Q1 Why does it matter that students feel a sense of belonging?
Hi All, I'm Chelsea from Michigan, a 6th grade teacher. So excited hear what you all think about the importance of belonging
RT
Q1 Why does it matter that students feel a sense of belonging?
RT Q1 Why does it matter that students feel a sense of belonging?
A1: Before learning can start, Ss have to know you care, that goes along with a sense of belonging
Hi Chelsea, glad you are here!
Learners always remember how you made them feel - sense of belonging to something greater than themselves https://t.co/Q9jm3XkZzc
A1 Humans are wired to belong. We want to feel safe. A sense of belonging helps us feel safety.
So true, Steven. Care is such an important element in
A1 Ss need sense of belonging so they feel safe to invest + take risks. Also, what it means to belong is an important life lesson.
A1: Ss have to feel that sense of community or the only thing students are working for is themselves, and that's unfulfilling.
If you are new to , remember to use the hashtag in every tweet. It is like a stamp that delivers your tweet to the conversation.
A1 Sense of belonging puts them at ease to succeed and fail..ultimately, to learn
A1 A sense of belonging is perhaps the greatest human need. To feel included, heard, valued, & contributing creates deep connection
A1: if Ss don't feel like they belong, they don't show up mentally or physically to do their best, feel their efforts don't matter
Hi all, glad to be joining in tonight. Nick from Iowa. Elementary Principal of where !

A1 Ss need sense of belonging so they feel safe to invest + take risks. Also, what it means to belong is an important life lesson.
A1: helps students feel they are a part of a learning community and around people who care about them and want to see them succeed
A1 A sense of belonging gives meaning to life and can give us a sense of identity. For example, I am a .
A1: belonging empowers students to take risks, be themselves, and to have FUN--all essential to great learning.
A1) Just as belonging to a family (of sorts) fosters trust and growth, so does belonging in their school. https://t.co/TzW1wFnoCq
Q1 Why does it matter that students feel a sense of belonging?
A1 they must feel safe and therefore it increases their capacity to learn
Is there a difference between safety and belonging?
A1. If learners don't feel that sense of belonging they will disrupt and find other means to draw attention to themselves.
Or ever worse, complete withdraw...
A1) It's hard to focus on learning if you don't feel like you should be there.
love this - investment and risk taking
A1: Because it's important that they know you care.
Dave in Ankeny, IA joining at the first media timeout
I hope even the "weird" kid (as you gif says) feel as if they belong!
yes. They need to feel like someone cares about what they experience at school.
I believe they go hand in hand. if you feel that you belong then it's safe to take risks https://t.co/9jflkWAA0H
Is there a difference between safety and belonging?
Because quality of learning is directly proportional to d quality of relationships in your classroom https://t.co/t1vEoJMwLg
Q1 Why does it matter that students feel a sense of belonging?
A1: A key human need is that of feeling worth. To be included is to be valued. Kids need to know that they are special & loved.
Welcome to https://t.co/TFxREFMI0Q
Hi all, glad to be joining in tonight. Nick from Iowa. Elementary Principal of where !
Q2 What are the "consequences" when a student doesn't feel like he/she belongs?
Welcome to https://t.co/XSeAsgsWr1
Hi All, I'm Chelsea from Michigan, a 6th grade teacher. So excited hear what you all think about the importance of belonging
It stands to reason that it's a lot harder to learn when your human needs aren't met. https://t.co/RXfBT0cGH8
A1 A sense of belonging is perhaps the greatest human need. To feel included, heard, valued, & contributing creates deep connection
Welcome to https://t.co/VVtKaZUtaO
Parent, ParentCamp facilitator, education communications professional from CT checking in to . Important topic.
depends on the location :) - not implying I don't belong here
A2 They retreat, do not take risks, do not innovate & do not grow https://t.co/VbbQMzHJpH
Q2 What are the "consequences" when a student doesn't feel like he/she belongs?
A2:Ss withdraw mentally from the class and don't see the value in learning if they don't feel cared for
though not entirely. Growth is ultimately about intrinsic motivation.
When kids feel safe, they develop a sense of belonging! (I think that's true for everyone, even adults!) https://t.co/CmfcHdmWXX
Is there a difference between safety and belonging?
A2: at best, "simply" retreat...at worse, depression and worse can take over. It becomes too scary. Learning = secondary to health
Exactly, Jeremy! I synthesize children's needs as leadership, love, laughter, & learning. All equal, all the time.
A2: If there's no sense of belonging, learning will be much more difficult. The have to feel like they can trust and be cared for.
RT Q2 What are the "consequences" when a student doesn't feel like he/she belongs?
A2 Consequences when students don't feel like they belong= Higher levels of stress and anxiety which impacts learning
A2 they are uncomfortable but not understanding it become disruptive, it's like being in a wool turtle neck sweater on a hot day
A2 They disengage, withdrawal, and / or remain silent.
A2: we tend to see behavior issues increase and attendance decrease
And when this is accomplished for Ss, Ts, everyone in a school community, a COL is at its strongest
https://t.co/2vv1zw4YGH
A1: A key human need is that of feeling worth. To be included is to be valued. Kids need to know that they are special & loved.
A1) A sense of belonging creates a sense of ownership and collaboration. Thus an acceptance of responsibility.
A2: Look other places to find belonging, probably with others who feel they don't belong, can't succeed.
A2: We should never send kids away feeling as if they do not belong - we may not know what they are going through
Yes, they don't want to be noticed when they need to be noticed the most.
A2: Why would I go somewhere where I don’t belong? A Ss who doesn’t feel s/he matters to others isn’t in the best place to succeed.
SUCH a great point...for better or worse, right? Well said, though.
A2. Model sense of belonging w/ other educators. Walk the walk - learners are watching you. https://t.co/tFjsT244pL
Great answer https://t.co/MGmEahCIU3
A1) A sense of belonging creates a sense of ownership and collaboration. Thus an acceptance of responsibility.
Sometimes school is the only place where S feels they belong, must make every effort to make each S feel safe & part of community
Great point--it's not like we stop looking for belonging--just look in other places, for better or worse.
Anxiety interferes with learning, they want to get out of the situation
Admin must be mindful of this for staff too. Ppl want to feel like they belong. Let them know they matter. https://t.co/9OCoL9zglQ
A2: Why would I go somewhere where I don’t belong? A Ss who doesn’t feel s/he matters to others isn’t in the best place to succeed.
A2 When kids don't feel belonging & meaning, they either become rebellious, reluctant, or they retreat.
Creates that's modeled more than taught, & is what will change the world for the better https://t.co/at4vepRvGi

