Join #ICEilchat for the last Thursday of the month at 8pm CST as we discuss topics on ed tech, collaboration, building a PLN, professional learning and so much more!
Hi Everyone! I'm so honored to moderate #ICEilchat tonight! My name is Jennie Magiera. I'm from Chicago, IL and I am the Chief Program Officer for @edtechteam :)! In previous lives, I taught at @ChiPubSchools and was the CTO at @62schools.
Good evening! Amber Heffner @ice_il Executive Director. Looking forward to #ICEilchat tonight and #ISTE18 in a few weeks! Big thanks to @MsMagiera for joining us tonight!
A1: At the end of the school year, I like to take a moment to just do nothing. Usually lasts about a day! I reflect on the past and set goals for what I can improve on in the year ahead #ICEilchat
A1: I plan on reflecting on this past year and working/ planning for a inspiring start to our 2018-19 school year for the #sd113a staff, Ss and parents so we can have an even better year next year! #ICEilchat
A1: I plan to provide some technology PD for our teachers virtually! This will be the first time virtually! I want to try other avenues to delivering PD. #ICEilchat
A1: I plan on taking some time to relax with my family for a couple of weeks and then start to tackle the stack of professional development books I have been wanting ro read!! #ICEilchat#sd113a
A1- For me this summer... after curriculum work. It is back to my daily morning yoga practice and work on sharing creativity ideas on Twitter with my PLN which they can take right into their classroom with the hashtag #creativities#ICEilchat
A2: Summer is often one of our busiest times of year at district because we're reflecting and planning...BUT- my personal recharge is admin retreat and planning for an inspirational start for staff with Ss cheering them on as they return! #ICEilchat
A2: I am not sure it is recharge or if I just create more anxiety, but I learn/try to master new things that I want to share with our teachers. I then try to figure out how to deliver it! #ICEilchat
A2: Spending time that I don't normally have during the school year, with my two kids, refreshes me! I love being around them and seeing the world through their eyes. It starts to put school things into perspective for me! #ICEilchat
I have @MsMagiera book Courageous Edventures: Navigating Obstacles to Discover Classroom Innovation. I plan to tackle that one along with the Hyperdocs Handbook. #ICEilchat

#ICEilchat Amber Harper from Fort Wayne, IN A1. I plan to work on my #GoogleEI project and lead PD locally. A2. I work out HARD every day. Keeps me positive and focused! PS - HI, @MsMagiera AKA Coach! ! 😉
A3 - Podcasts usually not about education. Reading Alice in Wonderland (tradition). Hanging out at the Chagall Windows at the Art Institute. #ICEilchat
A3: I plan to read some books to recharge. @MsMagiera, your book Courageous Edventures: Navigating Obstacles to Discover Classroom Innovation! Any book studies coming up? I need to get littles PD going to plan to use social media to learn more! #ICEilchat
A3: I love using the summer to catch up with all my educator friends that are in different districts. The school year is too hectic for us to meet up, so summer is our time to grow professionally and relax together. Hearing from them recharges me for a new school year! #ICEilchat
Hi Amber! Thanks for joining and congrats on the #GoogleEI project! You should connect w/ @joannacarroll96 who is doing AMAZING with her project! #ICEilchat

#ICEilchat to elaborate on A2. I find setting some BIG goals during the summer helps me to focus my energy while I have the brain space. Reading every morning and doing a lot of reflecting. Take more time to be a better mom and wife.
Q3 I like to expand and see how technology is being used in other ways outside of education such as athletics, business etc. It shows me other people's perspectives. #ICEilchat
Q4: Speaking of recharging professionally, #ISTE18 is in #ChiTown this year! Yay! For those who have attended before, what’s your TOP TIP for new attendees? For new attendees, what’s your TOP QUESTION about attending?
#ICEilchat
Recharging is key. Teachers are some of the hardest working, dedicated, do-whatever-it-takes people on the planet and need, and deserve, plenty of disconnected time during the summer. #ICEilchat
A3: #ISTE18 is a definite professional recharge. And looking to dig into some new opportunities for my own personal learning this year...#ISTEStandards#advocacy work ahead! #ICEilchat
A3 joining the party late. We organized a patio PD. Bought my staff a book of their choice and coming together to discuss, socialize and fellowship over the summer at peoples houses. #personalizedPD#ICEilchat
A1: spending time with colleagues and then the next morning teaching a coding class in another district. Looking forward to meeting some new students! #ICEilchat
Beginning 7/15 #ICEil will be doing a book study w/ @rushtonh " Making Your Teaching Something Special: 50 Simple Ways to Become a Better Teacher" Stay tuned for more info. It will be epic! #ICEilchat

