A1: Very much interested in this convo. Going to lurk a bit...
A1 I'll admit I don't have much experience on this one! Interested to hear more about it!
A1: I have no experience with it whatsoever. Who determines whether a S makes it? Who calls for nominations? https://t.co/6vcAdWuhkD
A1: allows schools to count 8% of S population as GT through local placement policy- my experience is many schools do not do this
I know he has ties to the area, as he has writing workshops at Rose. Perhaps he'll tell us.
A1 I like the multi criteria, it allows more kids to qualify that should qualify.
A1 Ss can be gifted in other areas besides academics such as fine arts
A1. Aaand I'm out already. No experience!
Crystal Szymanski, Chisholm MS Principal...reading Summer of the Monkeys w/ my 9-yr-old.
Hi all! Late to the party today!
Andrea Gaines Union HS Science T, murder mystery smthg, kinda boring
Not about this chat. But Josh Groban just gave a shout out to quality Arts Education!
What makes up the multi criteria? https://t.co/4teSjybAPd
A1 I like the multi criteria, it allows more kids to qualify that should qualify.
A1: I have such mixed feelings when it comes to GT. I wish it was called something else.
multiple criteria nomination is set by the local education activity
A1 I'm not too familiar with criteria for GT.What would multi-criteria look like? Teacher generated assessments?
Tasha Jefferson first grade
Interesting! If you could call it something else what would you call it? https://t.co/NOjtOTnuqx
A1: I have such mixed feelings when it comes to GT. I wish it was called something else.
A1 Try to be as inclusive as possible. Don't let the state tests make your decisions for you. https://t.co/RtQnRzFRWs
Emily Pascual! Edtech associate . The last book I read was Euphoria. It's about married and pioneering anthropologists!
Q1: My exper = 1st stand exams, then if you push, alternate measures. Early grades maybe quicker acceptance of alt measures, esp 2E
As an admin in Texas we were a GT school so I had to attend 60 hours of training one summer
Jim, counselor from Texas and soon-to-be OSU dad. "Born To Run" was my last fun book.
a chance to learn. Twitter PD is
A1: Would you push for a retest if shy a couple of points for top 3%... Does it mean that much?
no experience besides the GT program I was in during Elementary. Interested.
A1: Our school went through the latter last year, revamping our GT program
At what grade level are Ss typically "classified" GT?
Stephoni Case jumping in! Southern Nazarene Ed Leadership
A1: the multi-criteria is not state funded, but allows Ss who have a strength in a certain area to excel.
Too often it is like 1st grade. Then they are GT for life.
but when I tell my GT kids they have a meeting to attend, and the look on my other Ss faces. Just hurts me. but I'm soft.
District funding for the student no if they are included in the 8% https://t.co/79y19RHGfV
A1: Would you push for a retest if shy a couple of points for top 3%... Does it mean that much?
John Bennett, Emeritus in Connecticut - joining late. Sorry...
Can be any grade level depends on the school starts testing in K https://t.co/VLVdSRuO4K
At what grade level are Ss typically "classified" GT?
A2: By HS we don't have GT. We have Pre-AP/AP, but those are open enrollment. A few after school clubs... https://t.co/FzfXao7nON
you should research Joseph Renzulli school wide enrichment model then.
In GT, I love the emphasis on creativity & encouragement of that creativity! Would love to see it in all classes!
A1: - Ts & schools need to get out of the box w/ GT on 8% rule- Ss should qualify based on their abilities outside of testing
A2: I know of Elem offerings. not sure at the secondary level. But I like to operate with the thinking that all kids are gifted.
A2 - We are working towards differentiation in every classroom. Students will have the level of instruction they need.
Vanessa Perez, Tech Integration Specialist, just reread Global Frequency
A2: Open enrollment preAP/AP classes.
A1 I don't have experience in this area but I'd love to know more about multi-criteria nomination
The last book I read for fun? Should I limit that to today?! I'm in the middle of 3! I'll go with The Lightning Thief.
A1: totally agree, criterion should be as inclusive as possible & liberally interpreted. Gifted is a lot https://t.co/SkE4fBFkeO
A1 Try to be as inclusive as possible. Don't let the state tests make your decisions for you. https://t.co/RtQnRzFRWs
A2 I wish we had more opportunities. Basically it is up to the T to find things to do.
