On behalf of your moderators, welcome to #3rdchat. We are excited to have @FirstAtBat join us as our moderators as we learn more about #TeachSDGs together!
Hi I am Terry, once a co-moderator here at #3rdchat. Currently 2nd grade T in Florida. I learned about the SDGs this summer. I am probably about a 3. I want to learn so much more. #3rdchat
Hello! I am Lesa Haney. I learn alongside some amazing 3rd graders near Austin TX. I was at a 1 until @FirstAtBat suggested this as a topic. I am still very much a novice, but eager to learn more! #3rdchat
A1: I want my students to want to be a part of making the world better for all. I want them to be problem solvers. What better way to start this now. #3rdchat
I think the hiearchy is important for students to care about our community, environment, and then themselves as individuals. I don't know much about this though. Excited to learn. #3rdchat

A1 I think we all need to be part of something bigger than ourselves - to learn about and discover ways to give back and make the world better. To help them see the world is theirs #3rdchat
A1: It is our job to be responsible not just for our Ss academic growth and development but also educating them to be good citizens of the world #3rdchat

A2: Begin with talking. Share the goals, see what it means to them. Share literature. Join global projects that focus on the goals. Start with simple, small steps. #3rdchat
Lynn 3rd gr St. Louis MO. Aware of goal & do work some of these into sci. curriculum. Level 1.5 Participate in USGBC quest each year to help Ss actively raise awareness. #3rdchat

I was a part of a global project through @Buncee and my students I did a lot about the goal for water for everyone. It was so amazing to see where it took us. #3rdchat
We read The Water Princess. This opened up conversations about communities without water. We then skyped with @huels_ryan and students were amazed. #3rdchat
A2 Use visuals, video, and books, books, books to introduce them to students. Focus on building empathy and understanding, then discuss the call to action. Awareness is the first step. #3rdchat
A3: Look at your standards and bring alongside the goals. Think how you can make your Ss more aware. These goals fit nicely with many Science and Social Studies standards. #3rdchat
A3: I can see connecting the goals to books you are reading, STEM projects, science content, and more. Now that I have a growing awareness, I will be more intentional about embedding them. #3rdchat
The USGBC in conjunction w MO Botanical Gardens and other organizations sponsor a program called The Green Schools Quest. In addition there is Green Apple Day of Service. Also programs for global needs for water. #3rdchat
A3 easy to connect them to science and social studies lessons, current events around the world and close to home, and of course to the books you are reading #3rdchat
A3: Sometimes, we can find room for SDGs by projecting out and making genuine connections to the curriculum. Other times, you have to make room for a spontaneous learning experience. #3rdchat
A4: Start looking at newspapers, news, look at local information. Move from local to global. Share on a student friendly level...but realize they can understand more than you think. #3rdchat
I so agree. So, if we make ourselves aware of these goals, that would happen easier. It is one of my biggest reasons for bringing this new and important topic here tonight. #3rdchat

A4: I've gotten Time for Kids this year and the kids love it. Getting to hear about national and world events on a level that's accessible to them #3rdchat

What makes me so excited about these is the opportunity to connect what we are learning to global issues. This will bring relevance and a deeper meaning to what are are studying. #3rdchat
A5: Share what other students have done. Let them explore problems and design ideas for solutions. Give them time to look for solutions. Empower them. #3rdchat
There are some amazing kids out there who have truly done amazing things trying to solve real world problems. Share that with your kids. Inspire them. #3rdchat
Imagine, share a problem....like getting clean water. Let them explore, try innovative ideas. What could they do? I tried this with oil spills. They tried all kinds of things. #3rdchat
The videos are short but are tough to watch - we compare what it is like where we live v. where they live and why there are such problems.
It connects to some of our ELA and SS (people immigrating and the reasons they do so). #3rdchat
A6: For students to embrace the SDGs, they have to be ready to look beyond themselves. Create in them a desire to want to make this world a better place. #3rdchat
A6 empathy is all about understanding perspectives and feelings of others. It is critical to learning and teaching about the SDGs - them a call to action. What can we do to make this better. #3rdchat
A6: Exposing students to real world issues that especially affect other kids teach them that their problems are not always so huge. It gets them to think what is happening outside of themselves. #3rdchat
Q7: Take a look at goals 7, 12, 14 and 15. Think about the upcoming Earth day. How can we plan and possibly collaborate for instruction with the SDGs in mind? #3rdchat
A7: I would love to see some collaboration between us. We can focus on a goal and come up with plans. This would be a great place to start. They could plan to make a local change, and learn more about global issues. #3rdchat
A7: I am really big about 14 & 15 - we are constantly talking about the life that surrounds us. We just had an Arbor Day assembly and talked about the importance of trees and how they are "alive." #3rdchat
A6: The world is smaller than ever thanks to technology. Students will be interacting with others from around the world as they get older. They will need empathy to connect with others of different backgrounds and cultures. #3rdchat
A7: My school is bringing in an assembly next week about climate and pollution. Don't know too many details but now I want to try to tie in the SDGs! #3rdchat

Biogiraffe provides biographical stories that highlight the connections Ss can make with the world around them. We would love to implement more STEM people into our biographies. Any suggestions on people we might focus on? Thanks! #3rdchat#biogiraffe
A7: 14 and 15 can tie into our Structures of Life Science Unit. We study the structures of plants and animals. I can find SDG articles to support these goals alongside the curriculum goals. #3rdchat
