#saskedchat I am a fourth year elementary education student at the University of Regina. This is my very first #saskedchat so I am excited to learn and interact from and with everyone!
More and more of my shift in practice has been towards:
Personalized learning journeys linked with formative descriptive feedback loops and archived learning in efolios #saskedchat
Tonight during #saskedchat , instead of questions, you will be given a prompt to respond to in the form of When I Say: - You Say? The topic is Supporting Student Growth so keep that in mind throughout the chat! Get ready!
Hello, my name is Brooklyn Mantai and this is my first time on Saskedchat! I have chosen to participate in Saskedchat tonight due to a recommendation from Katia's #edtc300 class! I am a fourth year Education student who recently completed internship. #saskedchat
Hey #saskedchat my name is Brooklyn, I am finishing up my degree at the #UofR this spring! This is my first time joining the chat and I am so excited! I am also taking #edtc300 with @kbhildebrandt which taught me how to have a twitter chat🙈
Hi #saskedchat I’m a 2nd year secondary student majoring in general science at the UofR. I’m joining in tonight for my first time, in hopes of getting a better understanding of certain aspects of the educational field and making new connections!
Just talked with a group of student teachers at @UVicEducation#edci336 great seeing the next generation getting ready! Thanks for getting involved in #saskedchat
A1: how high!? As in I don’t like talking about how “low” a learner may be, but what the potential may be...even if we need to do different(iated) #saskedchat
A1: is very important for students to recognized their own growth, from where they started and to keep striving to become a better then the person they were yesterday.#saskedchat
A2: Endless possibilities to the amount of strategies available/necessary for each classroom. Specifically, TEACHING strategies. Having a wide variety of these in your back pocket will ensure success for all students in the class. #saskedchat
How many?! I believe that the more strategies kids have, the more creative and critical they can think. A math example (more lines make for more strategies to show/practice) #saskedchat
Scaffolding a variety of strategies so students can access schema and key knowledge is important - gotta do the maths outside the math time! #saskedchat
A3: NO MORE HIERARCHICAL CLASSROOM LAYOUT. Please. We aren't creating blue collar workers anymore. We are training innovators and free thinkers, and our classrooms should reflect. #edtc300#saskedchat
A3: together! For a long time I built classroom with the students (even while getting glares from others going full Pinterest through August) but glad that anxiety folks confirmed what was working for me and my learners! (Not that the walls were bare...but...) #saskedchat
#saskedchat A1: I used to think of academic growth when I thought of/heard that phrase. this year I think of a child feeling safe, cared about, and supported as the focus. Either way student growth is the goal! #ChildhoodTrauma#ToughYear
A3: FLEXIBILITY! MOVEMENT! I love having an open and flexible setting where we can adapt as we go to create a setting that best suits our learners and encourages movement! #saskedchat
Oooh and A3 - very often we think horizontal with varying seats and cushions et al, but don’t forget vertical - standing spaces, wall/window writing... #saskedchat
Providing an inclusive classrooms by making classrooms open for all students. Students need space to move! Students should not be excluded. #saskedchat
My wife hates my last classroom design: my standing table in the middle and kids out their workspaces wherever it worked (small groups, corners etc) no straight lines. #saskedchat
Standing tables are awesome! Students who can't sit still and need to be moving love them! I also love the U tables that are being placed in almost every classroom. #saskedchat
A3: A brown motif with a spattering if uncomfortable desks with some nice foliage, stand up desk, circular rotational chairs and a hint of sunshine through windows for squirrel watching. #saskedchat
A4. Make it meaningful. Grades are not feedback. They are compliance’s feedback. Reporting has a compliance feel when I think of it. Specific timely feedback. #saskedchat
#saskedchat A4: ugh! I’m an LST and I always find the kids I work with appear to show little growth in the traditional reporting sense. Convos w parents can be tricky too. Many ppl don’t understand differentiation still.
“Number?” In protest once I used a “spinning wheel app” on my phone with different letter grades and spun it in front of an assistant superintendent. Numbers are subjective at best. Descriptive feedback is personalized #saskedchat
A4 part 2: in need of an overhaul to get away from archaic paper practises that causes teachers and students stress and does not bring about continuous learning. #saskedchat
Aditi, prefix Madame, pronoun she, I bake a lot of banana bread, and I like to share recipes, math activities, and anything ambitious and inclusive. #saskedchat
I love this because I, too, feel under prepared to be able to successfully and accurately assess my students. Hoping that as time goes on, this part of teaching becomes easier for me (and you!) #saskedchat
A5: Summative! Formative! Context of assessment and influencing factors can play a large role on the outcome of the assessment. Ongoing assessment is also SO important! #saskedchat
A5. Don’t forget to remember student self assessment and reflection. It can be done in multiple ways so Ss can measure how successful they are and know when they have reached that success in regards to the target. Success criteria. #saskedchat
A5 know the standard! ie link samples of student work to performance standards so that there are visible areas where they are and what they should be working towards #saskedchat
A6: Something that can enhance students learning when it is used in a way that i meaningful to all students. And something we all need to use in all classes #saskedchat
I think that critical reflection is something that many people - teachers included - don’t really understand. It involves going deeper about into learning #saskedchat
A6 the greatest tool for differentiation to impact learning - from the Apple II that meant I would never be a “messy writer” again to my iPhone which allows me to communicate in text or video or audio or or or #saskedchat
A6: A useful tool in the classroom. Technology is amazing because of the wide variety of resource available at the simple push of a button. #saskedchat
A6 also should enable learners to do things that would not be possible without it (ie readable script from me, visual presentations, movies, games, etc) #saskedchat
Netiquette is key! My main rule for tech in the hallway/classroom is “tool or toy” - tools enhance learning, toys distract (but I acknowledge that sometimes the kids need the distraction) #saskedchat
A7: Never had to deal with it yet, but in my mind, we want parents to know what is going on in the space and let them know that they are always welcome
#saskedchat
They could be or they could be like other learning tools - we use them when they are the best tool but put them away when doing something else. #saskedchat
A7: In my internship we used Remind. Remind is a great app to communicate with parents and to also share with the parents what students have been doing in the classroom. #saskedchat
A7: it isn't so important to have parents involved in the classroom and in the child's learning! This would help create teachers and parents working together!, #saskedchat
A7: CRUCIAL. To an extent. Teachers cannot do this on their own, they need parental/guardian involvement to help make the process smooth and to the highest quality for our students. #saskedchat
$430 for a tablet is much less than most of the devices I’ve used (admittedly Mac biased but damn the infrastructure works! I’m almost down to just my iPad Pro - except for a printing restriction....) #saskedchat
A7: Parental involvement, particularly education on thing like inclusion and equity, is so so so hard. But plays a significant role in the success of the student at home. #saskedchat#edtc300
Parents are necessary for a child’s academic success. They cannot be replaced by a teacher. The two parties must work together with the same goal of raising a new member of society. #saskedchat
#saskedchat I’m elementary so most of our teachers use class dojo and I love sending pics of what the kids are doing, a heads up that somethings coming home or a quick positive note!
If they don’t learn it (and practice it) at school..... @MediatedReality is an amazing resource to connect with for tech and schools & the world! #saskedchat