A1 I believe all kids are gifted in myriad ways & are gifts to the world in ways which may not have been expressed yet.
A1: I think a lot of students are missed if just a test score is used.
Drew price - TBD - checking in late!
A2: I think we only do GT stuff 1-8, then they get dual-credit classes paid for in HS, or something like that. The state funds it!?
I believe the process usually happens most often in elementary. My district begins in 2nd grade.
A2 I have seen some really good GT programs & I have seen GT money used in ways that might be used at some point by GT S's
Does Central still have SAIL?
I'd love to hear your recommendations for including more ELLs in GT. Typically ELLs are under-represented
I guess it seems crazy to me that where a kid is at 7 years old decides if they're "gifted" at 17.
I have similar thoughts, wish we had opportunities for all types of gifted students! https://t.co/W2qWHcVhN2
A1 I believe all kids are gifted in myriad ways & are gifts to the world in ways which may not have been expressed yet.
A1) I have no experience with it. I just wish all Ss could get GT time.
Q2- in practice, 2 strands: enrichment & acceleration.
A1 My children were recommended based on state test, & had to take a second set of tests. Teachers can refer for testing as well.
A2: our primary grades have a special pull out for GT T nominated, after school enrichment STEM and Fine Arts
Drew. Adair. Here's my tardy slip.
Thanks. I definitely don't know enough about it!
I could tell you a way every one of my students are talented or gifted.
I've had many students hate being GT. They were always peer tutors or used as buffers between kids.
Yes, definitely a question I have had as well. The reverse is also true. Test once and not again later...
What about teaching to appreciate the gifts we all have? What if policy grew out of talent development for all?
Pre-Ap and Ap classes, some art and music classes, robotics
it can easily become just another label... Have to work to make that not happen
Depends what area of gift & talent we are looking for. https://t.co/l5EuKIUCkc
I guess it seems crazy to me that where a kid is at 7 years old decides if they're "gifted" at 17.
they take the COGAT in 2nd grade, but can be identified later as well.
True. I always ask mine and let them know they are free to say no.
we don't our after school program from 21st Century has taken priority
Went to high school in NC & OK, NC was more enriching experience by far
But whatever it is, you'd better be manifesting it by 8 yrs old or NO GT FOR YOU! ;-)
A2: We have started some programs within Gr1-8 GT that have now also become clubs after school for all- Botball, chess, debate, etc.
We have a GT grandchild who dies really exciting things. BUT when asked about her day in school, regularly says "Boring"... ???
funding doesn't operate that way and they are actually considered sped. Do not get what they deserve
I agree, kids find areas of talent at many different ages. https://t.co/bHk8jVTfcM
But whatever it is, you'd better be manifesting it by 8 yrs old or NO GT FOR YOU! ;-)
A3: AP classes are usually tight knit. Ss don't want their accommodations bc it separates them from the rest of the class
A3 They often struggle with social issues and have a hard time relating to peers. Got to have a T with a ❤️ for them.
I agree...all kids are gifted and talented in different ways.
Son struggles with rdg but is a star w math.Directions we expect a GT kid to to read can get in the way. https://t.co/gBZLFpfZRz
A2: Just going to say this bc others think it too. Sometimes GT is used 2 separate "the wheat from the chaff" & keep Ps from moving.
Aurora Lora. Assoc. Sup for OKCPS. Checking in late. Last book read for fun? "Me Before You" by JoJo Moyes.
Why can't a spec ed kid be GT? https://t.co/GTx4jy2vMK
funding doesn't operate that way and they are actually considered sped. Do not get what they deserve
If all Ss had access to enrichment opportunities, could they be all be gifted?
makerspace are open to everyone. My HS kids even asked for availability to alt Ed
All I remember about GT when I was in school was that kids who ate paste weren't in it.
A3 - The social or collaborative piece might be missing. It's important that we teach those social and cognative skills.
Some of my most enthusiastic Botball kids are not GT. I'm so glad we do all kids!
A3 These Ss can be overlooked. I have a Sp Ed S who extremely talented in art.
