Ok lets get started... Q1: All I hear about is how bad homework is for students. Do you think it is bad for students? #vachat

    In reply to @philgriffins, @ErinWest_ITRT
  • mcarlson110 Apr 3 @ 8:09 PM EDT
A1: I follow the research. In elem. grades, hw is not supported. I want my Ss to play and read a book. #vachat
  • ErinWest_ITRT Apr 3 @ 8:10 PM EDT
    Join #vachat tonight folks. We're talking homework & I KNOW you've got some feelings on this @AJ_ITRT @jzicari_ITRT @br3ndaconway @MrDeSando
  • L_Roadcap Apr 3 @ 8:11 PM EDT
#vachat A1: If HW has an instructional value (remediation, extension, etc..) then HW is not bad - its how you structure the HW.
  • EspoLearns Apr 3 @ 8:11 PM EDT
A1: In elem, often requires parental support and effort. Not every S has that at home. Sets up negative feelings re: school. #vachat
  • mrwilliamsworld Apr 3 @ 8:11 PM EDT
#vachat A1: HW is not bad. How we have misused it has been. We need to rethink it and be wiser in how we give it and evaluate it
    In reply to @philgriffins
  • dawnkingCCPS Apr 3 @ 8:11 PM EDT
A1: I do not think all homework is bad for students. I like for students to read and even practice a little math. #vachat
  • philgriffins Apr 3 @ 8:11 PM EDT
So you think grade levels make a big difference? #vachat
    In reply to @mcarlson110
  • mcarlson110 Apr 3 @ 8:12 PM EDT
Generally, Ss that need the extra work can't do the HW and it the Ss that don't need it +busywork #vachat
  • mcarlson110 Apr 3 @ 8:13 PM EDT
There is not really much support for Hw even in MS and HS but I get the idea of preparing Ss for college #vachat
    In reply to @philgriffins
  • philgriffins Apr 3 @ 8:14 PM EDT
Ok... I'm not hearing that HW is defintely bad.. I'm hearing it is used incorrectly. Q2 in one moment #vachat
  • ErinWest_ITRT Apr 3 @ 8:14 PM EDT
A1 bad is relative. Generally, the Ss who need practice are the ones who don't complete work. Hmwk should be differentiated if given #vachat
  • philgriffins Apr 3 @ 8:15 PM EDT
    Some results: rades 7–9: ES = .31 (Percentile gain = 12) Grades 10–12: ES = .64 (Percentile gain = 24) that is substantial.... #vachat
    In reply to @mcarlson110
  • mcarlson110 Apr 3 @ 8:15 PM EDT
Also, if Ts are giving HW, they need to spend time going over it - otherwise what do Ss learn? #vachat
  • dawnkingCCPS Apr 3 @ 8:16 PM EDT
Do some schools/district mandate HW be given? #vachat
  • philgriffins Apr 3 @ 8:17 PM EDT
Q2: I always hear about the 10 minute rule. #vachat 1st-10min, high school 2 hoursish. Is this fair or feasible for kids?
  • philgriffins Apr 3 @ 8:17 PM EDT
Oh yes, (not here) and if you don't give it often times parents are very upset. #vachat
    In reply to @dawnkingCCPS
  • mcarlson110 Apr 3 @ 8:18 PM EDT
A2: I find that even elem. kids are so busy with after school activities that finding time for Ss to do HW is challenging #vachat
  • ErinWest_ITRT Apr 3 @ 8:18 PM EDT
I worked in a school (in VA) that mandated homework- and it had to be the same across the grade level... I absolutely hated that. #vachat
    In reply to @dawnkingCCPS
  • dawnkingCCPS Apr 3 @ 8:18 PM EDT
We are expected to give HW. It is not mandated what type. Time limits are suggested as well. #vachat
    In reply to @philgriffins
  • L_Roadcap Apr 3 @ 8:18 PM EDT
#vachat A2: Truly, Ts should know their Ss & know what is feasible/ fair to them. Guidelines help, but not all Ss can or will always do HW
  • EspoLearns Apr 3 @ 8:19 PM EDT
Ugh. That's really too bad. That can't have been good for anyone. #vachat
    In reply to @ErinWest_ITRT, @dawnkingCCPS
  • mcarlson110 Apr 3 @ 8:19 PM EDT
Most of my Ps are grateful not to have HW but they have access to apps that we have at school #vachat
  • dawnkingCCPS Apr 3 @ 8:19 PM EDT
So much for aligning it with student needs, huh? #vachat
    In reply to @ErinWest_ITRT
  • L_Roadcap Apr 3 @ 8:19 PM EDT
#vachat A2: Often I give at least 2 days to complete HW before it's counted late. Allows Ss who need that extra time.
