We hope that folks will be able to keep up with all the incredible resources tonight, but we'll create a summary of the chat for those who join late or need to process! #JCPSChat
#JCPSChat Hi. I’m Jacque Van Houten, World Language specialist and I used to teach French. I’m excited to hear more people find the resources and what others they need.
Sorry. Didn’t follow directions. Brooke, Hardin County. I teach teachers and then I also teach the best kids in the world Python & JS and project development & mgmt at our tech center! 💪🏻 #jcpschat
Q1: - Where do you go (does not have to be virtual) to find quality instructional resources. Please list any hashtags or tag organizations if possible). #JCPSChat
Most of my resources come from digital communities like #langchat or #mfltwitterati . Great lurking for WL, even if not an active participant. @actfl is my professional org of choice for resources, and I also use communities around tools like @Flipgrid or @nearpod#JCPSChat
Q1: - Where do you go (does not have to be virtual) to find quality instructional resources. Please list any hashtags or tag organizations if possible). #JCPSChat
Virtually, blogs are my go-to most of the time. A quick search and I find what I need. I usually hit up TPT's freebies when I need something quick and specific. #jcpschat
Q1: - Where do you go (does not have to be virtual) to find quality instructional resources. Please list any hashtags or tag organizations if possible). #JCPSChat
A1: naturally I love my #kygodigital family. I also pick up a ton on #edtechteam. Recently I’ve fallen in love with Skillshare classes for adobe and graphic design skills. Udemy for programming and app development. #jcpschat

Q1. A1. I have a daughter who teaches in NYC and I used to teach in Orange County, CA so I stay in contact with those teacher/colleagues who have a larger ESL population to see what is working with their scholars and see if it is a fit. #SIOP18#jcpschat
A1: The #2ndaryela Facebook group is a gold mine of resources. 10k+ English teachers in one place? BAM! I get many ideas from that group and am directed to other resources there. #JCPSChat
A1: I have gotten amazing resources from @Scholastic with their #ScholasticAction magazine! They have amazing stories and resources for emerging readers! #jcpschat
Student Achievement Partners has high-quality resources, also like Article of the Week- Jim Burke or Dave Stuart and Newsela for informational texts #JCPSChat
A1 i’m a big believer in attending professional conferences for your content area or generic education. ACTFL, KWLA, SCOLT, and international ones! Great for networking, and then following others tweets blogs etc. lots to learn from a lot of good people. #JCPSChat
A1: Check out #OER and #GoOpen for open resources.
Generally, these can be remixed, remade, restructured, and repurposed however you like.
Even if they're not great, you can change them ;) #JCPSChat