Q3: 2E could be a positive, or increased stress, slow self esteem, resistance to challenge. Same as reg GT label
I forgot about the robotics at IMS LEGO League is awesome and pre- engineering in high school
Wait. So state test scores determine if a S is gifted? Aren't they only designed to determine if students have reached mastery?
A2: I think the focus should be on the talents and academic achievements of all students. Each one is gifted is some way.
Vicky Standridge, ELA teacher & LMS, Happy, Happy, Happy
A2 MPS has a great GT program for elem...wonderful opportunities for enrichment
I promise we are going to circle back to how we identify gifted kids....it is the usual hot button topic.
A2b: If gifted strategies are good for kids, why not use them for all students? Why autonomy for some and scripted work for others?
We didn't have Pre-AP when I was in HS. I was pulled out for GT stuff twice a week - HUGE waste of time. Mostly self-congratulatory.
A3 So I definitely fell in this category...my ADHD made for some interesting challenges for my teachers!
A3: IDK, but I think the GT kids are often those who might become bored (trouble) if not stimulated more outside of the classroom.
I used my Pre-AP strategies with my co-taught class. They all can do it.
Who walks around as an adult and says, "I'm gifted"? Do we graduate out of giftedness? If not, then we need to unschool.
state test scores only qualify a S in 8% MC if the district’s policy allows it
I find gap btw. "willing" and "unwilling" Ss MUCH more important than "gifted" or "regular" https://t.co/T5SOc6hDlo
A2b: If gifted strategies are good for kids, why not use them for all students? Why autonomy for some and scripted work for others?
Ha! I think you just described me as a child... https://t.co/R6dG3uzd1W
A3: IDK, but I think the GT kids are often those who might become bored (trouble) if not stimulated more outside of the classroom.
oh my gosh yes... And you muddle through it bc they got the concepts bc can probably teach it better...
A3 Those students who have learning disabilities are often frustrated because their performance via pencil-paper doesn't match IQ.
Thanks! My tweet finger is too fast for the hashtags sometimes.
Whether or not strats work has little to do with "ability" and much to do with attitude of Ss - ANY level. https://t.co/T5SOc6hDlo
A2b: If gifted strategies are good for kids, why not use them for all students? Why autonomy for some and scripted work for others?
Once did long term sub in Elem GT program...all I could think is this would be great for all kids! Spark their interest and engage!
Kylie Jackson starting my first year in August with Just watching the chat tonight to see some great convo!
This! I think we should be encouraging all Ss to challenge themselves! https://t.co/UsAdFIrqRu
A2b: If gifted strategies are good for kids, why not use them for all students? Why autonomy for some and scripted work for others?
I'm lurking.. watching.. like I said mixed feelings on GT so I'm just staying quiet. :) I'm learning though.
On paper, yes. In reality, gifts and abilities develop in a variety of ways as students mature.
Many schools use the discrepancy model so a gifted math student may have major reading problems or vice versa
Q3: Meaningful instruction and stimulation. Stigma of the label "despite" disability etc.
A3) They are often not recognized because the focus is on the disability.
A4: The only opportunities I know of are in English and Math, where they can skip one grade.
A4: Kids can take honors ELA and Math and skip a grade.
This! Don't all Ss deserve enriching and meaningful experiences. https://t.co/3vaDdGT9qL
A2b: If gifted strategies are good for kids, why not use them for all students? Why autonomy for some and scripted work for others?
you should look into the Joseph Renzulli school wide enrichment model; applies gifted best practices to all students
Unfortunately, some consider language barriers as a disability. Below is a great resource for ELL GTs https://t.co/vsptq4IIds
I had Ss in my AP Computer Science class they were clearly gifted but failing other classes https://t.co/5NplwH0cvS
A3) They are often not recognized because the focus is on the disability.
I have a S blog where I post articles that any S can respond to.I often choose text with a higher lexile. https://t.co/xxxGKg9K4k
A4: HS is a little easier to advance in a certain subject. Middle school can also take higher math and ELA casses. Not sure abt elem
A4 Usually we move them into the upper class regardless of grade. We have experimented with Genius time.
True but they are missing instruction. It was always up to my daughters to be caught up in what was missed https://t.co/L4KCipK65d
Once did long term sub in Elem GT program...all I could think is this would be great for all kids! Spark their interest and engage!
