John from @ThorntonAcademy in Saco, ME. I teach 9th grade Peoples & World Cultures and 10th grade America's Response to a Changing World. #worldgeochat
Thanks again for introducing me to #globaledchat last week. It was very helpful. Do you know what they are doing on Thursday? I couldn't find anything. #worldgeochat
Hello! Krista joining in from Iowa. I taught Global Studies, but this year I am a mentor for new teachers. Looking forward to traveling around the world! #worldgeochat
A1: Europe is great to explore effects of population density, the EU, and currency (since most are on the Euro). It's a great opportunity to explore the past and the influence of "western civilization" #worldgeochat
1A right now they hafta get familiar with the ins and outs of the EU, regardless of whether it grows/declines or breaks up. 1B they wanna know so much about hitler for some reason #worldgeochat
#worldgeochat A1 My favorite part of teaching the history of Europe is the Enlightenment. Enjoy teaching Ss about the philosophies of Locke, Rousseau, Montesquieu and Voltaire and how their ideas influenced our rights and government structure today.
A1a) I usually examine social support systems in Europe with my students and compare to the United States. They are always surprised about healthcare and the length of maternity/PATERNITY leave. #worldgeochat
I teach medieval/Renaissance. I want my students to understand/analyze how the fall of Western Rome shaped the subsequent eras, as well as how geography played a role. #worldgeochat
A1b
The quirky things - all the sports that exist that we know nothing about - hurling, human tower, and calcio storico. #worldgeochathttps://t.co/ZUZi1kXsAW
A1 #worldgeochat
Read Prisoners of Geography
Human Geo
Why was the UN formed?
What is the EU? How does it work?
Is Russia European or Asian?
The German economic engine
Physical Geo
The land of peninsulas
Trade and rivers
The northern European plain
My student teaching was ancient Rome, and my time with the unit was definitely not enough. Exactly as you stated, I wanted them to see how Rome shaped the western world and its influences to now #worldgeochat
Nope. Its so hard to find resources that explain what it really is to Ss. The EU press office shares a lot of resources, but they all go over my Ss heads. #worldgeochat
A1a) I like using this https://t.co/NP0NY2figk
from the EU's official website. It helps students understand how many different issues the EU is involved with and that it goes beyond an economic partnership. #worldgeochat
A2B: Students are definitely interested in Paris, for some reason. Not sure why SPECIFICALLY that city, but anytime I ask students where they want to travel to, they all say PARIS! #worldgeochat
If you know of great Europe resources, let me know! I would like to expand that section of Globe to Go (https://t.co/yN5uTNDjag), Europe is probably the one I struggle with the most. #worldgeochat
A2A: Another great region for population density and how it affects human civilizations. Buddhism is continuing to spread, so I feel it necessary Ss know different religious aspects. Islam is not only in the Middle East, it's spread to other nations around the world #worldgeochat
Oh trust me, I fell in love with the city more than I thought I would. But you're right. The city is highlighted in many books and movies #worldgeochat
A2 60% of all humans alive today live in Asia. If you have 35 students in a classroom, 21 would represent the population of Asia. 3 would represent the population of North America. https://t.co/SFSKxZNuh1#worldgeochat
A1: If you ask me..everything:Physical and Human Systems. Specifically: EU, Refugee Situation,Catalan,Brexit, Popularity of Soccer and it’s infleunce on the #cultural landscape #worldgeochat
A3a: Again, I'll go with the diversity of the region. Not all of these people are the same. And how Europeans lumping them together in odd groups has lead to all sorts of problems. #worldgeochat
1a. I think the reasons behind the EU and in general the philosophy of free trade, free travel and one currency. 1b. Maps of lands that European countries have invaded/colonized. #worldgeochat
What if there was some sort of Google Form that people could dump resources into? We would fill out what it was, where it applied to, Twitter handle so people could ask Qs. #worldgeochat
In reply to
@SamMandeville, @cheffernan75, @GeoSpiegs
A2b) Japanese culture is fascinating to students like the practice of bowing and wearing a mask if you are ill out of politeness to not get others sick. #worldgeochat
3A I think this has been mentioned in other chats previously, but they better come to an understanding that not everyone that lives there is a terrorist. Sad they we still have to have that discussion though #worldgeochat
#worldgeochat A3 The importance of the 3 major monotheistic religions and their claim to the lands. The issue of Jerusalem and the US Embassy has caused problems between the groups in Bethlehem ahead of Christmas.
A3b #worldgeochat
Using googleearthengine time lapse to watch islands grow out of the Persian Gulf.
20% of the world’s oil supply passes through the Strait of Hormuz every day.
#worldgeochat A3 We will be Hanging out with @galilevari 2-3 Grade class in Tel Aviv in January. Looking forward to sharing our culture with each other.
My goal is to help students analyze the Judeo-Christian connections to Islam, how cultures shift over time, and the area as a crossroads. #worldgeochat
A3A: Fossil Fuels, Water/lack thereof, Desalination efforts, Economic development of region, Religions, gender roles, 21st C conflict and actors like ISIS #worldgeochat
A3a) Understanding the beliefs of Islam and the impact in the region and in the rest of the world. Great 30 Days episode about Islam! https://t.co/ACkcTwSAFD
Also, understanding that there are large cities in the Middle East, not just desert.
#worldgeochat
A4a: Similar to the Middle East, not all people are poor in Africa. This year, I want to explore a little more of the "Scramble for Africa" so Ss have a little more understanding of the continent's past. #worldgeochat
A4 Every human alive today is descended from an African woman who lived about 200,000 years ago. In a very real sense, each of us is African. #worldgeochat
A4a
I need Ss to know the impact of Colonialism on Africa. The impact that European governments had on Africa is impossible to overstate. #worldgeochat
A3B: Similarities of the Abrahamic faiths. The diffusion of Western culture to the region. How economically developed many countries are. #worldgeochat
This is what I need to explore a little more. We were looking at Mali's currency, which is Francs, and my students were asking why they had a French currency #worldgeochat
My students this year were shocked to learn about the kingdoms of Ghana, Mali, and Songhai. They had never really studied Africa other than colonialism/slavery. (Which is a huge disservice to their education). #worldgeochat
A4a There is so much Ss do not know about Africa! Let's start with the fact it is NOT a country. It is full of rich diversity in geography and culture. #worldgeochat
A3 Our explorer AzizAbuSarah shared a series of terrific edu videos. Use them! They're a great primer on how Israelis and Palestinians are living. #worldgeochathttps://t.co/JQsUGG0NA5
A4 For geo, should know Africa's rich diversity, both culturally & physical geography. Of course, that probably goes for every continent :) #worldgeochat
I always talk about the Berlin Conference of 1881 as the underlying root cause of modern borders.
French West Africa
British Cape to Cairo
Belgian Congo
#worldgeochat
This is a problem everywhere. Ancient cultures apparently means Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, Rome, Middle Ages. Ancient American & African civilizations apparently don't make the cut. #worldgeochat
In a very real sense, white Americans are not at all. Let's not essentialize, erase, or ignore race as not a biological reality but a social construction. Colorblindness (were all African) is racism. #worldgeochat
A3: I met a man from Kuwait last night at...get this...The Broadmoor Hotel! He said he had a farm in Kuwait. Made me wonder what other surprises the Middle East might hold for me. #worldgeochat
A4b: The Fashoda incident is fun to teach about. Leopoldo II, not so fun, but freakishly important. Ss are always shocked they never heard of him before. #worldgeochat
A5a: I guess lots of these questions do come down to breaking stereotypes. Deforestation and the Amazon River Basin/importance of resources #worldgeochat
A4 I think we'll all be watching those beautiful Nigerian bobsledders when they compete in the Olympics in February. First Nigerian team in the winter games ever—talk about subverting the dominant narrative. Love that story. #worldgeochat
Right, that's genetics. Not culture. Historians are, in fact, deeply invested in difference as meaningful. Of course biological race does not exist. But race as a social construct does. Colorblindness is racism. #worldgeochat
#worldgeochat A5 We have had a migration of Ss from Mexico and EL Salvador. A focus on those cultures would help other Ss understand there way of life.