Oh I use my iPad Pro for so much - even writing my thesis papers. But I still use sticky notes when jotting down Ideas and I freehand my writing ideas on drawing paper still. #saskedchat#usewhatworks
Yapsolutely! I wish more Ts, esp. grade 5 and up to take the time to embrace digital citizenship & teach Ss the pros, cons & dangers of the inter-web. #saskedchat

#saskedchat this has proven tricky to monitor in my experience. We have a pocket chart in our middle and high school classrooms-kids and adults put phones in it at the start of the class and if needed are easily accessible.

A8: This is such an important part to every school. I think having a strong school culture can make the everyday experience at school AMAZING for both teachers and students! #saskedchat
That’s really interesting, I make my students do it, but I keep my phone at my desk. I find I often use it for attendance or sending reminders, but maybe I’m sending the wrong signal by keeping it for myself while denying them.#saskedchat

A8: School culture is very important for students and teachers. It makes such a difference! You can defiantly tell when a school has an amazing school culture!
#saskedchat
A8: I think school culture has a huge impact on the students and their behaviour! Encouraging and modelling positive interactions in all parts of the school is key #saskedchat
I should be available to be back on next Thursday, trying to maintain this personal work life balance after being gone for two weeks takes some effort. #saskedchat

A9: Important. Seek out the PD you need to succeed as a teacher! Things are constantly changing and that's why we need to continuously learn!
#saskedchat
I lost one....not my next. Though it’s end cap disappeared so I got an end with a stylus end so I can use it on other screens too! Best @WishShopping purchase! #saskedchat

A9: This is such an important part of being a teacher. Being able to continue to grow at all times as a teacher will help our students. Making professional development relevant is also especially important #saskedchat
A9: Useful/relevant PD is great! The process of learning never ends and I love new opportunities to learn relevant info to help us grow and support our students! #saskedchat
A9: Professional Development provides opportunities to better yourself as an educator and allows me to continue to be a lifelong learner. Build that #PLN! #saskedchat
PD, when led by people who have training in adult professional development facilitation, is amazing. PD, when led by unenthused, volun-told teachers, is often not as meaningful. #saskedchat
I can’t plug in my truck 😂 but it did make some odd internal noises in the engine and other places. I was wondering if the whole thing would fall apart! #saskedchat

#saskedchat A8: I think school culture starts w the staff. When you feel valued, respected and happy you’re more productive and energetic. That is then evident in your planning, interactions and overall attitude.
Asked Ss to come up with ways to describe concave up/down parabolas today. Got the normal answers of smile/frown and hill/valley. I nearly fell on the floor laughing when one said “top of a potato, bottom of a potato.” #mtbos#kidsarehilarious#iTeachMath
A9: Somewhere that everyone should feel they belong. Whether it is in a classroom, a staff room, online (AKA this chat!) community shows a sense of belonging to all involved. #saskedchat
Didn’t anyone tell you? No one really keeps up. That,s why we have an archive of #saskedchat that is posed after. Otherwise it’s like trying to drink from a fire hydrant!

A10: Fostering a welcoming and positive community in the school/classroom is so important for students/families to thrive in their environments #saskedchat
A10: evolving from@brick and mortar schools to learning communities - be present beyond the school boundaries (and add examples into the portfolio from beyond the 9-3 bells!) #saskedchat
A9 #saskedchat Worth a creative lens. Some of the PD that I find to be the most inspiring comes from hallway conversations with colleagues. Find people who both challenge and uplift you... you'll grow!