A4: Should it be studying content above their grade level or going deeper into projects?
A4) That is hard to do at the elementary level because each grade level is usually on a completely different schedule.
A4 I also do a lot of self selection of books for projects.Students choose the level and topic.
I'd say motivated vs unmotivated. Especially b/c some of my GT Ss are the most lazy, entitled kids I have. https://t.co/OU2baeWBJs
I find gap btw. "willing" and "unwilling" Ss MUCH more important than "gifted" or "regular" https://t.co/T5SOc6hDlo
A2b: If gifted strategies are good for kids, why not use them for all students? Why autonomy for some and scripted work for others?
A4: Why not eliminate 'grade levels' and let all students into classes they're ready for when that's so??? https://t.co/4UBmqaZKle
Depth of knowledge is very important for the advanced and or GT students https://t.co/kPBzu5QdxT
A4: Should it be studying content above their grade level or going deeper into projects?
yes to both or either depending on what is best for the kid
A4 Will always be advantages and disadvantages. It's a situational decision w/parents and S's.
We pushed for testing in HS & JH last year, partially to capture additional funds. AP classes can be expensive.
A4: elementary is small (most grades have 1 class) so Ts provide enrichment materials within the class for G/T Ss.
A3. One challenge is that some people don't believe Ss with a disability can be gifted. Had a prof at Harvard who was dyslexic...
To me, personalized learning is the future. Moving away from grade levels, etc. https://t.co/zSYsS6Xi0z
A4: Why not eliminate 'grade levels' and let all students into classes they're ready for when that's so??? https://t.co/4UBmqaZKle
A4) We've had a trend of kids graduating early and I'm not fond of it. Some Ss are not emotionally mature enough to move on
A4: AP wants all Ss to have the opportunity to be in AP classes.
A4: Students can/are enrolled in advanced math, ELA, science, and/or social studies. But the teacher decides if content is advanced.
Sometimes they are lazy and unmotivated because they are bored and not engaged https://t.co/JbQIPNrmLB
At , a speaker was from Innovations HS in Utah who got rid of grade levels to great success. Tt takes $ - and we're in OK
A3 To label anybody, especially a child seems wrongheaded to me. There are hardworking but struggling Ss who deserve GT perks!
A1: Historically, minority population has been under-identified for gifted/talented services. Must better serve
all G/T in
A1: Historically, minority population has been under-identified for gifted/talented services. Must better serve
all G/T in
Agreed. Other times, though, they've simply been brought up as special little specials.
A4 I think you can broaden the curriculum at that grade level through research projects without going into the next grade level.
Shouldn't those be the same??? https://t.co/Dk3uNczm5N
A4: Should it be studying content above their grade level or going deeper into projects?
A5 I think my Ts want their Ss to be challenged and look 4 that opportunity. does a great job of this.
A5: I had 35 Ss who took college classes, and over 10 Ss who took Comp I instead of senior English. Let them go to college.
A3.cont. He had to overcome a lot bc people didn't think he was smart. He got a PhD from Harvard and teaches sped law.
A5 again, decisions made based on each kid w/parental/student involvement .
A4a Ss can test to skip a grade,at the elem level that can be tricky...high achievement in accademics & maturity are not the same.
A4: We 2 fear moving an elem. S too fast beyond his developmental comfort zone. Or is it our comfort Zone? https://t.co/tuKtif773Y
A4) That is hard to do at the elementary level because each grade level is usually on a completely different schedule.
A5: I am not a proponent of Ss skipping a grade
Many GT Ss are either socially lagging not advanced in all subjects so skipping a grade not good IMO https://t.co/5m68Omrv44
I'm divided on this. AP has been proven more useful, but it is harder, so Ss do dual credit instead https://t.co/m4F68k8S9P
A5: I had 35 Ss who took college classes, and over 10 Ss who took Comp I instead of senior English. Let them go to college.
For my ds they would be beyond bored w/out above and beyond of their GT. The regular class work not a waste but some need more
It would. But do we want 15 year olds in with 11 year olds?
A4: proficiency tests, and concurrent enrollment
A4b I had first grade kiddos reading at a 5th grade level. I allowed them to read, research, explore on their level.
Lori Wathen, parent Robin Hill School, my child rcvs spec ed svcs, so following to learn about GT.
