#worldgeochat is a weekly chat focused on teaching geography and global studies. Chats vary between geography specific topics as well as general teaching and education topics. ALL are welcome in worldgeochat!
Welcome to #worldgeochat! Tonight we are talking about increasing student engagement. Please take a second to tell us who you are and where you are from.
#worldgeochat
Ed, 7th grade world geography teacher in the suburbs of Chicago. I’m always on the lookout for new ways to increase student engagement! The questions for tonight’s chat can be found here: https://t.co/gJY7wurP9c#worldgeochat
#worldgeochat have a great chat tonight will be checking in - Student engagement so important don't be afraid to engage - nothing greater than Ss excited about coming to school / class!
Hi #worldgeochat I'm Penny from Virginia. I teach World Geo and APHG and I've missed Tuesday night chats since about September. Sorry! (insert sheepish grin here)
Seems like with the temperature above freezing up here in Maine, my interwebs are all messed up. Pete here for #worldgeochat (hopefully staying online)
A1 I know the past 2 years that the 1st Fantasy Geopolitics draft day has been very exciting for both my students and me. #fanofschool@playfanschool#worldgeochat
A1 Any lesson that gets Ss asking questions, researching, creating, moving, or critically thinking! I especially enjoy collaborative mapping activities! #worldgeochat
A1: This year, I introduced a dystopian simulation to introduce standard of living. Had the face masks ready, room decorated with caution tape, and a loud alarm going off #worldgeochat
A1: Crazy you ask... TODAY. History and culture of France. So fun. I CRUSH French stereotypes with first-hand accounts of my visits to France. Kids love a good story! #worldgeochat
A1 I love many but my faves are using Lord of the Rings to teach industrial impacts on the landscape and reading The Worst Mistake of Mankind when introducing agricultural practices #worldgeochat
A1 collaborative presentations using Google suite. Use a lot with world geography. Today my history class did an artifact study in class on native American history that was tons of fun. #worldgeochat
A1 Stake Your Claim (scramble for Africa game), learning the #Haka cultural Fair, amazon land use debate, And the zombie apocalypse of course #worldgeochat
A1 Progressive Era Press Conf, Pitch your platform Federalists vs. Anti-Federalists, interactive timelines, 4 corners, barometer, simulations I miss the classroom :( #worldgeochat
A1: This year, I introduced a dystopian simulation to introduce standard of living. Had the face masks ready, room decorated with caution tape, and a loud alarm going off #worldgeochat
A1
This year is hard because so many of those lessons aren't getting taught. I loved teaching Africa and Apartheid thru song. I loved having Ss go deeper into Arab-Israeli Conflict. #worldgeochat
My classes are gamified, so any lesson can be more engaging than if I didn't gamify! I love playing spur-of-the-moment review games with them. #worldgeochat#gamification
A1: I'm in my first year of Geography, but my kids LOVED playing Battleship with latitude and longitude! Simple to do, and anything that gamifies is a winner to me! #worldgeochat
A1 #worldgeochat Time has passed me by but my favs were:
The Grid
Oral Storytelling of Beowulf (to teach migration and language evolution)
Berlin Conference fantasy draft
love it!! #LOTR can be used for many lessons :) #worldgeochat so can #StarWars.... I use the Ewoks vs Empire when I chat about developed and developing worlds
A1 Back teaching after a 9 yr break, so don't have many tried-and-true lessons. Ss loved Build-a-Nation. They had to create a nation using the Geo ideas we learned in the intro unit. #worldgeochat
I was just watching continental drift animations from about 300 million years ago to about 300 million years from now. My guess is that whatever world maps kids draw will be true for some past or future geologic period. #worldgeochat
A2: I use something I call "Awesome Talk." We all take turns sharing awesomeness for 5 minutes. Sometimes we cry, we're laughing so friggin' hard. 😂 Happy kids learn better. Simple as that. #worldgeochat
A2: Quizizz is great for a quick game to activate prior knowledge! Been a big fan of pictures, silly memes, and anything that gets them talking! Sometimes, we keep it simple and ask how they are - that's important too #worldgeochat
A2 I like posting #WouldYouRather questions in #googleclassroom that are just relevant enough. Everyone can give an answer, they lighten the mood, and get people curious. #worldgeochat
A2 #worldgeochat
Having a wireless mic, I could stand in the hallway and tell the kid who was always out of his seat to sit down... got them every time
A2
PICTURES!
