Good morning, #HackLearning! Lauren from New York – currently on leave from teaching 6th grade English to write another book. This one is about incorporating students’ own values into every stage of an academic unit.
Good morning ... back in Tampa after spending 3 days in Cleveland 😎 ... Sylvia, Writing Coach @BrandonHSEagles next year .. moderator of #HackLearning slow chat ... a continuation of today’s chat ... hope you all will join us! ☺️
Whoa, did you say Hacking Engagement and Hacking Engagement Again author @jamessturtevant is moderating today's live #HackLearning chat?
And it's happening right this very second? Wait for me!
A1 When teachers present, students can collaboratively:
• generate QUESTIONS: What do we wonder about this?
• tell STORIES: Where have we seen this?
• invent APPLICATIONS: How would we use this?
• connect to their VALUES: How can we make this matter?
#HackLearning
A1 Google slides has a Q & A mode that allows audience to type questions that the presenter sees. This is a nice entry-level way for all teachers to begin. #HackLearning
A1: When it comes to collaboration, THINK BROADER than just projects. Students can collaborate in short bursts...like wrestling with a dilemma prompt #HackLearning
A1: Giving students the language to engage in productive collaborative conversations is a way to support their speaking and listening skills. Encourage accountable talk - even if it seems hokey at first. #HackLearning
A1 To decrease to amount of teacher-centered presentations, use @RightQuestion Institute, this technique flips the focus to students & their natural curiosity & collaboration #HackLearning
A1: I have seen cloud tools like @Google docs or collaborative sheets, or one I thought was awesome, using @padlet to document topics, and then use the stickies below the topic for notes. #hacklearning
A1 TPTs (Total Participation Techniques by the Himelle’s sp?) - a non-tech tool with pinch cards; Nearpod - activities, polls, and responses ... #HackLearning
Social media! The greatest tool we have for global collaborations being ignored due to “feelings”. I say, let’s teach our kids how to effectively use sm and apply it as a tool connect them with people they Wild otherwise never meet. #hacklearning
A1: Nothing better than @PearDeck when it comes to getting students to interact and collaborate with teacher presentations! Has totally enhanced the 1:1 environment #hacklearning
Really like the idea of using collaborative tools to generate questions -- and then providing the opportunities to pursue answers to those questions. #HackLearning
A1 When teachers present, students can collaboratively:

• invent APPLICATIONS: How would we use this?
• connect to their VALUES: How can we make this matter?
#HackLearning
A1 Students could present learning during a staff meeting to staff as a part of teacher presentations. My students were asked to do that, they were nervous so they presented in Flipgrid and I played their presentations #HackLearning
A1: Ask them.... "What can support your collaboration" most often they have tolls or "tricks" they can use and if you know them you can support the use of them #hacklearning
A1 @Flipgrid & @BookCreatorApp are great choices, but there are many other asynchronous options to allow for Ss flexibility. Don't have to choose complex, & cutting edge; tried & true can be super effective...think Google Docs. #hacklearning
A1: In the midst of your presentation, stop, prompt your students, and then invite them into the Agora to collaborate! #HackLearninghttps://t.co/1uBYFaMAhS
A1. As teachers are presenting instructional content students can have a back channel using @TodaysMeet , @padlet, or the like to post questions, connections, ideas, etc. This could also help with checking for understanding throughout the lesson. #HackLearning
A1: Love this question. Tell them in advance what the presentation entails and what the goal is. Make it a short presentation. Lots of big paper and colorful pens/markers. Or have them live tweet responses 👍🏼 did this a few times with success. #HackLearning
Presentation wise, I’d have my kids record me (a mini-lesson, if you will) and post online. We could use flipgrid (or more Public sm) to respond with questions, summaries, or whatever task assigned #hacklearning
Great! Looking forward to recovering from a fast-paced but learning filled 10 days! Went to #ILA18 then home for #BLC18 and then #HeinemannTeacherTour yesterday! Need to process all the learning! #HackLearning
I guess I am out of the loop here as I don't do very many teacher presentations unless they are mandated by district (yes we have like 4 required lessons the district provides powerpoints for) i am an activity driven learning environment #hacklearning
A1: Presentation has been deemphasized...BUT SOMETIMES YOU NEED TO BE THE SAGE ON STAGE We just need to include student participation and collaboration into our presentations #HackLearninghttps://t.co/ap1282rcyy
A1: Giving students the language to engage in productive collaborative conversations is a way to support their speaking and listening skills. Encourage accountable talk - even if it seems hokey at first. #HackLearning
The flexibility of GoogleDocs is awesome ... a teacher can start a doc and share it with the class ... BOOM ... instant back channel that is already connected to Google Classroom. #hacklearning

@JMitchellELA, @Flipgrid, @BookCreatorApp
A1: Gamify the on the spot assessment process - @plickers@gimkit@GetKahoot can all give teachers opportunitites to assess learning while activelyengaging students #hacklearning
It's not hokey - accountable talk is the best. Great post. The goal for me isn't for them to use these exact phrases but to learn how to interject and how to feel comfortable disagreeing. #HackLearning
A1: Giving students the language to engage in productive collaborative conversations is a way to support their speaking and listening skills. Encourage accountable talk - even if it seems hokey at first. #HackLearning