Also A1: I'm turning the @kyedchat account into a bot to retweet all the cool stuff shared on the multiple awesome hashtags we use in the Bluegrass.
Keep your eyes peeled and follow :)
#JCPSChat#kyedchat
Q2: From @kids_inspire - Considering the backpacks we are designing for our students & knowing the kind of evidence they will need, what do teachers need in THEIR backpacks? #JCPSChat#JCPSDL
A1.2: I also find a lot of inspiration and am directed to resources through Instagram. I know that sounds crazy, but seeing how others think through and approach concepts helps me. #JCPSChat
A2 Collaborative skills, first & foremost. Ts won't be able to pull off real, authentic digital "backpacks" in isolation. Beg, borrow, steal.... and, most of all, collaborate! #jcpschat
Q2: From @kids_inspire - Considering the backpacks we are designing for our students & knowing the kind of evidence they will need, what do teachers need in THEIR backpacks? #JCPSChat#JCPSDL
A2 The desire to continue to grow. Let Twitter help you make new virtual best friends. Be fearless in being an advocate for the forgotten child #JCPSChat
My advice is questionable at best ;)
I'm the crash test dummy of education. I change curriculums multiple times per year.
And I try everything I find, even when it stinks.
Actually, I think my kids are the crash test dummies ;) #JCPSChat
A2 Photos. Short videos. They really help jog memory later on. Even if you have to blur faces or whatever. Make sure you capture the things that worked and didn't. I like @googlephotos#jcpschat
Q2 A.2 I would love to have the opportunity to physically work in the summer with the authors that I'm reading and studying with on #twitter. I wish there was more $$ to bring others in or to see strategies in action in our own district. #JCPSChat
A2: @kids_inspire teachers need to know how to use different math strategies for students to build their own toolkit for solving math problems. Teachers need to let students "play" with math so they can develop the math algorithm on their own. #JCPSChat
A1: All things Alice Keeler to get my Google on and then I am a constant researcher of blogs to gather ideas. I keep an interactive spreadsheet to store my ideas and then tweak them and bounce then off of other teachers. Estimation180 and Dan Meyer are awesome. #JCPSChat
A2-
Compassion & empathy first
Collaboration & communication second
Desire to grow, deep passion for the tough fight, content knowledge, digitially literate disposition, and underpinning it all WORK ETHIC.
#jcpschat
Q2: From @kids_inspire - Considering the backpacks we are designing for our students & knowing the kind of evidence they will need, what do teachers need in THEIR backpacks? #JCPSChat#JCPSDL
A2) Thirst for •new• ideas- classroom management, activities, relationships. A dependable #PLN (real life and online). Something that feeds your soul and keeps you sane. #JCPSChat
Q2: From @kids_inspire - Considering the backpacks we are designing for our students & knowing the kind of evidence they will need, what do teachers need in THEIR backpacks? #JCPSChat#JCPSDL
A2: Middle School ELA teachers need skills to teach tier 3 struggling readers. #realtalk Grade level appropriate ways to address elementary level skill gaps in basic our students have are hard to come by. Pronounciation, fluency, etc #JCPSChat
A2: Having an understanding and appreciation for technology is a great tool to have in a teacher backpack. We shouldn't be afraid of technology in class, instead we should embrace it! #jcpschat
A2.2
Past the basic foundational skills:
- Literacy understanding across curriculum
- metacognitive strategies
- disposition to be coached
- ability to take risk without fear (and the climate to do it)
- high expectations coupled with the ability to individualize
#JCPSChat
A1 - I try to look for authentic resources on real French websites for kids. Once I find something on the topic I need thenI write a task that lets my kids use their skills @1jour1actu#jcpschat
Q3: From @FeliciaSmith25 - What resources might benefit educators to implement the ‘Habits of Mind’ concept for supporting professional learning and development for teachers? #JCPSChat#JCPSDL
A2-

- how to skillbuild
- how to connect to the real world
- relevancy in their delivery
- understanding if they fit into the team and school.

#JCPSChat
A2 Best methods to differentiate for gifted learners in the classroom. We don't often focus on talk on these students because they don't seem as needy. #JCPSChat
Q3: More opportunities for PLC of choice. I personally process best when I have discussions with others, and I would love to have that expanded to be outside of my building with people teaching the exact same level I am. #PLN is amazing, but receives no official nods #JCPSChat
Q3: From @FeliciaSmith25 - What resources might benefit educators to implement the ‘Habits of Mind’ concept for supporting professional learning and development for teachers? #JCPSChat#JCPSDL

