Question 1 is up on deck; let’s chat!
Welcome! First timer! :) I'm a former MO'ian.
For the next 50 minutes, we want to look at design thinking, makerspaces & deep learning as they relate to gifted education.
Well I look forward to continuing this convo with you! I agree.
A1) Design thinking is a way of thinking... common steps are Define, Empathy, Ideate, Prototype, Test <--Iteration is key!
A1) I think of DT as a process; a ‘way of thinking’. It enables you to face and answer challenges.
I'm Kelly-mother, teacher, blogger & homeschooling mama to my 2e DS10 almost 11
A1) In light of recent events, the need to teach Empathy as never been greater.
A1) originated from the idea that we must know our users when we create for them - excellent way to get kids thinking about others!
A1) Several chat participants have pointed to DT for years; finally sunk in what a ‘good fit’ it is for gifted ed.
I cannot agree more. Empathy is the key to our kids knowing, loving, and being able to change the world.
It will also help them face greater & greater complex issues!
Plus, many GT/2E kids see the world in more intricate ways than most of us ever will. https://t.co/E9ap1GszC4
It will also help them face greater & greater complex issues!
Q2) What resources are needed & do educators need specific PD to implement design thinking? https://t.co/jMM9ynInOQ
Hi Jerry! How are you? Happy to see you here tonight. :)
A1) I have always subscribed to the idea of "talk less, listen more". Design Thinking follows this ideal.
Thank you so much for this resource! It is much need today!
A2) Resources? You can find them free online. Think of the steps as a structure and make it work for your classroom.
A2 - If by PD you mean more chats like this, then yes. As soon as PD becomes programmatic, it becomes problematic.
That's a great way to look at it. Have endured many less than productive PD sessions.
A2) I think PD is essential for any new curriculum or teaching strategy
A2 - I have so many tabs open on my browser w/ the wealth of PD people are sharing. This is real PD, because I chose it and own it.
A2 I invited an engineering student from the university to come talk to my class. I learned as much as the Ss!
Yes- form a group of teachers to try it with, share ideas, support each other. Read a guide together.
A2) Resources are important, but it is more a mindset to reimagine how we view education.
So important for educators to accept their Ss as potential teachers at times. https://t.co/Ag17BxxPs4
A2 I invited an engineering student from the university to come talk to my class. I learned as much as the Ss!
Yep - We struggle to keep learning and teaching organic, in world that's trying to modify/engineer learning https://t.co/W26G25IAkZ
this is grass roots at its finest. I worry about a top-down approach to . It’s the antithesis.
Jumping in a bit late - Diana, Curr. Dir./ Principal - IL - gifted advisory council member to IL Board of ed
like and , needs to be valued and believed. It has to be the fabric of a teacher’s pedagogy.

this is grass roots at its finest. I worry about a top-down approach to . It’s the antithesis.
give me her/his email or Twitter handle!
A2) I made Design Thinking cards (Book characters) for kids to learn DT with, works great for teachers too. https://t.co/HH2v0V0JtU
Will have to read the chats later. Having an allergic reaction and need to go get some medicine. Crazyness.
Take care, Faith! https://t.co/5kqnPGbI7f
Will have to read the chats later. Having an allergic reaction and need to go get some medicine. Crazyness.
Sorry to hear! We'll post transcripts later today & blog post in a couple days. Feel better.
DT is new to me. Not sure what the empathy part is. Is it the same as understanding your "audience"?
Loving your “rants” about commodifying and the . It’s a way of being, not an industry. https://t.co/ntk78vp0CO

A3) DT challenges are open-ended format that work well for events & competitions.
A3) There are also projects - lesson-based ways to explore design thinking in the classroom.
A3) Design Challenges can be as quick as, design boat with a piece of paper that will hold as many paperclip passengers as possible.
We’re already half way through our chat! Thanks for all the great sharing.
A3) DT can be as complex as, design and build an invention to improve the campus recycling issue.
Wow. This process is fascinating. Have to go meet a client. Hope you see you all in 2 weeks!
A3) The beauty? No limits in DT, it's open ended and INVITES kids to imagine, create, explore. Things deep-thinkers LOVE!
I coached Odyssey as well - reminds me of balsa wood! :) https://t.co/87RmzhE4X1
I coached Odyssey of the Mind and Design Thinking reminds me a lot of that competition. Many similar elements