A5 I do not advocate double promotion. There are too many social skills that are missed and problems can be created by it.
A5 Mixed feelings on this one. I skipped a grade & I was less mature than the other Ss...made MS rough! https://t.co/2zPzFQmq34
I agree but Ts have to teach AP fast paced and those not keeping up can not get As https://t.co/aqlGlRXpFk
A4: AP wants all Ss to have the opportunity to be in AP classes.
A5: I believe it's important to check emotional and social appropriateness as well, really first... https://t.co/yaJ1SSod0w
and I forgot to use on that one. Dang it!
A5: 'Gifted' doesn't equal 'magically knows stuff to which they've never been exposed'. Maybe other options? https://t.co/i92EhgDGTb
ALL Ss need deep, rich, fascinating content & activities. Edu is a partnership, but Ts must inspire & lead.
A5) It is a parent decision with this but sometimes the P sees their S through Rose colored glasses but it's not the right thing
A5: Subject areas might be better. Kids can excel in one are and not be ready to advance in another area.
Robin Rodriquez- 5th & 6th grade Science teacher Washington Elementary, Clinton, OK
Or offer Comp I in the high schools. My 27 AP students should have been in a Comp I class this year.
A4: Wouldn't need GT classes if we placed kids based on ability level & not age. Also new pedagogy based on teaching thinking skills
So true! Loved me some AP history but struggled with basic chemistry! https://t.co/MzDCChkXRd
A5: Subject areas might be better. Kids can excel in one are and not be ready to advance in another area.
A6: I have had many students do the Duke/TIP program and they saw huge benefits.
I've got to bail out early. Thanks for moderating, you're doing a great job! I read the tweets later! Until next time
A6: Love it! Then they can see where they need to focus- and show off what they know. Who pays? https://t.co/SXRzdqnaU5
Could this be because Identification is based or norm referenced tests designed for the majority https://t.co/6UyJ4RuDim
A1: Historically, minority population has been under-identified for gifted/talented services. Must better serve
all G/T in
A6: It has spammed my daughter with college mail since 8th grade ;)
A5 In most cases I am strongly against grade adjustment.
The other issue is whether they are ready in all sub. They may already struggle socially,1hard subject may be too much.
no, there is actually a number of different accepted definitions but none use magic :)
A6: Pros are practice and possibly confidence and cons are cost and possible discouragement .
On the other hand, if they WERE magic, that SHOULD qualify as "gifted" :-)
I tell parents only true perk I see (unless willing to pay $$ for Duke camps) is the experience https://t.co/h1qrWigb7Z
I had several students that are very talented but make A's and B's so didn't make the cut into GT. They're artists tho. True talent
A6 Are the norms adjusted for a student who hasn't had all those science and upper math courses? If not, I would not be in favor,.
A6) It gives the Ss of what they are expected to have mastery of. That could be a pro or con depending on how the Ss reacts.
True, but AP teaches all the same skills plus some. My school loses a lot of good Ss who want the easier option.
A7 Depends on the S, some kiddos are driven and challenged by these opportunities. I however did not have my own daughter take it.
A4. As a principal of a 6-12 school, we allowed MS students to take HS courses for credit if they could keep up academically.
A6: Might be good to emphasize to Ss that high scores mean little w/o work ethic / application. https://t.co/h1EtaR8J7A
Nice! I wish more would do that!
A6 We provide opportunity and info to Ps of Ss who qualify. Final decision to test is up to Ps.
This is one of the things I like. It opens their eyes to college possibilities beyond the great state of https://t.co/HXMGrKoDiy
A6: It has spammed my daughter with college mail since 8th grade ;)
A6 the experience of taking it early is definitely a pro, but how do Ss with lower SES pay for taking it numerous times??
Only issue is when parents place Ss in these classes and expect kids to make an A https://t.co/ZuUsgbdlyG
A4. As a principal of a 6-12 school, we allowed MS students to take HS courses for credit if they could keep up academically.
A6) I did that. Cons- Honestly I don't have any. Pros- it started me on a path that let me earn a full ride scholarship to college.
Angela Little | Edmond Public School Parent | Business Analyst @ AFA | Pub Ed Advocate I didn't realize it was already 8pm!!
