The #educoach hashtag is used by instructional coaches around the world. We chat each Wednesday at 8pm CST on Twitter and use the hashtag throughout the week to share resources, ask questions and collaborate with instructional coaches.
#EduCoach 👋🏼Serve as an Instructional Coach at Bartlett MS in Porterville, CA! 📘Enjoying our Winter Book Study on #TheCoachingHabit authored by @boxofcrayons 📒🖍
My #eduwin -- coaching conversations set up in response to the Coaching menu form I shared with Ts. Some great reflection and planning with Coaching Habit questions. #educoach
Instructional coach in Vermont. Success for the week was giving a presentation to our district leadership team on @jimknight99 intensive institute with colleagues... with a live #betterconversation#EduCoach
Let’s get started with tonight’s topic: Chapter 6 of The Coaching Habit - The Strategic Question (Our questions are framed with an instructional coach in mind, but feel free to insert your own role to respond to the question.) #educoach
Welcome to the chat, Kristy! #educoach has been talking about "The Coaching Habit" book: starting conversations with "What are you thinking? What ELSE are you thinking?" Then LISTENING.
A1: Yes -- I've used the listening more than talking stance. One of my T's actually started a conversation herself with "Here's what I'm thinking"! #educoach@EDMathHysteria
#EduCoach A1: This week I have focused on wholly being present in my conversations & focused on what is really on the minds of the Ts I serve. Instead of 👇🏼 after asking a question & going through the motions or thinking about other things ... I am genuinely listening.
I had a colleague yesterday complain that they wish I shared my opinion more readily. Maybe this was my win for the week. I’m breaking my bad habit of doing too much of the thinking? #educoach
#EduCoach#TheCoachingHabit has to be one of my all time favorite book studies because the chapters are short and straight to the point and @boxofcrayons provides some additional and interesting videos that accompany each part. 👍🏼

Hi everyone! My name is Arianna Johnson. I am a student at North Carolina State University, and this will be my first official chat! I am looking forward to it! #educoach#eci201
A2. I sometimes think I "go through the motions" because I think I know how I can help w/o completely listening to what they have to say, what they need, and how I can actually help Ts help themselves. #educoach
Oops! Late to party! Laura IC from IL & my #eduwin was partnering with a teacher to plan PD to make the most out of the co-teaching partnerships we already have. #educoach
A1: No, I haven't really tried out the coach habit questions. I currently work at the Boys and Girls Club, so I hope to practice these questions more often. #educoach#eci201
#EduCoach A2: The key to actually listening is to Coach with curiosity and to stay curious and keep asking questions. ❓🌬❓
"To be on a quest is nothing more than to become an asker of questions." -Sam Keen
A2: Just directed play of "On Golden Pond". Norman comments on the art of listening and how people check themselves out in your glasses while waiting for their turn to talk. I kept thinking about #educoach!
#EduCoach Welcome Arianna and congratulations to joining your first official chat! Great #PLN and amazing Educators! Glad you are with us this evening!
A2: if you’re actually listening, you are curious. Wondering what they will say... rather than thinking about how to lob the ball back at them. #EduCoach
A2: For me, when it is easy to tell when someone is actually listening. If you are actually listening you are fully engaged and interested in the conversation itself. You have to urge to want to know more! #educoach#eci201
#EduCoach A2: Totally agree! We need to tune out the distractions going on in our head that might pull us away from truly listening & focus on truly connecting heart to heart and thought to thought with Ts we serve. 🐹
"The wheel is spinning but the hamster is dead."
A3: I’m a note taker. It helps me organize ideas and see the need for future questioning w/o interrupting the Ts flow of thought. It’s in my notes, so I can return to it. #educoach
A3: This. Slowing things down. Holding myself back. I’m working so hard to get better at this. It helps to remember that respecting the status of my colleagues means that I let them do their own thinking. #educoach
#EduCoach#GrowthMindset Indeed! 💫Total believer in encouraging all of us to find inspiration from the success of others. If our Ts succeed ultimately our Ss will succeed! #BetterTogether
@EDMathHysteria -- yes! Letting our colleagues do their own thinking. Just having a sit-down conversation helps to slow things down in their day to allow them to start reflection and thinking! #educoach
A3: I am one to picture what the speaker is saying, while also trying to take notes. I am able to stay focused and I get to write down any clarification questions I may have for later. #educoach#eci201
I’m a note taker too but a terrible typist. I’ve decided that I need to pause note taking to actually listen. Then check for my own understanding with the briefest of notes. #educoach
Q4 What are your thoughts on the Tim Ferriss quote in chapter 6 of The Coaching Habit, “Being busy is a form of laziness-lazy thinking and indiscriminate action.” #educoach
A4: Unfortunately I have often been guilty of "being busy". Head in the computer does not equal growth of myself, T's or S's. @SweeneyDiane cautioned IC's about this at our first training. #educoach
#EduCoach A3: A tip to help stay in an active listening mode is to identify what is the ❓that is truly at the heart of the matter or what kinds of questions might help us move forward. #TheCoachingHabit
❓❤️❓
"... discover the question at the
heart of every good strategy."
A4: I think he’s asking us to reframe our thinking about busy vs. lazy. Most of us become coaches because we define ourselves as “doers” but in coaching it’s really about reflecting WHO is doing... if I’m the prime “doer” I’m not coaching well. #educoach
A4: Rings so true. I’m passionate and can get excited about a lot of amazing work we can do, but if I take on too much, the work is mediocre, lacks reflection and doesn’t have the impact I hoped for. Have to guard against this! #educoach
Agree! I'm a fixer -- I want to fix the T's problem. But I'm starting to see I do NOT need to be the prime "doer" as you describe it. The T seeks growth -- can't happen if I'm the "doer". #educoach