A1b: Love this quick way to "Think Better" with collaborative notes from Harvard Graduate School For Education...1 minute video.... https://t.co/T8eETRvJ4T#hacklearning
A1: Love this question. Tell them in advance what the presentation entails and what the goal is. Make it a short presentation. Lots of big paper and colorful pens/markers. Or have them live tweet responses 👍🏼 did this a few times with success. #HackLearning
A1: I used a lot of buddy talks (shoulder partners, Conga Line, Inside/Outside Circles) with my kindergarten students. These talks gave students opportunities to share and build upon their prior learning. #HackLearning
A2: @Mr_Brilla has students collaborate to create presentations which consist of digital story maps via a magnificent free platform called @knightlab#HackLearning
A2: Job 1 is to ensure that students are given guidelines in crafting engaging presentations. They desperately need help in this dept. THE 15-WORD GAUNTLET is essential! https://t.co/F7hMILgcSQ#hacklearning
A1: student collab DURING a presentation!? Sounds like an impossible task. I would prob front load the presentation - share expectations for learning - & remind kids to jot down questions and notes for a subsequent collaborative, application-based task. Gsuite! #hacklearning
As someone in the audience of a presentation, I love when presenters use this. It can lead to many more Qs from ‘quiet’ people and can generate more thinking. I love it! #HackLearning
So many great tools already shared ... how might you use these in your planning and teaching ... thoughts for #HackLearning slow chat ... Q1 on Monday 7:30 AM EST
A2: Teaching students to pose thoughtful questions that clarify, respectfully challenge assumptions and make connections brings a sedentary audience to be more actively involved. #HackLearning
A2: Student Presentation Day sometimes means that non-presenters simply check out. If you stage 27 STUDENT PRESENTATIONS IN 9 MINUTES. Non-presenter collaboration is essential! https://t.co/nRC9Vbqlmk#hacklearning
A1: Provide opportunities for students to pair up and talk. Having them think and then process with another can deepen their understanding. #HackLearning
A2: Having a peer support the backchannel and help facilitate it creates unique opportunities for learning; and can demonstrate how a T is comfortable with immediate feedback to improve a lesson #HackLearning
A2: All starts in planning. When T's plan peer collaboration and build learning outcomes around it - it becomes the culture of your learning environment. Then step back and let the students shine. They will have great ideas when given the chance #hacklearning
A2: Job 1 is to ensure that students are given guidelines in crafting engaging presentations. They desperately need help in this dept. THE 15-WORD GAUNTLET is essential! https://t.co/F7hMILgcSQ#hacklearning
A2 Student “presentations” don’t have to be lectures. We can teach students to be workshop leaders, holding them accountable to same standards that we would hold ourselves as leaders of PD. #HackLearning
A2- As ss lead presentations have other ss share feedback. SS can use Google Q&A or @flipgrid to get peers to collaborate in their presentation.
https://t.co/1KQElhPvcp#hacklearning
A2: Days and days of one student presenting to the entire class at a time if B-O-R-I-N-G. Try gallery walks or other process that still gives students a peer audience, but invites interaction and collaborative learning too. #HackLearning
A2: Student presenters should frequently solicit feedback from peers. Non-presenters should be active participants. Student presenters can utilize the same collaborative tools as teachers such as @PearDeck#hacklearning
A1 For some students, I would prepare ahead of time and provide a short outline for them to check off and add notes to. This was especially helpful in my full inclusion classes #hacklearning
A2 As tchrs, we must model the model ... we can’t expect Ss to include interactions in their presentations of we are not including them in ours. ☺️ #HackLearning
A1: Presentation has been deemphasized...BUT SOMETIMES YOU NEED TO BE THE SAGE ON STAGE We just need to include student participation and collaboration into our presentations #HackLearninghttps://t.co/ap1282rcyy
I am SO with you on this one @kchatbio! Safe, respectful, and productive social media use must be modeled and practiced before students are using it on their own. #HackLearning
Social media! The greatest tool we have for global collaborations being ignored due to “feelings”. I say, let’s teach our kids how to effectively use sm and apply it as a tool connect them with people they Wild otherwise never meet. #hacklearning
A2 #HyperDocs allow unlimited ways for Ss to embed information for collaboration options into their presentations. Templates make them user friendly. So much better than just inserting a link. #hacklearning
A2: Include collaboration as part of the expectations and feedback. Be intentional, have them reflect, and give specific feedback to students. After a couple opportunities, feedback should be about growth, not just mastery of their collaboration skills. #HackLearning
A2: Group work with minimal teacher constraints works best for me. I love to assign my kids a task and allow them to share out/present any way they choose. The creative juices get to flowing and they come up with amazing things. It’s not always perfect but it is fun #hacklearning
If the purpose of student presentations is to practice speaking and listening skills, then the audience can offer feedback on these critical skills. #HackLearning
A2: I think students could also use the buddy talks I mentioned in A1 as a way to included peer collaboration during student conversation. #HackLearning
Student-led discussion groups epitomize student-centered, collaborative learning in all content areas, and when infused with technology, the learning experience is transformed!
