Welcome Coaches to the #swarmfbchat - Glad to have you. Let's check in with name, school, position. Use our hashtag in all tweets for max exposure. Talking off-season education! Looking to pick up some good tools for January.
Q1: For the staff - what are you doing to increase football knowledge? Clinics/Webinars/College Visits? Do you do this alone or as an entire staff? #swarmfbchat
Q1: For the staff - what are you doing to increase football knowledge? Clinics/Webinars/College Visits? Do you do this alone or as an entire staff? #swarmfbchat
A1: set a to-do list first and include everyone who wants to be a part of it... connecting with colleges during recruiting has been great! Been invited to two campuses this winter so far, AFCA and Glazier too #swarmfbchat
A1: Both; I will attend AFCA in Jan with HC and staff goes to Glazier in Nashville (with wives). Always looking to travel and meet up with coaches. #swarmfbchat
A1: Glazier clinics, a few smaller clinics as a team. I try to find clinics I can go to that are close that interest me too. Thanks to @slade248 and @JustinYClark last year for their air raid chat.
A1 well I plan on doing some clinicing and trying to set up a visit @OLineWorld65 in Phoenix and trying to def attend the @Hogfbchat clinic #swarmfbchat
A1: We will go visit colleges. Went to SMU last spring. Planning on visiting TCU this spring as a staff. We will also watch clinic videos on our own/as a staff. #swarmfbchat
Q1: For the staff - what are you doing to increase football knowledge? Clinics/Webinars/College Visits? Do you do this alone or as an entire staff? #swarmfbchat
A1) Will normally hit one clinic as a staff, coordinators give a list of things to look for when selecting speakers. Try to take a couple trips on my own visiting schools/clinics. #swarmfbchat
A1: #SwarmFBChat
We do a great job attending clinics, going to 2 minimum during Jan&Feb, and will likely be more.
We also invited 3 or 4 coaches to our Field House to talk to us last offseason. Was great chalk talk & networking.
A1) State assoc clinic each Jan (I'm speaking this year!) as a staff overnight. Glazier clinic in Novi, MI and online with that. I also reach out to college coaches who run our scheme when I have q's #swarmfbchat
A1: All of the above. I'm the past we have tried to do one big one together. Make it a bonding experience and then guys go to as many as possible on their own. #swarmfbchat
Q1: For the staff - what are you doing to increase football knowledge? Clinics/Webinars/College Visits? Do you do this alone or as an entire staff? #swarmfbchat
A1: Always attend the OHSFCA clinic in Columbus. Love going to spring practices at the collegiate level, especially when they let us sit in on position meetings. Also do some collaboration with other coaches we have connections with. #swarmfbchat
A1 cont: I honestly get more out of reading on my own & talking shop and being able to ask questions than just sitting back and watching a powerpoint. #swarmfbchat
A1b. Used to 💙 the UMich clinic when Lloyd Carr was coach. On-field drill demos, practice, chalk talk after dinner with position coaches, and the food was 💯 #swarmfbchat
A1) Usually hit 2 Glaziers in Mi, AFCA, State Clinic,& a couple smaller one's. Usually do a day w/ MSU staff & try to meet up with some others. Looking to meet up with more HS staffs this off season. #swarmfbchat
A2. I challenge my position coaches to find new material and we have open discussions by position. Like to give ownership to each position #swarmfbchat
A2: We have a state rule that only allows one coach to meet with 5 players I believe. We don't want to push the rule. Would love to be able to hold whole group meetings but just like teaching, small group instruction can be really valuable too #swarmfbchat
A2) Yes. Utilized the go army app for meetings last year, gave us a great head start with alignments and assignments going into spring ball. #swarmfbchat
A2 cont: we also meet twice a week for lifting - didn't want to make it seem the meetings were the only thing we did. Just that it was an education topic tonight :) #swarmfbchat
A2) It really depends on what we feel we need that off season. Some have been more frequent leadership meetings. When we have switched schemes we would have a 2 meetings a month. #swarmfbchat
Yes. We will start sometime in January. We're a very small school, so all four of us will meet. We'll meet once or twice a month until summer. #swarmfbchat
A1 hoping to go to national clinic this year, will also go to @MemphisFB spring practices and chalk talk sessions with @Coach_Norvell and staff, also constantly scouring internet for any football content #swarmfbchat
Q1: For the staff - what are you doing to increase football knowledge? Clinics/Webinars/College Visits? Do you do this alone or as an entire staff? #swarmfbchat
