-
Hi all! So excited to be here with and
-
Hi Kate and welcome! Kate is my daughter and an excellent teacher in her own right :-)
-
Hi, I'm here in Fort Yukon. Just checked out the link & Excited to learn about these Letters of the Next President...
-
welcome! It is great to have you here!
-
-
Q1 Look at some letters at https://t.co/nU839Z3gLA. What issues you think the next pres should address about yr community?
-
Tammy Morris, based in Juneau but tweeting from Anchorage tonight :)
-
here in Juneau I think an issue of growing concern is the heroin problem.
-
-
This is something that effects many of our young people and community - directly or indirectly https://t.co/LPN3trCXof
-
-
here in Juneau I think an issue of growing concern is the heroin problem.
-
A1: Completely agree with the growing heroin problem in Juneau
-
I think earl childhood education affects all: having good preschool programs to prepare future elementary students
-
Q2 What content could you align to the letter to the president?
-
A1: Homelessness not as bad in Juneau as some other places, but still needs to be addressed.
-
Very good point! Headstart and funding for early childhood ed is very important! https://t.co/n8AED71S2P
-
-
I think earl childhood education affects all: having good preschool programs to prepare future elementary students
-
I completely agree and this would be an excellent social issue to address with
-
yes - this could be an issue that impacts our ss in a significant way! https://t.co/YIxlm2SSAu
-
-
A1: Homelessness not as bad in Juneau as some other places, but still needs to be addressed.
-
-
What can be done about addiction? Better preventative measures or counseling programs after addiction?
-
-
It's a good question. Prevention is one thing...how does it get here? And then health for ss...
-
teachers I see in Bay Area are working across disciplines - history/English - and using the 4cs to connect the work.
-
I think about English of course when aligning content - but there could be others...Social Studies even geography & cultural stds
-
Q3 What social questions are raised by this content ?
-
I think Writing standards or speaking/listening standards would align great!
-
-
absolutely - and some of the social issues could be silencing of certain populations/assumptions made... https://t.co/p0IGv26Lfy
-
-
I think Writing standards or speaking/listening standards would align great!
-
-
I see a tie in to cultural standards, too...how can we be preserve our cultures - how can prez help... https://t.co/p0IGv26Lfy
-
-
I think Writing standards or speaking/listening standards would align great!
-
Q4 How could this question be relevant to the president?
-
Exactly! Literacy+Civic Engagement w/activities built on these standards is the key.
-
Preventative measures against drug/alcohol addiction need to be a result of intentional relationships.
-
True, students wouldn't have experience with addiction, but would know what its like to be around an addict
-
love the tie in to civic engagement and service learning could be a part of this as well.
-
- exactly! These experience can really resonate with those who can implement strategies within our schools early!
-
-
A2: ELA, of course, but technology - digital citizenship, searching, proper citation, etc.
-
-
A2: Math may be involved in the research to be knowledgeable about the topic.
-
- Yes...and especially if you (as we will discuss) integrate the circuitry...you could have science and tech
-
Q5 How could your students demonstrate their expertise (think background knowledge) in their letter to the president?
-
Yep! All of this. All these skills and contexts create robust and useful learning.
-
I see the as a way to help ss gain a voice...technology to amplify that!
-
Yes, they could conduct data about issues in the community like What % went to preschool?
-
Yes!paper circuitry allows students to est. skills&see the power they have with https://t.co/PqNCaYSNTT
-
-
A2: ELA, of course, but technology - digital citizenship, searching, proper citation, etc.
-
absolutely having data to back up claims would strengthen their arguments! (& meet many standards :-))
-
How are they the experts! Even in https://t.co/VW69ZzxW0w
-
-
Q5 How could your students demonstrate their expertise (think background knowledge) in their letter to the president?
-
That's a perfect example of authentic engagement that supports the development of a strong reflection.
-
not to mention the great experience and efficacy it could grow.