#ICEilchat A3. Getting time to take part in #twitterchats recharges me! I also love catching up on PD and #selfhelp books. I love the feeling of being inspired and I’m working on adding to my quote stash! 🙌🏼
A4: take lots of pictures. Keep a journal and meet at least 5 new people to add to your professional community. So excited to connect with all of you! #ICEilchat
Q5: For all of those coming into Chicago for #ISTE18 what are your favorite local tips for them?
Please share on our hashtag #ICEilchat AND #ISTE18 so all can see your tips!

Recharging is key. Teachers are some of the hardest working, dedicated, do-whatever-it-takes people on the planet and need, and deserve, plenty of disconnected time during the summer. #ICEilchat
Take time to do an architectural boat tour if the weather’s nice and you have a little break. You’ll learn some history and get some nice views! #ICEilchat#ISTE18
Little Goat friend pickles and the Banh Mi goat burger are LEGIT. And the brunch at Cindy’s Rooftop is delicious (and so’s the view). #ISTE18#ICEilchat
A4: I created this top-10 list to help new attendees. Of these I would have to say that the Poster Sessions are wonderful places to obtain lots of fresh ideas quickly. You can hop from one to the nex #ISTE18 is in #ChiTown#ICEilchat
A3: My professional recharge is attending PD over the summer...it does help to get me pumped up for what to share when the new year begins. Lots of virtual and IRL things can be attended. #ICEilchat
A6: Planning to change a little at a time and making strides toward substantial change. Don’t try to change everything at the beginning of the year. By mid-October you’ll probably regret it and you’ll be really tired. #ICEilchat
Q4: Top tip for for new attendees...check your email often between now & then. Lots of sponsors & vendors send emails about "special events", like meet & greet, or after hour party activities. Can be great networking opportunities. You don't want to miss it. #ISTE2018#ICEilchat
Hey, also late to the party - Jen Leban, Creative Tech teacher @ElmhurstD205@SandburgD205 - attending my first #ISTE this summer to help support @WeVideo - super excited to meet Twitter PLN friends IRL! #ICEilchat
It was free, and all I remember is that I went right from the airport to TeachMeet at the conference center. Just set my luggage in the corner. Maybe @nathan_stevens has more details - or knows someone that would. #ICEilchat

A7: We have to continue to find ways to positively promote our school districts and tell our stories through social media throughout the entire year...we are committed to this in #sd113a#ICEilchat
A6 Plan. I set goals and would framework my year. Then I would begin to search and find assets to enhance. I never structured the planning - I would work on it when I was engaged. It looked like having a jigsaw puzzle sitting out all summer. #ICEilchat
I’d love to add Dark Matter Coffee @DarkMatter2521 to the list of places to visit - there are several city locations, and a friend of mine is one of the owners. Their coffee is so so good! #iste#ICEilchat
People take the podium for like 2 or 3 minutes to share something they are really passionate about. People share some really amazing ways to use tech in the classroom. It’s also an amazing way to connect with people before ISTE really kicks off. #ICEilchat
A7: I like to go to conferences early in the summer so I have time to plan from what I learn. Heading to @USMSpark in about a week to present for the 3rd straight year. Short trip to Milwaukee - well worth it. #iceilchat
In Denver it was just a big open room and people came and went as they pleased. It’s before everything else really gets running, so no limits that I’m aware of. #ICEilchat
Q1: I always end the year dreaming about all the NEW things I want to try in the fall! This year I painted a bunch of walls in my classroom so that when Ss return, it’ll be fresh and exciting! #ICEilchat
A8: At @iste I was sitting with another tech coach & she kept looking over my shoulder at @MsMagiera and said, “I have such an ‘edu-crush’ on Jenny Magiera”. She almost fell over when I offered to introduce her to you. Thanks for your positive impact on educators! #ICEilchat
Q2: I have a 6-year-old, so we like to use the days off (@mrleban is a teacher, too) in the summer to do things as a family, like go to the aquarium, or the zoo. #ICEilchat