I spent close to 25 minutes on a picture on the Morocco-Spain border - No, I didn't know that they had a border either, but you learn something new! #worldgeochat
A2: I'll be completely honest, hooks have been lost for me this year in terms of warm-ups, etc. BUT I'm using Aladdin's Arabian Nights on Thursday to introduce stereotyping #worldgeochat
A2 Just finished reading #TLAP and it was affirming to see some of my regular hooks mentioned in the class. I love a good Shock and Awe hook that pulls everyone right in! #worldgeochat
A2 Ss love when we do simulations. Ss have claimed furniture like explorers, acted out diff economies, etc. I esp love to do simulations at beginning of lessons bc they don't realize they're learning until the end of the activity #worldgeochat
A2: I love just discussing current events - it get Ss so involved in the world around them. Then, also pictures rock, along with quotes, etc. #worldgeochat
A2 it varied images, political cartoons, music, take a stand statement (resulting in barometer / 4 corners activity) but really just standing at the door hollering names & yelling woot! #worldgeochat
A2: Some of my favorite hooks are visuals projected like a neat map or a picture of a place for kids to make sense of but other times I like to start class with "what if" and I set up whatever class scenario I need for our unit. #worldgeochat
A2: Showed the population density of Kuwait today, and how most of the 4 million people are practically crammed into one area of the country. That definitely got some jaws dropping #worldgeochat
A2
PICTURES!

Oooohhhhh I get all kinds of geo geeked about Material World and Hungry Planet Posters, so do my students. So many things you can do with those map sets. #worldgeochat
A3
The hook is great, but if you can't deliver a great lesson after, you lose credibility. It's why I think we need to do more #PBL to make things real for Ss! #worldgeochat
A3: With my dystopian scenario, I included "Danger Breaks" which were essentially movement breaks. But we had a volcano eruption (students had to sit on tables and I walked around with "Lava Boots"), Great Migration, and finding the "air leak" #worldgeochat
A2 been talking zombie apocalypse with some people so I guess the big hook I use is freaking out if they’ve heard the news that Nashville experienced a zombie-like infection, complete with fake tweets from Trump #worldgeochat
A3: Positivity first! All participation is valued and important! We played a game on WW2 today and I stressed to the kids that we need to cheer each other on - the empathy, positivity, and sense of community was awesome! #worldgeochat
A3 keep momentum, teach the big picture but facilitate the leaning by providing a variety of supplemental material. Give kids choices of how they will show what they've leaned. #worldgeochat
This one was fun.
https://t.co/WicOAZFmSY
We did a great study on child labor in DRC, but I don't think I blogged about it yet. Need to change that!
#worldgeochat
A2. I use many @NatGeo pictures of the day and have it on smart board as students walk in. Kids need to discuss how photo relates to our topic of study. It starts out as “what/where is this “ and goes from there. #worldgeochat
A3 can’t break character, need full buy in from yourself to keep that energy flowing. I lie about zombies even after the unit is over. I’ve caught myself feeling bogged down more when I get out of that mindset, so you gotta stay in it #worldgeochat
A3 be honest with kids, if you have a reading heavy day, let them know that although it may not be super exciting, is necessary to help understand big picture. #worldgeochat
Though They can be interested in lessons even if we're not. It's the first time they've been through it. Granted, it does need to pique their curiosity #worldgeochat
A4: I try and give students choice on the materials they use, the tools they use, as well as how they are going to share what they learned. I also try and let them have the choice to work on assignments individually, in pairs, or small groups. #worldgeochat
A4: Projects help with this. While covering India, I let students design a board game. Must center around aspects of Indian culture and must be 100% playable. I say GO and they're off! #worldgeochat
Student talk is so important for building understanding. This has been one of the biggest shifts for me since I started teaching 11 years ago. I used to do all the talking, now my goal is to do as little as possible. #worldgeochat
A3: Having a great lesson helps a lot, especially if it's fun. I like to play games or if I am doing a simulation already it is a game, like my trade simulations in my Econ. unit. #worldgeochat
A4 the journey to gameification has made it more and more student centered. Scoreboards, moving through levels and ranks by gaining XP and achievement points, all dependent on what they input to the game #worldgeochat
A4
Stop thinking about what *YOU* are doing during the lesson. Think about what your *STUDENTS* are doing. They need to be moving, discovering, and producing. Not sitting and listening.