-
We've been talking about the letters to the next president project which is great in its own right: https://t.co/nU839ZkSaa
-
Imagine how these moments could enhance writing and higher level thinking! https://t.co/lhpOBjGAl7
-
-
not to mention the great experience and efficacy it could grow.
-
and any classroom can join this project...
-
Q6 Now transitioning to integrating paper circuitry! What is your favorite story about a student having a lightbulb moment?
-
A5: Wonderful avenue to tell their own story. Our students have important stories to tell.
-
Yes and they are the experts! Maybe even more than the ! How empowering ! https://t.co/F0zdTKE9yq
-
-
A5: Wonderful avenue to tell their own story. Our students have important stories to tell.
-
what I love is that platform that provides for a national conversation. A great showcase tool and content mgmt system.
-
so the ss who are writing these letters can communicate with each other? https://t.co/usfFThW22v
-
-
what I love is that platform that provides for a national conversation. A great showcase tool and content mgmt system.
-
Thanks 4 introducing me to https://t.co/cHGgvA3xSD I'll be sharing that in my village school. Great audience 4 writers!
-
I think they can comment on letters, not sure about full social; there's a one-to-many, teacher-to-student CMS function.
-
Value in sharing stories for the benefit of students. Data is important- but value in the work itself! https://t.co/QCVSalSmjB
-
-
what I love is that platform that provides for a national conversation. A great showcase tool and content mgmt system.
-
Q7 Watch these this vid. What kind of curricula creates opportunities for a lightbulb moment? https://t.co/GTfaVHDYcO
-
Please share the creation of your students! I know my students would love to see their creations! https://t.co/qMoFAsT0CB

There was a tsunami. My students usually brought money for booster club popcorn, but one student said to donate to victims instead
-
A6: My Methods experience. Was helpng 5th grader w division & he GOT it. The light n his face! My1st experience w that! 26yrs ago!
-
I think lightbulb moments happen when we are fully engrossed and engaged in something...
-
when we expect it will turn out and we can do it, but when it does - not the way we expected!
-
Those are amazing moments aren't they! We don't forget them! https://t.co/ggHlp4KHMz
-
-
A6: My Methods experience. Was helpng 5th grader w division & he GOT it. The light n his face! My1st experience w that! 26yrs ago!
-
I share headlines every morning. Even though we are in a small village, its nice to be connected to what else is going on.
-
yes that is important and I would expect sometimes it's hard to help students maintain that interest... https://t.co/xV5eqqTwsW
-
-
I share headlines every morning. Even though we are in a small village, its nice to be connected to what else is going on.
-
Our students are amzing! This story is proof! shows how THEY make the world more awesome https://t.co/Kv8Vwe0qPv

-
- and a question will follow :-) We have a few minutes between to give time to look at the template and video
-
Awesome! Bring the world to our students & help them make the connections.
-
That's an 11x17 printable template, creative commons licensed, downloadable. three folds, six panels, literacy+design
-
civic action such as giving to tsunamic victims helping those less fortunate make such an impact!
-
LOVE the video! PROOF that cellphones aren't distraction in class when students are engaged!!
-
anything can be a distraction if we aren't engaged :-) https://t.co/Z6cz52AjoU
-
-
LOVE the video! PROOF that cellphones aren't distraction in class when students are engaged!!
-
Q10 Paper circuitry and writing is a mashup of skills, materials, literacies. How do your students engage in multi-modal work?
-
I have my students do several different multimodal projects - concept maps, Voicethreads...
-
I don't see this as different from a written project, usually they don't either...more and more they are very familiar w/tools
-
We're taking about of PBL, small group work and differentiation. Easier said than done and so so valulable.
-
We do a lot of science projects. We will go for a walk outside and take pictures about what we did/saw and then write a report
-
Yes! And that our students are the real experts and can explain their learning and share it with others https://t.co/JrF7LauzFW
-
-
LOVE the video! PROOF that cellphones aren't distraction in class when students are engaged!!