Q5 Have you tried using The Strategic Question? “If you are saying yes to this, what are you saying no to.” What are your experiences or thoughts to using the question? #educoach
Q4: I think he is "being busy" is a result of us being "lazy." If we put our all into what we say we are passionate about, then things will be great! We cannot grow and do the great things we set out for if the work is not put in. #educoach#eci201
A5: A grade level team in our building asked for staff to commit to making contact with specific S's each day to encourage S. Good time to think "what are you really asking me to do?" #educoach
I have not, but I love this Q! Ts are the hardest working people I know. We can’t do everything. Let’s spend our time doing what will have the greatest impact and forgo the time wasters (like grading everything!) #educoach
#EduCoach A5: This has really forced me to think about how being an impactful #InstructionalCoach is not just about adding but what can we subtract, stop doing, & take off our plate to more effectively support

Good point! What can we stop doing in order to be more effective? Next question -- how to let admin know that having several mtgs during school day takes away from our work? #educoach

A6: Full disclosure? Not my best thing. I get excited & create more work than I can do. I need (& have had) a coach help me prioritize occasionally. ‘Bout time to do that again 😬#educoach
#EduCoach A5: So profound! From here on out I'm going to use this question as my North Star! 💫
"What will you say No to if you're truly saying Yes to this?"
A5: yes just today... it was not a win. I said yes to revising proficiency scales knowing that I should really be doing something with greater impact. I have a soft spot for curriculum work... #educoach

#EduCoach Oh my I just had the same thing happen yesterday with several things I ended up saying Yes to. I have been told many a times that everyone knows I will always say Yes and even though "No" is in my name "Noemi" LOL I have a hard time saying it. #EduCoach
Welcome to #educoach! We are discussing Chapter 6 of "The Coaching Habit" and are on a question about "what will you say No to if you say Yes to something" that you are asked to do?
#EduCoach A5: Going to focus on saying Yes more slowly & willing to stay curious before committing.
🎈What could being fully committed to this idea look like?
🎈How do you create the space, focus, & resources that you'll need to truly do that Yes? From👇🏼
#TheCoachingHabit
A6 In our building admin has as many meetings as we do. Working together to increase e-mail use and limit mtgs that can be typed out instead. #educoach
Q7 5 other strategic questions were introduced on page 173. Thoughts on how you might use in your own work?
What is your winning aspiration?
Where will we play?
How will we win?
What capabilities must be in place?
What management systems are required?

#EduCoach Welcome Alisha to your first chat! It's an awesome winter book study on #TheCoachingHabit but the questions are open whether you've had an opportunity to read the chapter or not. Great #PLN
Think the Principal-Coach agreement is a great tool and strategy. Also sharing what it is you role is, in the beginning, might help to reduce requests that my to necessarily be the best use of time. #educoach