#HackLearning
My resources are here:
https://t.co/77htWP0XHv
A2: One time I had kids spend 3 days preparing a lesson to deliver to the class (I chose topic). They had to co-teach. They wrote LPs, made assignments, delivered lesson, graded assignments, etc. When they struggled, other co-teaching pairs helped them. #HackLearning
A2: Leverage digital tools - have students present digitally - posting on online portfolios or social media - and elicit feedback from peers! #hacklearning
A2: I would venture to say the same tools we use for Ss can be used by Ss if Ts are their audience. I’m going to definitely look into the backchannel chat program! #hacklearning
Good point ... that prepositional word can create different perspectives.... I like throughout better than during because it suggests that interaction is a part of your classroom DNA ... connect it to learning targets will increase retention of information #HackLearning
Or have students use their skills to reach beyond the walls of the classroom and record/post or stream the presentations for a larger audience. Promote to local community. #HackLearning
A2: Days and days of one student presenting to the entire class at a time if B-O-R-I-N-G. Try gallery walks or other process that still gives students a peer audience, but invites interaction and collaborative learning too. #HackLearning
I bet a lot of party dances could be used this way! Conga Line is something I learned from my SIOP training. It was a fun way to mix collaboration with a quick brain break! We always just sang the song, but real Conga Line music could be played. #HackLearning
A2) Have the teacher lead the backroom chat while Ss are presenting. This will also ensure that the goals of the lesson are met even if the Ss miss the mark. #hacklearning
What if a group of Ss planned for digital engagement and face to face engagement to happen at the same time: S teaching, a different S facilitating back channel discussions, a third S integrating the two? We’d be Three Dimensional in our learning #3Dleads#hacklearning
Love this strategy! #HackLearning and as a lover of @Postit notes, I would have sts respond in the post-it then share & synthesize their group answer ☺️ #HackLearning
A2: Days and days of one student presenting to the entire class at a time if B-O-R-I-N-G. Try gallery walks or other process that still gives students a peer audience, but invites interaction and collaborative learning too. #HackLearning
Something to think about: Student collaboration DURING direct instruction can drag out a lesson and even distract/confuse the standard being taught. Instead, keep it explicit and short (under 10 min). THEN students are ready to collaborate/apply. #HackLearning
A2) Student presentations should have opportunities built into them that allow for students to think-pair-share and to complete other collaborative learning activities in meaningful places. #HackLearning
A3: Sometimes, teachers must LUBRICATE COLLABORATION through strategic questioning, but their efforts should be stealth and brief! https://t.co/GEQLPSraMl#HackLearning
A3 I always use #gsuiteedu as my default. There are so many ways to use G Classroom for discussions, one thing that I would love to improve is face-to-face interactions #HackLearning
Great point. When I think about teacher presentations, my goal is always to keep them short & sweet. I'm okay changing it up at times, but mostly, I don't want them to drag! #hacklearning
I've wondered about this. I've never used a backchannel chat for this reason and can see my students quickly falling down a rabbit hole.... Am I wrong? #hacklearning
Student collaboration doesn't mean teacher sits back and hopes they learn. The hard work happens in planning. Choosing protocols that help Ss to have productive talk where all group members are accountable for thinking & learning. With intentional planning-MAGIC! #HackLearning
A3 Here’s a tool students can use before any collaborative experience to help them enact their own values as part of the group. It comes from EMPOWER Your Students: https://t.co/gJkpGucobu#HackLearning
When they realized how hard it was the manage a class, they really held each other accountable when someone else was presenting and called each other out for off-task behavior (2/2) #HackLearning
A3 I like the idea of “wingmen” or per coaches ... supporting each other ... I also saw a tchr use Evidence Tracker, Student Voice Tracker, Big Idea Tracker as whole group leaders to ensure that the conversation is moving along (Teaching Channel) #HackLearning
Q3: What tactics and tools can be used to support ALL students to collaborate in structures like Socratic seminars, class discussions, and debriefing sessions?
