A1 New Ts need time. They need someone they can text at midnight.
A2: NTs need training in classroom management or behavior plans so they can focus on instruction when the year starts

A2 If a school has a long standing approach/curriculum - NTs need time to learn that. Coaches are so important in this process.
A2: I've been having success with co-teaching with my newbies. They teach me/I teach them: kids win and we grow our collegiality
A2: New T trainings should include the major tech tools in district-- SIS, communication tools, etc.
Yes. Meeting in grade level teams on an ongoing basis will help NTs with curriculum. Then need time & support.
Q2 New teachers need PD in real time: setting up classes, expectations, management, p/t conferences, not too much too fast
Come visit anytime Laura!!
A2 continued: NTs should also get training in instructional methods and curriculum
New Ts need support with self-selecting a goal. Choose one area and develop it based on indv. need.
My mentor T was a saint..I asked so many Qs. I was lucky--mentor T listened, smiled. I felt safe/open to ask Qs
AMEN TO THIS! Right on! I always try to help my Ts out and answer texts/calls when I can https://t.co/iVItTrhuuI
And the perspective that they need to take time for self-care when they call :) https://t.co/s3D96wEnvA

A2: New Ts need help with district & building iniatives. Plus the meaning behind district alphabet lingo, FAST, RTI, etc
A2 any and all consistent, ongoing, on demand support
Come see us anytime Laura!!
A2 We also need to be mindful to not dump "too much" on NTs. Go slow to go fast. Don't overwhelm.
A2: new teacher trainings different than veterans. Have therapy sessions where they can ask anything with coaches/mentors,unafraid
Exactly the support I wish I'd had as new T! Plan to make myself available/visible next yr https://t.co/sQE4ecm8BC

A2: should have lots of questions with support that is ready to answer quickly with balance of direct answers and reflective ?s
Always feel a bit like Mom/Counselor/Friend to new teachers
I couldn't agree with you more!
NTs need model lessons. I try and share out when a T is doing a in class & encourage Ts who are "off" 2 come stop by.
A2: New teachers need to learn how to manage a classroom, how to deal with parents, and how to navigate the curriculum.
A1 how to plan & develop solid, tier 1 instruction
A2: New Ts need so much, but can only do so much. Focus on expectations, routines, and relationships. The rest will come.
Hello Anabel from NC. A2: Having the chance to observe master teachers was really valuable to me early on.
. Then you owe it to some new teacher to be a saint yourself!
A2+1 Lesson planning assistance too! Where to start, when to start....so much easier with support
We had a teacher spotlight this year for a month or two. We encouraged new Ts and veteran Ts to stop by classrooms and observe.
A3: NTs should have additional mentorship, including modeling from experienced Ts and extra PD time
I think new Ts also need respect from other Ts and acknowledged for what they do know and do well. Everyone has something to offer
. That;s the kind of agreement even I can get behind!
A3: I think it is impt to remember the emotional ups and downs of a first yr teacher and address that.
A3: Would add support them to connect via Soc Media. Giving insights on how connecting can enhance their work w/students.
& we LOVE that!! Sometimes we just need to be taken care of when things get a bit crazy!
A3 how 2 handle stress! We brought in our director of nurses & we provided some tips on managing stress. They loved it!
A2 NTs need job-imbedded PD with timely feedback and lots and lots of celebration for areas of strength.
A3 Every NT is Iowa has a mentor for 2 years. Great support!
Need some clarification: NTs in general to the profession or NTs in our school? Or both... Haha!
Not just PD but time to collaborate with vet Ts . . . invaluable!
A3: additional start of the year days to see solid modeling of strategies and reflective practices. Also, time for ind. inquiry
A3: New Ts need support increasing collaborative skills and prioritizing all their new responsibilities
It actually started from the admin. We shared 1-2 teachers a month in faculty meeting.
It's been fun & we're all lrning lots! Will help us better support others Had random Ts start showing up to observe :)
Good point. I'd say either. Both new to profession and new to school need support.
. Bring your new teachers immediately into . Show 'em how to combat professional loneliness w/social media.