This is why sense of belonging is so important! https://t.co/3qp54xht8J
A1 A sense of belonging is perhaps the greatest human need. To feel included, heard, valued, & contributing creates deep connection
A2) "I don't belong.... why bother" I'll find something else or "that" group will find me.
YES! I get to T 1 class and admin for 23 Ts each day...EVERYONE wants to belong and NEEDS to. Great point, Michele
YES! Must be modeled from the top, all the way down, on each level for to take hold! https://t.co/aLON0e3zGB
This is a great point. But what is it that has teachers not afford that belonging to one another? https://t.co/RRqj2TJNf0
A2. Model sense of belonging w/ other educators. Walk the walk - learners are watching you. https://t.co/tFjsT244pL
A2: disconnect means likelihood that learning stalls is greater. Ss (& Ts) miss opportunity to learn from a disconnected classmate.
When challenged, brain learns! When in fear, brain fights or runs! https://t.co/M70v9FWrma
A2 When kids don't feel belonging & meaning, they either become rebellious, reluctant, or they retreat.

Q3 What core elements help a student feel as if he/she does belong?
Yes! This is why we can't make assumptions. We must engage every Ss with positive suppositions.
It is entirely possible to win back or win over rebellious, reluctant, or retreating Ss but it takes consistency & dedication.
Thanks! Ha! I sat in admin meetings all day and need to connect with the good people of
And engage every staff member with positive suppositions as well.

A4 Find common ground or interests...make the connection.
RT
Q4 What can we do as Ts to reach out to Ss who might not feel as if they belong in the school/class?
A4 Spend time w/ them, offer encouragement, help them find their strengths & spotlight those, build them up
A4 My 12 yo & 15 yo said, "Listen, get to know my interests, have a sense of humor"
A4: talk to kids...sometimes it can be, not always, but can be that simple--even the "shy kids".

be inclusive
A4: Accept them unconditionally and promote them to the "right" Ss - the ones who will step up and model the desired culture.
A4) Put yourself in their shoes. Simple hello, how ya doing, can change a future.
It's amazing how many books on T say to not use humor...I think humor is ESSENTIAL! https://t.co/QYPKNUGcqN

Exactly - it takes a village...
Building a relationship with day by day, find their interest and build on that, can be powerful
A4
Create a school infrastructure that promotes T to S connection & that fosters connections btw Ss. Bolster efforts for at-risk Ss
Our Ss are so much more than data pts. If points on graph were pictures of Ss rather than dots, how much urgency would be created?
Does your school/dist support this? I am not sure what mine would say.
A4: Talk to them. Take a walk and just talk to them as if you were talking to your Godchildren... https://t.co/piqNyCtPZt
RT

A4 If you can attend a students extracurricular activity (a game, concert, play) this does wonders for belonging/relationships
A4 If Ts consistently focus on developing every S's social, emotional, soulful, & academic learning, all kids progressively succeed
A4: Always call them by name and don't just smile when you see them, but make them smile before they leave.
A4: To help a S feel they belong, invite in by listening & observing, not judging. Don't let compliance issues get in way.
A4: I think we need to carve out time for this weekly. I get so focused on curriculum, academics that I need to "build this in."
A4: public praise goes a long way. A Ss won't soon forget being told they did a great job in front of peers = pride.
A4 More than anything in the world, they sometimes just want to feel heard... Give them that. https://t.co/piqNyCtPZt
