#5thchat is for people interested in chatting about topics in education, especially as they relate to Grade 5. The goal is to connect people who enjoy learning & sharing, plus supporting & creating partnerships worldwide!
#5thchat is starting up as we begin discussing Blended & Personalized Learning. Please Introduce yourself by sharing your name, role, & where you are from!
The Learning Accelerator reporting in for #5thchat! We work transform K-12 education by catalyzing high-quality blended learning, and we hope to be able to provide some helpful and free resources on tonight's chat!
Awesome! Always loved 4th grade (ever since student teaching in 4th). Very excited about next year! I'm sure I'll be picking your brain for ideas!!! :) #5thchat
A2 My definition of blended learning is incorporating technology and in-person learning. The tech should incorporate differentiated activities. The rigor should be there for all
Ss. #5thchat
A1: I will admit that I am rookie when it comes to blended learning. I define it as an integrated form of education where there is an online portion that supports the instruction in the classroom #5thchat
A1. We define blended learning as the strategic integration of in-person learning with technology to enable real-time data use, personalized instruction, and mastery-based progression. We have a few infographics to make the explanation easier: https://t.co/UmTvvOTDVB#5thchat
A1: My personal definition of blended learning is to integrate technology, where it fits, into everyday classroom routines and assignments. It puts anything on the table if Ss will benefit. #5thchat
A1. To me, Blended Learning is a framework were students are empowered through their choices (time, place, path & pace) in a combination of personalized digital and face-to- face settings! #5thchat
#5thchat
I think Blended Learning is finding a balance between Ss learning through Technology and more traditional methods. It also includes lots of student CHOICE and personalized instruction and pace.
A1 blended learning is combo of teacher led/ student led learning using tech to offer choice, increase collaboration, creativity, critical thinking & communication. Learning at their pace and on their level #5thchat

A1 - To quote Alice Keeler, "Paperless is not a pedagogy." Blended learning is taking the best format for that task, whether that is digital or analog, and balancing the two. #5thchat
A1. To me, Blended Learning is a framework were students are empowered through their choices (time, place, path & pace) in a combination of personalized digital and face-to- face settings! #5thchat
A1. #BlendedLearning is Face-to-face instruction blended with digital learning where Ss have some control over time, place, path, and pace & the modalities along each students path are connected to provide an integrated learning experience. #5thchat
#5thchat A2 Based on individual classroom and student strengths, teachers can choose meaningful technology and student centered approaches that enhance student learning and play on the students' strengths. I try not to pick technology just for the sake of having technology.
A2:We've come to rely on Discovery Education for videos related to our content areas as well as for our genius hours While it's important for elementary Ss to learn to read it's important for us to teach them how to analyze and synthesize information presented diffntly #5thchat
A2. Often, BL/PL models vary based on how a district defines and uses it -- and that's OK! We talked to ed leaders across the country and heard from them on what it's like to adopt existing models vs. pick and choose. Lots of good insights here: https://t.co/uqXcLSeHmc#5thchat
#5thchat
A2:
I use a lot of Hyperdocs, Choice Boards, and Tech programs that can level the content such as Newsela, Digital ReadWorks, etc. I like that I can assign to groups in Google Classroom, too. Same assignment - different levels.
A2 1st know your Ss to relate to them, build playlists & learning menus w choice, create open ended assignments that allow for creativity & multiple responses based on Ss interests. Many ways to problem solve & share. No more one size fits all model #5thchat
A2. Flipped- embed flipped lessons within Ss playlists
Individual Student Playlists- design Ss playlist based on assessment data. Create modules/assignments for the whole year so that Ss can move at their own pace.