#worldgeochat
A4 every unit I've taught had a problem or inquiry collaborative project that included a lot of choice, especially when it came to final product/presentation etc. #worldgeochat
A4: For me, I want to keep it centered on wonder. These kids may never see the places we visit in class. Any time I can connect them to a virtual tour, a person who has been there, or something of that nature I'm in. #worldgeochat
A4
I've been trying to move things around in the classroom more to get them up and out of their seats. Partner walk and talks. It's hard though if you don't want to disrupt others. #worldgeochat
A4: I try and give students choice on the materials they use, the tools they use, as well as how they are going to share what they learned. I also try and let them have the choice to work on assignments individually, in pairs, or small groups. #worldgeochat
Q4 Well .. the most reliable ways we have to respond to engagement are feedback and website use. So, use the website https://t.co/7uvudhvhzy. And let us know what you think at education at ngs dot org. #worldgeochat
I'm struggling with #hyperdocs. I'll get them eventually. @classcraftgame has quests, which are similar to #hyperdocs, but the good thing is they need to get my green light before moving to next activity #worldgeochat
A4 Make them inquiry-oriented. Having Ss look at a compelling Q w/ supporting Q. Great Inquiry Design Model Template here. https://t.co/gwSnssVwyn#worldgeochat
A5: Twitter, podcasts, blogs... there are so many out there. Especially #xplap and @mrmatera's youtube channel have amazing inspiration for engaging students! #worldgeochat
A5: The books "Teach Like a Pirate," "Play Like a Pirate," and "Explore Like a Pirate." These are great resources to look into and find great hooks, lessons, etc. #worldgeochat
A5: This is going to sound strange but hear me out... Kids LOVE true stories of gore, drama, heartbreak, evil, etc. ESPECIALLY if there is a happy ending. History is full of such stories. Find the stories, you find great lessons. #worldgeochat
A5: The books "Teach Like a Pirate," "Play Like a Pirate," and "Explore Like a Pirate." These are great resources to look into and find great hooks, lessons, etc. #worldgeochat
A2 For Geo, I like having Ss draw their mental map of world then c/c w/ other Ss to see other perspectives then follow that up w/ showing mult perspectives of maps. Like these 2 #worldgeochat
I've been really enjoying 10 Minute Teacher Show with @coolcatteacher - not everything applies, but some episodes I find myself nodding my head in agreement the whole time! #worldgeochat
Hey #worldgeochat! Just getting in... Long day... Hoping to catch up on a great conversation tonight! Louie from Lancaster, PA. Middle School Social Studies T.
That in essence is what I did with Tough Choices, except that kids got to be involved in creating the endings. Loads of engagement. https://t.co/JcsA3wMV6I#worldgeochat
@outofedenwalk is a pretty great way to explore perspectives, introduce culture/customs, and consider the world (Big and small) that we live in. #worldgeochat@OutofEdenLearn
A5 Following educators from all over the world on @Twitter has been a game changer for me. I literally can learn or see something new every day that sparks my next hair-brained idea. #worldgeochat
A5 Seeing @burgessdave was a big deal because I felt a little like an outsider early on, like I was trying to do things too chaotic for the sake of “engagement” and it was like an affirmation #worldgeochat
Honestly, I think the best thing that @NPR has released is @HowIBuiltThis - it's the ultimate podcast on learning from failures. It's such a great reminder that failing can be a good thing! #worldgeochat
A1. I've started to use lots of simulations peppered throughout my courses. Brings it all to life! So engaging for Ss and MYSELF!! Recently did Oklahoma Land Rush Sim, then also Assembly Line last week. :)
A4. When you give kids voice and choice to drive their growth, you have to be able to allow a certain amount of trust as well - choice + voice + trust = student growth #risdchat
A4: In planning, I try to keep my "talking time" to 10 mins or less, so then we can do something active and debrief. I also ask my students what they want to learn and follow up half way through our unit to see what they still want to know. #worldgeochat
A6 I like exit slips. I think I am going to shift the synthesis cards to wrap up as well. (right now, they create them for use on quizzes) #worldgeochat
A6: Just found my emoji exit ticket from last year today - asked the kids to describe how they felt about the assignment using an emoji! Great way for them to be secretly truthful! #worldgeochat
A6 I like stories about something wildly interesting/random
I like 3-2-1 three things learned 2 questions and 1 opinion or a doodle.
Fun to project on padlet.