  • ErinWest_ITRT Apr 3 @ 8:20 PM EDT
A2 I guess...If spread across a week (to include weekends) kids are busy with scouts, etc and there are days we only manage to read. #vachat
  • philgriffins Apr 3 @ 8:20 PM EDT
How about my HS folks with sports and work.. is two hours on target and good prep for college or overkill? #vachat
  • mcarlson110 Apr 3 @ 8:20 PM EDT
I tell my Ps at back to school night that their Ss are working hard all day. They need to play after school #vachat
  • mrwilliamsworld Apr 3 @ 8:21 PM EDT
#vachat A2: The 10 min rule is pure garbage. Many hsers have extracurriculars, jobs, & home chores. I try to make time in class for all work
    In reply to @philgriffins
  • mcarlson110 Apr 3 @ 8:21 PM EDT
I do encourage reading (but NO logs) as the research backs up the more reading the better and higher achievement #vachat
  • EspoLearns Apr 3 @ 8:21 PM EDT
A2: W/a niece playing HS sports, i know she sometimes struggles to get all of her HW done. #vachat
  • mcarlson110 Apr 3 @ 8:22 PM EDT
My 2 daughters are adults but in HS, Ts were not talking to each other and they ended up with more than 2 hours of HW #vachat
  • ErinWest_ITRT Apr 3 @ 8:22 PM EDT
Yes!! Adults generally don't spend all day at work then continue that work all evening. Kids need balance and downtime too. #vachat
    In reply to @mcarlson110
  • dawnkingCCPS Apr 3 @ 8:22 PM EDT
Agreed. I wish all we had to give was reading. We do incentive logs a couple of times a year (Christmas and spring break) #vachat
    In reply to @mcarlson110
  • philgriffins Apr 3 @ 8:23 PM EDT
Q3: Time is a key element.. To help improve use of student time, shouldn't we lengthen the school day and reduce HW? #vachat
  • mrwilliamsworld Apr 3 @ 8:23 PM EDT
    #vachat A2b: This way, I'm there for q's & I know they didn't just copy & paste someone else's work
    In reply to @philgriffins
  • philgriffins Apr 3 @ 8:23 PM EDT
    OUCH! #vachat
    In reply to @mcarlson110
  • mcarlson110 Apr 3 @ 8:24 PM EDT
A3: Please, no our day is long enough. We start at 7:50 - 2:35 for elem. #vachat
  • ErinWest_ITRT Apr 3 @ 8:24 PM EDT
A2 NO. We need to make effective use of the time we have with students. #vachat
  • L_Roadcap Apr 3 @ 8:24 PM EDT
#vachat A3: If we lengthen school days, we inevitably loose time for extracurricular activities and family time.