Flex Fridays- remediation, enrichment & Ss conferences #5thchat
That is a crucial skill to teach students. Students at a younger age have a hard time learning how to watch a video for learning versus watching it for enjoyment #5thchat
A2- This is where #edtech becomes an amazing tool! Hyperdocs are a great way to differentiate instruction. I have also used #quests in @classcraftgame, and @goformative to allows students take different paths based on choice and need. #5thchat
A3: The role of the teacher in a blended learning environment is like a coach. Sometimes you need to address the whole time, most of the time you need to work with small groups or 1:1. #5thchat
A3 Ts are cheerleaders & faciltators, helping to generate ideas as needed, offering feedback. Ss are teachers, problem solvers, critical thinkers, collaborators, communicators, researchers, etc...the list goes on. They are working harder than me #5thchat
My district is 1:1, we utilize @Achieve3000 for informational texts at various lexiles! I also love @khanacademy for math! I would love to add in something for my students to learn a 2nd language during genius hour! #5thchat
That is a crucial skill to teach students. Students at a younger age have a hard time learning how to watch a video for learning versus watching it for enjoyment #5thchat
A3 The role of the T is to be a support system for the Ss. Ts need to make sure Ss are owning their learning through tech not just doing it for compliance. Ss need to be reflective to determine what they need to own their learning. Blended learning is more Ss centered. #5thchat
I agree 100%! Students should be heavy lifters in their education as well. Teachers are there to help guide and encourage them through adversity! #5thchat
Adding most of my work is up front building relationships and building meaningful activities for Ss. They take the lead in the classroom & run with it. #5thchat
A3: In a blended learning environment, the T is the facilitator and the S is the active participant. Ts jump in with minilessons while Ss work collaboratively or independently. T floats, questions, and sprinkles "thought nuggets." #5thchat
A3. One of the most dynamic aspects of BL/PL is the adaptable nature of the roles of teachers and students. Teachers support, help engage, provide guidance, and can lead students who, in turn, become the educators, analysts, and drivers of their learning experiences. #5thchat
A3. The teacher creates personalized learning experiences for Ss, observes/confers, provides targeted small-group instruction, personalized feedback, & the next pathway for students when they are ready. #5thchat
A4: Flexible seating is great for allowing students to move to work with groups or alone as needed. I love having tables and individual spaces available based on what they prefer. #5thchat
#5thchat I think having a variety of flexible spaces that could be used in ways to socially enhance learning could help facilitate blended learning. Students can collaborate while utilizing technology or work independently depending on the needs of the task.
#5thchat
A4: Our District has been rolling out flexible furniture. I was resistant at first, but am slowing coming along. I'm still old-school enough to want each kid to have a desk! But . . . we have various learning spaces defined and Ss move around a lot.
A4: My district has been one-to-one since 2014, so I've redesigned my learning space to accommodate. One thing I've noticed happen kind of on its on is Ss naturally move to where they're most comfortable to work. Flexible seating came on its own without any help from me #5thchat
A4: I think the most critical component to a learning space is that it is adaptable. My room often changes organization throughout the day depending on the different events of that day/time period. #5thchat
A5- Flexible Seating and student choice! Depending on task or learning objective, Ss move to their best work areas. That varies with how they want to work! Flexibility is key! #5thchat
A4. 2 considerations here: physical space in which Ss learn & the time in which Ss are given "space" to learn. There are numerous strategies for both, from modular furniture to dedicated time blocks. Hope these strategies from BL/PL schools help! https://t.co/cDy5rkQrHE#5thchat
A4 allow collaborative & individual spaces for Ss, recording space for videos, allow movement w/in & outside the classroom. Would ā¤ļø a green screen & additional recording resources. Canāt wait to hear everyone elseās thoughts #edtech#wishlist#5thchat
Last year I took the plunge on flexible seating. I had enough space and furniture available that every kids could have a "home base" and still have options for other places to sit. My new classroom is a bit smaller though. #5thchat
A4. I love flexible seating! My classroom changes throughout the year for a variety of projects and lessons. #5thchat
Below we transformed my classroom into a speakeasy for our Harlem Renaissance themed poetry unit!
