Welcome to #MOedchat! Tonight we're talking #edcamp and other types of non-traditional PD.
Introduce yourself, and share an awesome professional learning event you participated in recently!
Good evening! Scott from beautiful Southern Illinois here. Joining my neighbors to the west tonight to gain knowledge of non-traditional PD...an area I feel could used improvement in our area. #MOedchat
Q1: If you’ve attended an #EdCamp, what do you feel is the best part of the EdCamp model?
If you’re unfamiliar, what questions do you have about the EdCamp model? #MOedchat#EdCampSTL
A1 Best part of #edcamp model is that it's participant-driven! You can be selfish with you learning and use the 'rule of 2 feet' to walk out of a session if it isn't meeting your needs. #moedchat#WhyIEdcamp
A1: Best part is the theory of “if you get nothing out of it, you aren’t trying” - You can create a topic, lead a discussion, and/or participate in sessions. #moedchat
A1: ONE of my fav things about #edcampstl is that the democracy of filling out sessions reminds me of the 1st semester of college - you often don't know who is "cool," so people come together that might not otherwise #moedchat
A1: I love Edcamps because I can always find a topic that is important to me. If I don't see what I want on the session board I can always add a topic and just like magic, amazing educators will also want to discuss that topic. #moedchat#EdcampSTL
Q1: If you’ve attended an #EdCamp, what do you feel is the best part of the EdCamp model?
If you’re unfamiliar, what questions do you have about the EdCamp model? #MOedchat#EdCampSTL
@SDOWPD1. @WMSSDOW@SDofWashington - Calling all SDOW educators, a great opportunity to collaborate and learn from/with educators around the state! Check out #EdCampSTL and register soon!
It's often hard to "talk" at all...usually a presenter at the front of the room the whole time. Very little group interaction. I've been guilty of it. #moedchat
A1: I loved the range of topics:something for everyone! But if you do have a slot that doesn’t meet your needs...you get to make one up to teach and learn with others like you! So empowering and never see anyone longing in halls like other events.... #moedchat
I have a question for my #moedchat friends. Do you all have a whole day affair or use the half day model? We have been switching to the half day but I am not sure I like it #moedchat
A2: I'm a very structured person, so my first #edcamp was stressful because it was so unstructured. For me to have a successful experience, I have to go in with an open mind! #moedchat
Ours has always been a full day event. Our edcamp leader event is half day. We encourage people to stay as long as they need. If that's only 2 sessions, great.
#moedchat
A2: keep a close eye on the “live” agenda via your device. And remember you’ll have access to notes for the awesome sessions you miss due to all the great choices. #moedchat
A2 Coming out with an idea that I have to email out right away because it is that awesome. 1st timers - Lunch is PACKED every year - No matter where it is. Just find an open seat and start a conversation. #moedchat
A2 Ask questions, join the discussion, get ready to meet people who are as enthusiastic about your favorite topic as you are, relax, learn, repeat! #edcampstl#moedchat
If you are in a session that I am leading, I prefer people walk out if I am boring or not what they intended and I try to make that clear from the get go #moedchat
A2: Don't be shy at EdCamp. It's a safe place to make new connections. Share experiences. Ask questions. Everyone is there because they are passionate about kids and learning. #moedchat#edcampstl
There will be a lot of sessions at each time, because it's so big. If there are multiple topics you want to attend...remember the "Rule of 2 Feet." You can attend them all! #moedchat
A2 Having a couple ideas you can do now, notes you go back to later, and a list of people you can connect with.
If new-break out of your comfort zone. Talk to people you don't know, have conversations in the hall, go to sessions you are unfamiliar with. #moedchat
A2: If it is your first time, have an open mind. This experience will be like none other. However, with your open mind, you will begin to see how much more you develop professionally out of an Edcamp than traditional PD experiences. #MOedchat
A2: I would recommend a first time attendee to go in with an open mind- and maybe even risk signing up to present! I also think that co-presenting with someone who’s been to an #edcamp before could be great. #moedchat

I'd rather know what people really think when I'm presenting something so I can be more helpful. If they leave, I assume what we're doing doesn't apply to them. That' ok. #moedchat

A2: Come with a friend who is daring like you, and if a session time winds up open and you have an idea, jump in and lead that conversation! (People will assume you've done this before) LOL #moedchat
As one of the people on the planning team for #EdcampSCSD I'd like to spend more time on promoting our event than begging for swag. But I know they are enticing for some people. #Moedchat
And, even if they don't want to sign up for a topic, keep in mind that they can contribute in ANY session - there isn't just one presenter per session! #moedchat
Q3: One of the biggest benefits of participating in a professional learning event is the opportunity to network with others. What do you do to make connections at an event, and continue connecting beyond the event? #MOedchat#EdCampSTL
A3: I love the new Twitter QR code feature! Meet new peeps and follow them to keep in touch about how you both take new learning back to students! #moedchat
A1: One of my favorite things about #EdCamp model is I know I won’t be disappointed in the topics— something for everyone & I always leave with new ideas & knowledge #MOedchat#EdCampSTL
Q1: If you’ve attended an #EdCamp, what do you feel is the best part of the EdCamp model?
If you’re unfamiliar, what questions do you have about the EdCamp model? #MOedchat#EdCampSTL
A3: Don't feel like you ALWAYS have to be in a session. If you start a great conversation, keep that going instead of rushing off to the next session. #moedchat
A3 have side conversations during sessions. I'm introverted by nature (some would argue with that), but I force myself to talk to others I didn't know before. #moedchat
A3 love chatting with other librarians to get ideas. This year I'm looking at instructional tech peeps instead since I'm helping at my school with that now. Need to make some new friends. :) #moedchat
A3: swapped info with fellow math coaches to expand my LPN and support network. I always need more math brains to talk through topics with throughout the year. Don't be shy, everyone is so eager to share #moedchat

