We chat every Tuesday night at 8:30-9:30 pm CST. All are welcome, especially EarlyEd teachers, leaders & experts. Co-founded & moderated by @techwnancy @JessicaCabeen & @VealHeidi
A1 An ideal math block for early learners would be structured in a workshop format including a mini lesson, time for independent practice, & differentiated small groups. #ECEchat
A1: first students answer a problem in their data collection folder, they work on solving problems using multiple strategies, next, problem solving/ number talk, stations, mini lesson, independent practice, intervention during stations. #ecechat
A1: Our Math block begins with a focus activity/question, leading into a math activity w/ manipulatives. Sometimes we have a math read aloud too! Then centers! #ecechat
A1 We are using Flexible Grouping to support all of our students. Baseline assignment to give PLC data to break students into 3 groups, teach the chapter unit give chapter test and start all over. #ECEchat
A1 I love how so many are including centers as part of an ideal math block. Its a perfect time to integrate foundational exploration & hand on mathematical experiences. #ECEchat
A1. My math block starts with a quick whole group mini-lesson then into Daily 5ish centers (M)eeting (A)pps (T)able Games (H)ands On...I prefer to teach math core in smaller groups #ECEchat
A2 Scaffolding math thinking, modeling & thinking aloud to demonstrate thought processes, LOTS of experiences with hands on manipulative & working with concrete materials! #ECEchat
A2 number talks! Getting students to really look and understand numbers and how they work and the patterns you can create, being able to do I️t mentally and explain their thinking. #ecechat
A2: Numberless Word Problems So many great conversations when I use one of these! Kids apply literacy strategies to comprehend the problem before they even see the numbers. #ECEchat
A2: Teacher-led instruction and then time for students to explore, both directed and undirected. Ss needs the opportunity to explore, make mistakes, and problem-solve.
A1: We ❤ integrating math into songs and finger plays (base 10 is a result of humans having 10 fingers, after all.) and using math games in small groups/at free choice. And finding math in literature! #ECEchat
These would have been great before teaching unknowns so students really think about what is actually happening and not what they are suppose “ to do” with the numbers! #ECEChat
A2: Teacher-led instruction and then time for students to explore, both directed and undirected. Ss needs the opportunity to explore, make mistakes, and problem-solve.
A2 engage in conversations w Ss discussing their thinking & asking them Q’s about the problem/thought process - modeling for them throughout the day on what this looks like / sounds like- take it outdoors w real like items- sit in centers w them & problem solve together #ecechat
A3 this is the best part! It feels like play all the time! So much we do during recess w running, jumping, hopping, counting leaves/acorns/clouds/pebbles/etc..the playground equipment is perfect for interactive positional words - this is also done in class! #ecechat
A3 Be present while they play and model the mathematical thought that the brain is doing. Begins the process of being aware of the procedure, reason & purpose #ecechat
A3: When I teach I'm gonna have one of these. Where if Ss want to know what 5+3 is they can put five blocks in one side and three in the other and count how many they have #ECEChat
A3. I take most concepts in district lessons and worksheets and turn them into a game...number cards, adding visuals, matching, sorting, using manip or an app...way more engaging #ECEchat
A3in 2nd it is difficult to incorporate play which I know is developmentally necessary, but I have variety of stations and I try to keep 2 very exploration based (creating, puzzles) every student will at least hit those twice a week with the rotation that I have I place. #ECEchat
A3: Provide opportunities to explore math through play by bringing math into play centers like counting cookies in the kitchen, making patterns with beads, etc. Engageni meaningful student directed conversation led by teacher input. #ECEchat
A2: Making sure it is relevant and connected to student interests. my Ss will count pirate treasure for days. 💰
Also asking questions to encourage metacognition- so they are aware of their own problem solving skills. #ecechat
A4. real life visuals to make connections in story problems, @Seesaw for drawing, appsmashing with other math manipulative apps and recording thinking #ECEchat
Q4- Making real life connections to the math concepts. Read Alouds that make connections with Math. Interactive math journaling at least twice a week. #ecechat
a3: games have been huge this year and are great for community building, too! Ss loved using clothes pins (fine motor) to fill recycled egg cartons they brought in (cut into 10 frames) #ECEchat
A5: Create certain activities within homework or worksheets that are designed to include parents, or perhaps have children play a math game with parents at home #ecechat
A5 @Seesaw and @ReadyRosie allow me to convey/show parents the skills we are working on; in turn they can use at home to strengthen what we are doing at school; bonus is the S/E time they spend with their child! #ecechat
Hello, popping in her a bit late. My name is Sandy Adams. I teach in an early childhood special education building in rural Missouri. I have worked in the field for over 30 years, but I have recently returned to the classroom in the last 5 years! #ECEchat
A5: I love sharing the free @joinvroom app with parents. Daily activities to do w/ their child @ home, or on the go, brain building basics in literacy, math, & language development! #ecechat
A5 Share the math skills using different methods- model for P's at school events, send home written info and math kits, post quick videos from classes #ECEchat
It is a paid program through my school that has short clips on every subject; I can select the clip & date that I want the particular subject matter to be shared. Helps Ps teach/play with their child #ecechat
Q5- During parent conference is a great time to reflect on the child’s progress. Then model for parents strategies they can use to help their child in needed areas. #ECEchat
A1 - In Pre-k, we don't tend to use a math block. In my room, we infuse math in multiple places. Ex: During morning meeting, learning centers/free choice time, STEAM lab/Playkerspace, snack time, small group time, loose parts play, etc... #ECEchat