  • EspoLearns Apr 3 @ 8:25 PM EDT
A3: In theory, sure. How long before that is taken up by a million small cuts and we're still giving HW, only w/less time to do it. #vachat
    In reply to @philgriffins
  • dawnkingCCPS Apr 3 @ 8:25 PM EDT
A3: Not longer, please! We are a late Elementary school. Students arrive at 9. Buses leave at 4pm. #vachat
  • philgriffins Apr 3 @ 8:25 PM EDT
I had fun writing that Q! However, it is fair... many other successful countries spend a great deal more time in school than our Ss #vachat
    In reply to @mcarlson110
  • EspoLearns Apr 3 @ 8:26 PM EDT
I suspect those same schools also have far more recess than we do at the elementary level. #vachat
    In reply to @philgriffins, @mcarlson110
  • philgriffins Apr 3 @ 8:26 PM EDT
But, shouldn't school be about education? Why should we be the ones to focus on EC activities, tradition? #vachat
    In reply to @L_Roadcap
  • mcarlson110 Apr 3 @ 8:26 PM EDT
At some point it is just not developmentally appropriate even if other countries are doing it. :) #vachat
    In reply to @philgriffins
  • mrwilliamsworld Apr 3 @ 8:27 PM EDT
#vachat A3: We don't need to lengthen the day. We need to look at what is really needed & cut what isn't. Not easy, but it works
    In reply to @philgriffins
  • EspoLearns Apr 3 @ 8:27 PM EDT
Because school should be about the whole child - not just academics. So many soft skills are learned in EC activities. #vachat
    In reply to @philgriffins, @L_Roadcap
  • mcarlson110 Apr 3 @ 8:27 PM EDT
Depends on our long term goals for our kids. #vachat
    In reply to @philgriffins, @L_Roadcap
  • L_Roadcap Apr 3 @ 8:28 PM EDT
School is about providing Ss a well-rounded education. I've seen Ss thrive in EC activities - gives them a place to feel success #vachat
    In reply to @philgriffins
  • philgriffins Apr 3 @ 8:28 PM EDT
    Love, Love,Love this! #vachat
    In reply to @mcarlson110, @L_Roadcap
  • mcarlson110 Apr 3 @ 8:28 PM EDT
Maybe looking at all the requirements we have for Ss and have Ts have a say in what is important #vachat
  • randysquier Apr 3 @ 8:29 PM EDT
A1: HW is practicing something already learned in order to master-music, foul shots, reading, math. most HW still is "new" content. #vachat
  • philgriffins Apr 3 @ 8:30 PM EDT
Q4: There is data that HW in HS/MS do help support learning& growth Shouldn't we do HW in Elem. to teach responsibility? #vachat
  • data2dada Apr 3 @ 8:30 PM EDT
Q4: There is dada that HW in HS/MS do help support learning& growth Shouldn't we do HW in Elem. to teach responsibility? #vachat
  • mcarlson110 Apr 3 @ 8:30 PM EDT
Education has lost its way as far as being developmentally appropriate. When I see what K Ss are supposed to know :( #vachat
  • stephensonmused Apr 3 @ 8:30 PM EDT
Hi! David, music educator from SC here. I taught in the Tidewater region of VA, my first 2 years. #vachat
  • mrwilliamsworld Apr 3 @ 8:30 PM EDT
A3b: #vachat I got rid of hw & I get better quality work & better completion rates. I also get MORE done in class too! #WINWIN
  • EspoLearns Apr 3 @ 8:30 PM EDT
    A4: No. #vachat
  • mcarlson110 Apr 3 @ 8:30 PM EDT
With that theory, we should start in preschool so they are ready for elem school. When does the madness end?? #vachat
    In reply to @data2dada
  • randysquier Apr 3 @ 8:31 PM EDT
A2 college work is often weekly, not daily and not graded. #vachat
  • philgriffins Apr 3 @ 8:31 PM EDT
    Welcome to #vachat
    In reply to @stephensonmused
  • EspoLearns Apr 3 @ 8:31 PM EDT
A4: My heart breaks for the Ss who come in w/o HW done b/c there's no one to help. It absolutely adds to the feeling of failure. #vachat
  • L_Roadcap Apr 3 @ 8:32 PM EDT
#vachat A4: If HW is graded & we only give it to encourage responsibility, then Ts aren't assessing knowledge, but behavior.