A3 Follow people you meet on Twitter, check out session documents, whether you attended that session or not and look at participants and follow or connect. #moedchat#edcampstl
A3: Grow your #PLN. Be friendly. Strike up conversations. Smile a lot. Introduce yourself. Many people use their twitter handle on name badges. Follow new friends/people from whom you learn. (Not literally around the bldg, on Twitter, lol.) #moedchat#edcampstl
A4: hmmm....good question. I think more so than improving edcamp, how do we get more people to know what they are and interested in attending one! #moedchat
a4 I would like to see all conferences offer a first session where ppl find out what they might have in common. Who needs a lunch buddy, etc. #moedchat
a4 I would like to see all conferences offer a first session where ppl find out what they might have in common. Who needs a lunch buddy, etc. #moedchat
But...you also run the danger of the person who thinks they have the education "problem" figured out and tanks a session because they monopolize the conversation. #moedchat
I am a new teacher! Considering myself a sponge ready to absorb all these great ideas and information to help me grow as an educator! #MOedchat#EdCampSTL
Q5: Has your school or district implemented non-traditional professional learning models, like EdCamp, badging, etc.? Tell us about your experiences.
#MOedchat
Every now and again we have some community folks show up. It is cool most of the time. We have had a couple who came with an agenda and that sucked #moedchat
You gotta be careful around @michelelkelly, she’ll say that she’s going to be there (like joining chats) but won’t actually show up unless you give her lots of reminders. #remembermoedchatmichele#moedchat

That sounds like a good idea, Lane. People do need lunch buddies. At the last @EdCampLI, I had lunch with a new person to the edcamp model and we shared some great ideas. #moedchat (Carol ELA Consultant from Long Island popped in)

I think one of the best things for our school last year was @principlcroley and several teachers, all of different strengths and years of experience doing #edcampstl together. #moedchat
A5: I have suggested the #EdCamp model for #PD. It hasn’t stuck yet, but I’m hopeful it will happen by next year. We preach #stuvoice & #stuchoice- need more choice for Ts in their #profdev. #moedchat
A4: I love just about everything about #edcamp. This may seem silly, but something that would help me is a good map of the place where the camp is being held so I don’t feel so disoriented #MOedchat#EdCampSTL
At last year's @EdCampLi one of my friends who is an Asst Supt told me that he was going to try an edcamp model workshop day in his district. #MOEDchat
A5. I have participated in a couple mixed pd opportunities. Online, in person, virtual. It is much easier for a already hectic schedule but still gives you some human contact. #moedchat
I recently got a BBQ branding iron that you can interchange the letters on and I’ll be honest, that is a skill. To brand “awall’s hot dog” on a hot dog is tough #moedchat

A5. Tried them small scale, one building & 2-3 buildings for a half day pds. Very successful. Would LOVE to see buy-in from our central admin to do district-wide day. Need to get them to #edcampSTL so they can see for themselves how amazing it is. #moedchat#shiftthis
I know schools/dist ease into the model by saying it's an Edcamp & including some blank sessions surrounded by scheduled speakers/workshops. Blending the traditional w/ non-traditional. #moedchat
I LOVE TeachFest, TechFest, I think it's one of the most exciting things FHSD does and @MmeBurton is one very impressive techie leading out in so many ways.
I would try asking for a mini edcamp experience in one building on a PD day. Try 2 sessions of 25-30 min. The leaders will see how much the teachers love it. #Moedchat
A5 I LOVE when we get asked what we need PD on. What is beneficial for our practice and our teaching world. That is why I like edcamp. If it isn't meaningful, you start a session. Or get up and find one that is. #meaningfullearning#moedchat
At last year's @EdCampLi one of my friends who is an Asst Supt told me that he was going to try an edcamp model workshop day in his district. #MOEDchat
Q6: The rest of the chat will be EdCamp style! Throw out a topic or question that YOU would like to discuss, and start a conversation! #MOedchat#EdCampSTL
Are we talking about having parents at school or attending an edcamp? I thought it was the latter. How things are framed at the start of the day and in each session matters especially if you have a variety of stakeholders. #moedchat
We use Wordpress with the Credly BadgeOS addon. It costs, but not a ton. Does lots of the work for you. Here's my site: https://t.co/0A3Ens3p0o#moedchat
A6 to what degree do you care about the actual appearance of your students work? Do you only look for the graded aspect or do you look at overall look? Asking for a friend... #moedchat
Initially it was parents/community/etc having a presence/voice at Edcamp. I believe those stakeholders want to contribute but aren't sure how. This would open the convo up #moedchat
We've had pretty good results with region-wide edcamp-style PD. Some Ts still prefer formal presentation, but most appreciate being able to choose sessions. #babysteps#moedchat#edcampSTL
I send out a needs assessment at the beginning of each semester. Design PD and coaching around that. Teachers know they had a voice, more motivated to participate. #moedchat

A6 Carrie Ann, that is the hard part-trying to lure others to the table of learning in a way that is foreign to some. Positivity and gentle encouraging is a way I use to invite others to move toward a digital identity. #moedchat
I would be open to this as a concentrated subedcamp in the morning or afternoon, so non-educators didn't feel pressured to try and find sessions to sit in all day waiting for the parent/community sessions #moedchat#edcampstl