Q3: Regardless of meetings (based on state rules), do you have your guys watch film (old practices, games, etc). Do you utilize a tool for learning or a time log? Any graded assessments? #swarmfbchat
A1&A2) Sounds like we will be having monthly staff meetings, plus at least one Glazier clinic and a local clinic down in SLC at Cottonwood. #swarmfbchat
A2)We will have QB school two times a week once we get back from Christmas break. Pretty excited about that. First time doing it. Any advice? #swarmfbchat
All of our kids have HUDL accounts. We put notes on most every game and practice. We encourage them to watch on their own, read the notes, and ask ?s when they have them #swarmfbchat
A3) I'd like to teach them "how" to watch film. Our kids are pretty good about putting in the time, I am just not sure the quality of the film study. Spring ball ideas. #swarmfbchat
Q3: Regardless of meetings (based on state rules), do you have your guys watch film (old practices, games, etc). Do you utilize a tool for learning or a time log? Any graded assessments? #swarmfbchat
A3. YES! We watch film together and I track their Hudl hours. We start with looking at last year, then by June we'll be looking at opponent film for the opener. #swarmfbchat
A3: We will indeed watch old game film - critique our technique. I will also utilize our @JustPlaySS software to quiz them on alignment/rules to help learn the position. #swarmfbchat I'm thinking about giving it for "homework" in between meetings.
A2: Off-season mostly stays for lifting and conditioning we will talk over stuff individually if needed won't do much if any position or team meeting till summer when we have The majority of the team present #swarmfbchat
A3: Every coach is different. I don't have mandatory film or assessments for my position. I want my kids to forget about football for a while. Go be a high schooler, play other sports, don't want football to become a job they dread & get burned out on. #swarmfbchat
A3: We encourage them all to go back and watch games and practices. They all have Hudl accounts so the access is there for them to study on their own. We will put notes on games and practice film. #swarmfbchat
A3: Yes hopefully they voluntarily watch our film from this past year. I'm currently charting our films. That way our kids can see our terminology, what the other team gained, etc. just like they would with scout tape during season #swarmfbchat
Q3: Regardless of meetings (based on state rules), do you have your guys watch film (old practices, games, etc). Do you utilize a tool for learning or a time log? Any graded assessments? #swarmfbchat
I think @coachmikerowe uses Google Classroom. It's a free thing Google puts out for educators. I use it for my math classes. Want to start using it for my football guys. #swarmfbchat
A3: All players have access to hudl. We encourage them to watch old games watch for mistakes especially but also what we did good. I like keeping an eye on how much time guys watch tells you who is really wanting to learn and put in that extra effort #swarmfbchat
Q3: Regardless of meetings (based on state rules), do you have your guys watch film (old practices, games, etc). Do you utilize a tool for learning or a time log? Any graded assessments? #swarmfbchat
A1 For myself I try to soak up everything on YouTube and anything online. Download college games and put them on hudl. About 5 of us are going to the AFCA which is always fun!!! #swarmfbchat
A2: Our main off-season focus is lifting. Strength is the foundation so it gets the most attention. Schemes seem to work better if everyone is strong ☺ #swarmfbchat
Q4: Do you have players look at a playbook? Do they get a hard copy? Digital copy? How do you check for understanding? Quiz/Verbal/Physical? #swarmfbchat
A2 ooo absolutely!!!! We def got smarter this season and I would like to amplify that if possible...... I want my LBs to know everything possible #swarmfbchat
Yes, we are a Google school, so I use a classroom for DL and also for weight training. I post game plans, scout reports in season, other nuggets off season. Use a Google sheet to track attendance in weightroom that everyone sees. I 💙 it
Q3: Regardless of meetings (based on state rules), do you have your guys watch film (old practices, games, etc). Do you utilize a tool for learning or a time log? Any graded assessments? #swarmfbchat
A4: We will utilize a digital playbook this year with built-in quizzes that I create (most with video). I want them to be able to look at it more than just during a meeting. Need a way to reinforce concepts IMO #swarmfbchat
A4. Playbook is on hudl. We’ll go over it in meeting and walk through some stuff on the field. Some will be in small position groups, dline front for examples, some will be multiple groups, lb and dl blitz, and some is full 11.