This is an amazing opportunity! https://t.co/G00PIoNsZi
A3 Every NT is Iowa has a mentor for 2 years. Great support!
then we had the Ts email the highlight Teacher and plan a time they could come observe. very simple.
NT need the nuts and bolts of the district to survive the day2day, then deeper ED practices 1st year.
I pay it fwd every day. You never forget that kindness-meant so much & helped me positively impact kids faster!
Good pt! Had new T thank vet T for sharing the amt of crying that happened yr1... she thought she was only one :(
So true. New Teachers need this support. https://t.co/LCWaTe4Qec
Not just PD but time to collaborate with vet Ts . . . invaluable!
A3 NTs need support in being reflective. Many know the science of teaching from undergrad. Now need the art.
. Take every opportunity to put new teachers in front of truly capable veterans.
a solid mentor teacher and a good relationship with their Instructional Coach is a great start!
I could see maybe Google appointment spots in the future, but that might be too much for some Ts.
A3 NTs need mindfulness. Permission to practice self-care is crucial.
Dang it! Missed question 3! Need to focus, Natalie! Haha!
Prioritizing = so huge! Excellent point
new teachers should be invited to coach vets
. Invite 'em to watch a great teacher engage a class, write a lesson plan, coach a kid, deal with parents.
And put them in touch with those positive in the profession...surround them.
Don't even get me started on the technology side of teaching - YIKES! When do we get time to learn that!
. You and your colleagues should conspire to illustrate every sort of teacherly success. THAT'S it!
important to give NT's time with other NT's to share these as well!
So true New teachers need to be valued like this - coaching vets. https://t.co/Fi0Mk4CD7U
new teachers should be invited to coach vets
A3. I think that experienced teachers should lend a supporting ear to new teachers.
Q3: What additional supports should we provide for new teachers?
new teachers should observe their mentor being coached by instructional coach
A3 time with other NT's to share glows, grows and whoops woes!
Coaching cycle.... make that a point to implement. Don't leave them hanging... etc. Feedback is very important!
Yes - this would model the reflective process of teaching! https://t.co/LkCWaJQtmD
new teachers should observe their mentor being coached by instructional coach
"Teacherly success." My fave line!!!@quickmuse BRILLIANT IDEA
WOW! YESSS! That would be awesome!
Q4: If you plan/lead regular meetings/trainings throughout year, how will you plan to deliver that ongoing pd for new teachers?
Love on job training for tech! Best lrning 4 Ts=me standing next to during lesson to answer Qs while they tch w/tech
A3 Would love to see a forum for Ts new & old to share stories about what's happening in the classroom. Moth-like storytelling.
If list of needs is an indication-we may be overburdening our new Ts. NT->choose focus from support given https://t.co/i59QzpsLii
Prioritizing = so huge! Excellent point
modeling continuous improvement early with our new teachers is the best "gift" we can give them
A4: PD should focus on things Ts can implement immediately and allow opportunities to reflect on their implementation.
A3: Our bldg principal keeps supply of chocolate for staff -- point NT to the chocolate!
AMazing chat 2night, everyone! So exhausted, but Looking forward to reading the rest of the chat in the am during am coffee time!
A4: Fortunate that my district sees the needs of nt so will get an hour a week with each one for pd they desire.
A3 New Ts should be encourage to blog it out! Writing as professional reflection. Blogging as edu community building.
A4 Idea - hold PD in a different classroom each time. Serves as a way for all Ts to see rooms, ask ? about what they see.
Great idea! I used to do this as a Principal. It was a great strategy! https://t.co/0N5oNluPBi
A4 Idea - hold PD in a different classroom each time. Serves as a way for all Ts to see rooms, ask ? about what they see.
A3 Give the opportunity for new Ts to envision the T they might become in 5 or 10 years. What superpowers would that person have?
Ouch, a little too much of me out there. Not sure I'd be comfortable with that. And finding the time . . .
A4: important to consider prior knowledge of vet staff vs new staff. Differentiate for readiness when possible.
I like this! Our kdgn PLC used this idea for their mtgs this year.
A3 Have teachers draw up an imaginary retirement announcement for themselves. Create a future vision for their professional lives.