Q2: From @kids_inspire - Considering the backpacks we are designing for our students & knowing the kind of evidence they will need, what do teachers need in THEIR backpacks? #JCPSChat#JCPSDL
A2: The relentless pursuit of discomfort.
Change happens outside our comfort zone. If we get comfortable, we're stuck.
Stay flexible, stay open, and stay in search of what's best for kids.
#JCPSChat
A2: Teachers need examples of what this looks like in their content. They need continuous support and training to develop skills. A growth mindset. And more training and support so that this becomes the culture. #JCPSChat
A2: The ability to collaborate and communicate with both peers and students. Teachers also need to have the skills to build positive relationships with students that allow them to challenge and encourage them. #JCPSChat
A1: I go to other classroom teachers first. I highly value the opinion of those rocking it out in their classroom every day. Outside of that, my core, ride or die, PLN consists of rockstars like @mspagesays, @ChanceyChat, @WYLibraryDragon#JCPSChat
I'm journaling at the end of my day about how and what I'm thinking about who really learned and what was successful and why. Thinking about thinking is important to me. #jcpschat#Mindfulness
A3 - I think that applying past knowledge to new thinking is one of these?? With our shift to deeper and personalized learning, I think this is one many of us need to work on - self included @FeliciaSmith25#JCPSChat
A2: Time for self care. More opportunities for conversation across schools that allow us to practice the collaborative skills that we hope to nbuild in our students.#JCPSChat
A1c #JCPSChat When all else fails there’s still Facebook. I posted a video about the French consul gen. praising Whitney young elementary school and just tonight heard from a contact that Whitney Young’s daughter wanted a copy! How exciting maybe we can get her to come to JCPS
A3.2: Making sure teachers have enough time in their day to self reflect. Planning is often for planning or copies, but it would be useful to have set aside time for reflection. Also, more and more T-led PD. #JCPSChat
A3: @FeliciaSmith25@kids_inspire The math standards have mathematical practices that reference the Habits of Mind and are referenced on the curriculum maps. https://t.co/evFaLob7Hu references many of these habits in its curriculum. #JCPSChat
A3: Keeping an open mind and not taking anything personally is important. A great starting point would be right here in @JCPS. We have so many wonderful resources within our own district. #JCPSChat
A3: Built in time for schools to engage in conversation and share/develop resources. Creating connections between schools to stretch ourselves to meet the needs of JCPS students, not just the ones in front of us.#JCPSChat
A4: I swear I use Pintrest for just education purposes and nothing else!! Also I love exploring blogs for ideas which will lead me other ideas. #jcpschat
A4. Our own Louisville Community Resources are amazing. We have so many willing contributors right here in our city....Teddy Abrams, Actors Theater, Stage One, independent artists. Appallatin. I've used them all. #ARTSINLOUISVILLE#jcpschat
A2: For students to be able to think in context. Why did something happen and what are the possible consequences and ramifications to that decision being made.
#JCPSChat
A4: For #SEL I look toward the school counseling staff quite a bit. They always have resources and ideas. For other soft skills, I use lots of @BIEpbl and/or VALUE rubrics to help guide activities and instruction #JCPSChathttps://t.co/8Pla2OWUk6
A4 I won’t lie, @TpTdotcom is a huge timesaver for me. If I am teaching about physical characteristics and I want to play guess who for students to practice speaking I will definitely spend two dollars for 24 pre-made boards 😂 #JCPSChat
A3: Many if these are included in the National Core Arts Standards and I consult our compassion teacher for resources. I include compassion strategies and a mindful minute before each of my classes. It works like a charm. #JCPSChat
A4 CASLS puts out A great newsletter for world language & ESL teachers with text and links to classroom activities, funding sources, new publications etc. @actfl@AATSPglobal@aatf@aatg our other sources. https://t.co/c8ge3AAxBs too. #JCPSChat
A4.1 The Commonwealth Theater Center (formally Walden Theater). Loved having them in my classroom collaborating with me to use theater in science #JCPSChat
A3: Many if these are included in the National Core Arts Standards and I consult our compassion teacher for resources. I include compassion strategies and a mindful minute before each of my classes. It works like a charm. #JCPSChat
A5- that’s a tough one. Comes back to sound instructional design. Align it next to the standards and check congruency. From a principals perspective spot check departments/ PLCs but otherwise provide training so they know how to do it well. #jcpschat
A5 Sometimes resources are just that. Supplements, answers, tools, models, etc. If they support yours or students' goal, officially aligned or not, then they are worth a bit of time exploring and playing. #jcpschat
A4: @hopekingteach always integrates the related arts and inspires me to adapt her engaging lessons for my students. @responsiveclass is a resource at every level to help develop a classroom family that supports each other. #JCPSChat
A5: I think this part is all in the planning. If you are working from a strong backwards-design template, then the alignment (and therefore utility) will be clear. #JCPSChat