Oops. I mean, hope to see you all in 2 weeks. Typing too fast!
Thanks for joining us, Paula. See you in a couple weeks to chat about Your Rainforest Mind from !
A3) Just don't think of Design Thinking as "one more thing to do. It's oven to bake the learning in. Tastes better than microwave!
A4) As a pedagogy directed at creating innovation, it can be integrated into pull-outs, stand-alones as well as independent studies.
A4) Design Thinking is totally natural fit in gifted ed. Process is emphasized, along with creativity, and thinking outside the box.
A3) I'm seeing correlation between Problem-Based Learning & Design Thinking. Love that Ss have a voice. Promotes student buy-in.
A4) DT challenges speak to the academic mindset & initiated in multi-age, cross curricular environments.
A4) Great about Design Thinking is differentiation happens authetnically - kids can dig as deep as they want..or we can inspire!
Absolutely - and you can pick parts of each and create what works for your kids!
Love this! https://t.co/hPQbUw4nto
Oh, Most definitely! Our gifted resource classes use DT methods for units and also mini units. Our students love it!
Is anyone doing a session at on DT?
A4) Design Thinking breaks down the walls of perfectionism. You aren't worried about being right if iteration is encouraged.
A3 - The design challenges my teammates and I create stem from our science curriculum. They tell a story. https://t.co/vaIAMGinul
breaking down walls of perfectionism - great for those GT students who tend toward that way and will not try if not
Haven't seen the list yet. Sadly, I won't be there this year. May still have a cyber-presence thought! ;)
Absolutely. Knowing that mistakes are expected is empowering to some kiddos!
And even though everything is not a right answer, there are very few wrong answers. https://t.co/2aOHmrZA32
A3) The beauty? No limits in DT, it's open ended and INVITES kids to imagine, create, explore. Things deep-thinkers LOVE!
A4) 3 Cs of gifted makerspaces: Community,Challenge,Competition like MSUGT EinsteinHour Su’16 https://t.co/T5d1AxGZWq
Thanks for joining us! https://t.co/TvZRuEffSA
Sorry, but I have to sign off. Up early to play with my GT kids at Summer Camp. Will check out the rest of the chat later.
Looking 4 evidence/research on ++ any will do but recent better
So true - that's what I love. I may have been "wrong" but it led me someplace new... better. Opens doors!
Launch: Using Design Thinking to Boost Creativity & Bring Out the Maker in Every Student (Amazon) https://t.co/V6fWfW9Rlx
Q4) DT encourages cognitive risk-taking & teaches Ss to manage the nebulous issues. Builds real-world "soft skills".
A4 - , like and must be a part of GT learning.
A5) Design Thinking is all about the process, interating, prototyping... maker mindset galore! Joy and play belong, too!
A5) Design Thinking serves as a catalyst to making; a framework to understanding the process of making.
Read this book this week - a great, simple and practical book that makes you think deep... https://t.co/1llZdQfuTE

A4 - Just like we can’t say, “It’s math time”, we can’t say it’s time.” It needs to be all day, every day.
Yep- because without them, you're not making the pool deep enough for kids to practice swimming and diving.
A5: seems to go along with the current reading on
Excellent! https://t.co/EOop1MyBfq
A4 - Just like we can’t say, “It’s math time”, we can’t say it’s time.” It needs to be all day, every day.
. You convinced me! Moving from wish list to cart now :)
Love your metaphors! https://t.co/sq4qisWpuU
Yep- because without them, you're not making the pool deep enough for kids to practice swimming and diving.
RT . You convinced me! Moving from wish list to cart now :)
Gosh, yes. I love this point. It's not something we do, it's a way.
A5 - It has to be as much (or more) about the process, and not the product.
Maker mindset BELONGS in gifted programs. G/T programs need to be the MOST INNOVATIVE places on campus.
We could package all those words into one…LEARNING! https://t.co/uG3FUW585z
A5) Design Thinking is all about the process, interating, prototyping... maker mindset galore! Joy and play belong, too!
Too many kids are starving for creativity like little birds with their mouths open.. waiting. It's time to FEED them.
A5) I've loved seeing how all these new ways of learning are coming together!
Final question coming up!
Q6) How does design thinking affect deeper learning; a much desired requisite for gifted education? https://t.co/35Oo6mPnKT
exactly what is needed - all of these new ideas, can give gifted ed a much need refresh and update! https://t.co/Qlcwz2mFLU
A5) I've loved seeing how all these new ways of learning are coming together!
A6) Deeper Learning is a mix of knowledge; critical thinking, problem solving, & communication skills.
RT A6) Deeper Learning is a mix of knowledge; critical thinking, problem solving, & communication skills.
A6) Design Thinking facilitates learning how to learn; an intricate part of deeper learning
A6) When it comes to design, there are no ceilings on your thinking. Afterall, there are footprints on the moon...
And one day on Mars if they approach it with DT!
A6) Kids deserve chance to stretch their thinking, think til' their brain is tired from thinking, but can't wait to think more.
A6 - When the process is stressed & not the outcome, time slows down. Learning becomes deeper by default. Learning is owned.
We’re nearing the end of today … final thoughts/takeaways?
This will be archived at & the link will be shared via later today
Yep-- totally true... and sad!
Thanks to the extraordinary staff at for their awesome support; we couldn’t do it without them!
this is exactly how & are approaching economics & sustainability.
Design thinking reminds me of CPS (creative problem solving) Am I off here?
Thanks to the Advisory Board:
Thanks for all the great resources and ideas!
Final thought? If you decide to embrace design thinking... you have students that will thank you for it.
all learners (teachers included) should be tired after a day of deep learning.
Thank you to Krissy for being our guest today!
Be sure to follow some of the new friends you met here today at to continue the convo!
Our next chat will be on Tues June 21st at 8E/7C/6M/5P (US)/Wed 22nd June at 1AM (UK)/12.00 NZST/10.00 AEST
