A3.I think personalized learning or blended learning can be powerful. Leaders & Ts must posses a strong knowledge of standards 2 ensure that students are showing content mastery. Ss learn differently & should be afforded the opportunity to maximize their learning. #HackLearning
I teach a 1 semester elective course on Modern US History. Ss choose at the beginning of the semester what they want to focus on. I rearrange the course units accordingly. It's their course. #HackLearning

A2: Ditch that podium! And ditch sitting behind the almighty monolith of a teacher desk. Fewer physical barriers promotes closer authentic community. Ditto for death by PowerPoint. #HackLearning
The Contrarians are ultimately rewarded but we are looking at magazines to dress like others, watching influencers for the latest trends to try and worried about what others think of us. #HackLearning
A2: It is not always, but I believe in the power of collobartivr learning. I teach my Ss how to work together in their groups as a team. I’ve also flipped my instruction. #HackLearning
A3: Anyone using a great digital portfolio model to achieve this that they would be willing to share? We are designing one using Google Sites. Any great insights? #hacklearning
Thanks for stirring my thinking w/this piece, Lauren, re: teasing apart power of portfolio from power of grades. Excellent frames & sentences starters here. #hacklearning
I always struggle with this - feel like teacher prep programs are often lagging behind what's happening in the "real world". I'm not sure what the solution is! #HackLearning
A3 - teachers must be faciltators - if the teacher is doing more of the talking than the students on a daily basis, they need to rethink their teaching. #HackLearning
Can I get an AMEN! Want to get me started? Use the phrase 'digital native' in a sentence. I hate that phrase when people don't really understand it. #HackLearning
Definitely for individual rooms, good point. If all students benefit from classroom redesign, it eventually has to become part of the community conversation/value to do at a larger scale. #HackLearning