-
yes - We do these online and really all that's needed IMHO is a good framework for the project and TIME https://t.co/nmaCJLy1D8
-
-
We're taking about of PBL, small group work and differentiation. Easier said than done and so so valulable.
-
A10 When T facilitates discovery of question & supports Ss as they seek answer, Ss likely to demo answer in multimodal project.
-
this is a great way to engage them and with tools generally very accessible. https://t.co/Iq8bvzJG2V
-
-
We do a lot of science projects. We will go for a walk outside and take pictures about what we did/saw and then write a report
-
When I'm able to backwards plan a unit effectively and introduce the skills, materials, audiences for each step, it goes very well
-
Really an extension of a written product which can create meaningful artifacts and simulations! https://t.co/KyHD9ZwMVQ
-
-
I don't see this as different from a written project, usually they don't either...more and more they are very familiar w/tools
-
I think the TIME that is needed is a real objection for many ... but processing & working through does require it.
-
-
Such a personal touch, which makes learning meaningful for the students! ! https://t.co/SjviutdB7i
-
-
We do a lot of science projects. We will go for a walk outside and take pictures about what we did/saw and then write a report
-
-
That's THE issue often. And it's what allows deep learning to happen.
-
I love my classroom Makerspace. I watch what they do with the materials and integrate content around it.
-
absolutely agreed. We can't rush it. https://t.co/9FuyXX7DcL
-
-
That's THE issue often. And it's what allows deep learning to happen.
-
Q11 What do you observe when critical thinking is accompanied by hands-on work?
-
The ability to self-direct and to be guided by materials and ideas, together, is a powerful combination
-
There is no substitute 4 the time it takes for meaningful lrning. If the time is limited-so is the lrning https://t.co/rEIZ9hVj37
-
-
I think the TIME that is needed is a real objection for many ... but processing & working through does require it.
-
This "extension" provides the means for deeper learning.
-
Learning talk - hearing them process and explain what they are doing & why..document that with kidwatching https://t.co/4aSJoI5GOE
-
-
Q11 What do you observe when critical thinking is accompanied by hands-on work?
-
And what is causing that time crunch?? Nerves abt prepping Ss for standardized tests.
-
yes. And concerns about "covering" content without regard for "uncovering" understanding/misunderstanding https://t.co/sULY2LwHGi
-
-
And what is causing that time crunch?? Nerves abt prepping Ss for standardized tests.
-
When I taught preschool, sometimes our topics lasted weeks because that was what they were interested in!
-
Absolutely- and learning beyond content. Full synthesis of self, content and the world around them. https://t.co/VzC2aqpssh
-
-
This "extension" provides the means for deeper learning.
-
I love that! is a movement that could make that possible at least part of some days!
-
Often an immediate and personal connection to the work and a motivation to think through a presentation more clearly.
-
A11 Engagement, deeper learning, desire to come to school, asking more questions to repeat cycle
-
When they are engaged, they learn more than you would expect. I had preschoolers who loved division & fractions
-
Sometimes maybe is the pressure on tchrs. It is difficult- but like our stdnts we must trust the process https://t.co/cYeaX3w7H5
-
-
And what is causing that time crunch?? Nerves abt prepping Ss for standardized tests.
-
Q12 How do you and your students think of artifacts and final products?
-
I can't say my ss love them but as master's level ss they are used to this being the way they demo learning
-
Certainly! We must believe and follow their natural desire to learn/ explore the world around them https://t.co/jpNJpWEk4d
-
-
When I taught preschool, sometimes our topics lasted weeks because that was what they were interested in!
-
- I try to give an extended time (the whole semester) for big projects and grade the process along the way
-
A12 Depends ... are the artifacts and final products contrived or authentic? https://t.co/Hx81d190Wz
-
-
Q12 How do you and your students think of artifacts and final products?
-
- ah good point! Authentic is always best isn't it! https://t.co/ag6IuMOGRE
-
-
A12 Depends ... are the artifacts and final products contrived or authentic? https://t.co/Hx81d190Wz
-
-
Q12 How do you and your students think of artifacts and final products?
