The only classroom "pets" i have had as a teacher is the yearly caterpillars to butterfly experience. Caterpillars and the INSANE AMOUNT OF FLIES in my classroom. #kinderchat

A1: My K classes have had fish, caterpillars/butterflies, ants, those teeny frogs. We stopped doing ducklings many yrs ago bc rsrch showed it was not humane. #Kinderchat
  • KeeneeLou May 28 @ 9:12 PM EDT
Well, we haven't seen any signs since the nice man with the traps came to visit #humanetraps #kinderchat

    In reply to @happycampergirl
  • KeeneeLou May 28 @ 9:14 PM EDT
In G1 we had ducklings from a local funeral home (really) that we kept for 3 weeks and then returned #cute #smelly #slimy #kinderchat

  • dubioseducator May 28 @ 9:14 PM EDT
We have 2nd grade classes incubate eggs and the chicks go to a classmates farm #kinderchat
  • MeagUcht May 28 @ 9:14 PM EDT
I have not had my own classroom yet, but there was a fish tank in my grade 7 class that allowed for us to "escape" and then return. An important mental break. #kinderchat

Q2: Why haven't people had pets in their classrooms? #kinderchat
  • tiegradloeppky May 28 @ 9:18 PM EDT
Oh I didn't even think about a swimming pool! That must have taken a lot of space up! #kinderchat

    In reply to @tiegradloeppky
  • happycampergirl - Moderator May 28 @ 9:19 PM EDT
The biggest thing for me was: what happens to the animals after they leave the classroom? Unless you are 100% confident that they go on to healthy happy lives, then hatching them in class is not humane, to me. #kinderchat
    In reply to @tiegradloeppky
  • tiegradloeppky May 28 @ 9:19 PM EDT
A2: I am not 100% on this, #kinderchat, but I believe my district has a no pet policy. Not sure though. I'd like to have a beta. I have crazy allergies, so I have avoided pets. Animal hair, cedar shavings, dander get me stuffed up and gross. #kinderchat
  • KeeneeLou May 28 @ 9:19 PM EDT
We were in a large classroom and then we'd go outside to the front lawn and they'd play in the grass in a fenced area! #kinderchat
    In reply to @tiegradloeppky, @happycampergirl
  • MeagUcht May 28 @ 9:20 PM EDT
Seeing as during my entire education I only had one "pet" in my classroom, I think it is the teacher's willingness to care for them. Having a pet is a lot of work. Weekends/holidays are also a factor. #kinderchat
    In reply to @tiegradloeppky
  • KeeneeLou May 28 @ 9:20 PM EDT
We let our butterflies go free the day they emerge. I don't get them until I know they will survive the cold nights! #kinderchat
    In reply to @happycampergirl, @tiegradloeppky
  • MissUnderwood94 May 28 @ 9:21 PM EDT
A2: Well... my partner and I a couple months ago spent all our time cultivating ideas for inquiry activities and a story board to lead up to getting a fish. We finally had enough documentation to prove that they wanted one...see next post... #kinderchat
  • dubioseducator May 28 @ 9:21 PM EDT
A2 A hassle, extra work, allergies, space. Some of the reasons I’ve heard through the years #kinderchat
  • KeeneeLou May 28 @ 9:21 PM EDT
This is what I'm talking about! #kinderchat
    • gibsongr May 28 @ 9:20 PM EDT
Alas the young well-fed goldfish have departed to a better home. You really need an out when having classroom pets, esp for holidays and long weekends.
      In reply to @KeeneeLou, @tiegradloeppky
  • tiegradloeppky May 28 @ 9:21 PM EDT
I know we have an agriculture in the classroom program in BC where they will bring eggs in, and come take the chicks to a farm after. I never knew what farm though. I don't like the idea of them going to a cage. Our farm was free range in the barns, and prefer that. #kinderchat
    In reply to @happycampergirl

    Cool!! #kinderchat
    In reply to @MissUnderwood94
  • MissUnderwood94 May 28 @ 9:22 PM EDT
A2: Part two...the health and safety lady came in and said we were not allowed any pets or animals, made a 10 page policy, and pretty much made it impossible for us to have a fish. Therefore we now have a story board and a class of children asking but no fish. #kinderchat
  • MeagUcht May 28 @ 9:22 PM EDT
That is definitely a big factor! 🧐 When I was little, I was upset I didn't have a pet. But it was either that or my brother.... so I'm happy I have my brother. 😀 #kinderchat

  • tiegradloeppky May 28 @ 9:23 PM EDT

    In reply to @KeeneeLou, @happycampergirl
  • MissUnderwood94 May 28 @ 9:34 PM EDT
Haha I mistakenly took a drink before reading your reply...😀 Yes I know...you would think we were raising sharks not goldfish or beta fish! It is a shame, list of animals we can't have is long...it even includes bears and poisonous snakes...isn't it obvious...why?! #kinderchat
    In reply to @tiegradloeppky