I loved sharing stories from my time in Colombia. We don't think about the fact that they just ended a 5 decade war. It definitely has an impact on them still.
#worldgeochat
Again, I do not want to be misunderstood: I am saying that the social construction of race matters, and it matters that we (meaning anti-racist educators) teach that difference. #worldgeochat
A5 This could, again, apply to all regions, but in this region I'm particularly interested in human-geo interaction & its impact on eco-system & culture when it comes to tourism & the deforestation & its impact on locals by doing it or not #worldgeochat

A6a
I don't do much with US & Canada, but I spend time trying to explain that, YES, Canada is similar to USA, but there are a LOT of differences! #worldgeochat
When colorblindness is used by whites to say that we should do nothing to eliminate to legal and cultural inequalities we've created in society, I oppose it. What I have said is not that. #worldgeochat
A5a I know I tend to lean towards historical references but how about the impact of the Treaty of Tordesillas? It's why they speak Portuguese in Brazil and Spanish most everywhere else. #worldgeochat
#worldgeochat A6 One of our focus is going to be local history. @1988project will be working with Ss on writing about the local history of Monon. We tend to focus on the national history but forget about local. Great opportunity for our students to involved in the community.
A6a: I would question just how familiar kids are with their own backyard. Maybe make them investigate their local history and see how it plays into the larger history of the nation(s). #worldgeochat

A6 the anti map memory contingent on here might freak, but mental mapping! When ignored, they end up thinking the capital is in the PNE and don’t understand the Raptors and Blue Jays are from a whole different country #worldgeochat
A6 north America is my intro unit to learn five themes, basic physical and human geo features because it is familiar. USA is good study of how physical regions develop different based on resources available.
6b love looking at ethnic neighborhoods in NYC
#worldgeochat
A6) I try to focus more on non-western countries, but when I teach about culture I like to focus on dialects in the English language.
Awesome video about Harvard study of dialects in the US!
Watch “SODA / POP / COKE” on #Vimeohttps://t.co/bdAgkyNKjT#worldgeochat
No, it doesn't invalidate that history; but it does eliminate the basis that whites (primarily) used to create that history. Until we as a culture can agree on that, there is no way to overcome that history. #worldgeochat
RT JohnHRaby: A6a: I would question just how familiar kids are with their own backyard. Maybe make them investigate their local history and see how it plays into the larger history of the nation(s). #worldgeochat
My student teaching was out in Shelburne Falls, MA. We did a major day trip to Boston, and it was a first for the majority of my students #eyeopening#worldgeochat
The racism that I abhor as much as you do, is rooted in perceived biological reality. Until racists can come to understand the unreality of those beliefs, they will never change. #worldgeochat
I think as Ts we forget that some of our Ss don't get the opportunity to explore the world around them. And that creates issues for us as a society, not just in our classes. #worldgeochat
Looks like I'm going to have to check out the #worldgeochat archives tonight. Getting pulled in too many different directions around here. See you next week!
As the hour comes to a close, we still don't have a clue as to who wins the Senate seat in Alabama.
We do know that next week is the last #worldgeochat of 2017! Next week we give #worldgeochat gifts!
