I'm Kathy - tonight's #educoach moderators. My success stories include starting the school year and catching up with @AlisaSimeral last night #educoach
My first time participating in this chat. I’m an IC at hs in suburbs of Chicago. This weeks victory (our first week back to school) is that 3 veteran teachers have expressed interest in coaching, which has mainly been utilized by 1st and 2nd year teachers. So exciting! #educoach
Let’s get started with tonight’s topic: The last two chapters of Creating a Culture for Reflective Practice by @educationhall and @alisasimeral#educoach
Hi All! Bummed to miss this last chat. Just boarded a plane for home...leaving the great state of IA that’s filled with so many dedicated educators!! #educoach
I'm Kathy - tonight's #educoach moderators. My success stories include starting the school year and catching up with @AlisaSimeral last night #educoach
A1 As I virtually coach instructional coaches and school leaders I help them narrow down their own goals. We then look at the big picture and break it into smaller steps for small wins along the way. #educoach
Q2 How can (or do) you focus on asking open-ended questions and providing prompts that aren't laden with a predisposition toward a "correct" answer or don't lead your teachers to a particular response? #educoach
A1: focusing on a teacher generated capacity building goal can have a magnifying impact on classroom practice compared to incidental or short sighted goals #educoach
A2: This is still something I struggle with and try to improve on. I have to remember that it’s not my goal I’m trying to get them to reach. It’s theirs so I try to question for better understanding on my part and ask their thoughts. #educoach
A2: I can’t underemphasize the importance of preplanning questions based on records of previous convos when prepping to meet with a coachee. Effective coaching, like effective teaching, does not happen by accident #educoach
I agree. Having questions pre-planned is use is beneficial. We do have to remember that we take the path the teacher leads us on. There I times I have to skip preplanned questions. #educoach But they are still always good to have!!
A 3 This is an older document - but I've carried the ideas on data with me as a coach and now a coach to coaches and school leaders. The data part starts on p. 5 https://t.co/FF7Ea3Yytf#educoach
Q4 Once last questions on the book and then we will end with some open ended questions as your start your year.
What were your key takeaways from Creating a Culture for Reflective Practices by @educationhall & @alisasimeral#educoach
A4 I always appreciate going deeper with the continuum. I've heard @educationhall & @AlisaSimeral numerous times - but each new look at reflective practice takes me deeper! #educoach
If you have specific questions for @educationhall & @alisasimeral - I bet they will respond if you mention them in your tweet. Both are very active on Twitter! #educoach
Q5 Some of you have already started your new school years, while others are in the planning stages. As instructional coaches and school leaders it is important to understand your WHY. What is your WHY for doing what you do? #educoach
A5: why: I believe high quality teaching doesn’t happen by accident and coaching allows a teacher to slow down the teaching practice, making meaningful and strategic choices/changes in the classroom #educoach
A5 My why is about serving others. I've been fortunate to learn from many, receive coaching myself, had other see things in me I didn't see myself. Now I'm paying it forward w/ the teacher leaders I work with, the coaches&school leaders I virtually coach& all the #educoach peeps.
A5: When I was a BRAND NEW T an IC helped me through a struggle in my classroom and made a world of difference. Since that day, I wanted to be an IC and also be helpful to teachers when they struggle. Ts need a partner to help themselves improve. #educoach
Q6 We will have chats in the future about starting up your year - but what questions do you have right now for each other … or to use @boxofcrayons questions What’s on your min...about coaching? #educoach
A6: 1) to what extent should an IC orient coaching of an individual teacher toward school-established goals? 2) when is the IC relationship is over w/ a teacher? 3) how can a IC be successful in a context where school leaders don’t advocate publicly the IC’s role? #educoach
Sharing our why requires vulnerability, yet through sharing our beliefs, we are able to continue to foster trusting and meaningful relationships which leads to meaningful and impactful coaching opportunities. #educoach
Perhaps teachers could build their own WHY and then you share yours. Have you seen this https://t.co/DwIZJ3hn3H
Or another thought - build your WHY together as a staff and think about how that includes coaching and reflection? #educoach
The beginning of the year is a busy time. We thank you for spending a hour with #educoach. Just a reminder - use the hashtag any time. There is always someone following the tweets and ready the help you out on your coaching journey. #educoach
We spent time sharing our individual why, then established our collective why in collaborative teams, which forms our beliefs within a professional learning community. It’s been powerful! #educoach
A special thanks to @educationhall and @AlisaSimeral for their words of wisdom and passion for building teachers capacity for success! It has been a joy to discuss their book here. #btcfs#educoach