-
Artifacts & final products are things that can be shared... though blogs, twitter, to our classmates or other classes
-
Students commit to the making and the presentation -- be it a story, an essay or crafted project.
-
good point - authentic audiences and peer feedback can be very motivating...and can encourage high quality projects!
-
really excellent question as this alters the turn out greatly! I would say authentic! https://t.co/s7e9TNAi69
-
-
A12 Depends ... are the artifacts and final products contrived or authentic? https://t.co/Hx81d190Wz
-
-
Q12 How do you and your students think of artifacts and final products?
-
the sharing and the idea of audience makes these powerful connections work for kids. Gives them a voice - their voice
-
I think that sometimes we think authentic projects are high stakes and risky? Possible?
-
Especially when they are excited to share it with an appreciative audience. https://t.co/enNzM1DXEH
-
-
Students commit to the making and the presentation -- be it a story, an essay or crafted project.
-
I've had students write a song or do an interpretive dance too! They can be so creative!
-
yes! I tell my stdnts- something that makes the world more positive than how they found it https://t.co/NLh7m0pmXT
-
-
Artifacts & final products are things that can be shared... though blogs, twitter, to our classmates or other classes
-
Agreed, because audience is seen as respectable https://t.co/x1vJCjEUFi
-
-
I think that sometimes we think authentic projects are high stakes and risky? Possible?
-
Legitimizes and celebrates so many things. Sense of mastery is a wonderful reward for a kid in this kind of work.
-
what fun! I think we should take every opportunity to enourage our students to be creative! https://t.co/YV9K7eYR0C
-
-
I've had students write a song or do an interpretive dance too! They can be so creative!
-
-
I think unfortunately this tends to be true- but that moment of disequilibrium is important to the lrning https://t.co/f6VGEw3IsT
-
-
I think that sometimes we think authentic projects are high stakes and risky? Possible?
-
I do think that we have to model taking the risks we ask our ss to take...help them manage the expectations
-
scaffold to the left - to the right - in the middle at the top - on the bottom :-) all around! support!
-
it's kind of like the hokey pokey I guess in that way ;-) https://t.co/ZxVBAUEQPf
-
-
scaffold to the left - to the right - in the middle at the top - on the bottom :-) all around! support!
-
Yep, teachers need 2 have the same experience, same disorientation, same sense of success...walk the walk.
-
But trust that in that support- the process is important. They are capable of more than they know https://t.co/0BQM40rgYi
-
-
scaffold to the left - to the right - in the middle at the top - on the bottom :-) all around! support!
-
-
I think that the supports we are looking at for Q13 are exactly that support - they are scaffolds.
-
Not a lot of exp w paper circuitry here - seems like it takes a lot of time (back to THAT word!) Worth it?
-
yes - very good point - takes time for that trust to develop
-
Exactly !kids should see us troubleshoot at all times and see this as a marker of lrning/ success https://t.co/layw9br7gv
-
-
Yep, teachers need 2 have the same experience, same disorientation, same sense of success...walk the walk.
-
Kate might share her blog on The Frank Effect...she is doing this in Honors English https://t.co/twCMehhwaS
-
-
Not a lot of exp w paper circuitry here - seems like it takes a lot of time (back to THAT word!) Worth it?
-
-
I love that! It makes note-taking more into a map of you processing knowledge. Wish I had that in school!
-
We've seen good interest and pickup. High engagement, direct connection to writing, making, interdsciplinary work.
-
That's why I love coding! It teaches you to keep trying and that you can do something lots of different ways
-
David can you share the link to Nextmap letters to the next president page?
-
-
-
I would say that if you have the backward design and the circuitry is part of the knowledge building 1/2
-
Will B sharing this resource w some students (teachers) I've had who successfully use notebooks n class https://t.co/5Bw5z0dREQ
-
-
then it is definitely worth the time - but needs to be intricately aligned with standards & other activities
-
-
my goodness time flies! Thank you all for joining us this week!