A7: It depends on the maturity of the student and how the test results are used by the school, the student, and the parents.
My son was NHS pres, Class pres, GT, Whose who, All of that. I supported him. He is now at OU. but as a T I get sad w/the labels.
A6: I would encourage my own kids if they weren't so over tested as it is.
Why can't this be true for every teacher teaching every kid every day? Kids love intellectual respect! https://t.co/ODDiUiDbiq
A7: That's what GT programs are for! To take these kids and give them opportunities to "play" with others their age who are similar
A7: I don't see it as advocating for them - it's just recognizing their maturity level, or lack thereof. https://t.co/b3fmOulqT7
I love your way with words! That's very true.
And if straight A's is what we are all about, we have bigger problems. https://t.co/Zw8xOssKvp
If only the kids that have straight A's get to be in GT, call it Advanced Academics or something. Talent doesn't equal Straight A's always.
A7 Find their interests and let them do independent projects instead of the grade level stuff they already know. Replace the grade.
I agree completely. And the skilled teachers DO look 4 ways to challenge all Ss.
A7: I try to build creative projects in even in AP classes. They're still HS kids.
we have advocated Individual Ed plans for some but I am not sure all Ss do not need an IEP in some form https://t.co/GXfrZWEwWD
A7 This is why social, emotional, soulful, & academic learning should be valued & developed equally. https://t.co/KygicZtzJ3
My dad skipped grades and decided because of his experience, he would not let us. I skipped a class, and to this day regret it.
A7: Have a group passion project for those Ss
For question 7 background, I encourage you to sometime go to the page for social emotional needs of Gifted https://t.co/ygHf9CSqQh
A7) Finding out what these interests are and doing your best to nurture those. Could have a group of Ss with common interests.
Biggest reason I have 7th graders willing to ride a bus an hour and a half early once a week https://t.co/XMCck7YZFw
A7: That's what GT programs are for! To take these kids and give them opportunities to "play" with others their age who are similar
People are all for SPED, but they have a problem when other kids get similar treatment. Is it just the title? GT becomes ???
If Ss of ANY level can skip a year w/o missing anything important, something fundamental is already very, very wrong.
Want an extra $2,000 in your Sept paycheck? Come teach one of these subjects for Enid Schools! https://t.co/V8jT6vuDSf
I love concurrent enrollment for high school. The best of both worlds! A kind of supported college experience.
Problem is many Ps are more concerned about the "A" valedictorian and GPA then what their Ss are learning https://t.co/9WQ0mD8lGY
And if straight A's is what we are all about, we have bigger problems. https://t.co/Zw8xOssKvp
If only the kids that have straight A's get to be in GT, call it Advanced Academics or something. Talent doesn't equal Straight A's always.
A6: Sorry, not convinced taking such tests really gives much of value in terms of potential... https://t.co/6sRS2WlEaM
A7: I'm not sure way ahead of their peers is correct... Different than their peers.
unfortunately those in poverty look at the short term, not long term...but maybe that's the mindset we have to change
And to complete the triangle of great teaching for every child... Beyond, below the surface, & back inward. https://t.co/zE8kFGlwUb
Like him or not, Alfie Kohn will cause you to think. Here is what he says about GT programs & privileged Ps. https://t.co/CPbtLcZxTh
Can I RT this every hour on the hour for about a year? https://t.co/D8TPjimNca

20 minutes away. A follow-up.
I don't want it to seem we are pinning one student against another based off of performance. Ha! I'm such a lib.
A7 I just hope these GT's have been involved in out of school activities to help develop social skills. Schools can't do it all.
A7: Always good for older student to mentor the younger student intellectually while respecting his youth. https://t.co/zSDbKxLjiy
Maybe not, but the practice was invaluable for me as the one taking it.
Not sure with the new math ELA standards that skipping classes like 7th grade math for Alg 1 might not be a good idea anymore.
Does "advancement" =more of the same-worksheets/Tr/Sch driven or developing curiosity, how todevelop own theories & follow through?