#worldgeochat
A6 Glad this question was asked because I need more ideas. I've been a big fan of artistic products, but I'd like to get more ideas for quick hitting, learning focused activities. #worldgeochat
A6 I have #flipgridfever for lesson closures right now. There’s just something about students independently being able to give me verbal answers in one nice space! #worldgeochat
Going to the AP Human Geo reading and getting to spend time with awesome APHG teachers was my game-changer -- I'll put our Prof Dev Round Table night up against any other PD anywhere #worldgeochat
Do more with less? Let Ss figure out product, goals, and outcomes? Let them propose how they're going to meet standards and then give evidence? #worldgeochat Think 6 word story kind of lesson?
I've been trying to clarify how #CulturesofThinking shifts schools while integrating CoT w powerful ideas of passion & empowerment advocated by likes of Bill Damon, @spencerideas, @gcouros et al. This graphic is my attempt. Let me know what you think and if you find this useful.
Summary of Q6: A lot of teachers struggling with this, which shows us we aren't alone. We've seen some examples of in depth exit tickets, like Google Doodle, or quick hits like a 3, 2, 1 or an emoji exit ticket #worldgeochat
Going to the AP Human Geo reading and getting to spend time with awesome APHG teachers was my game-changer -- I'll put our Prof Dev Round Table night up against any other PD anywhere #worldgeochat
I just watched @mrmatera at #ditchsummit and was so inspired to #gamify! Not a this year thing, but definitely next year! Going to read #xplap too! I'm excited to add this extra engagement layer in the classroom! #worldgeochat

@SamMandeville, @MsWolterSS, @mrmatera
Man! You're the bomb, Mr. Casey! Takes time to get my bearings straight in between classes! Try to be with kids in hallway too. I played music around Christmas, and kids loved it! NOt connected to lesson, though. #worldgeochat
His resources are incredible. I suggest gamifying at least one unit this year to try it out. You don't have to wait until next year! You'll be hooked! #worldgeochat

A7: Gahh, tough question for tomorrow because they're taking a district assessment. BUT their looking at Disney lyrics, creating a collage of stereotypes, and examining MLK Jr's "I Have a Dream Speech." #worldgeochat
A7: Finishing a trivia game on WW2. For motivation, they are playing for a five minute in-class break. They have to vote on the day when the time comes! Wanted to do less bonus points and more opportunities #worldgeochat
Do you have learners make maps? Do they ever map things like the inside of their toy? 😉 or map a birthday cake? I wonder what connections they might make between a map like that and one of the World/their community? #weird#worldgeochat
A7 Well, if I were still an active teacher in a Geography classroom, I might ask kids to find a "Geography in the News" story that has some direct effect on their lives today. #worldgeochat
A7 - Oh COME ON! I'm out tomorrow! I have curriculum writing so my AP Ss will be doing a hyperdoc lesson on religious conflict and my US Ss will be writing their finals essay. #worldgeochat#badtiming
Memes! Yes! Kids need to see our sense of humor! #worldgeochat
I had a great history of memes conversation with Ss last week. Couldn't fathom that memes have been around longer than they had been using them!
A5: I feel kinda lame with this answer but I use the internet and #worldgeochat. I seriously got the idea to read Teach Like a Pirate from here. So you are my inspiration. I also try to do things that I would consider fun. If I can draw- it's a good day! #worldgeochat
Despite all the Tweetdeck and Twitter glitches, we've made it to the end of a great #worldgeochat!
2 claps for @ecasey77 for leading us through a great chat tonight!
And now I’m wondering if you use routines to share the thinking about maps? #worldgeochat what about a map of how we get our food and the 3 y’s routine?
Thank you all so much for joining us tonight! I know I learned a ton and I can way to use these new resources and strategies with my students! Thank you all for sharing!
#worldgeochat
A7 we are currently playing “Sugar Rush” where they learn the pitfalls of a single crop economy as well as supply and demand principles and the “buy low sell high” mantra while trying to amass a sugarcane empire and make more money than their classmates #worldgeochat
Don't forget to join #sschat for a special Thursday night discussion with @CivicYouth, @thelamp, & the Civic Engagement Research Group on activating and supporting #studentvoice in the classroom! #worldgeochat
I haven't used this one too much! I've used Quizlet Live and Kahoot (rarely)... What do you enjoy about Quizziz that you can't get from the others? #worldgeochat