A4. It is important in to include individual space, collaborative space, and a teacher directed space with your classroom. Students should have choice! #5thchat
Yes, collaborative & individual spaces are so important! It is equally important to model each spaces intention to promote productive choices! #5thchat
A5. Whole Group Instruction,
Delivering Content One Way, &
Assigning the Same Tasks for All Students has got to STOP! Personalized and meaningful learning paths are where you get student gains! #5thchat
A5: What gets in the way of effective blended learning? Lecture (sit and get) Traditional textbook assgts Straight Rows and Quiet Classrooms to name a few #5thchat
A5. There's a danger to prescriptive teaching methods that can do more harm than good, and BL/PL can aim to address that. If something isn't resonating with Ss in a single format, it's worth exploring other modalities and formats. One size definitely does not fit all Ss! #5thchat
A5. Whole Group Instruction,
Delivering Content One Way, &
Assigning the Same Tasks for All Students has got to STOP! Personalized and meaningful learning paths are where you get student gains! #5thchat
A6. Targeted Small Group Guided Instruction,
One-on-One Conferencing,
Interventions/Progress Monitoring,
Observing Student Progress, and Providing Feedback are all great uses of face-to-face instructional time! #5thchat
A6- Sometimes its the "required tasks," those things that the district, or state say must be done. Sometimes it is time- This is why sharing between Ts is so important! #5thchat
A6. Targeted Small Group Guided Instruction,
One-on-One Conferencing,
Interventions/Progress Monitoring,
Observing Student Progress, and Providing Feedback are all great uses of face-to-face instructional time! #5thchat
A6. In-person time with Ss is integral to PL/BL and can be adapted to Ss and school needs. It can be structured flexibly to maximize the amount of individual and/or small-group attention Ss receive, allow them to work at their own pace and on differentiated content. #5thchat
A7. Mini Lessons
Recorded Read Alouds
Recorded Think Alouds
Recorded Instructions for Complex Tasks
Providing Examples/Non Examples
Vocabulary Review
Model Peer Evaluations/Rubrics
App Tutorials
Logistics/Process Videos
#5thchat
A7. Individual Playlists:
Tailored to meet individual studentsā needs
Data driven to close gaps
Station Rotation:
Small Group Instruction
Balanced Literacy
Maximize Instructional Time
#5thchat
A7 view the data frequently, daily when working w Ss. Adapt accordingly ā¤ļø programs like ALEKS, achieve3000, noredink also important to not overkill such programs- have Ss reflect on their learning #5thchat
#5thchat A7 I love the idea of creating digital resources to help support student work. Teachers can create videos that students can refer back to at home and at school.
Tech can also be used as a way for students to demonstrate their learning in new creative ways.
A8. Daily Schedule - Utilize individual playlist model while integrated flipped lessons within playlists.
Weekly - Flex Friday to utilize the flex model for student to take their own path as I progress monitor, complete interventions, pull remediation groups
#5thchat
A8. I am also transitioning from a bock schedule to a individual and collaborative schedule. Sample: 8:00 - Begin to arrive; work on playlists
8:30 - Morning Meeting
9:00 - Enhancements
9:45 - Collaborative Project (Reading/S.S.)
10:45 - Personalized Playlists
#5thchat
A8. Going to give a shout-out here to a NYC high school doing really innovative work around scheduling. Ss follow custom curriculum, and educators and school leaders follow a master schedule designed to maximize human-to-human contact through a three-block schedule. #5thchat
A8 use pretests to meet Ss where their at, only use while group instruction when needed, otherwise use rotational model (play lists and menus) based on Ss need. Plan with other Ts and adapt to fit needs of your class. Work smarter not harder #5thchat
A8: Don't schedule for down time. Instead, have some things that can be worked in in small spurts. I gamify my classroom, and like to have side quests available kids can work on whenever they finish other assignments early. #5thchat
#5thchat
A8:
We have adopted #EduProtocols so we can increase proficiency quickly with more "reps". This opens up more time for PBL, Genius Hour, Lit. Circles, etc. Bonus - EduProtocols can be highly blended, too!
Thank you all for am amazing #5thchat tonight!
Shoutout to @SlidesCarnival for their slide templates and @jaymelinton for her inspiring Blended Learning Blueprint!