Q4: How do you deal with the death of a class pet? (seriously, I cry after school if a caterpillar dies) #kinderchat
  • dubioseducator May 28 @ 9:34 PM EDT
Yes. Also I wonder if certain pets can help kids self regulate, ease them when upset or frustrated. Brings out the gentleness in some when out of control #kinderchat
    In reply to @tiegradloeppky
  • tiegradloeppky May 28 @ 9:35 PM EDT
OMG I am dying here laughing. Are you in the US? I keep thinking of those bear memes that went around after something Betsy Devos said!! #kinderchat

A4 Listen to what the kids need from you when a pet dies. Listen to their conversationwith each other and help them understand as best you can. Each situation is different. #kinderchat
  • happycampergirl - Moderator May 28 @ 9:37 PM EDT
SO MATTER OF FACTLY, and I get a new fish almost immediately. "Olaf died. This is my new fish, Winter." #kinderchat
    In reply to @tiegradloeppky
  • MeagUcht May 28 @ 9:37 PM EDT
In a Holistic Education course I took, we discussed the importance of introducing death when one talks about life. However, always done with respect, understanding and creating a calm environment. #kinderchat

  • KeeneeLou May 28 @ 9:38 PM EDT
One year, ALL the caterpillars died of a terrible Ebola-type virus. It was terribly disappointing, but, it led to lots of great questions and convo! #kinderchat

Oh that is tragic. I am heartbroken for you. I have concerns about my bunch this year. They have not looked the same as in the past. Love that you had great conversations about it. #kinderchat
    In reply to @KeeneeLou

I have found that kids are more attached to the existence of a fish than to any particular fish. #Kinderchat
  • KeeneeLou May 28 @ 9:40 PM EDT
It was pretty awful! They kinda exploded and so we talked about how that was NOT molting. Yikes. #kinderchat

Q5: What advice you would give to future "classroom pet" owners? Any type of advice. #kinderchat
  • happycampergirl - Moderator May 28 @ 9:41 PM EDT
The one year that SEVERAL of our caterpillars spontaneously... expired... my kids were more interested in the math than in the death: We had 10 caterpillars. 7 died. How many butterflies can we still have? #Kinderchat
  • KeeneeLou May 28 @ 9:42 PM EDT
Yes! It's a teachable moment! And, let's celebrate those guys who made it!! #kinderchat

A5: Keep it real and authentic and connected to the community of the class! #kinderchat
    In reply to @tiegradloeppky
  • MissUnderwood94 May 28 @ 9:44 PM EDT
A5: Set rules before you get the fish, boundaries, you do not want all 30 students always over visiting Freddy. #kinderchat
  • happycampergirl - Moderator May 28 @ 9:44 PM EDT
A5: All my jokes aside, choose a pet that you are prepared to take care of yourself over the summer & holidays. It will actually be YOUR pet, that you share with the class. That animal's wellbeing is YOUR responsibility. #Kinderchat
  • dubioseducator May 28 @ 9:44 PM EDT
With butterflies we often talked about they don’t all make it through the life cycle. They accepted that but were sad when caterpillars became butterflies and volunteered quite fly. But they were always happy and excited for those that did. #kinderchat
  • tiegradloeppky May 28 @ 9:47 PM EDT
That's been a hard lesson for some this year. The ones that don't get their wings, we gently put out with the flowers and talk about how they won't make it, but how they will still help nature. #kinderchat
    In reply to @dubioseducator
  • dubioseducator May 28 @ 9:47 PM EDT
A5. If you’ve never had a class pet I think fish are your best bet. A few in a fish tank. Fresh water fish. #kinderchat
  • tiegradloeppky May 28 @ 9:48 PM EDT
Q6: Has anyone used alternatives to pets in the classroom? Plants? Borrowing a pet? Adopting an animal at the zoo? #kinderchat
  • happycampergirl - Moderator May 28 @ 9:48 PM EDT
If, for any reason, YOU are not up for being a pet guardian, there are lots of programs that will bring animals into your classroom for a visit - look into those! #Kinderchat
  • KeeneeLou May 28 @ 9:49 PM EDT
A6: We are a rural school and we've had lots of animals visit us - goats, lambs, and calves have come to our playground! #kinderchat
    In reply to @tiegradloeppky
  • happycampergirl - Moderator May 28 @ 9:49 PM EDT
Some kids get way more into taking care of seeds than they do pets. I think the results are so much more obvious - from pot of dirt to LEAVES! #Kinderchat
  • MissUnderwood94 May 28 @ 9:50 PM EDT
A6: Since we cannot have pets, we have had "zoo to you" which is where the zoo comes into the building. Now I am not sure with the new health and safety if we will be able to do this or not. We also go to the zoo. We have plants, and garden outside. #kinderchat
    • tiegradloeppky May 28 @ 9:48 PM EDT

Also, with seeds, every child can have his/her own plant, and it is perfectly humane to re-home them at the end of the year! #Kinderchat

We’ve had much success with even rainforest animals come to visit. Look for these visits in your community #kinderchat