A4: regular meetings for new Ts s/b along side trusted advisor/mentor T for translation, clarity, and understanding of mtg focus
A4: Started online 'Math/Tech Minute' mini-PDs based on T requests. Ts can log in to live GHangout on Air or watch at convenience
I like this. What will their legacy be. :) https://t.co/BUywJtsy0O
A3 Have teachers draw up an imaginary retirement announcement for themselves. Create a future vision for their professional lives.
What an awesome coaching piece! https://t.co/bw7w6uRgU4
A4: Started online 'Math/Tech Minute' mini-PDs based on T requests. Ts can log in to live GHangout on Air or watch at convenience
. I dig. Shouldn't force it on anyone--but many people are surprised, once they start blogging, at how rewarding it is.
A4: Veteran Ts or Admin should begin meetings modeling ideas from previous PD, lead a discussion...refresh the learning.
A4 Planning to give them options including face-to-face, blended, Twitter, Periscope... https://t.co/0nCyQWnB7O
Q4: If you plan/lead regular meetings/trainings throughout year, how will you plan to deliver that ongoing pd for new teachers?
Yes! So true. :) https://t.co/im3xU9XxHh
. I dig. Shouldn't force it on anyone--but many people are surprised, once they start blogging, at how rewarding it is.
The Multigenerational Workplace: Communicate, Collaborate, and Create Community - Good book 4 schools by
A4. Set up regular weekly meetings. Talk over ideas/observations...give a challenge to try/look for thru wk.
A4: NTs have no idea what they don't know. It's bliss. Practice PD with care and in short chunks that are timely and meaningful.
Q5: Who will visit in new teachers’ classrooms and what supports/feedback will be helpful to give?
great self-care decision :)
. We get so wrapped up in the day-to-day that it's easy to lose sight of long-term professional goals. Makes 'em real.
I really wish I had more time for blogging with this intention. Someday.
. You're blogging right this very moment. Microblogging!
How will admin decide WHERE new Ts classrooms will be? Surround them with positive role models! https://t.co/mydF1Amr62
Q5: Who will visit in new teachers’ classrooms and what supports/feedback will be helpful to give?
I have a Wordpress, and I have blogged, other tasks have taken over of late.
A5: Experienced Ts and administrators. It would be helpful to hear what is going well and concrete suggestions for improvement.
. Understood. You need to feel compelled to write. We all do.
I don't do this often, but when I am running on empty... I listen :)
Thanks for the invite. :)
I did the October blog challenge, and not much since-been keeping notes on ideas, though!
I am compelled to write, but not with so many irons in the fire as I seem to have this term.
NTs need someone non-evaluative to visit and provide feedback. Like- how do I manage pencil sharpening.
Q6: How can new teachers be empowered to contribute to the culture of the school?
I promise I will as soon as I get everything else done. June should be possible.
A5: other new teachers. It's helpful to reflect with someone on a similar journey. Any teacher-leader that asks good questions
A5 Focus on 1 thing...document progress and give systematic feedback. Then, move to next goal. https://t.co/gFxihvzkVN
Q5: Who will visit in new teachers’ classrooms and what supports/feedback will be helpful to give?
I understand completely. No pressure. Blog when you can. Read other posts. :)
mentor's job is to get new teacher involved in peer coaching relationships with colleagues
*yawn* starting to doze. Time to for bed! Sneaking out of early. Thanks, friends!
A6: New T's should be made to feel that what they say/share matters. Up to Admin, to support this culture. Can be hard at times.
A5 Mentors, vets, other newbies, admin. visit. Give specific positives & suggestions. video is powerful and doesn't lie.
I'm not inclined to complain about being busy, but blogging really does feel like an impossible luxury during a term.
Good night. :) Let's connected. I'd love to hear about today's visit.
A3: clear ! Take attendance, grade assignments on-time and regularly, interact, empower
A5 Would like to use tools for collaborative reflection & documentation next year.
A6: NTs should be encouraged to contribute at staff meetings and on school committees
Q4 I think that weekly meeting and regular communication through social media is helpful for ongoing pd for new teachers.
