Our Learning from Mistakes page https://t.co/Hk0cJhB3b1 "If you don't succeed try, try again!" Have to encourage students to take risks and try new things and nothing wrong if they make mistakes along the way. Our Risk-Taking page https://t.co/m6kv3Hykq7#edchat#bfc530
Usually through writing. We talk about how it's never a "one and done"... it's a process and they have to keep at it. #bfc530 Also through reading books with this topic- like Hatchet.
“Perseverance” is the ‘name of the game’ today...going until 8 pm tonight with parent/teacher conference, immediately following the school day! 😊😊😊 #bfc530
Im not sure if you teach perseverance more than you encourage it. Dont say "that's great" when it isn't. Offer constructive criticism, encourage to press on, & reward accomplishment displaying hard work pays off #bfc530
Perseverance is about never giving up...I try to stress that their are always positive solutions available when faced with challenges and/or problems...we explore them together regularly. #bfc530
Can you teach perseverance or do you practice it? Teachers have to be giving kids the opportunity to persevere. Can’t learn to be a good runner if you never run. #bfc530
We have an early dismissal. I restrained from "liking" my superintendent's tweet announcing it last night. Im not sure if people would understand me being playful with it and interpret it as not liking my job #bfc530
For my #Gamers it's built into the course. They must find mistakes and fix them on a daily basis. Part of process. They MUST persevere if they are to make a game:)
#bfc530
Have you ever seen the video of Tom and the butterfly? Its about a little boy who gets specific feedback while drawing a butterfly so each time he adds more detail #bfc530
Gm. I don’t believe you have to teach it. It’s pre-packed inside. A human skill and gift. My job is to use a bigger net to identify it. To know that my inherent or cultural, or prof definition of it may not match the s’s. S has it. My job to see it . #BFC530
Make sure feedback is a natural part of your classroom. Students will learn to expect it and use it. While we can’t necessarily teach perseverance, we can encourage it by creating an environment where everyone and everything is a work in progress. #BFC530
A: It’s a challenge, especially for middle school students. We talk about the #7habitsofhighlyeffectivepeople and use it as a lens through out the year. #bfc530
I try to teach my students about growth mindset during the different books we read and the activities following that. We did a Jo Boaler activity at the beginning of the year to show how their brain gets bigger when they make mistakes #bfc530
Perseverance happens downstream once stressors have been identified and reduced. If I'm not seeing it, I'll try and figure out why not before attempting to develop it. #bfc530
Allowing students to re-do (test, writing assignment, etc) shows them that with continued effort, success can be achieved. Some take advantage of the opportunity, some don't, but still a good visual lesson for them that not giving up is a good thing! #bfc530

By finishing what we start. Even if we fall behind where we think we should be. Even if our projects frustrate us. And especially when projects take us to unexpected places. That will teach perseverance. #bfc530
Good morning, #bfc530! One important piece of teaching perseverance is modeling it. It's also super important to create safe spaces for students to make mistakes. Then incentivize and/or recognize students who don't give up when it's time to try again.
When discussing the writing process, I share w/my students how it took me almost a month to complete my introduction for my senior thesis in college b/c I wanted to create a strong desire in the reader to want to read the rest & I was rewarded by their comments #bfc530
Remember the famous statement by Thomas Edison in discovering the light bulb- “I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.” Model perseverance and point to classic exemplars. #bfc530
A combination grading practices, modeling, and intentional planning
~give multiple opportunities ~share your journey
~plan opportunities for coaching and reinforcing
In my experience have been effective to teach perseverance #bfc530

I tell personal stories I'd perseverance. I relate them to whoever my audience is at the time, Ss, Ts, my own kids. I also cruise around the halls and playground on a skateboard, doing tricks. Ss ask if I've fallen. I say yes, but you always get back up & try again. #bfc530
It’s absolutely wonder to have a young, new teacher teaching all of us so much about great pedagogy and how to love our kids! You are a STAR, Kelsey! Thanks for joining our #bfc530 team!
Modeling it is my feeling as well. Share about yourself as a T. Seek feedback from kids and also try to understand their challenges. Make it a project. Words have to be more than vocabulary.
#bfc530
GM! We just started a Grad at Grad initiative w 8 SEL competencies that we want all Ss to have when they graduate. Our Culture Team is in the midst of the comprehensive rollout of this but teachers are already making it live! Growth focused and resilient are two of them. #BFC530
Yesterday I created a too long, boring & confusing video on electoral college. Tomorrow, I plan to redo the lesson the lesson to get it right and share with the students how I failed and how I rectified it #bfc530#grit#growthmindset#modeling
Yes! I've seen that in a few of my students this year, so I'm working really hard to reinforce growth mindset practices and make sure they know I believe in them #bfc530
Have a great Thursday everyone and be safe if you are getting hit with the snow/ice tonight. Glad I picked up a bag of salt for the driveway last night. Im out! #bfc530
It sounds terrible but i had a student on camp break down (they often do) saying he wanted his mother to come and get him. I rang her up eventually and asked her what i should do and she told me to say to him that she loved him and that's why she wasn't coming . #bfc530
Where to start? We don’t have an electoral college. Federal elections use preferential voting to determine the candidate. Voting in Federal, State and Local Government elections in Australia is compulsory and typically happen on a Saturday. #bfc530
When we see ourselves + students see themselves as always in beta + constantly improving, feedback is welcomed rather than seen as a personal attack. That’s a healthier, more growth-oriented environment than the defensive, closed environments I’ve tended to see. #BFC530
Talking about parliamentarian rule is always tricky w/middle schoolers here (11-14 year olds) I relate it to no president and the Speaker of the House in the U.S. also being in the role of president. #bfc530
Yes. And if they don't get 50% then the lowest is eliminated and their number 2 vote moves to number 1 and so on until someone gets 50% of the votes +1 #bfc530
Absolutely! That’s the key question! We have to show that we’re willing to take their feedback to improve instructionally + that we’re constantly striving to grow with advice and tips from administrators, colleagues + our virtual PLNs. #BFC530
Under constitution Prime Minister=Head of Govt.Head of State is Queen Elizabeth II represented by Governor-General. GGswears in Prime Minister,Deputy PM, Ministers etc. GG declares parliament open after an election&issues writs for election. GG signs legislation into law #BFC530
Any way I can! Movie clips, Kid President videos, sharing my own struggles, asking THEM why 1-and-done is acceptable to them - then changing the perception incrementally, celebrating revision / 2nd and 3rd attempts / growing a tolerance (not acceptance) of failure
#bfc530
My class isn't the easiest, so long-term success is celebrated while recognizing the energy and effort put forth by students.
Ss are encouraged at each stage of a long-term project.
Conferences when students are struggling or feeling defeated.
#bfc530
Grit. Isn't that the new buzz word? Recently attended @breakoutEDU training and breakouts are an excellent way to encourage grit and perseverance especially among our higher level students. They also fosyer collaboration and problem solving skills. #BFC530
Well, this a rather fortuitous bounce in the universe... How do we teach perseverance? Acknowledge that it’s hard. Acknowledge that it’s an individual effort done collectively.
Also, if you don’t, follow @pernilleripp You wont be disappointed.

This will only work if we don't hold a student's past attempts against him/her by averaging the scores or giving reduced credit for a re-do. Allowing multiple attempts communicates that we are all growing and different rates and we want to know what students can do now. #bfc530
