The #INeLearn hashtag is used for both asynchronous sharing and synchronous conversations. Include #INeLearn in your tweets if you want to share resources or questions with Indiana educators and school leaders. Asynchronously, the #INeLearn hashtag provides educators across the state of Indiana a central space for sharing. On Thursday evenings beginning at 8 CST/9 EST when you use the #INeLearn hashtag, you are joining a live conversation--the #INeLearn Twitter Chat. For one hour, we interact in real time having a virtual discussion.
Welcome to tonight’s #INeLearn chat! I’m Amy, principal/lead learner from Angola, your moderator tonight!
We are continuing our series on Digital Opportunities! Tonight, our topic - Digital Spring Cleaning! #INeLearn
Chris from Bloomington, Indiana. Teach world history for private online HS affiliated with Indiana University. Trying to keep up with both #sstlap and #INeLearn tonight. :)
Q1: When we tackle spring cleaning at home, we have a vision of a sparkling, clean house where we can relax and enjoy the season ahead. With that in mind, what is your vision for digital learning in your school/district?
#INeLearn
R1) That students learn strategies to search for sources effectively and to evaluate them successfully in order to use them for a productive end. #INeLearn
R1: That every learner would have the ability to choose and the knowledge to use the correct tool for the job whether it be paper or digital. #INeLearn#EdTech

#INeLearn
R1: digital learning should be crisp and clean. Easy to navigate, easy t find content, minimal clicks, visually appealing. If it’s boring looking, what would motivate your Ss to participate in it? #INeLearn
R1) Exactly the opposite of that example. Learning is messy. Students need to dig in and collaborate. Leave the clean for organizing their digital files. #INeLearn
Q2: Part of spring cleaning is purging what we’ve been holding on to without purpose. What policies/practices might you clean out in order to make your vision a reality?
#INeLearn
Always best learning practice instead of best teaching practice. The Ss learning practice should inform teaching practice. If that involves choosing paper over digital, so be it! Adults choose all the time, Ss should have the ability to choose also! #INeLearn
R1 My vision is Ts and Ss using the best tools (many would be tech tools - but not all) to teach, share, experiment, collaborate and demonstrate. #INeLearn
#INeLearn R1 More cultural conversations lessons for our Ss. Few weeks ago our sociology class visited with a class in Argentina 🇦🇷 to discuss gender inequality. Interesting to see that both countries have similar issues to deal with. Nice to hear perspectives from other Ss.
I like how this mirrors learning in general #INeLearn and bonus points for the alliteration--the temps might be in the 30s but brings to mind sheets drying in a spring breeze.

Very interesting point of view! Learning is messy, not necessarily clean. Maybe it is thinking about have that crystal clear vision, not necessarily the learning itself. #INeLearn
R1: Would love to see teachers embrace technology as a creation tool. I believe our Ss need to be interactive producers, not isolated consumers #inELearn

#INeLearn R1 Also Had a cultural conversation with a class from Monterrey Mexico 🇲🇽 regarding current issues affecting both countries. Ss discussed/debated the issues and learn to agree to disagree.

R2: spring cleaning for me is taking and making modifications to content that we have used in the past. Identify those things that are good, & make it even better. Those things that maybe didn’t work well are modified/purged. I always try to plan a year in advance. #INeLearn
Q2: Part of spring cleaning is purging what we’ve been holding on to without purpose. What policies/practices might you clean out in order to make your vision a reality?
#INeLearn
Q3: Are there policies/practices currently in place that could be polished so they better align with your digital learning vision? If so, what are they?
#INeLearn
R3) Many of our courses (online and self-paced) only have interaction between each student and the teacher. Students lose out on opportunity to learn from each other. #INeLearn
Speaking to choice and appropriate use of tools, I'd challenge rethinking the no phone signs. Perhaps revise to focus on the decision. Is this the right time to have your phone out? What task are you focused on? #INeLearn Teach DigCit and sustained attention.
R3: You don’t have to know it all (get really good at a couple things). Expect that Ss know more than you (they don’t). Don’t be afraid to make mistakes (it creates transparency with your SS). #INeLearn
R3: I think we've refined our policies and procedures enough. However, are there some that I could work at more diligently? Absolutely! Like #DigCit and being a bigger champion for it ALL the time and not just when there's a workshop on it. #EdTech#INeLearn