A4. Every foreign embassy Has the website, a Twitter ID and usually some kind of newsletter. It’s great fun to follow those in another language if you speak one, but there’s plenty of information put out in English too about current events culture economics etc. #JCPSChat
A5- that’s a tough one. Comes back to sound instructional design. Align it next to the standards and check congruency. From a principals perspective spot check departments/ PLCs but otherwise provide training so they know how to do it well. #jcpschat
A5: Knowing the standards helps. If you really like a resource online, there is a way to align it to standards. You just have to be creative! #jcpschat
A5 Sometimes resources are just that. Supplements, answers, tools, models, etc. If they support yours or students' goal, officially aligned or not, then they are worth a bit of time exploring and playing. #jcpschat
A2: A good place to go when looking for #SEL resources is the CASEL website. Educators from various districts have included various activities, lessons, and presentations. Check out PATHS, Second Steps, and Lions Quest as CASEL approved research based programs for SEL #JCPSChat
A4 Cross chat learning! @mikepaul just shared some wise words in #JCPSchat:
"The relentless pursuit of discomfort. Change happens outside our comfort zone. If we get comfortable, we're stuck. Stay flexible, stay open, & stay in search of what's best for kids.
#NYEDChat
I think most credible resources will already have them aligned. I spent the greater portion of my evenings this week aligning #ShatteredGlassSTEM to NGSS, Common Core, ISTE & Future Ready. You want others to see you mean business (& that you are trustworthy) #jcpschat💪🏻👊🏻
A5: Use resources as a jumping off point in instructional design. Determine the target to be met and the criteria for success, then find the product to get students there. Gather resources and make them your own.#JCPSChat
A2: A good place to go when looking for #SEL resources is the CASEL website. Educators from various districts have included various activities, lessons, and presentations. Check out PATHS, Second Steps, and Lions Quest as CASEL approved research based programs for SEL #JCPSChat
A4: I go everywhere from state and international organizations to right here in our community. It really depends on the project. I consult practicing professionals in the field, colleagues and people who are reputable. #JCPSChat
I agree that you need to know your standards. To add to that, I also believe you need to know how the standards you are responsible for fall in the progression of the concept/topic from grade to grade. Have to make sure you are teaching correct grade level #JCPSChat
Q6: From @teacherladyKY - How can we leverage technology beyond just a ‘giver of information’ to deepen student learning through synthesis & creation? #JCPSChat#KyTechChat
A5.2- and as I think about it more this is a real that quality training for the GCCs to master specifically from a digital/ online perspective to them train team leads and DCs.
#jcpschat
A6: Let technology be the tool that helps you identify the strengths and weaknesses in your students’ learning. Technology can be so powerful for individualizing lessons when it is used correctly. #JCPSchat
Q6: From @teacherladyKY - How can we leverage technology beyond just a ‘giver of information’ to deepen student learning through synthesis & creation? #JCPSChat#KyTechChat
A5: It requires plenty of sifting through the online resources and regularly unpacking the standards. For science, @PhETsims align well with NGSS standards. #JCPSChat
A6- Tech for techs sake is the modern equivalent of a worksheet. We must place the emphasis on human interaction and relationships with our peers and students.
#jcpschat
Q6: From @teacherladyKY - How can we leverage technology beyond just a ‘giver of information’ to deepen student learning through synthesis & creation? #JCPSChat#KyTechChat
A6.1: getting out of our comfort zones as teachers! Trying new things and viewing tech as a tool for specific end goals but not something to use bc we can and it’s sometimes “easier” on us. #jcpschat
A6.1: My technology evaluation answer is always "What can it do better than just paper and pencil?" Technology as a mere analog for something else does not promote grown in students or teachers. Instead, before use, it should be evaluated for its built in Inquiry...#JCPSChat
A6 That depends...where did you ask students to start on Bloom's Taxonomy? If you've asked them to start at "create" then the #edtech flows much easier into synthesis and creation. #jcpschat
A6 Using tech to tell stories. Photos, video, @cospaces_edu, @GoogleForEdu slides, podcasting.... So many options for our kids to tell awesome and creative stories. #jcpschat
EdTech is a powerful tool to deliver knowledge. It is not the solution to every problem. A bad lesson is still a bad lesson even if it is in a google classroom. We have to keep that in mind. #jcpschat
A6. Trust or learners. They dominate with tech and we should be listening to them and use sound pedagogy that teaches them how to use that tech savvy to synthesize, create, learn! #JCPSChat
A6.2: Collaboration, and Creation abilities. If you just want a simple "try this", check out @Flipgrid, @nearpod, and @piktochart for educators communities. Endless potential. #JCPSChat
A6.2: also, I try to think what toolS can I use to achieve “x”. Instead of just “what one program” can I put kids on today? Technology for technology’s sake is a no go. #JCPSChat
A6:Be discerning. Don’t choose and use all new tech that you find. It’s overwhelming for students. Push yourself to find new ways to use one piece of tech in as many ways as you can. I just rolled out @Flipgrid and have used it to create and evaluate across subjects #JCPSChat