Agreed. The value of AP is much greater than the "A", but until we change the mindset, many will opt out. https://t.co/EaD7LzEakb

please forgive the typo on Q8 :)
Norm-ref test is most common method, BUT schools could identify G/T "through multi-criteria nomination" too. https://t.co/WrGwjlAjLr
Could this be because Identification is based or norm referenced tests designed for the majority https://t.co/6UyJ4RuDim
A1: Historically, minority population has been under-identified for gifted/talented services. Must better serve
all G/T in
I hope if you went in with research, examples, and T and Admin support, the local boards would be receptive. https://t.co/N9Il2lAj7O
Differentiation is necessary all levels.Yes some go unidentified just like in sped and we accommodate https://t.co/RlJy46qsKI
People are all for SPED, but they have a problem when other kids get similar treatment. Is it just the title? GT becomes ???
A8: I need to work on this at my school. I am all about fine arts being included in criteria. That will be a mission of mine.
Well, it does mean you're on probation for staying in GT... https://t.co/d14zJWgHNt
please forgive the typo on Q8 :)
A8, p2. Also have a plan. Explain how you will provide for those students.
then drop the mic, my mission for chat leader has been met!
A8: Step 1: Wait until OK gets its coffers in order...
Man I planned on joining in the chat tonight! I'll set an alarm for next week!
A8: I don't think Admin and Ts are the toughest audience to sell. Parents would give the strongest push back. Would be tough battle.
I had a S over to my house one day. She went outside and using chalk turned my patio into a mural of horses. That is talent!
Based on present actions, we need to leave a note with instructions for Captain Piccard.
Same. https://t.co/Vyj63Cwym8
I'm lurking.. watching.. like I said mixed feelings on GT so I'm just staying quiet. :) I'm learning though.
Rules, so many rules we must live by!! :) Yes, carefully chosen & parent-vetted mentors, of course!
(Or science!) https://t.co/t5fZLCzffA
Not sure with the new math ELA standards that skipping classes like 7th grade math for Alg 1 might not be a good idea anymore.
A8 Thankful IPS already has policy and opportunity, just want to keep them. We must keep funding for public Ed.
It's the one alarm I didn't turn off for the summer!
Good point. But even the note might disappear into the ether if it looks valuable!
Q9 Robert J. Sternberg is a GT researcher & pioneer in teaching wisdom. In light of all the hate & violence now, your thoughts?
I'm feeling very un-GT right now. Could you re-phrase the question? https://t.co/SUPcpB2Jz2
Q9 Robert J. Sternberg is a GT researcher & pioneer in teaching wisdom. In light of all the hate & violence now, your thoughts?
An earlier reflection on giftedness I wrote in English Journal Sept 2015
How shall I put this... "Um... Huh?!" https://t.co/qrS7gsNoao
Q9 Robert J. Sternberg is a GT researcher & pioneer in teaching wisdom. In light of all the hate & violence now, your thoughts?
GT students get money based on their classification. They deserve to see the fruits of that funding. Removing label removes funding.
Good point on new standards! Wish for an easier structure to eliminate some seat time for quick learners. https://t.co/qKeVOyhXqJ
Not sure with the new math ELA standards that skipping classes like 7th grade math for Alg 1 might not be a good idea anymore.
Great Q. I'd like to see a day when FA kids are still in valedictorian running; the 5.0 scale penalizes them. https://t.co/x8EJCZaZSi
A9 I'm all for wisdom...not just among the GT but all students!
Q9 REDUX Sternberg believes wisdom is an ability that absolutely can be systematically developed ...others actually do not.
A8) I'm fortunate because I'm included on my GT committee. Showing how these help students advance is a great way of advocating.
Maybe a structure for moving up when you've demonstrated mastery, not just at the BOY.
I think some Ss just haven't met the right adult yet to encourage success from them. If they ever do find their person, watch out.
A9. There has to be way to turn our society away from violence as an answer, is developing wisdom a path?
A9 That's the purpose of education, isn't it?
Shouldn't a FA kid who receives an honor like All-State band be allowed to count band as a 5.0 class? https://t.co/tz0OSLr6rh
Great Q. I'd like to see a day when FA kids are still in valedictorian running; the 5.0 scale penalizes them. https://t.co/x8EJCZaZSi
A9: Of course developing wisdom is a path, more of many
A9: We can hope to develop perspective, and knowledge - maybe even empathy. Wisdom... https://t.co/oUMrzYeKc5
A9. There has to be way to turn our society away from violence as an answer, is developing wisdom a path?