Q2: I believe schools must work with Ss to better teach them responsible use of technology. It is past the time for our acceptable use policies to fall by the wayside. We must better prepare students to be responsible consumers in a digital world.
R3) Many of our courses (online and self-paced) only have interaction between each student and the teacher. Students lose out on opportunity to learn from each other. #INeLearn
R3: Using technology strictly for drilling web tools in younger grades is a idea that needs to be cleaned up. Production should be a goal for all ages.
Sorry, late to the party! #inelearn
Yes! Often times we think online students are collaborating all the time. but the opposite is sometimes true. Online learning can be VERY isolating!! It takes a unique T to be an #OnlineEducator#INeLearn

Hi everyone! Dianna Knox--Technology Instructional Specialist for Clay Community Schools. Sorry I'm late to the party--a late barn night helping deliver a baby calf. 😍#INeLearn
R3: exactly what I was thinking... teaching students when it is appropriate to use is much more effective than banning the tool they are most comfortable using #INeLearn

I was brought in specifically to create a world history course that is self-paced and asynchronous yet allows student collaboration and interaction. #INeLearn
R3) Many of our courses (online and self-paced) only have interaction between each student and the teacher. Students lose out on opportunity to learn from each other. #INeLearn
Couldn’t agree more. It is not about banning devices. We need to teach appropriate use and at appropriate times. With engaging lessons, phones are never an issue. #INeLearn
R3: Continuing to reinforce the message to Ss that they might be "good at technology" but that does not mean they are good at using it to learn. They have so much power with the technology, we need to teach them how to best utilize it Important component of #digcit#inELearn
Technology isn't the problem. Student behavior and (poor) classroom management usually is. Or the lack of knowing how to manage a class with devices. #INeLearn

Q4: What instructional practices do you see/use that align with your digital learning vision? How are you keeping these current and in good working condition?
#INeLearn
Hi everyone! Dianna Knox--Technology Instructional Specialist for Clay Community Schools. Sorry I'm late to the party--a late barn night helping deliver a baby calf. 😍#INeLearn
There is a fine line between allowing Ss flexibility to explore on their own and keeping boundaries so they don’t get off task/do inappropriate things. #INeLearn
So true. Both are skills that can be taught and practiced, but sadly the frustration often gets in the way and the battle continues. (Couldn't find a cleaning metaphor to support this, drats) #INeLearn
R3--o am actively advocating for a major revision on our policy concerning blocked websites. Let's teach our Ss responsible use of the available tools. #INeLearn
It can be easier to stray if modeling is not done correctly. If they're supposed to be gleaning information, show them how. Be clear with expectations and goals. #inelearn
R4 You have to smile at how many #INeLearn folks already slipped this into earlier responses-the focus on giving Ss the opportunity to produce/create. Serves both as exploration of ideas and demonstration of understanding.
@mltolin and @Joanna_Ray11 always say that when we use tech, we don’t teach with tech; we teach. It’s about knowing your pedagogy and developing ways that get the Ss learning most effectively. If tech is it, great. If not, great! #INeLearn

So much of our vision for digital learning encompasses policy, practice, and instruction. It is what we do! Hard to separate it all sometimes! #INeLearn
R4) Have set up my world history course so Ss choose a historical theme or essential question (depending on semester) that speaks to them & use that as their lens through which to view history & work to create their final capstone projects. #INeLearn

R4: Providing choice that leads to innovative learning opportunities. What decisions am I making for them that they could easily make for themselves? Choice leads to empowerment which leads to innovation #ineLearn
#INeLearn
Q4: BSD has an amazing staff that engages our students with a variety of digital tools on a daily basis with an emphasis on the 4 C's. It is commonplace for our staff to voluntarily meet for PD with the purpose of sharing out effective tools.