#jcpschat
Q6: From @teacherladyKY - How can we leverage technology beyond just a ‘giver of information’ to deepen student learning through synthesis & creation? #JCPSChat#KyTechChat
A6: The best advice on technology use is to have students try out different types. They will always find what is best for them and the best to use for a certain task. #jcpschat
A6:Be discerning. Don’t choose and use all new tech that you find. It’s overwhelming for students. Push yourself to find new ways to use one piece of tech in as many ways as you can. I just rolled out @Flipgrid and have used it to create and evaluate across subjects #JCPSChat

A6: This generation has had technology for almost all of their lifetime. They are more knowledgeable in technology but just need the right push to use it correctly and productively. #jcpschat
Q7: From @michelleshory - What are some innovative ways schools are meaningfully integrating tech, even if they aren’t a ‘1 to 1’ school? Be specific/tag users if possible. #JCPSChat
I have some serious #flipgridfever too. I cannot get enough of all the ways it is useful to students, me, parents, and bringing community into the classroom. #JCPSChat
A6 - With technology, you've got to be purposeful in it's use. Technology must be "value-add" and not the "thinker" of the lesson/activity. Many times it's used because it's just FUN. #JCPSChat
A6 i’d love to see our schools do more partnering with international partners. I earn is one way if you can’t do it on your own. They’ll match you with the school for a specific project. That depends the learning and broadens the network for your learners. #jcpschat
#jcpschat I think we are all "woke" to this idea in general but it is the implementation, the "how we get from A to B" that keeps me up at night 🤔
Well, that and the occasional case of heartburn but that is neither here nor there... 😄
A6.2: also, I try to think what toolS can I use to achieve “x”. Instead of just “what one program” can I put kids on today? Technology for technology’s sake is a no go. #JCPSChat

Love the idea of a Skype w an expert in your field from another country!🤔I accept the challenge!
In line with widening your network, we've worked w @SkypeClassroom to create a global project for 🌎 Day 2018. So excited to see the kids connect! https://t.co/rOqOPXD6Gk#JCPSChat
A6. 1): Technology can be such a powerful tool for instruction. But it needs to be exactly that...a tool to help meet specific learning goals. I constantly have students collaborate, synthesize and create using tech. #JCPSChat
A7: While I don't have specific examples, one trend I've noticed across innovative tech vs. tech for tech's sake is how much training has been provided at both the school-wide and the individual teacher level. #JCPSChat

A7: you should talk with @Bartley_B1000 and what we've done with our Tiger Alerts system for increasing POSITIVE communication with parents ;)
#JCPSChat
A6 a I I think the best we can do is model for our kids by using the technology to broaden our resources and collaborative networks. I’d like to see principles Skype into their faculty meetings experts or authors from around the world to share and collaborate. #jcpschat
A7: Believe it or not, cellphones can be a great tool for students. You have @Flipgrid@PearDeck@GetKahoot and other great resources that can be accessed on cellphones #jcpschat
A6 I try to only use technology when it makes learning more accessible for learners and viewing their learning easier for me. If it’s feeling too complicated or just like a digital version of a worksheet then choose different tech/task #JCPSChat
Through the use of stations and careful planning! You can have many students access tech throughout the week even with a couple of devices! #blendedlearning it doesn’t have to be “everyone is on this program at the same time on the same day”! #JCPSChat
A7: Also @GoogleForEdu can be accessed from a phone as well. You can use Docs, Slides, Classroom and any other app from your phone and can be used at home too. #jcpschat
#jcpschat we are about 1:2 as a campus (approximately 1k CBs give or take), they are on rolling charging carts, each team has 1 set of 30, each grade level has a floating cart of 30 (this structure is for MS side, HS is similar).
Planning and scheduling for intervention

A7: I am using tech in music as a tool for students to create their own music and music videos as public service announcements. Some of our classes use Google Classroom as well. #JCPSChat
Q7: From @michelleshory - What are some innovative ways schools are meaningfully integrating tech, even if they aren’t a ‘1 to 1’ school? Be specific/tag users if possible. #JCPSChat
#jcpschat that pesky character limit got me! Equity, collaboration, patience, understanding, prioritization strong culture of Ss first are ALL required in the really ohases of moving TOWARD 1:1 when you aren't QUITE there yet!
#jcpschat we are about 1:2 as a campus (approximately 1k CBs give or take), they are on rolling charging carts, each team has 1 set of 30, each grade level has a floating cart of 30 (this structure is for MS side, HS is similar).

A7: I am using tech in music as a tool for students to create their own music and music videos as public service announcements. Some of our classes use Google Classroom as well. #JCPSChat
A7: Give students choice when possible. Some students are creative by drawing/writing, some are creative by speaking or with skits, etc. Embrace their strengths. #JCPSChat
A6: Without trying, and failing, different things, students don’t learn what they may be good at. Tech can be a great tool to help that experimentation. Trying different tech to get different creative outcomes.
#JCPSChat
A6: 2) Teachers should be using tech for more than just “engaging” students. Tech should be also used to empower students in their learning and growth. Teachers must have extensive knowledge not only in their curriculum, but in the tech tools needed to achieve success. #JCPSChat
A8- no questions. But I will say this: when we do this right it will matter and impact kids and our city. Excited to see all the work being done already. #jcpschat
A7 i’m about to buy linguafolio online for all the lang Trs to use with their students. It provides a site for self assessment in language skills and intercultural competence he‘s and allows kids to upload evidence and chart their progress. https://t.co/iq32YR3WTS#jcpschat