And all students will truly rise to the occasion if you give them the skills, strategies, support, & belief. https://t.co/42ZQrnAEdR
A9 I'm all for wisdom...not just among the GT but all students!
Wisdom is nurtured, grows with experience, and the opportunity to think about and discuss choices...
A9) Wisdom is valuable to all Ss and studying great leaders and their lives can help attain it.
A9: Wisdom could probably be taught (like monks do) but it often involves a lot of trial and error - learning from mistakes
A9) I don't know about wisdom, but values. Oddly, hard work is a value many GT Ss struggle with because so much is easy for them.
A9 a word class education fixes many problems we face in life.
I get more excited over the Ss that show growth. Taking someone off of read intervention bc the need isn't there anymore.
A9: Violence tends to correlate w/ ignorance and fear. THAT we can certainly fight to the last. https://t.co/oUMrzYeKc5
A9. There has to be way to turn our society away from violence as an answer, is developing wisdom a path?
A9: Hell, at this point I'd settle for some common decency and compassion for other human beings. Wisdom can come later...
A9 Knowledge and experiences make us all wiser but there will always be good and evil. Put God first
Hmmmm sounds a little bit like a growth mindset.
I so agree, Kimberly! That person must be every teacher they ever have. All kids deserve no less. https://t.co/e6iXPFUc5u
I think some Ss just haven't met the right adult yet to encourage success from them. If they ever do find their person, watch out.
A9b: Compassion can be taught, wisdom is usually gained... Both lead to happier communities
I hope this will be one path to avoiding violence but after last night's tragic hate crime, just not sure https://t.co/Aj3oDjZugl
A9. There has to be way to turn our society away from violence as an answer, is developing wisdom a path?
A consequence of trying to "unpenalize" kids who took advanced classes. Very frustrating.
A9 Unfortunately, we do not control all the variables in this world. All the education cannot control angry misguided people.
Absolutely this is a place many need support! Just like all other Ed...differentiating based on needs! https://t.co/yFCgJCImj3
A9) I don't know about wisdom, but values. Oddly, hard work is a value many GT Ss struggle with because so much is easy for them.
I love all my students. Obviously. but give me the "lower" ones all day long. We are going to grow together. :)
Absolutely! Teach growth mindsets and we'll achieve our goals!
Don't look at me. I've always opposed the 5.0 scale. It encourages all kinds of bad decisions.
A9 Teaching wisdom IS the answer, but I don't think that is in The Standards!
1 Dark side of advances in Tech & Social Media, more hate seen and acted upon. Education critical. https://t.co/n85FlHZTMw
A9. There has to be way to turn our society away from violence as an answer, is developing wisdom a path?
It's my goal to be this person for as many Ss as possible!! https://t.co/1qo76RBVdb
I think some Ss just haven't met the right adult yet to encourage success from them. If they ever do find their person, watch out.
Agreed, but many of the emotions and support systems behind violence are 'balanced' by good education. https://t.co/czMOShuHcB
A9 Unfortunately, we do not control all the variables in this world. All the education cannot control angry misguided people.
final comment, please make sure we are giving as much differentiation to the right of the bell curve as we do the middle & left. Thx
& lack of respect for 1 another. Ppl who don't feel it don't give it, so schools really should wk on climate https://t.co/DxSj8m4sQW
A9: Violence tends to correlate w/ ignorance and fear. THAT we can certainly fight to the last. https://t.co/oUMrzYeKc5
A9. There has to be way to turn our society away from violence as an answer, is developing wisdom a path?
A9 we can teach gratitude & social skills everyday as an embedded piece of everything we already do.
I think GT (all)kids struggle w/ "easiness" & challenge bc school doesn't offer space to develop deep interests & enduring passions
Thank you Such a great chat! Always helpful to KNOW more.
I know we're still going, but thanks to for stretching a bit and making it hard to respond in the same old cliches.
Now I'm curious. How would you prevent kids from being penalized for taking harder classes?
Taught gifted/talented Ed at McKinley School for Tulsa. Main focus was teaching students to character traits such as compassion
The value added occurs when sch offers a space of listening, broadening, friendships, exploration, caring adult mentors