Q5: Take a fresh look at how you have communicated your classroom’s, school’s, and district’s digital learning vision. Where would you look? What might be updated?
#INeLearn
R4: Providing choice that leads to innovative learning opportunities. What decisions am I making for them that they could easily make for themselves? Choice leads to empowerment which leads to innovation #ineLearn
R5: explaining what happens via @twitter, email, @remind101, etc. How do our stakeholders know what we do? Important to communicate goals and outcomes. Transparency. #INeLearn
That's what I like about organizing content using approaches like HyperDocs. Allow students to poke around, tuck away gems to enrich the learning (Easter eggs), provide a path for those who need/want it #INeLearn
R5) We're encouraging our advisors to ask Ss to share the awesome things they are doing that led them to choose online learning & our school so we can share on social media, our website, etc. #INeLearn
R5: We should look closer at how students are engaged with lesson. Is technology enhancing lesson? If not, we need to change that. Tech provides some strong avenues of engaging more students than ever before. #inelearn
Why shouldn’t knowledge be a two way street. I find days where my kids are most engaged, they teach me a ton. Probably don’t realize what they are doing either. #INeLearn
Transparency is definitely a key. Share the positives through these tools as well, building the strong positive culture of learning happening in your school! #INeLearn
R5: Looking at our schools, I’d like to improve our ability to tell our story better. We (including myself) can blog, use Twitter, attend/present at conferences, etc to share the great things that happen at Delphi. #INelearn
R5: We are working on a unified vision. Right now, our HS teachers have had devices for a few years, and our littles will have them next year. Our goals are becoming more defined each day. #inelearn
R5: when Ss share via YouTube or @Flipgrid the great things they are doing. Create videos to share their knowledge to an authentic audience with @WeVideo. Lots of ways we can share the knowledge with our stakeholders. #INeLearn
R5--This is something we have been working on a lot. Our district hired their first technology coaching position (Me!) & I've been lucky to attend a lot of professional learning opportunities to glean as much knowledge & advice from people I've come to admire a lot. #INeLearn
Q6: Every year, I have good intentions of better managing the photos and videos I produce. Spring cleaning is an opportunity to move things to the Cloud & tag items so you can easily find them in the future. What tools do you use to make this job easier?
#INeLearn
R5: We are using tech not because its cutting edge or bc kids love it. We are using tech bc it opens up a world of new learning opportunities. It really transforms the learning process--UDL, Mastery Learning, Innovation, 4Cs #ineLearn
R5: Can be found on the districts and schools website, blogs, Google Classroom, and social media. We can invite individuals in to see at first hand. #UMedTech#INeLearn
R5: We are working on a unified vision. Right now, our HS teachers have had devices for a few years, and our littles will have them next year. Our goals are becoming more defined each day. #inelearn
R6) I really like Google Drive, Pocket, Diigo, Flipboard, I also keep a GDoc for my courses where I can add reflections, resources, ideas, etc. to keep in mind when revising the courses. #INeLearn
R6: move pics and videos to @YouTube, create them in @WeVideo. Always move to @googledrive. Remember, if you won’t use again or look at again....is it worth keeping? #INeLearn
R6: I usually do a @googledrive and @gmail cleanup. I already have most other items cleaned up and filed away. (Crazy, logical math mindset, I think.) #INeLearn
#INeLearn
Q5: At BSD we began the process of attempting to define our vision for digital learning but ended up establishing a vision overall student learning.
Q7: If you are like me, I hold on to apps and extensions, even though I do not use them anymore! We all have our metaphorical junk drawers. What is yours? How do you and others benefit from you giving it a thorough cleaning?
#INeLearn
#INeLearn
Q6:. Always looking for additional tools. My best advice is to start by storing all photos and videos in the cloud. Very rarely do I not work out of the GSuite.
I am so laughing. I realized last week that I started using Instagram 6 years ago during my sister's wedding because I'd filled up my phone storage and it allowed me to squeeze in a few more photos! TGFG (Thank Goodness for Google) now my pics synch #INeLearn
R6- I'm new to this but I've tried to be very intentional about how I've stored things in my @googledrive & I've created a Google Site with links to all my newsletters, YouTube playlists, & resources I've shared. The amount of content has been overwhelming. #INeLearn
I have had to use a Chrome extension to manage my extensions because I am such an extension junkie. Love those quick clicks to get the job done! #INeLearn
R7: I generally "clean up" the apps on my phone when I run out of space and can't add more. Bummed when many of them are part of the carrier's works & can't remove them. #INeLearn
Q7: If you are like me, I hold on to apps and extensions, even though I do not use them anymore! We all have our metaphorical junk drawers. What is yours? How do you and others benefit from you giving it a thorough cleaning?
#INeLearn
R7: I’m a neat freak. I want things organized and cleaned up. Including my teacher drive and my @googledrive. Must be organized. No disrespect to the 429 untitled documents. I don’t have any because I am obsessive/compulsive like that. #INeLearn
Agreed! There are a few I would love to get rid of but can’t! I actually cleaned up my phone’s apps a few months ago. My kids don’t need preschool apps anymore! #INeLearn
That's what my husband and I thinking--we have dozens of old disks to go through! All I can think is, I'm pretty sure 7/8th of those are my old lesson plans #INeLearn
WU: Clean up any actual handouts and papers you picked up at conferences. Throw away those bags you will never use too. (But keep that water bottle from @iceindiana. Haha!) #INeLearn