  • EspoLearns Apr 3 @ 8:32 PM EDT
A4: If we can teach Ss that responsibility when it's appropriate - there are fewer neg. attitudes towards HW. #vachat
  • philgriffins Apr 3 @ 8:32 PM EDT
Wouldn't feedback/grading on HW help students? (I know they are not truly the same!) #vachat
    In reply to @randysquier
  • mcarlson110 Apr 3 @ 8:32 PM EDT
Yes, some families in poverty and ELLs may have a hard time. What about our Sped Ss? How challenging is it for them? #vachat
    In reply to @EspoLearns
  • EspoLearns Apr 3 @ 8:33 PM EDT
Only if it's timely. If you're giving HW every day and teaching and giving feedback on classwork - where do you get the time? #vachat
    In reply to @philgriffins, @randysquier
  • philgriffins Apr 3 @ 8:33 PM EDT
I've seen many a PreK classroom focused on worksheets and other ridiculous things. #vachat
    In reply to @mcarlson110, @data2dada
  • dawnkingCCPS Apr 3 @ 8:33 PM EDT
A4: I think there are other ways to encourage responsibility in the classroom and at home (jobs/chores). #vachat
  • mrwilliamsworld Apr 3 @ 8:33 PM EDT
#vachat A4: Responsibility? More like accountability. I'd rather have my Ss know they need to do what's reqd than anything else
    In reply to @philgriffins
  • mcarlson110 Apr 3 @ 8:33 PM EDT
We can only grade on completion of HW #vachat
  • randysquier Apr 3 @ 8:33 PM EDT
A3 lets use the time we have now better first before extending day for all Ss. Most don't need it. #vachat
  • mcarlson110 Apr 3 @ 8:33 PM EDT
Is there another way to do that? #vachat
    In reply to @mrwilliamsworld, @philgriffins
  • EspoLearns Apr 3 @ 8:34 PM EDT
AND...what's the point of giving feedback after S has "practiced" it wrong for an hour? #vachat #hardhabitstobreak
    In reply to @philgriffins, @randysquier
  • philgriffins Apr 3 @ 8:34 PM EDT
Come on #vachat ers. If I'm not an expert at my instrument in music aren't I going to practice to get better? #vachat 10,000 our rule!
  • mcarlson110 Apr 3 @ 8:35 PM EDT
So sad. #vachat. I would not want my own children/grandchild in that environment #vachat
    In reply to @philgriffins, @data2dada
  • stephensonmused Apr 3 @ 8:35 PM EDT
A1: HW can intrude on Ss home life, but it has many merits. It is a time for our music Ss to practice. Recording short assignments. #vachat
  • EspoLearns Apr 3 @ 8:35 PM EDT
Yes, but I assume you want to get better at your instrument so no one is hounding you to do it. Less chance for resentment. #vachat
    In reply to @philgriffins
  • mcarlson110 Apr 3 @ 8:35 PM EDT
    That's why I encourage reading!!! #vachat
    In reply to @philgriffins
  • randysquier Apr 3 @ 8:35 PM EDT
A4 if kids can't do the HW or do not see value in it, no responsibility is taught. Compliance is not an attribute we want to develop #vachat
  • EspoLearns Apr 3 @ 8:36 PM EDT
HW needs to be rethought. As it is now - mostly worksheets, etc. It's not good. There are better ways. It's not appropriate for all. #vachat
  • philgriffins Apr 3 @ 8:36 PM EDT
shouldn't they want to be better at "school"? #vachat
    In reply to @EspoLearns
  • mcarlson110 Apr 3 @ 8:37 PM EDT
I have to agree w @EspoLearns . If they are doing the HW wrong, what did they learn but bad habits and wrong answers #vachat
    In reply to @EspoLearns
  • EspoLearns Apr 3 @ 8:37 PM EDT
Absolutely. If we're talking about worksheet HW, I bet no one has taken the time to explain why they should want to be better. #vachat
    In reply to @philgriffins
  • philgriffins Apr 3 @ 8:37 PM EDT
Q5: What is wrong with homework as it is currently assigned? #vachat
  • EspoLearns Apr 3 @ 8:38 PM EDT
A5: It's standardized, it's often worksheet based, it's jumping through hopes rather than learning. #vachat
  • L_Roadcap Apr 3 @ 8:38 PM EDT
#vachat I love it when Ss get so into working on an activity that they ask if they can work on it at home!