#swarmfbchat
A4. Last summer I created a Defensive playbook on Google Slides. Share it with the players.
I created a few installs on Hudl during the season.
To check understanding, ask them questions & watch them do their job on the field.
#swarmfbchat
We do not use a playbook. Our plays are in an excel file that we use to create a wrist coach. All 11 players have their specific call/responsibility. We use verbal cues from that point to correct or adjust. #swarmfbchat
A4 digital copy via hudl. I’m going to get a just play solutions account for myself(once I get my money right) and see how well I like it. I love having the kids just use a white board and markers
#swarmfbchat
Q4: Do you have players look at a playbook? Do they get a hard copy? Digital copy? How do you check for understanding? Quiz/Verbal/Physical? #swarmfbchat
A4: Playbook is on @HudlFootball but still install on the board so guys can take notes and ask questions. We do lot of walk through and use different forms of walk through with pursuit to quiz knowledge. #swarmfbchat
Q4: Do you have players look at a playbook? Do they get a hard copy? Digital copy? How do you check for understanding? Quiz/Verbal/Physical? #swarmfbchat
A4. Printed position manual with alignment rules. Also post on our Google classroom for DL. Use film for teaching (end zone view is best). #swarmfbchat
A4: I have shared a PPT on Hudl with my position group in the past. Haven’t really quizzed them much. Would like to look into the justplayss site. #swarmfbchat
Q4: Do you have players look at a playbook? Do they get a hard copy? Digital copy? How do you check for understanding? Quiz/Verbal/Physical? #swarmfbchat
A4: currently I’m working on a defensive playbook. I’m in the midst of the rough draft. Talking to the staff about any adjustment, before spring I will present to the defense. #swarmfbchat
A4)Do not have a playbook for players or coaches. The coaches get a primer, just enough to understand and make them ask questions. Not sure our kids would know enough to be able to learn from paper. #swarmfbchat
Q4: Do you have players look at a playbook? Do they get a hard copy? Digital copy? How do you check for understanding? Quiz/Verbal/Physical? #swarmfbchat
Q5: Do you get any physical reps in? Position group work? Utilize small spaces with chairs? Garbage cans? Bodies? Just trying to think outside the box and not break rules of course. #swarmfbchat
A4: cont. I think when you install use different forms cause people learn differently. I'll also have our standard adjustments drawn up and clips attached to the playbook. #swarmfbchat

Q1: For the staff - what are you doing to increase football knowledge? Clinics/Webinars/College Visits? Do you do this alone or as an entire staff? #swarmfbchat
A4: We drill and kill from the moment we are allowed on the field in July. By the time they're seniors, they know our defense like the back of their hand. I'm big on formative assessments, quizzing the kids as we go. Looking for correct verbal answers #swarmfbchat
I'm thinking the opposite. I want my players to simply learn their jobs. How does knowing the free safety's responsibility in Man-Free coverage help a defensive tackle split a double team and hold his gap? #swarmfbchat
A4): I'll draw all of our route concepts on a board at the beginning of the season.
We don't use playbooks.
I tell to them to use a notebook or take pictures with their phone if they have it on them.
#swarmfbchat
A5. We will do alignment on garbage cans over the summer for DL, teach drills prior to camp so we're ready to roll day 1. That's been sufficient last few years. Fine line between prepared and burnt out. Different each year/group. Gotta know your kids! #swarmfbchat
A5: Not until spring ball, but that's normally a skeleton crew a lot of guys in other sports. Good time to work young guys or to work people at different positions. #swarmfbchat
Q5: Do you get any physical reps in? Position group work? Utilize small spaces with chairs? Garbage cans? Bodies? Just trying to think outside the box and not break rules of course. #swarmfbchat
Coaches - we were a little light in attendance, but we had great sharing. Let's continue to chat and share - invite others and build the network. I appreciate you all for showing up tonight! #swarmfbchat
A5)I'd love it but I will wait until spring and camps. As long as we have great weight room attendance and kids playing other sports, I am happy. #swarmfbchat