A3: use time to teach the process and metacognitively model how these structures work instead of communicating directions one way and being disappointed when the collab goes off the rails #hacklearning
(2/2) ...1) I sort them into categories according to common themes & ask students to discover the themes (then share & defend their answers)
2) Students sort into no more than 5 themes (then share & defend their answers)
#hacklearning
Having someone navigate the backchannel (a teachers aid or a student you assign as responsible) can help mitigate the issue. You have to be intentional. I’ve served as a back channel moderator while a lesson was being taught - deepened the learning. #hacklearning
A3 I use Flipgrid for Reflections. We also use Seesaw to complete Two Stars and a Wish for feedback. I use it and the students use it to give feedback to each other. #HackLearning
I couldn't agree more! The book Thanks for the Feedback is a great read intended for adults but could easily be shared with and taught to our Ss. #hacklearninghttps://t.co/DEPsI4zqRK
Wow ... so much to consider for #HackLearning slow chat ... I hope you will reflect on your learning today and join us as we extend the conversation into application as we grow together — Q1 Monday 7:30 AM EST & Q2 Thursday 7:30 AM EST
Part of the issue is that there is often the culture of the work one turns in being the final work without opportunities to learn and improve. #HackLearning
A3: 1. Proper training and modeling of EVERYTHING 2. An openness to admit you are learning as well. 3. The WHOLE INTERNET- seriously, just use it. There are so many companies creating great things for edtech. OR you could facilitate students creating their own #hacklearning
Imagine that, the people that want to abolish ICE, the main agency that breaks up sex trafficking rings, are pedophiles! You can’t make this stuff up.
#Pizzagate#QAnon#Pedogate
A3: I have my ELLs prepare talking points (and rehearse them aloud) before a Socratic seminar. I also have them practice the accountable talk protocol aloud, and I have them hold onto a bilingual cheat sheet #HackLearning
Q3: What tactics and tools can be used to support ALL students to collaborate in structures like Socratic seminars, class discussions, and debriefing sessions?
A3: Thinking outside the box could mean outside of the space time defined by the 4 walls of your room and your class time period. How about enticing students 2 collaborate via a social media platform? #HackLearninghttps://t.co/xJ5b2iuIaA
Honestly, given the drive to monetize education, I’m surprised schools offering webinars from their students hasn’t already happened yet. #sorryformycynicism#hacklearning

A3 I use Flipgrid for Reflections. We also use Seesaw to complete Two Stars and a Wish for feedback. I use it and the students use it to give feedback to each other. #HackLearning
Yes! If we reward the process as much as the product, then the feedback becomes front and central. And if we reward your ability to provide quality peer feedback than we show our Ss that these are among the skills and attitudes that truly matter! #hacklearning
A3) Modeling... It does not matter how simple or quick the collaborative learning task is, we must model how to complete the collaborative learning task correctly so our students can learn the most information in the best way possible! #HackLearning
Another great #hacklearning chat, have to run cant wait to read back through later. Was excited for this topic with my latest blog was on staff collaboration. See you in 7 days! https://t.co/gir29H196t
A3: An important tactic I used was to intentionally plan student collaboration and student debriefs on my lesson plan. By planning this way, I made sure there was time for these activities during the day. #HackLearning
Q3: What tactics and tools can be used to support ALL students to collaborate in structures like Socratic seminars, class discussions, and debriefing sessions?
I keep thinking how important it is begin by building relationships and trust and to set up norms and routines early on so all this wonderfulness can happen #hacklearning

I'd suggest adding the success criteria and sentence stems as required ideas/statements for student feedback until you're seeing the feedback you like across the board. Any way to measure/ensure the feedback enhances the learner?
A3 I use Flipgrid for Reflections. We also use Seesaw to complete Two Stars and a Wish for feedback. I use it and the students use it to give feedback to each other. #HackLearning
I think collaboration has to be real-life and bit flexible, too. Sometimes I think we shut down anything non-school related. When I work with my team, we mostly focus on work, but "How's your weekend?" convos are in there too. I'm ok with that from our kids too. #hacklearning

If we get out of the way of some of our students, they’d likely create things beyond the scope of what we can imagine. I mean - that’s the genesis of Facebook. #hacklearning