  • mrwilliamsworld Apr 3 @ 8:39 PM EDT
I do it in my class. I show my Ss what needs to be done to help them. I actually focus on...shudder...teaching! #vachat
    In reply to @mcarlson110, @philgriffins
  • philgriffins Apr 3 @ 8:39 PM EDT
A5: worksheets and projects that many Ss can't do without support, 30 questions when 5 will do, punishment for not getting it signed #vachat
  • EspoLearns Apr 3 @ 8:39 PM EDT
A5: It's standardized, it's often worksheet based, it's jumping through hoops rather than learning. #vachat
  • ErinWest_ITRT Apr 3 @ 8:39 PM EDT
Practice makes permanent. If they practice wrong...Hard to "unlearn" #vachat
  • EspoLearns Apr 3 @ 8:40 PM EDT
A5: Best thing I did: Ditched the reading log. It was a hoop. S who weren't reading lied, Ss who were reading didn't need it. #vachat
  • ErinWest_ITRT Apr 3 @ 8:40 PM EDT
A5 one size fits all mindset. #vachat
  • philgriffins Apr 3 @ 8:41 PM EDT
Q6: If we know what is wrong with it, how can we improve it? What should HW look like? #vachat
  • mrwilliamsworld Apr 3 @ 8:41 PM EDT
A5: Too much hw focuses on rote. Time for review/correction is sacrificed. Becomes counterproductive #vachat
    In reply to @philgriffins
  • MrDeSando Apr 3 @ 8:41 PM EDT
A5 Most HW is given simply because Ts feel they have to; one of the biggest remnants of the "wait we've always done it" mentality #vachat
  • stephensonmused Apr 3 @ 8:42 PM EDT
A5: Too often, it is given just to be given. Why? Because we're supposed to! #vachat
  • philgriffins Apr 3 @ 8:42 PM EDT
We are big about compliance in schools, aren't we. #vachat
    In reply to @EspoLearns
  • mcarlson110 Apr 3 @ 8:43 PM EDT
A6: too easy - no hw. Honesly, I don't wan't to deal with it, not grade it or look at it when I don't know who did it _Ps or Ss #vachat
  • EspoLearns Apr 3 @ 8:44 PM EDT
Yes. I had a great principal who asked, "Is that working for you (or your student)? Often in relation to s/t stupid I was doing. #vachat
    In reply to @philgriffins
  • L_Roadcap Apr 3 @ 8:44 PM EDT
#vachat A6: HW should provide Ss ability to expand horizons & enrich learning experience. HW should be intentional & may not happen everyday
  • mcarlson110 Apr 3 @ 8:45 PM EDT
My current principal is against reading logs - I was so happy to ditch them :) #vachat He also supports Ts in their HW decisions
  • philgriffins Apr 3 @ 8:45 PM EDT
Ok, a few of you have touched on a reason for HW... tradition. Q7 in one moment. #vachat
  • EspoLearns Apr 3 @ 8:45 PM EDT
A6: Make it relevant. Tie it to real stuff that Ss care about. Percentages? Sports. Fractions? Baking. Reading? A million things. #vachat
  • mrwilliamsworld Apr 3 @ 8:45 PM EDT
A6: #vachat My class work is used for skills & help w/understanding. I teach hs soc sci and we do historiography not just trivia
    In reply to @philgriffins
  • EspoLearns Apr 3 @ 8:45 PM EDT
A6: Give Ss who need it the space to do it w/support they may not have at home. #vachat
  • philgriffins Apr 3 @ 8:48 PM EDT
Love the real world connections... I For example I used to make my math HW tied into a trip to the grocery store #vachat
    In reply to @EspoLearns
  • EspoLearns Apr 3 @ 8:48 PM EDT
That would be great! The problem there is that it has to be flexible for Ss to complete. That's not always comfy for a T. #vachat