Agreed! https://t.co/mGb7Lj2BAB
A4: NTs have no idea what they don't know. It's bliss. Practice PD with care and in short chunks that are timely and meaningful.
A6: this is really important. I make sure to invite them to all spirit activities - dodge ball, lip sync, games...include them!
new teachers should be members of teams. Teams allow NT to be contributors
A6 ALLOW new teachers to contribute. Old teachers: share power. Step back. Trust. Give the youngsters an actual chance.
A4. I think that weekly meeting and regular communication through social media is helpful for ongoing pd for new teachers.
A5: feedback dependent on T-this year NT was exemplar for routines with solid transitions/student performance. Rigor is next goal
A6 Make it easy for them to know what opportunities are avail. Attend with mentor or team member.
A6 Blog posts, Twitter chats, PD allows new Ts to ease into finding their professional voices https://t.co/dAKmiCt9k6
Q6: How can new teachers be empowered to contribute to the culture of the school?
Yes - PD on a variety of platforms is good.
A6: Encourage new T by sharing their successes with staff. Ask new T to share good news, or "wins"
We need to be willing to put ourselves out there. Welcoming environment helps. I've had that exp. this yr!
Q7: What are questions do you have about supporting new teachers?
A6: Put new Ts on a TEAM of teachers that meet regularly, discuss Ss, learning, school climate/culture. Talk/share...
A6 Encourage new and veteran teachers to do Q&A sessions before faculty about classroom issues. Those who don't mind speaking up!
What resources have you found helpful for new teachers?
A6: contribution may be from courses or other schools they visited- experienced Ts appreciate accounts of other class models
A5 Experienced teachers should visit new teachers' classrooms and let them know if it needs to be rearranged or redecorated.
A7 we lose 50% of NTs in the first five yrs. How can we reduce this?
A7 when NTs take advice but do not actually implement, who steps in. Coach? Mentor? Admin?
A7: A good pair of ears and Kleenex.
A couple that are easy for New T's to use are Pinterest & YouTube. Set up boards & playlists that they can follow.
. Have your and your colleagues conspire to make the job so supportive, so rewarding, that it would be nuts to leave.
Another good question. https://t.co/XPf6WmfaNl
A7 when NTs take advice but do not actually implement, who steps in. Coach? Mentor? Admin?
Q8: What are some take-aways for you from tonight’s chat?
It takes the whole damned teachers' lounge to train a teacher. Work TOGETHER.
When teaching resumes its focus on teaching & learning and not data, evals, testing, etc.
A7 How can we better prepare pre-service teachers to reduce NT stress?
This year we have new teacher institutes once each quarter -- half day session w/instruc partners
A6 New teachers can be empowered by having their suggestions heard and considered. New ts need to feel like they have a voice.
Coach or mentor, lack of implementation indicates need for support https://t.co/EDBQza2TDh
A7 when NTs take advice but do not actually implement, who steps in. Coach? Mentor? Admin?
I will have at least 8 nt next fall. I need to come up with a solid plan to support them all.
A8 Tread PD as a team sport. Surround new teachers with mentors. One, two, 10. As many mentors as you have/need.
A7: The sessions deep dive into topic like collab. --build a set of teacher materials along the year
New T's need better options at Unis as Pre-Service T's. Support and effective strategies seem to be missing.
and how to help them see whose advice they HAVE to follow and whose is optional. NTs need to find their own way.
Self care is extremely important for educators. Take time for yourself!
Include some time to talk/focus on T wellness, personal/family ground rules for work!
More ed on SpEd, differentiation, behave mngmt. We are seeing more and more students with unidentified needs.
A8 Make retain those great new teachers a faculty team goal! When one leaves, you all lose.
Lost not for lack of knowlge but management/organization/early burn out...don't dump too on them. Support https://t.co/OphimsrGjS
Been working to do my part as founder of . 6 years running here on twitter in May!
A8: what we think NTs need may be too much-give with counsel to prioritize to focus on student learning and success
could indicate conflicting advice...
Thank you 4 your insight tonight on how coaches can support new teachers. A special thanks to & for joining
A8 Make NT PD meaningful. Support the teaching and the person inside.
My take away - vast amount of knowledge out there! NTs need to tap into it.