    In reply to @philgriffins
  • L_Roadcap Apr 3 @ 8:49 PM EDT
#vachat A7: Ss shouldn't go home talking about HW, rather should be excited from learning at school. Ps should ask Ss to explain learning
  • mrwilliamsworld Apr 3 @ 8:49 PM EDT
A7: #vachat Pnight I let them know how valuable fam time is & how I respect it. So I minimize hw & use school time for schoolwork
    In reply to @philgriffins
  • stephensonmused Apr 3 @ 8:49 PM EDT
A6: Remove the "work" feel from HW. Make it so relevant & pertinent that it doesn't feel like work. #vachat
  • EspoLearns Apr 3 @ 8:50 PM EDT
Yes! Getting kids to practice b/c they want to - right back to @philgriffins and his instrument (or sport). #vachat
    In reply to @stephensonmused, @philgriffins
  • L_Roadcap Apr 3 @ 8:50 PM EDT
#vachat A7: Once, we did an activity that made Ss tell Ps. I received so many positive emails & none were about HW.
  • stephensonmused Apr 3 @ 8:51 PM EDT
A7: I like the quote, "Work smarter, not harder." Displaying efficiency in the teaching/learning process is key to this shift. #vachat
  • mcarlson110 Apr 3 @ 8:52 PM EDT
I use @seesaw so Ps can see student work all the time. #vachat
    In reply to @Seesaw
  • philgriffins Apr 3 @ 8:52 PM EDT
Q8: Does your HW follow your philosophy? (be honest) I know mine didn't for the first few years of teaching #vachat
  • mcarlson110 Apr 3 @ 8:53 PM EDT
We are learning about fractions and Ss had to ask fam about how they use fractions. We discussed the next day - no paper #vachat
  • mrwilliamsworld Apr 3 @ 8:53 PM EDT
YES!!! #vachat This builds great positive press. Can't buy this type of goodwill
    In reply to @L_Roadcap
  • EspoLearns Apr 3 @ 8:53 PM EDT
A8: Last year I taught a math class for 4th graders and gave almost no HW. Caused some consternation. #vachat
  • EspoLearns Apr 3 @ 8:53 PM EDT
A8: When I first started teaching. Eeek. Let's just say I apologize to those Ss when I run into them. #vachat
  • mcarlson110 Apr 3 @ 8:54 PM EDT
Yes!! I stopped giving HW and truly believe that is best for my Ss. I encourage reading #vachat

Q9 (Time is short!) Parents often want HW to be involved in their child's education. How do we keep them involved if we remove HW ? #vachat
  • mcarlson110 Apr 3 @ 8:55 PM EDT
A9: Apps like @seesaw allow Ps a window into their child's world. #vachat

#vachat A7: Some Ps think b/c they were successful at school, it should be done same for their Ss. We need to show that may not be the case

A8: #vachat Yes and no. Yes in that it is minimal & respects fam time. No in that we have the "lovely" SOLs

A9: I have a blog. I post what we're doing daily and, if I think they can enrich it, I give them some ideas. #vachat

#vachat A9: I often ask Ps to do more than ask "How was your day?" But to have Ss explain what they learned that day.

A8: Yes. I have shown Ss the value of wanting to improve & succeed. This concept + creating doable singing HW recordings = winning! #vachat

A9: #vachat I ask my Ps to be involved by being involved in extracurriculars & PTSA. It's a way to cut the apron strings gently

A9 narrative/snapshots through class dojo / twitter. Ps are aware of what's going on and then can support and discuss with kids #vachat
